Alternatives to apple backup

Can anyone recommend a cheap back up application? I am using apple backup, but basically its completely screwy and its doing my head in!
Many thanks

I'm using Memeo LifeAgent. At $29.95 it's not the cheapest backup solution available, but it's ability to track changes and automatically back them up on the fly or when next you connect your backup volume is really useful, as least to the way I work. There is one issue, described in the Known Issues, that they're finalizing a fix for. Otherwise it's working great for me, and with the beta mentioned in that post, I've had no issues at all.

  • ITunes 10.5 and Apple Backup won't run correctly for update to iOS 5.

I'm trying to update my iPhone 3GS to OS 5.  When I update to iTunes 10.5, click update, and begin the backup that's required before updating to OS 5, iTunes and Apple Backup get stuck in an endless death loop.  The striped bar in the top window of iTunes just keeps spinning and it claims to be backing up the phone.  But this continues for several hours and the update to OS 5 never starts.  I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes 10.5 several times because updating to OS 5 requires iTunes 10.5.  I've got plenty of RAM and a 2.0GHz computer.

Ok, here is what worked for me. Copied from sodaboy581's post:
Posted this in another thread!  Sounds stupid, but this will actually work.
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right Click "Command Prompt" -> "Run as Administrator")
    3. Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and hit ENTER.
    4. Restart iTunes.
    Problem solved.
At least this fixed it for me on my own Windows 7 x64 installation.  I had AppleMobileDevice.exe, APSDaemon.exe, and iTunes.exe all at 25% CPU simply from opening up iTunes.
25% CPU for me is 100% CPU per core since I have 4 cores.
Got it from another thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3383549?start=0&tstart=0
    Thanks, sodaboy!!

One caveat is that the iPhone (mine is a 4S) doesn't "wake up" while this is happening and hitting the "Home" button does not display "slide to cancel" as it usually does during a backup. Oh well, it still worked!

  • Alternating blinking Apple icon and low battery indicator

My nano has been displaying an alternating blinking Apple icon and a low battery indicator. I have tried to reset it, but it doesn't change. I have connected it via USB to my computer for several hours, and I have connected it to an AC charger for a couple hours. Still no change.
    Any ideas?

    1. Reset iPad
    2. Try another wall socket
    3. Try another cable (make sure it's an original Apple cable)
    4. Try another charger (make sure it's an original Apple charger)
    5. Clean Lightning port with compress air

  • Restore macbook pro with apple "Backup 3.1.2" software.

Last month my 12 and 17 inch powerbook G4 were stolen. I did have backups on 2 external hard drives. One was a manual back up (drag/drop) and the other I used the apple "backup 3.1.2" software. I was trying to restore my new macbook pro from the apple backup software. I kept receiving errors. Is backup 3.1.2 compatible with 10.5.6 and/or how can I restore all my data to my new macbook pro? Thanks and appreciate the help.

I know it's not very helpful, but to answer your question regarding compatibility, I use Backup 3.1.2 to backup specific sensitive data to a secure web-space every night. I have had an occasion to need something from that backup and have had no problems with restores. 3.1.1 is the 10.5 cutoff, as I recall.
Couple of thoughts as I was putting this reply together. Where are you storing the resulting backup data, maybe there was a problem with the write between your computer and that location? I bring this up because you might have other data on that drive which may need to be looked at. This really does you no good now, but the backup program also creates logs in your console which you can review. If there were problems, you can look there to see what the issue(s) are.
Final thoughts, is your entire backup corrupted, or just portions of it? In other words, can you get SOME data out of the backup, or can you not even open the file? If you have a drag/drop backup I would at least start with that and see how much of your data you can get restored.
Hopefully some of that helps. Been in your shoes and it's not fun. Good luck!

  • How will Apple Backup 3 behave when destination drive is full?

I have one external drive I use with time machine and a second that I schedule some backups using Apple Backup 3.1.2(v374). My destination drive is almost full and I'm wondering what will happen once it fills up? Will the backups start erroring out? I'm just trying to figure out if there is any way to have it function as time machine does...deleting the oldest copies, etc. Thanks.

    Hi whmcqueary;
Never having used Backup I am not sure of the answer but my money would be on erroring out instead of deleting old backups.

  • HT4859 MobleMe, Apple Backup, a non-iOS device, and iCloud

If I undrstand correctly, when MobleMe dies in a few weeks, the Apple Backup program will only backup your computer's info to local hard drives as it does NOT use iCloud?

    Hi,
The Apple App is called Messages on both iOS and Mac OS X devices.
The iOS version on iPhone can send SMS to non iOS devices.
At present (although rumoured to be coming) the Mac version cannot SMS to iPhone or non iOS devices.
However IF you have an AIM Login (AND some Apple issued IDs are valid AIM logins) and the person is using  US phone on one of these carriers then the app will send SMS using the AIM service as  sort of "translator" from IM (Instant Messages) to SMS
Basically you add a +1 (Country Code) to the Number and Add that to your AIM Buddy like it was  Buddy.
Messenger tends to refer to MSN messenger or possibly Yahoo IM app that is called Yahoo Instant Messenger.

  • APPLE Backups fail.

I am using APPLE's Backup 3 (ver.3.1.2 - v374) software to backup my files and configs on my .Mac storage. However, one of my backup tasks has been failing lately writing the following information in its log file:
    Connected to .Mac
    Begin backup at 2009-03-16 22:56:56.633 +0200
    Scanning files...
The previous backup catalog could not be found or could not be read.

This also happened a few weeks ago - back then, I bypassed the situation by deleting and re-creating the configuration of the failing backup.
What is wrong with this? What can I do to resolve this permanently?

    Hello,
    Post in the MobileMe Forum
The Mobile Me gurus hang out there and hopefully offer assistance.
In the mean time, locate this file and see if deleting it helps. com.apple.Backup.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot your Mac. See if that helps.

  • Are there any alternatives for iphone backup extractor?

    Hi all,
I find that the 'iphone backup extractor' program is very useful, however it is quite annoying that they limit the extraction to 4 files at a time and that we have to pay in order to get our own data files propperly. :S
When I restore my old backup from iTunes, every new thing is gone, when I restore the backup I just made, the old backup stuff has gone. It just replaces each other.
Apple should have their own software like this where you can extract what ever you want from your old backups and transfer it on to your phone, such as contacts for example.
Anyway, I was wondering if there is any alternatives for this program, or any other way I can extract my backup files ?

If you're on a Mac, there is a "free" iPhone backup extractor, but none that I know of for Windows. You could always code your own program, that would be free.
Apple doesn't provide a mechanism to do this for the simple reason they don't want users screwing with the iPhone backup. Thus, none of these third-party programs are supported.

  • Alternatives to Apple Mail

Running Apple Mail is nothing but a headache since updating to Mavericks.
What are the suggestions for an alternative email client?  I've looked at Entourage and Thunderbird.  Frankly, I like the feel of Apple Mail better.
But I am having far to many problems with Apple Mail jumbling my various account's servers and settings.
Are there other email clients available that are reliable?
    Thanks

If you have POP accounts you don't want to use Outlook 2011 for Mac.
Recommended: If you don't have Time Machine, backup your Mail folder by making a duplicate or copy to another location before doing the following.
    Option 1) Re-index Mail.
Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/11/how-to-enable-users-library-folder/.)
    Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
When you open Mail it will re-index your files.
Removing accounts is not required, but for Gmail it's often the best option. Using Gmail with Mavericks Mail.
    http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/12/use-gmail-with-mavericks-mail/
Option 2) This will nuke your current settings.
The following steps are similar to testing in a new User.
    1)  Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.) Do steps a,b,c
    a) Scroll to Mail folder.
Rename Mail OLD. [When you open Mail it will create a new Mail folder. You can revert to this folder if needed by removing OLD from the name. You would need to rename the "new" Mail folder first.]
    b)  Go to Containers in the User's Library folder.
    Delete the com.apple.mail folder.
    c)  Go to Preferences in the User's Library folder.
If you find any com.apple.mail.plist files, delete these.
    2) Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar. Log in.
    3) System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Delete all accounts.
    4) Open Mail.
    5) Enter one account at a time. Test to be sure you are connected before adding other accounts.
If you have Gmail, be sure you have the All Mail folder selected to sync. Workarounds we previously used no longer work in Mavericks. You might need to go into your Gmail Settings in your browser to make the necessary changes. See this article for help:
    Use Gmail with Mavericks Mail
    http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/12/use-gmail-with-mavericks-mail/
If you have POP account you can import the "On My Mac" folders from the Mail OLD folder. If you have "leave on server" selected for your POP accounts, Mail will download all the old messages from the server. Compare the imported mailboxes to the Inbox and delete the duplicates. If you have moved messages to subfolders, I suggest you log into your account with your browser and move the old messages to a folder you create online. POP only downloads messages in the Inbox.

  • How do I use Apple Backup with my new MacBook Pro?

I've been using Apple's Backup app from the old days of Mobile Me (remember when we had to pay to use Apple's cloud?). I've just bought a MacBook Pro and I transferred everything from my old iMac (early 2008 running Mavericks). Everything works fine, but my copy of Backup has reverted to demo mode, restricting me to just 100 MB per backup. It tells me that in 60 days, I will lose even that.
How do I transfer over my permissions to use this app?
    Thanks!

If you have everything on your new machine, set up an iCloud account. System preferences/iCloud.

You may want to buy an external drive (they are cheap these days) and set up Time Machine on it.

  • Hard Drive was replaced, but now can't get Apple Backup to restore data

My iMac had a damaged hard drive, so I replaced it and reinstalled Mac OS 10.4, along with iLife 06. My iMac is now up and running again (prior to hard drive replacement it froze and was then unable to get up and running again without repeated attempts at powering down and then up).
Here's my problem. Prior to the replacement, I'd been using Apple's Backup program to backup all my iPhoto and iTunes files to an external harddrive. The files are on the external harddrive, but when I use Backup to restore them, the opened and allegedly restored files have no data in them. (I've been using "restore to alternate location" and putting the restored data in a shared folder on the iMac. Backup runs, and says the data is in this shared folder, but when I go to import data from them, they are empty.)
Fortunately, I did a wholesale copy of my old desktop to my external hard drive in July when it became clear I'd have to replace hard drive, so I was able to get most of my photo and music files restored from that. But from July to October, I used Backup exclusively to save new pictures or music and now I can't find a way to get that data restored (short of trying to pull off the old damaged harddrive).
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I have to admit that the lack of response is somewhat frustrating...

  • Alternative to Apple TV for composite video

Like 80% of Americans, I don't have a high-definition TV. My TV only supports composite video input (a yellow RCA plug) or analog coaxial input.
I had hoped to be able to use an Apple TV to watch video purchased from the iTS on my TV. It appears that this is not going to be supported, and that the necessary adapters would be far too expensive. So I'm looking for alternatives. Any suggestions?
A solution would need to support playback of FairPlay-protected media. I'd also prefer something relatively inexpensive -- $400 or less. And convenience is important -- I could just buy an iPod and move it between my desktop and my TV, but that's more manual work that I'd prefer, and doesn't have an on-screen interface (as far as I know).
I appreciate any suggestions. My impression from comments I've seen elsewhere is that I'm not the only one in this situation.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Let's not forget that if you use a good ole mini-to-vga adapter (Apple brand or other), you could connect an iPod, by way of the head phone jack, to composite RCA plugs on the TV. The Apple cord is 6-ft long, but longer cords (or extensions) should be available. The cost would be $20. I can tell you that shows from iTunes can look and sound great when played from an iPod to a TV when using such a cord. My TV is a 32" LCD (an inexpensive Protron model). The resolution for composite connection is standard 480 interlaced but it looks surprisingly good. I'd say nearly as good as a decent DVD player. With a video iPod, you would have portability, and the possibility of future devices (e.g., docks) that will come closer to providing functions that you really want.

  • Budget alternative to Apple Wireless Keyboard?

Because of my current apartment set up, my computer is rarely in a position where a corded keyboard will suffice anymore. The cords are just too troublesome and even with a USB extension cable, it's not long/free enough for me. So I've turned my head towards wirless keyboards, and I have a few questions.
    1. What is a good budget alternative to the Apple Wireless Keyboard (AWK from now on)that will run in OS X? By budget, I mean cheaper than the AWK, and preferably with a bluetooth adapter included (though this is a negotiable term). Those designed for Windows that still work with Mac are acceptable, as I believe that this software (http://gnufoo.org/ucontrol/ucontrol.html) should alleviate the alt/windows key problem.
    2. Do I need the D-Link Bluetooth adapter to use the AWK, or are cheap alternative such as the following possible candidates?
    3. While browsing, I came across a Keyboard/Trackball combination which claims to work with Macintosh. I tried to locate a review that could confirm or deny it, but was unable to. The product is this:
    http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=4066
Does anyone have any experience with a wireless keyboard+trackball, and would they recommend it?
I just want to know all of my options before I purchase a new keyboard.

  • Alternative to Apple TV?

    Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone knows if any of the movie download services will work with MacOS. I would buy Apple TV but I don't have a widescreen TV so I'm looking for an alternative that I can use until I get one.

You can play video files into an ordinary TV with an iPod if you have the composite A/V cable that plugs into the iPod headphone jack.
