Alternatives to Apple Mail

Running Apple Mail is nothing but a headache since updating to Mavericks.
What are the suggestions for an alternative email client?  I've looked at Entourage and Thunderbird.  Frankly, I like the feel of Apple Mail better.
But I am having far to many problems with Apple Mail jumbling my various account's servers and settings.
Are there other email clients available that are reliable?
Thanks

If you have POP accounts you don't want to use Outlook 2011 for Mac.
Recommended: If you don't have Time Machine, backup your Mail folder by making a duplicate or copy to another location before doing the following.
Option 1) Re-index Mail.
Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/11/how-to-enable-users-library-folder/.)
Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
When you open Mail it will re-index your files.
Removing accounts is not required, but for Gmail it's often the best option. Using Gmail with Mavericks Mail.
http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/12/use-gmail-with-mavericks-mail/
Option 2) This will nuke your current settings.
The following steps are similar to testing in a new User.
1)  Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.) Do steps a,b,c
a) Scroll to Mail folder.
Rename Mail OLD. [When you open Mail it will create a new Mail folder. You can revert to this folder if needed by removing OLD from the name. You would need to rename the "new" Mail folder first.]
b)  Go to Containers in the User's Library folder.
Delete the com.apple.mail folder.
c)  Go to Preferences in the User's Library folder.
If you find any com.apple.mail.plist files, delete these.
2) Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar. Log in.
3) System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Delete all accounts.
4) Open Mail.
5) Enter one account at a time. Test to be sure you are connected before adding other accounts.
If you have Gmail, be sure you have the All Mail folder selected to sync. Workarounds we previously used no longer work in Mavericks. You might need to go into your Gmail Settings in your browser to make the necessary changes. See this article for help:
Use Gmail with Mavericks Mail
http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/12/use-gmail-with-mavericks-mail/
If you have POP account you can import the "On My Mac" folders from the Mail OLD folder. If you have "leave on server" selected for your POP accounts, Mail will download all the old messages from the server. Compare the imported mailboxes to the Inbox and delete the duplicates. If you have moved messages to subfolders, I suggest you log into your account with your browser and move the old messages to a folder you create online. POP only downloads messages in the Inbox.

  • Apple Mail cannot encoding issues (Chinese Asian Language)

I've abandon Mail for almost 2 years, 2 issues I had before is the 'disappearing mail' and the encoding problem.
Now with my new MBP 17" I decided to use Mail again. I am getting the encoding problem again.
    Things I tried already:
    1. set the default encoding using Terminal to "BIG5"
    2. check under 'Composing' preference for 'Plain Text', uncheck 'use the same message format as the original message'
    3. Tried manually setting the encoding before sending. But in few instance Apple Mail tells me that there is an Error and cannot change the encoding. Even I succeeded in changing the encoding, there is no guarantee that the other side can read it properly.
This usually happens when I 'reply' or 'forward' a Chinese email to someone. So far it happens to the HTML type email.
Still I am getting problem sending mail that Outlook can properly decode by itself. To fix this from the Oulook side, they need to open the message by double click, select encoding for the message, and pick either UTF-8 or BIG5 (if the message is BIG5, select UTF-8 and vise versa) then the message will display properly.
I know this could be an Outlook problem (probably is) but I cannot tell my customer to change encoding each time. I really need a way to do this from the Apple Mail side.
The following is just one example of HTML email I replied and turns out to be BIG-5 under Outlook, but user need to select UTF-8 to view it.

Hi xxxx...... (body of the message)
I need help here, I still like the operation in Apple Mail but this is killing me. Please help.

Thanks but I tried these already. Didn't seem to work.
I switched to Thunderbird. Took a while to convert my mailboxes (30+ of them) from emlx to mbox and loaded into Thunderbird.
Thunderbird is ok, address book really ***** since it doesn't work with the OSX Address book at all. I had to use vcf2ldif to convert address book but the Chinese character in the Address Book all became ??? in Thunderbird. And the time it takes to convert 400+ address is long (I already filtered the address book from my 1000+ contact)
Font setting in Thunderbird is not good as well. Emails in my folders are in different fonts all the time due to the difference in encoding. I just need to get used to it.
If Apple Mail can just handle encoding better, I will never switch. Both my customer and my family are having same problem, (because we all read/send Chinese Traditional email) Apple should do something. Already send email regarding this to Apple, and if there are other people with the same problem as me, pleas let Apple know about this.

  • Challenges with Apple Mail auto-complete

    Hi all,
I'm seeking advice regarding some challenges with Apple Mail auto-complete email addresses for a friend's AOL mail IMAP account. Main issue: in Apple Mail, recently contacted email addresses are not appearing via auto-complete. As such, I'm doing some research for him and have some questions:
    - Any resources on how email contacts are managed in Apple Mail?
    - Any resources on how email contacts are managed in Apple Contacts? What's the difference? I'm not 100% clear how they are linked.
    - Seeking alternative to Apple Mail for someone who is legally blind. Are there some alternatives with a simpler interface and possibly better integration with VoiceOver? Just curious
    Any help is appreciated.

    1)  Reindex Mail
Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)
    http://www.needhelp4mac.com/2013/11/how-to-enable-users-library-folder/
    Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
When you open Mail it will re-index your files.
    2)  Search is based off Spotlight cache files.
HOW TO RE-INDEX YOUR SPOTLIGHT CACHE FILES
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    *  Click Spotlight.
    *  Click the Privacy tab.
    *  Drag your drive to the list. Wait a couple of minutes.
    *  Remove the item you added.
    *  Spotlight will re-index the contents of the item you initially dragged to the list.
    Contacts in Mail
Under Window in the Menu bar, select Previous Recipients List. If the person is in your Contacts, there will be an icon next to the email address. You can add entries to contacts or remove from the list. For example your friend got a new email address but autofil wants to use an old email address. Remove the old entry.
While Mail and Contacts are two separate applications they are tightly integrated.
I'm sorry but I have no other suggestions for a better email client.
Download and run the Mountain Lion combo to refresh your system files.

  • Apple Mail and Google Apps (personal domain) - 554 554 Denied Mail Delivery Subsystem (Intermittent Failure)

    Hello,
I am having problems with my Apple Mail and Google Apps and I don't know what to do.  I have been using apple mail with google apps for a few months now with no complications.  In the last week I have recieved a handful of messages from the Mail Delivery Subsystem citing error "554 554 Denied". I know that the emails I have tried to send to are real emails and are entered correctly. I tried to send directly from google apps to one of these people today and it worked so I assume the problem is with Apple Mail, or is intermittent. Adding to my frustration is that it works with some people and not with others so it's hard for me to see exactly what is causing the problem.
    Any ideas?
I'll include a copy of one of the Mail Delivery Subsystem emails I recieved - excluding the email address and message body.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Transfer Apple Mail from 10.7.5 to 10.9.5 - alternative method???

    Hello,
I have a new Retina MBP running 10.9.5 that is replacing an aging Unibody MBP that is running 10.7.5.
I know about transferring Mail by moving the Mail folder in my Library folder and matching preferences . . .
    BUT . . .
I did a little exploring and discovered that if I just add the three imap accounts I currently use in Apple Mail on the old laptop to Apple Mail the new laptop, it appears that all the sub-folders I have created in Mail on the old laptop are created and populated on the new laptop.  A look at the resulting Mail folder on the new laptop seems to look pretty much the same as the Mail folder on the old laptop as well.  (some of the .mbox file sizes are slightly different however???)
Not having intimate knowledge of exactly how .mbox files work, I am wondering if this is as good a way to transfer Mail to 10.9.5 from 10.7.5
(as long as all my accounts are imap rather than pop)
    OR
Is it safer to move the Mail folder??????
    Thanks
    John

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks . . .
Do most people setup their mail accounts to store received and sent mail on the servers???  Is there any disadvantage to doing so??
I guess in the end, transferring the Mail folder is probably a safer bet in the event that something is not stored on the servers that I am not aware of . . .

  • Attachment downloading--is there a way to track percentage of big downloads in Apple Mail 5.2? (OSX Lion)

I have a satellite internet connection and have trouble with big downloads and connectivity in Apple Mail.  I've discovered the Window/Activity button to track the progress of those downloads, but all it gives me is a rolling barbershop bar that never goes anywhere.  Right now I'm trying to download fifteen attachments that came with a message, and some of the files (primarily pdfs) show up in their designated folders--others have not.  Is there a way to track percentage on these downloads?
Also, each of the files seems to have three progress bars rather than just one.
    All files are primarily 3-4MB.
    Thanks,
    Melissa

The inconsistent message text view and when the text for an received message is very small is caused by the sender using HTML for message composition.
Copied from Why HTML in E-Mail is a Bad Idea.
Because it introduces accessibility problems. When you write in plain text, the receiving mail client renders the text in whatever font the reader chooses. When you format email with HTML, the sender controls the formatting. But this is a trap: You only think your message will render the same way to the viewer as it appears to the sender. In reality, the receiver can end up squinting because the font looks so tiny, or vice versa. HTML is not rendered the same way from one viewing client to the next - all guarantee of accessiblity goes out the window. This is especially problematic for visually impaired persons.
The Mail.app does not include a preference setting to convert all text for received messages to RTF or Plain Text so what John provided does not apply when receiving a message that was composed in HTML.
You can do as woodie provided or with such as message open, at the menu bar go to View > Message and select Plain Text Alternative and what John provided will apply and it also applies when the sender uses RTF or Plain Text for message composition.

  • Sent messages disappeared in Apple Mail

    Hello everybody,
I use Apple Mail (v. 3.6) with Mac OS X (Version 10.5.8) for my Google Domains email addresses.
Yesterday, all the sent messages suddenly disappeared from my Inbox in Apple Mail on the Mac (only for one account, although I run 6 accounts on Apple Mail). I therefore signed in with my username on Google Domains and discovered that the messages were still there in the "Sent" folder.
I tried to Rebuild my mailbox in Apple Mail but it didn't work.
After that, I removed and reinstalled the account in question in Apple Mail, but it got even worse and now every time I try to open Mail, it completely crashes. I get the coloured circle and nothing happens (except that the email account that I reinstalled blinks in alternatively on the Mac files side and GoogleMail side...). Eventually I have to force quite
Does anybody have an idea of what the problem could be and how I could solve it?
Many thanks in advance. Your help will be really helpful.
    Clément.

Salut Clément, et un accueil chaleureux aux forums!
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't help & you can afford to redo any Mail Rules...
    Trash these files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/... MessageRules.plist and MessageRules.plist.backup

  • Apple Mail not downloading mail

Even after the latest so called fix for Mavericks my Apple Mail still does not automatically download my email from Gmail.  I have to go through old ones and delete something to prompt the download of the new ones to begin.  Its very frustrating having all my new email on my phone but if its something I wont to view on the computer I can't as its not there waiting for me. Mail that was sent 3 hours ago has only just downloaded into Apple Mail although I have had it on my phone and iPad for all this time.  If the latest fix was meant to fix this problem why does it still exist?

Try rebuilding each of your inbox's and see of that allows the download to proceed. Select the mailbox and then from the menu select Mailbox > Rebuild. Alternatively check to see if there is a message on the server that has an unknown sender. Delete it if that is the case and try downloading again.
Try disabling either one of the accounts (temporarily) and see if it is just one of them is causing the problem. Do that via Mail Preferences. Select Account and in the Advanced tab uncheck "enable this account". The account will disappear from the viewer window but the underlying account definition and details are not deleted so to make it visible again simply check "enable this account".

  • Apple Mail Not Showing Inbox Unread Count on Dock after installing Mavericks

After installing Mavericks, my Apple Mail (connected to my work's Gmail account) stopped showing the Inbox's unread count on the dock. I switched it to "all mailboxes" to see if that would make a difference, and the dock shows 7 unread emails when there are actually none. When I switch it back to "Inbox" unread counts, it shows nothing. I've waited 15 minutes after receiving an email to see if it will show an unread message in the dock, but it does not. Does anyone have a fix for this?
    Thank you!

Quit your mail entirely, then in terminal do:
    mv ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope* ~/Desktop
This moves all your "Envelope Index*" files to your desktop.  An alternative is deleting the files, but this allows you to keep them as a temporary back-up (you can delete them at-will later).  Also, you can move the files from Finder instead of Terminal, if you prefer.
After the files have been moved, re-open Mail
This should re-load all your email messages, updating/restoring the count
While this works, it does not explain the reason the count goes missing, nor does it ensure that the count won't go missing again in the future, but at least it's a temporary workaround.

  • Empty messages in apple mail

One of the email lists that I subscribe to frequently contains messages with images. It's a moderately high volume list with 20-30 messages per day. Inevitably, a few of those messages with attached images (according to the paperclip icon in the messages list) will arrive with no headers and no raw data. The display of the message in Apple Mail shows only the sender's name/address and the subject, nothing else such as the usual warning, "This message contains no content."
The people who run the mailing list don't think that the problem is on their end so I am here asking whether this  is happening to anyone else and, if so, is there a way to correct it.

Thanks to Linc Davis and dot.com for the replies.
Here is some add'l info that may or may not shed light on this issue.
I tried to follow Lin's suggestion to see if the message was intact in web view. Unfortunately, I was unable to find it. This is an Office 365 account. Apparently, messages are deleted as they are sent to my MaxOS X 10.10.1 account.  I could only find two messages for today when Apple Maile shows more than a100 incoming. Thus, I was unable to cross  check in this way.
However, I was able to replace this issue o/s of the mailing list server and Office 365. What I did was log into my iCloud web account and use Pages to send an email with an ePub attachment. I sent his twice, once to my @me.com address and one to my Office 365 account.  The one sent to my iCloud account arrived intact. The one sent to my Office 365 account was empty – no attachment whatever. So this issue has to do with attachments as handled by Office 365.
Unlike the previous cases, I was able to see both the Headers and Raw versions of the email.
I see no clues in these data sets but include them here in case I have missed something. Here goes:

  • I have 4 accounts in Apple Mail, 1 at iCloud and 3 at Gmail. On just one of those addresses a given message is received numerous times. Example: my inbox shows the 1st 2 messages coming from my own email address and the title is identical, Mind over .....

I'd love to offer a screen capture and save a few 1000 words. You'll see that I have numerous duplicate copies of emails being received by one account, my RegisterMe4Now address. Let's see if the captures don't speak for themselves.
I would appreciate your help and guidance. Thank you.

  • Apple Mail 7.1 (1827) Slow to Send Mail Messages

Apple Mail 7.1 delays the sending of messages from iCloud or third-party ISP mail accounts by 20 to 30 seconds. While this behavior is not 100% consistent, it is reproducible 70% of the time.
Restarts or quit & relaunch Mail.app has no impact. Apple Mail has had all night to sync my two accounts (1 iCloud account and 1 third-party ISP account)
No error messages are thrown, all mail does send successfully, eventually.
This problem occurs on both my Apple MacBook Pro 2.7 i7 mid– 2012 and 2.6 Mid-2012. One had a fresh copy of Mavericks installed and the other had an update from Mountain Lion.
Synchronization has been performed, as well, the rebuild command has been executed.
The behavior also occured during an attempt to investigate the issue when a Mail account (in this case, a friends iCloud account) was installed into a newly created computer user account (standard or admin)
Clearly, not the most serious problem to have but one that merits discussion and eventual resolution.

I am having the same issue with Mail 7.1 (1827).  I have looked at all of the alternatives, but keep coming back to Mail.  Airmail Beta, however, was outstanding.  Write an email click send and it's gone like a rocket!  If they keep developing, they will give Mail a run for the money.
That said, I like the search abilities in Mail and the smart folders.  I keep coming back.  Plus I like CMD+Shift+D to send.  If I am out at a wifi spot and do an email, I really don't like having to sit there waiting for Mail to decide wether it wants to send or no.  Perhaps I'll look at using alternative smtp ports?  Maybe Mail doesn't like using port 26? Whatever the case, I wish they'd fix it.

  • How to Import Apple Mail Folders on Second User Account

I purchased a new MBP after the old one failed.  At the Apple Store I set up a User ID for the new MBP.  I then used the Migration utility later on to bring in all my data from my late MBP.  This included all my Mail folders.  Now I want to get a selection of those Mail Folders to the New User ID.  I have tried exporting a folder to a USB flash drive, told Apple Mail to import it in the new ID but without success.  Is there another way to get the selected mail folders over to the new ID?  Currently I have way too much mail on the old migrated ID.  I have been running DupeZap to try and reduce the duplicate messages but that's another story.  I just want to get the good folders (no duplicates) over to the new User ID.  I seem to recall that back with Tiger you could use a drop box or public folder to pull files/data from one user ID to another.  Is this still possible or is there another option I can try?
    Thanks for advice and guidance.

If both system are using the IMAP mail provider all you have to do is setup the connection to the mail server and all the emails and folders will be copied down to the windows computer. That is what IMAP is for. The mail stays on the server, and can be store
on the local computer also, and when you connect to the server with another device, computer, phone or pad, all the mail with folders gets copied to the other device.
But I think some of your mail was gotten using POP so it is not longer on the server.
Or you have emails in local folder only and they would be on the server. But you can create folder on the server in one mail program, or on the mail web interface and then copy those emails into those folder on the server byt copying them in one of the email
programs. Then when you log on with the other device all of them will be downloaded to the other device.
Other alternative:- You can find various solutions on having a google search
for your problem. Or you can have a look at the following link: Apple mail to Outlook Windows

  • Apple mail not displaying properly

My first time in this forum.  Hopefully, you can help.  I am having a problem in Apple Mail in Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3.
Some e-mails from the same sender appear fine with images and links properly displayed, yet other times I only see text with underlined links.  For example, I receive promotional e-mails from Land's End (a retailer in the U.S.) with images of the items.  Some e-mails display perfectly and others are as below in the cut and paste.  (I have noticed the problem frequently with Google news alerts.)
Any idea of what settings I should change?  I am very confused because some mails arrive fine, and others are like below.
P.S.  I am a new user of iMac, so please be patient if I do not understand well your instructions.

Thanks for your suggestion.  I do not think your proposed solution will work for me.
    1) In my desperation, I erased my hard drive and even reformatted it (with the help of Apple Care).  I then opened Apple Mail with a completely clear hard drive and system.  The problem still occurred.  For that reason, I do not think it is the INBOX.mbox file that caused the problem.
    2) My iMac that is less than a month old is now in the repair shop.  It apparently has a faulty logic board and USB port.  Hopefully, the Apple Mail will work after those parts are replaced.

  • Apple mail strips text when displaying an incoming email

I receive emails associated with a club I belong to from an email reflector. Club members send emails to the reflector and the reflector resends the email to each club member including me of course
This works fine so long as the email to (and from) the reflector contains either only text or only an attachment (as in a photograph). However if the distributed email contains both text and a photo Apple Mail is unwilling to display the text ... only the photograph appears. Which as you might well imagine is rather annoying.
So how do I know that the email is displayed with the accompanying text stripped away? Well if I look at the raw source (View --> Message --> Raw Source) I see the following:
    --001a11c249488ce20604f4d3bcb6
    Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary=001a11c249488ce20304f4d3bcb5

    3AAAABMCAwABAAAAAgAAAGmHBAABAAAA8AAAAAINAAAgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgICAg
I changed the text to protect the identify of the sender. In Apple Mail all I see is the picture (IMG_0918.JPG) and all the text that goes with it is missing.
From what I can tell from comments on the reflector, some other email clients exhibit the same problem (they also strip the text) while others do not. So maybe the email is not being formatting properly by the reflector. That could be. But files on the web have mal-formed HTML all the time, yet browsers deal with the mal-formed HTML without stripping the text away as seems to be the case here.
It seems to be that Apple Mail sould be able to display the text which in contained in the raw source.
Any solution (other that looking at these email in raw source to read thei missing textual contentt)? If an Apple employee is reading this maybe you could pass this along to whoever is prosponsible for keeping track of Apple Mail bugs.
    Thanks.

I design and code a lot of HTML emails, and plain text remains an important feature for many clients.
This seems to be a recent change to Mac Mail. Previously, there was an option under View --> Message to show the plain text alternative.
