Alternatives to Buying a Deck?

I have to give up the video deck I'm now using, and the cost to replace it is just too much for now. All I really need is to be able to view my work day to day on my color video monitor (from FCP as well as Photoshop). When I need to make tape, I can borrow the deck back. Question is, is there a converter I can get cheap (other than using a camera) that converts Firewire out to s-video in to monitor? I am new to this, so model numbers and good vendors would be very helpful! I've tried looking, but don't really understand this stuff yet. Thanks!

The Sony DVMC-DA2 is an outstanding DV Bridge that I use. Its built in video stabalizing technology is outstanding!!
I have use several other DV bridges including canopus, Hollywood, and matrox. All have very good capture and reproduction capability provided that you have clean stable video. If you are capturing from a device that automatically outputs various types of copy protection or old/multigenerational tapes, these tend to loose synch. The Sony is rock solid in all counts.
Unfortunately Sony no longer makes the DVMC-DA2. They can be acquired used on eBay and other sources. Expect to pay $200-$400 for a used one. Because of their capabilities they tend to fetch prices close to and exceeding new. Many Sony video cameras have a built in DV bridge that uses the same rock solitd technology. One of these may also prove to be a good option for you. Often you can find a camera with a worn out tape mechanism or destroyed lense that still works great as a DV Bridge fairly cheap.
Hope this helps.

  • Good alternative to buying TI-83/84 calculator

i really dont feel like buying another TI-83 for math now that im taking more math in college. is there a good program or download i should look into that would give me the same functions of a TI-83 for my MBP?

The MBP has a graph utility called "Grapher". As far as things like sin, tan, roots, and equations it's worth every penny to just buy one. I have taken a lot of advanced math and can tell you those little things are 100% required. Besides, you can use the program feature to store little cheat sheets in for tests.
Check with you local or campus library. Most will lend you one for the semester if you show your schedule showing a math class enrollment...mine did.
    Good luck!

  • Best ideas for a video deck

I am using a Canon ZR65MC DV camcorder, and I am looking to buy a deck for it. Do I need one?

Depends...do you want your camera to wear out? All that shutting back and forth and rewinding and fast forwarding isn't good for the poor thing.
Yes...get a deck. It is designed for this.
DSR-11 at the minimum. You have two 30" Apple displays...you can afford this.

  • Alternative to iCloud storage

I am a former user of MobileMe, and was granted the free 25GB of iCloud storage space that ends on Sept 30, 2013. At that time it looks like my free storage will drop to 5GB. I am currently using about 9GB of storage.
Are there any alternatives to buying the Apple's iCloud storage space and still having over 5GB of data stored off site?
I have a GoDaddy account in which I have oodles of GB of storage space. Can I somehow use that and migrate my "in the cloud" data to GoDaddy?

They do for or iOS devices, and of course PhotoStream isn't a backup service, but does hold your pics for a time. Plus contacts and other data, obviously. Apple say:

  • HDTV Preview - Intensity Pro Alternatives

I was looking at a Blackmagic Intensity Pro so I could preview Premiere on an external HDTV using HDMI cables. After reading several forums about compatibility issues with Dell, I contacted Blackmagic and they confirm their cards may have problems in a Dell computer.
My questions is, what are my alternatives? Buying a different computer is not an option. Buying a video card with HDMI output is not an option. I want a dedicated card with HDMI output to preview Premiere on an HDTV. Is there another card out there that is compatible with a Dell?

You can also try Matrox option :
MX02 Mini desktop is a PCIe card with a real breakout box, with a very good rendering engine with HDMI,components and composite output.
    http://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mxo2_mini/
It's around 400 $ without the MAX option. For Dell compatibility, you must go to Matrox forum (MXO2 mini pre-purchase section)

  • Capture Card/Deck Link

    Hi All,
Currently I am setting up my Post Production outfit. As of now, I am using and Old G5 with Dual 2.7 GHZ PowerPC processor, with 3GB memory(although when i have a budget I plan to buy the new Mac Pro). Anyway as I was saying before till now, I use firewire to capture my footages, thus i lose quality(true or false?), anyway I want to buy a deck link or any capture card, or whatever capture device to maintain the quality of my footages. Thus what would you guys recommend? and what tape deck would you guys recommend?
    Tnx again!!

I use firewire to capture my footages, thus i lose quality(true or false?)
FALSE. Firewire transfers are data transfers. Zero quality loss.
anyway I want to buy a deck link or any capture card, or whatever capture device to maintain the quality of my footages
Unneeded if you are capturing via firewire. But very necessary if you are outputting to any non-firewire formats, or if you want to color correct on an HD monitor (or uncompressed SD).
Thus what would you guys recommend?
    Two options for capturing:
www.aja.com Kona series. Kona 3 and Kona LH...different capabilities. You have to look at what they both offer and determine for yourself it if is something you need.
www.decklink.com - Decklink series. Again, good cards. Cheaper than AJA, because they lack many hardware components. But still are very capable for many many tasks.
I have used and like both. What you get depends on what you need.
For output only, if you capture via firewire, then you can add the Matrox MXO. I have a review of it on the Creative Cow:
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/MXO.php
and what tape deck would you guys recommend?
What format of video will you be working with? That determines a lot. As does what format you'll be outputting to.

  • Need itunes 7 to buy music???

It now says I need itunes 7 to buy music from itunes. Can't download itunes 7 on my PC..tried but it keeps screwing up the whole computer. So, I have a $200 ipod that I can no longer purchase music for from itunes. Does anyone have a good alternative to buy music? Apple is losing my business.

iTunes 6.05 should still work to purchase music from the iTunes Store. You only should need iTunes 7 if you want to purchase videos or movies. But it may bug you to upgrade from time to time; try turning off "Check for updates" in the iTunes General preference.

  • How can I stream video from a P/DVR to my Mac

Hi, How can I stream video from a Motorola dcx3400m P/DVR to my Mac? I have tried a Slingbox but the audio is out of sync witht the TV and it drives those watching on iPads or on the iMac in another room NUTS.
Is it possible to use a TV tuner of some sort. I've looked at the eye TV thing but I live in Canada/USA region and the eye TV products all seem to be for Austrailia or the UK. The one product that might work is a DVR and I don't need to pay for that as I already have one.
    HELP!
    Jeff

If your Mac has an audio input jack you can connect the output of a cassette machine to it (3.5mm stereo jack required). However many don't, so you will need a USB audio interface - Roland make a range. Alternatively you can buy cassette decks with a built in audio interface.
You will need a program to record and edit the input: Audacity is free and is often bundled with USB-enabled players.

  • How do i install windows 8 on my 2013 imac

so my new imac arrives tomorrow and i want to install windows 8 on it. but without an optical drive, how is this even possible? do i have to go out and buy an external drive just to do this the one time?
my old imac (2010) still had an optical, but i hadnt thought of this until just now when shopping for an OEM win8 DISK
is there an alternative to buying a disk that i cant currently use?

You can use a usb thumb drive or an external optical drive. IMO it is easier to use an external usb optical drive, no creating images, making the thumb drive bootable, or copying ISOs onto the thumb drive. External optical drives are cheap.

  • Family sharing if you don't want to constantly update your devices and make your apple products redundant

    Hi everyone,
My kids have taken over our older Apple devices - i.e. iPhone and iPad - and have currently got our old stuff, apps, emails etc on their devices. I want to start these devices on a fresh start - although they've got a selected few apps that they say would be a disaster to start up again if we deleted everything.
If I go for family sharing, I believe everything has to be IOS 8 or better (probably IOS 9 tomorrow and IOS 10 the day after tomorrow - argh...). But if I upgrade the older devices (if they can upgrade at all!), they will be awfully slow or not work at all...
Apple shop recently suggested me an alternative: to buy vouchers for my kids and set-up a new apple-ID for them on each device as an alternative, although I don't have control over their purchases, but once the voucher has been used, there won't be any more purchases - only free stuff downloaded. So I don't need the kind of control that family sharing has.
All I want them to have is face-time and an own apple-ID on their devices - and let i.e. my sons FIFA15 app continue as he's been building his team for months on "my" old iPad before he took it over himself.
However, now I cannot set up a new apple-ID because there's no more me.com and I can't create an apple ID for them as they are too young...argh (again!) - (did I mention that argh is my favourite apple-expression the latest few years? Bring back the old times please....!).
    What to do?
Yes, I know - go to the apple shop and give them more of my cash to get brand new devices that needs updating and replacement in a year and throw away the old devices and pollute the world further. I would get family sharing going yes, but I would also be a lot poorer and feel like a fool for buying more apple gear.
Any other alternative - using what we've already got?
Stop apple from constantly updating and requiring upgrades of products and inventing new stuff....? It drives me nuts - but probably I wouldn't get away with that suggestion either...
Sorry for my alt-modisch view on all this or if any of my sarcastic apple comments are putting any of you off. Appreciate any feedback or ideas from you guys.

    No replies to this one?
Come on guys - whoever still likes apple products - come to their defence and show that Apple isn't totally rubbish after all????
Sarcasm aside, much appreciated if you have any tips for me...

  • Can i use my external itunes media folder on mac and windows

Ok, i have moved my media folder itunes to my external drive.
But i also have installed windows 7 on bootcamp
I want to use the same itunes media folder external on my osx and windows is this
possible didn't tryed it because i was afraid that i could damage the data.

    Hi
Yes there is a way to use the media folder with both OSX and Windows, however you have to have the drive formatted with windows NTFS and use something like Seagates NTFS for Mac program. If you buy a Seagate GoFlex Drive it comes ready formatted with the software on board to install on your mac, then anything saved on the drive will be readable from both OS.
I use a couple of these drives for just that purpose very successfully, unfortunately I haven't come across an alternative to buying the Seagate drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I install windows xp via bootcamp onto my macbook pro 15"? The XP in question is an "OEM" disk but it is NOT branded to any computer brand i.e Dell. Thanks.

Will XP be ok to use via bootcamp?
Does it matter if it's OEM?

Technically it's Lion Boot Camp Assistant doesn't support XP, it is after all 11 years old, and is a booger Microsoft is even trying to flick off with hardly much success.
    http://www.itworld.com/windows/266924/clock-ticking-xp-time-start-os-migration
The hardware in question, almost invariably will run Windows XP OK. There might even be XP video drivers for this laptop, etc. but not the easy collection of drivers for XP specifically for this Macbook. The OP would  have to track down the drivers manually. But it is possible to shrink the Mac HD volume, boot a Windows XP disk directly and have it format and install on the free space created. But it's a guess how much of a rabbit hole it is to track down XP specific drivers for this brand new hardware.
But that's the alternative to "Buy Windows 7". Of course, you can run XP in a Virtual Machine, on Lion, however.

  • Not detecting external display after waking up MBP from sleep mode

I am a recent owner of a MBP and enjoying it. However, one problem that I can't seem to find a solution to is the external display problem after sleep mode.
When I first boot up the Mac and plug in my Dell external monitor via the mini adapter, there is no problem with detection or display. However, every time I put the MBP in sleep mode and then wake it up again, the external monitor does not "wake" up and my MBP only displays my normal screen on the Mac.
I tried to 'Detect Displays' to no avail and the only solution is unplugging the mini connection and plugging it back into the MBP for the MBP to re-detect the external monitor.
Although this is a quick fix in itself, I do not want to wear out the mini port by doing this every timeI come out of sleep mode. Any solutions so that the external monitor will detect the MBP waking up from sleep and display properly? Thanks!

    And same problem here.
Using a MBP 2.66 i7 with a Dell 3008WFP that's connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. It works some of the time but once in a while (only been using the new MBP for a couple of days now) the monitor won't come out of sleep mode. Turning it off/on causes OS X to completely ignore the monitor. I was able to get this setup to work again by pressing 'Detect Displays' in the System Preferences pane but most of the times that doesn't help. The only sure way to get the monitor working again is by booting into Windows through Bootcamp, Windows is able to use the monitor, if I reboot after that OS X sees the monitor again.
Also saw a magenta line/stripe on the left side of my monitor and the monitor sometimes makes a buzzing sound when connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. That's what you get by using bleeding edge tech I guess :\ Only alternative is buying the mini-DP to dual-DVI connector but paying $99 just to be able to use an external monitor is rather insane. Besides that lots of users are having problems with this adapter.
