Alternatives to Final Cut Pro (the new version is a disaster)

Okay, like millions of others that have been setting your hair on fire since the bizarre version of iMovie Pro, or sorry, I mean Final Cut Pro, I will need to migrate my work to a different editing application. I will obviously use Final Cut Studio 3 for a few more months before I uninstall that too.
So let us discuss alternatives that you all recommend. The closest one that I can find is Adobe Premiere as it resembles final cuts interface. What are your experiences with it?
I have already purchased Avid for our media studio to replace FCP but are considering other applications too. Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.
And please do not try to advertise FCP X as a good product when it isn't. I have given up hope on the FCP application because I cannot see Apple releasing a version for it that will be an "upgrade" of the pro series, rather than a massive downgrade like the X version.

Haven't you heard?  Apple is going to fix everything that's missing and/or broken with their new, ground breaking software!!  I so excited I can't wait.
btw, I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.  Any takers?
I hope that you are being sarcastic there. In fact, I can't find a reason why you wouldn't be. It is absurd to expect us to wait for Apple to add whatever that is missing. So... we wait a year or two for a new FCP, and we are given a light version of it. Now, while the competitors are evolving with media technology, Apple is "fixing" what is broken and missing. Does that sound like the type of company you want to bet your career on?
I have been using Macs since the very old black and white Mac CE ones. And I have been a part of the evolution of all their OS version and also all the FCP versions. Yes, I even have the original FCP v1 on an old harddrive somewhere. The production company that I have been running here in the UK have been using OSX and FCP for over 10 years now. By being a part of Apple's entire product release journey, this is by far the worse upgrade (if we can even call it that) in history.
It is as if someone from Adobe came into their office, disguised as the manager for their creative direction, and told the team "Hey guys, lets just remove stuff from FCP until it reaches a point where it equals iMovie and we are set to go!". Then this Adobe character goes back to his real office and says "Hey, look at those dumb Apple people falling for this trick, there is one main competitor drained in the toilet!". I can't see this going in any different way. I say that Apple needs to focus their resources on the person who made the decision of making FCP X... I can assure them that with proper research, they will find that that individual is not who they say they are. Well, it is either that, or this individual is the biggest idiot that the company have hired... ever... but I didn't want to say that directly, as that would be rude.

  • Is there any way I can get final cut pro, the old version?

I want the old version because it's cheaper and I know how to use it better than Pro X... does anyone know where I can find the old version?

You need to look on Amazon or EBay, actually the price for a legitimate copy is likely to be much higher than FCP-X.

  • How can i uninstall the final cut pro x trial version after installing final cut pro x

How can I unintall the trial version of the final cut pro x after installing the new updated final cut pro x 10.2

I have the same issue. There are now two version of FCP X: the trial one and the purchased one. Problem is, the first hasn't been overwritten by the second, and all my projects are only visible on Final Cut Pro X Trial, and nothing on FCP X.
How and where do I get a fast answer from customer support?
    Thank you

  • Can I download final cut pro X trial version and use final cut pro 7 during and after the trial period ?

My company uses Final cut pro 7 and I have to know if we can try Final cut pro X on one of our G5 and, in the case of we can't switch to FCPX, if we can use FCP7 again without re-initialise it. Thanks
sorry for my english. it's not my maternal language.

You cannot use FCPX on a G5. It's Intel only.

  • Where can I find a Final Cut Pro 7 trial version?

    Hi,
I would really like to try out the Final Cut software, but, unfortunately, my computer is too old to run the newest version.  I could use Final Cut Pro 7, but I can not find a trial version anywhere.  What can I do?

Never has been a trial of 7.
You can get a trail of the newer 10.1.1.
Or you would have to track down a copy of Final Cut Stuio on disc, new or second hand.

  • Is Final Cut Pro the only software that can open video .MXF files for Macs?

    Hello,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
Trying to find software that will edit .MXF Video Files to work with Mac.
As the edit is simple, prefer iMovie, but happy if the Conversion software only works with FCExpress (or even FCPro if that is the only alternative).
    1. If it matters, .MXF (Material Exchange Format) Video files came from shooting on a Panasonic 500 P2. Originally downloaded onto a Windows system, using Adobe Premiere.
    2. I just want to see and convert some of the shots I did for my Reel, etc., but I have a Mac.
    3. I have iMovie HD, iMovie 09, and FCExpress (which I don't know how to use that well).
    4. When I attach an External HD with backup files of all the footage shot, they show up named as .MXF files. They appear as VLC files (VLC icon), but the suffix is .MXF.
    5. When I try to play them as VLC files, they won't play. It seems they start to play, but then the VLC software quits.
    6. So I have tried downloading some software on the Internet that Google says converts .MXF files.
I tried: iSkysoft Video Converter, AVCWare Mac Video Converter, MPEG Streamclip, and a couple others. They all seem to have basically the same conversion setups, but when I click to pick one .MXF file, none of them recognize it. (The file in my Browse window is greyed out).
    7. MoyaVideo Converter for Mac recognizes the .MXF file, but when I hit the "conversion" button - I tried a couple different settings, all it seems to convert is the first frame. Even if the .MXF file says a clip is 123MB or 43 seconds long, etc.
    8. I can't even watch the clip in Preview. Press Play and it is just the first frame.
    9. I have read elsewhere in these forums, some people touting conversion software from a company in Germany - mfxformac. I am fine with paying for conversion software, but $500?
    10. And I have read elsewhere that only Final Cut Pro has a codec that will open .MXF files. If this is so, why do the above companies claim to have software that opens .MXF files for Mac?
    11. Isn't there a further problem if I can't even see the video using VLC? Or is that because I am using Mac and need FCPro with the right codec?
Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.

MXF files from P2 can only be imported using FCP. iMovie can't, nor FCE...if you are talking about APPLE software. Avid deals with MXF files natively. But FCP will ONLY import them if the entire P2 card structure is intact. Please tell me that you have the entire P2 card backups. If not, then it won't work. If you do...then here is the process for importing into FCP:
    P2 Workflow with FCP 6
    3. I have iMovie HD, iMovie 09, and FCExpress (which I don't know how to use that well).
Then you need someone to provide you with QT files of this footage. None of them work with P2.
NONE of the converters you listed will work... Sorry.
    9. I have read elsewhere in these forums, some people touting conversion software from a company in Germany - mfxformac. I am fine with paying for conversion software, but $500?
That software is to get it to work with Final CUt Pro natively. What it doesn't do is convert the footage to QTs. There is also Raylight and Calibrated...but again, they are for FCP.
P2 is a professional format, and to use it you need professional software. iMovie won't work...nor will FCE. If you need to work with it in those formats, you need to have someone import the files and convert them to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec).
HD Log might work...but not sure what QT format it converts to. A demo is available.

  • Problems with Final Cut Pro HD Academic Version?

Is anyone out here having problems with the academic version of Final Cut Pro?
    1) Erratic capturing capability---Was able to capture for a few days, and now audio isn't in sync with video during playback.
    2) Sudden shutdowns of program
    3) Dropped frames
    4) Scratch disk QT files were in sync, and now they're playing sluggishly, indicating dropped frames.
I'm no expert, but I've never had such erratic problems with a software program before. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me. I've taken my computer in and gotten a second hard drive, had our operating system reinstalled.

  • Can you use Final Cut on the new Macbook without a firewire port?

I have a new Mac Book and am SO aggravated about the lack of a firewire jack. before I go buy a new video camera, can you even import video to Final Cut Express with a USB camcorder since it seems to ask for a firewire connection? Please, if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

    Ziatron wrote:

So why did you buy it? Most Macs have Firewire.
Most computers, never mind Mac, have Firewire... so you have to forgive him for assuming a premium-priced MacBook would have conformity to a common standard like Firewire 400.
USB camcorders use formats that use high compression to store the video files thereby lowering quality. This may be good enough to give you "decent footage" if so, then you won't have a problem using a USB camcorder. However I have never been happy with the quality that a USB camcorder provides (they always look grainy to me).
Moreover, AVCHD editing is a mess in it's current state. Files from camcorders may or may not work on the mac and even with a recent Intel machine and editing is very time consuming as there is lots of rendering needed to be done to output and archive projects. Clearly computing hardware and software has not caught up to AVCHD potential yet so it's astounding that Apple's consumer MacBook is incompatible with the way most people are transferring and editing video TODAY.

  • Final Cut and the New iMac

Does anyone know how well Final Cut will work on the dual core iMac? I can't afford the Power Mac and I am hoping to hear that the new iMac will run Final just fine. How much extra RAM should I get?
Am I right or just hopeful?
    Chris

I am sure that you know what I mean David and Patrick even though your attitude, should it happen to you, would probably be more sanguine.
I suspect that you, like me, could write a cheque for any amount and never notice it. Many Mac users though are students or otherwise on low budgets and the purchase of a computer is probably their largest expense after a house and car.
When I bought one of my cars three years ago it was due to be "upgraded" in six months and I was given a 25% discount. I realise that cars and computers are completely different but this analogy is as pertinent as Patrick's wheel trims.
The ethical thing to do would be to announce the new model a couple of months before it was due and in the interim sell off the outgoing models with either a 10% discount or something free thrown in as a sweetener.
Apple would have lost a little cash in the short term but the goodwill engendered would have accounted for much higher profits in the future.
Anyway, it's obvious that we hold differing opinions and will never completely agree on this one.
    Ian.

  • Final Cut Pro and New Logic Board

I just got back my 2.4 ghz IMAC from the Apple Store, where they replaced the logic board. Before this replacement, I was able to capture via firewire into Final Cut. Now the programs stalls when opening the capture window. Can anyone help me try to solve this problem.
    Thanks

well if you decide to do a clean install it goes like this:
Backup all your data, everything will be erased (don't forget bookmarks, pop3 emails, FTP passwords etc) and de-authorize (or whatever they call it) Adobe Creative Suite if you have it.
Boot from the OS dvd (hold down "c" key on startup {or option will work too})
    choose clean install
    Then run software update.
Then install FCS, then run updates for that.
After you get a nice, clean well running system, clone it (search the forum for "clone") with Carbon Copy Cloner, Net Restore, SuperDuper etc. You can then re-image your system in minutes, instead of a few hours.

  • Final Cut Pro x trial version question

    Hello,
I'm currently using the trial version of FCPX and I'm pretty deep into my first project. When I go to buy and download FCPX will there be any snags with the project I'm working on? I won't have to restart this project... Right?

That is correct. Your Projects and Events should be in certain folders, and these folders will not be affected by a reinstall.

  • Export through Final Cut Pro of .mov file results in non-viewable file...

    Hello,
I recently worked on a film and had asked for a .mov version of the movie so I could get an uncompressed HD version in case I wished to use it for my demo reel (video for actors).
I was present when the director exported it and he exported it from Final Cut Pro (the latest version) and he exported it as a .mov file.
Well, I just tried opening the video and it does not work. In Quicktime, the error message:
"The movie "movie.mov" can't be opened.
You may need to install additional software to open this type of file.
I'm thinking it might be a codec issue.
Do you have any suggestions as to how the movie should be exported so that I avoid this type of error message?
I tried opening the file in iTunes and I got the audio, but the video was black. Another clue that it's a codec issue.
I just need a high quality (as uncompressed as possible) file that I can then add to an editing program and insert into my demo reel. I need the high definition format to be retained.
As for the frame-rate, etc. I'm not sure. It was done with high quality and expensive video equipment and didn't use tape. I know it was high definition and widescreen as well.

Nope, I don't have Final Cut Pro on my system.
I clicked on Get Info and nothing about the codec appears.
    "Kind: QuickTime movie"
"Size: 1.99 GB on disc" (it is about 6 minutes long; that I remember)
    "Title: movie.mov"
"Last Opened" is the next and last thing that appears.
I tried opening it using VLC and the movie just stops and starts throughout. It plays for just a second and then stops and I have to keep clicking the "Play" button to get it to keep playing.
Actually, just now I tried it again in VLC and it just kept stuttering.
From VLC, I chose Media Information and under Codec Details, the following appeared:
    Stream 0:
    Type: Video
    Codec: MPEG-1/2 Video (xdvd)
    Language: English
    Resolution: 1920x1080
    Frame rate: 23.976000
    Stream 1:
    Type: Audio
    Codec: PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Language: English
    Channels: Stereo
    Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
    Bits per sample: 16
Should I ask that the movie be re-exported using the ProRes codec???
