Alternatives to Macbook Pro?

Hi all,
First of all, I am a huge fan of Apple products and own a Macbook pro purchased in 2007. I've never even imagined using a computer that is not made by Apple despite the fact that I use Windows quite a lot because of all the architecture softwares (D*mn it, you Autodesk!) . Here I am, looking for an alternative laptop to a Macbook pro. My belief has been that there's no alternative to the Macbook pro, so I didn't know where to start. After surfing around dell, sony, etc, I thought it would be fool of me not to ask you guys who may know well both Mac and other laptops.
My beloved macbook pro's battery said goodbye to me, but I didn't want to buy an one-hundred-dollar new battery because I've been thinking I need a more powerful laptop anyway. The new unibody Macbook pro 17" looked really good, but I found out that it has a built-in battery, and that Apple doesn't even sell a battery separately. I'll have to bring the laptop to the apple store and let them change the battery. (Mr.jobs, I can do the job. Please let me do it myself, saving some dollars. By the time the battery's depleted, the warranty is expired anyway!) Also, Apple is so closed that I can't trust any third party products for Apple.
After buying a $3000 laptop, the customer has to pay $200 every two-so year without any legitimate option? What is this, am I a drug addict, and they are the only drug dealer in the town? I feel like they think that their customers are all moronic zealots. (yeah, I was actually.)
Please let me hear what you guys think. Any word will be appreciated. You can give me some other options to purchase, or you can call me an idiot who doesn't know anything about the laptop and tell me to stick to the macbook pro--please don't forget to give me a reason to stick around the apple store besides calling me an idiot, though.

I understand not really trusting Apple's hard numbers, but what you can trust is that the new batteries will last longer than the previous ones. Perhaps it may not be 3x as long, depending on how you use the battery, but it should be +at least+ 2x as long.
I hear people complaining that the new battery does never last more than about 4 hours under normal circumstances.
Well, it does depend what normal circumstances are defined as. With my MBP (old, user-replaceable battery rated for 5 hours and 300 charge cycles) I can still get 4.5 hours after 1 year of use, with WiFi off and the screen brightness at the lowest setting. That's fine for me if I'm taking notes in class. For others, if they use more intensive apps, the number could be lower. Still, I can't imagine getting worse battery life than any PC when carrying out the same tasks.
I'd checked the built-in battery for 17" costs $180.
My mistake entirely. I did read that you were interested in the 17" but had the 15" in mind when I typed my reply! Sorry about that, you're right!
Obviously you'd want to do research into the third-party solutions but unless you find a large number of people complaining about them I would see no reason not to trust them, especially if the price differential is large. If you're saving $20 though, I'd go with the Apple battery.
However, I really come to hate the way Apple treats the customer
I've had the exact opposite experience. All my Apple gear works perfectly and when I did have issues in the past they've been very quick to take care of me and have the malfunctioning product repaired or replaced. You may be able to find a PC manufacturer that is better at this than Apple, or you may not. I personally doubt you will, but I don't have much experience with PCs, admittedly.

Cannot get iPad 2 charged beyond 1%.  All charging ports tried: AC adapter(s), USB 2 port on MacBook Pro. ITunes shows iPad only for a few seconds. iPad displays alternately: Apple logo, battery w/slim red band, then battery w/1% charged information. How can I get it to charge beyond 1% so I can proceed to troubleshoot?

I have had your exact problem with my old 3GS, now I cannot even get it to turn on, I still see that it is supposed to be charging though, but it never charges any so it seems.
I replaced the Lower Dock Connector Assembly back when it still charged while hooked to my PC, and it found it made no real difference.

At this point I am not sure if I should replace the battery and hope for the best, or just junk the phone, I cannot really sell it if I cannot reset it...

  • Alternatives to expanding Storage on my Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display?

I am new to the Macintosh community, for I have owned a PC most of my life. That being said, I am really accustomed to having the option of upgrading the storage drives, beit a laptop or a desktop. When I purchased my Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display, I was fully aware that upgrades were very limited, but I had no idea that it was not compatable with traditional SSDs.
After some googling, I found OCW selling SSD chips made specifically for the MBPr, but they were not cheap by any means. I wanted to ask the Apple community and see if there are any good alternative options for expanding storage on a MBPr. Are there any external hardrives/SSDs that anyone can personally recommend? I have never used any external drives before, and I do not want to purchase a "bad" drive persay.
    Thanks!

You can sometimes find larger capacity Retina 'daughter card' flash storage devices on eBay - but, like the OWC solution, they don't come cheap. So, as you've deduced, your best (yet not overly inexpensive, either) bet is a fast external drive. The fastest external drives would have Thunderbolt connections - I've two of LaCie's 2big Thunderbolt drives (one 4TB and one 8TB) and they're nice and fast, but not cheap.
If I were you, I would head over to MacMall and search for Thunderbolt drives: they come with a variety of option in a variety of storage space.
That's going to be your fastest solution, even if not highly portable.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

lost my application dvd that came with macbook pro, early 2011. any alternatives to get the applications in that??

I'm not sure how this is an iTunes issue, but anyway, other than buying the apps from the Mac App Store (note that iDVD and iWeb are not available via the App Store), the only alternative is to call Apple support and give them the serial number of your Mac. They can usually sell you a new disk set for a reasonable fee.
    Regards.

  • Airport card broken on MacBook Pro 2012, alternatives for wifi?

    Hello All,
I dropped my MacBook Pro 2012 and immediately it said that Airport Card is not installed, nor Bluetooth. I took it to Apple Service and after they looked at it, they told me the entire logic board will need to be replaced in order to fix it. Obviously I won't be forking out 700 euros for a new one when I can just get a new MacBook eventually, I was just hoping to get a few more months out of it.
My question is can I use a wireless usb adapter to pick up wifi, or an airport express? I bought today a D-Link Wireless adapter usb and it is not installing for some reason. I have IOS X Mavericks 10.9.5 If I use the Airport Express how do I go about setting this up?
Thanks for any help, I am fairly confused at this point!

You need to buy a USB wireless that is Mac compatible.. and it must have drivers available for Mavericks.. not just Mac compatible.. It is not easy to find them but look on ebay.. just search usb wireless mac.
You must double check though.. DWA-125 proclaims itself as mac compatible.. that means.
    (Mac OS X,  10.4.X,  10.5.X, 10.6.X)
Mavericks made a big jump as did Lion and apparently so does Yosemite.. do don't expect drivers will jump out at you. I have tried lots of USB sticks and they seldom work.
Many companies lie.. or bend the truth and they say Mac compatible and mean.. up to snow leopard.
    or an airport express?
Yes, you can use an express.. but not by USB.. that means on a MBPr you will need to buy a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter (forget the USB one.. it is 2.0 useless junk).. as well as the express and setup the express as wireless bridge. This is great for a static computer.. but rather less than portable.
I think it is such a shame we lost the old Express port.. PCMCIA as it was in earlier days.. it was great for this sort of thing.. and was better as it actually connects to the main bus in the computer..
Otherwise move up your new computer replacement date.

  • Alternative way to backup Microsoft outlook in MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro 2010 model with OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion.My MacBook restarting time to time and need to backup my old outlook mails{ I cannot export(Outlook for Mac Data FIle (.olm))mail backup because of it's restarting}.
A quick backup method, I already dragged the folder "Microsoft User Data" from "Documents" folder to an external drive.
Is it("Microsoft User Data") possible or enough to restore my outlook mail once I repair my MacBook.?
    Thanks.

In MacBook pro, you firstly find the backup file location in harddrive. Generally, it is found at the location mentioned below:
    /Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2011 Identities/Main Identity/Data Records
After finding data record, make a backup copy in external device. Now you can start repairing your MacBook Pro. After repair, you can use backed up data for Outlook mail again.

  • TS1884 What if the Safe Boot progress bar stops (around the 25%-30% mark)? Any other alternatives I have to get my MAcBook Pro to boot without running into an error?

    Hi,
after starting my MacBook Pro I was faced with a grey screen stating that "an error has occurred, you need to restart your computer". I did that multiple times but the same message appeared each time. So I started the Safe Boot. Now the progress bar is stuck at the 25-30% progress mark since 30 min. Any advise on what to do from here?
Any help and advise is much appreciated!

I doubt that shutting it off will do any harm but don't do it too often.

  • Can anyone help me solve the problem of text displaying very rough on my new ASUS PA279Q display monitor running off my MacBook Pro?

This is regarding a brand new ASUS PA 279Q, 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor. I'm connected via mini display port (into thunderbolt port on MacBook Pro) to display port on ASUS monitor; using cable ASUS included with the monitor. Mid 2012 MacBook Pro…full specs at bottom of this post.
I have resolution set at 2560 x 1440 which is the native resolution according to the ASUS spec. I tried the other resolutions available in my System Preferences and text displayed rough with those settings too. I've tried adjusting contrast, brightness and sharpness via the ASUS control panel and didn't solve the problem. Also tried calibrating via Mac's system preferences/display and that did not improve text display either. All the text on this monitor (no matter what software I launch, Finder, InDesign, Illustrator, MS Word, Excel, VMWare Windows XP, Windows versions of Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc, all are consistently rendering text the same way ---  ROUGH and with "HALOS" around each letter.
All point sizes of text and at various scales, display very rough on the screen. (My comparison is the retina display of my MBP and a Thunderbolt…so those two displays are my expectations.) I'm using the same MBP for both a Thunderbolt display (at work) and this ASUS at my home office.
On the ASUS it's not as noticeable when the text is on white backgrounds, but I'm a graphic designer and compose images with text all day everyday. Not to mention the specs on this ASUS PA279Q indicate it's built for the professional so I would expect better text rendering. I haven't even addressed color calibration and balance yet, because that won't matter to me if the text won't display any better than it is now.
I was so hopeful after researching all the specs on this monitor it would be a viable alternative to the glossy display of the Thunderbolt display. (Which, I do love the Thunderbolt display for it's clarity and how it displays crisp, clean text at all sizes. (This ASUS actually displays text decently if I increase the text so each letter is about 4" high. Which is pointless for practical purposes -- that'd be like doing page layout through a microscope!)
I kept holding off on getting a monitor for the home office thinking the Thunderbolt would be updated soon. I'd be sick if I dropped a grand on piece of 2011 technology only to learn a few days later an updated Thunderbolt display hit the market! Not to mention, I'm praying Apple comes out with a less reflective Thunderbolt display. The glare and reflection is the main reason I looked elsewhere for a large monitor; hence my asking for help. Hoping the ASUS text display issue can be worked out. My expectation is for it to display like the MBP retina and Thunderbolt display text. That possible?
Alternatively, I guess I could do the Apple Refurb Thunderbolt at $799. And see if there's a decent aftermarket anti-glare I could stick on it?
Thanks for reading my post. Hope someone can help; offer any suggestions? Words or wisdom?
Has anyone else had similar issues and figured out a resolution? Help!
    MacBook Pro
    Retina, Mid 2012, 2.3 Ghz Intel i7
    8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    OS X 10.8.5
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    ASUS PA279Q

I uninstalled those two items. It still runs slow on start-up and when opening safari, firefox, iphoto, itunes, etc. It's not snappy like it used to be. Any other ideas? Thanks.

  • New External Monitor for Logic on MacBook Pro - Suggestions

I'm in the painful process of updating my studio and now my large screen external monitor has started failing.
I know if this a pretty general question more suited to the MacBook Pro forum but I'd like some input from folks used to working with an application like Logic in a home studio environment.
I guess the issue for me is that I'm not getting any younger and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. One of the things specific to Logic and music software in general is that there are LOTS of very detailed dialog boxes with text that is not always height adjustable (yes I know about zooming and indeed I do lots of that but it gets quite distracting). The other factor is that I'm often recording and engineering myself which means I'll be sitting with a guitar in my lap or at a keyboard and can't always lean in too close to the monitor.
I solved this by buying a large 26" Acer which sits on my desk behind the Mackie MCU. To my left I've got the MacBook 15.4" Pro on a keyboard stand above my MIDI controller at a 45 degree angle to the desk.
It's worked quite well until the Acer seems to have become haunted. It will mysteriously reboot itself intermittently, going blank for a second, then showing the Acer logo and going back to picture. It will also turn itself on spontaneously when the computer is off (the status light is off and then turns itself on). It seems to detect when I'm in the middle of a really good session and starts resetting itself every 30 seconds or so. Then it will work fine sometimes for days or weeks at a time. I've checked it on 4 different computers, it malfunctions on all. I believe in may be a problem with one of the capacitors or the inverter, I'm not sure, but it's driving CRAZY at this point.
And of course now it's 3 months out of warranty and may be more expensive to fix than buying a new one.
So my issue is what monitor to replace it with. I've considered buying an Apple monitor, since the display is lovely to look at but there are a couple things that are deal breakers.
    It's expensive. Very expensive.
Oddly you have to choose between a 24" and a 30", with nothing in between. Don't want to sound like Goldilocks here, but the 24 is tooooo small and the 30 is tooooo big.
Yeah I know bigger is usually better but since they bumped the native resolution of the 30" up to 2560x1600 it's really sharp but things like the menu text get really quite small. Yes you can reset to a lower non native resolution, but then you loose the sharpness. I tested Logic in the store on the 30" and it did look great but I found I actually had to move my whole body around to see things at the top and bottom of the screen.
Oh and did I mention that it's expensive? Jeez.
The 24" now seems to look a bit small to me after using the same resolution (1920x1200) on the Acer's 26" screen. (Ok, I think it's actually 25.5 but hey that half an inch can make a big difference and I will avoid making any bad jokes here).
And did I mention the Apple monitors are expensive? The 24" is almost 3 times as expensive as a cheaper alternative.
I also still have a PC here that I use (sorry) and the Apple monitors have very limited connectivity. So I think unfortunately the Apple monitors are out for me.
So I;m down to a couple other non Apple options. I will not buy an Acer again since I believe now that their quality control is not good and their support is absolutely atrocious. Shame I used to be a big fan of Acer PC's, but after owning a couple I'm steering clear.
My biggest issue right now is that most of the new budget monitors are geared toward 1080p HD uses so they are they are maxing out at 1920x1080 (16:9 aspect ratio instead of 1920x1200's 16:10). So the tradeoff here is that HD movies will look better in 16:9, but 16:10 gives you "squarer" pixels and more vertical resolution for screen hungry apps like Logic.
Any opinions on this? I'm a bit new to the Mac so I don't know if I'm really better off going with a 1920x1200 screen like the Apple monitors.
Also, I know this may just be a bug in the Acer's scaling, but if I switch to 1920x1080, I lose the menus off the top of the screen or if I adjust the vpos I lose the dock at the bottom. Downscaling to 1600x1050 or even 1024x768 works fine. If I get a 1080 screen and set the resolution appropriately will it work correctly and without too much distortion?
I'm also curious what is the best way to hook up the monitor? I'm currently using the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the MacBook. My Pro is the slighter older silver keyboard model so it has the standard DVI out. Will I see any real improvement by going over to using DVI directly?
Also I'm wondering how people feel about glossy vs matte for music. My current displays are the non-glossy and I do think I prefer them for detail work.
    The candidates right now are
Hanns-G HH-281HPB 28" @300$. It's one of the only budget monitors that uses 1920x1200. All the right inputs (DVI, VGA). I'm just afraid this might be a bit too good to be true. It's really cheap and after having problems with a "cheap" Acer (although it wasn't so cheap 3 years ago!) I don't want similar problems. Stand has no swivel or tilt (a big problem for my use). Also that resolution on such a big screen might be good for me or it might look grainy I don't know I haven't seen it. Anybody have any experience with these?
Samsung P2770H 27" @339 Looks nice, good color. Sadly only 1080 native resolution. Stand doesn't swivel, but does tilt. No VGA input, so won't work with my old PC (although strangely it says it comes with a VGA cable). They get generally good reviews and I know Samsung makes very good flat panel TV's.
ViewSonic X Series VX2739WM 27" @350. Once again maxes out at 1080. It's fast (1ms), has VGA input. I've never been a big fan of ViewSonic but they do seem to have gotten better color-wise. Tilt no swivel and it's anti-glare (not sure this is a plus).
There are also similar options from HP, Asus, LG and Sceptre but they are all 1080. In fact outside of the Apples, the Hanns-G and a few expensive monitors from NEC they all seem to be 1080. So if I really want the 1200 the Hanns-G seems like the only way to go.
Any input here would be greatly appreciated.

No doubt, the Apple displays are gorgeous. The first time I saw the 30" display wow, I wanted one BAD and it's actually what prompted me to buy a "big" monitor. The colors are great with a rich wonderful saturation level and as usual for Apple the form factor design is stunning. You know for that picture quality I could even get over the sticker shock and save up for one.
Which is why I was so disappointed when I actually sat down in the store and started to use Logic on one. I imagine for doing video work, graphic design or darn near anything else, it would be great. But for Logic I just found myself bending and twisting trying to look at toolbar at the bottom and then up to look at the menus. And instrument or plugin displays that were hard coded to look OK at lower resolutions looked really, really tiny to me. For me and particularly using Logic having 2 slightly smaller displays at a 45 degree angle makes more sense.
And once again the 24 seems just a bit small. I don't understand why they have a 27" iMac but you can't buy a 27" display. So iMac 27" starting at 1699, subtract out the cost of the CPU and drive ie the Mini and I'd really buy one. Strangely you can buy a 21.5" or a 27" iMac. Or you can buy a 24" or 30" display. Hmmmm.
So don't get me wrong I'm not bashing Apple for being expensive. They put a lot of money into R&D and into really thinking about the form and the function of their products. As a recent convert from being a PC developer for 25+ years, hey I've more than sipped the Kool-Aid here, I've guzzled it. They make great products and yeah they're more expensive, because they ARE better! I've now got 2 MBP's, 2 iPods, I'm about to get an iPhone (silly "death grip" or not) and I really want an iPad. Heck I'd really love an 8 core MacPro if I could afford one (alas I can't).
I guess my only gripe here is that there always seems to be a little less choice in the Apple world. Yeah, I know they do a lot less volume than the PC clone world I just think that they always seem to have a big gap between the high end and low end with not enough in between. So you can choose between the lower end and one piece units with no expansion boards (the mini or the iMac) or go straight to monster tower MacPro (way over 3K with display). You can get a MacBook but then you have to put up with a small screen or go with MacBook Pro, which let's face it is a lot of computing power for someone who just wants to web surf and write some email without squinting.
So here I am stuck in the middle. I don't want to buy a HannspreeQG or another piece of junk that's going to last 3 years and 3 months because of a crappy $2 capacitor that no seems to able to fix or care about fixing. I'd like to buy a really nice Apple monitor, I just want a big monitor, not a huge one and not a "medium" one (I know I'm spoiled but 24" seems "medium" these days).
Sorry about the rant here but my monitor is shutting down every 30 seconds and I'm about to go completely insane and toss it out the window!!!
Really glad to hear about that 84' VGA cable. I never imagined such a thing existed or would work without some sort of signal boost on the way. Very cool for me. My electronic drum kit is in another room and I would love to have a small cheap monitor next to it for sequencing. I had my laptop on a stand next to it for a while but I began to get terrified that I'd let a drumstick slip and destroy my laptop screen. That would be a very bad thing. Thanks for the tip.

  • HT3669 Where did you get the driver information for the HP 4MV.  I cannot connect to MacBook Pro on 10.6.8 and believe you have information that might help.  Please advise ASAP.

Apple published a report - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669#HP - that states system 10.6.8 supports the HP LaserJet 4MV.  If this is accurate information, I would like to know where the drivers are located.  I have spent more than three hours with your technical support and no one has a clue how to make this combination work.  Please help ASAP.  Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
We are all users here. There is no one from Apple responding on these user forums.
You did not mention which interface you are trying to use, or what steps Apple support had you try already, so I'll start with basics.
Your mid-2009 MacBook Pro would have shipped with OS X 10.5 'Leopard', and OS X 10.5 and prior versions supported the AppleTalk network connection and protocols, as well as others.
OS X 10.6, 'Snow Leopard' dropped support for AppleTalk.
So, Snow Leopard 10.6.8 likely does contain the correct DRIVER for your printer, BUT if your printer was originally connected via AppleTalk, AppleTalk will not work with Snow Leopard. Period.
There is at least one recently-published workaround to connect your printer via Ethernet, provided that you have the OPTIONAL HP Ethernet MIO interface card installed in your HP LaserJet 4MV printer.
If your printer DOES have the optional Ethernet interface, you can reconfigure your printer to use Ethernet instead of Appletalk. No, it's not 'plug and play' like AppleTalk was, but patiently following detailed step-by-step instructions it can be made to work.
The HP forums contains brief instructions on how to configure MIO Ethernet, and once configured, how to select the 4MV driver within this thread:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-Printing-and-Scanning/Laserjet-4mv/td-p/1176843
This Macrumors forum thread contains a post by TrumpSAJ with more detailed configuration instructions:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=8748935#post8748935
Other World Computing has an older guide linked here:
    http://blog.macsales.com/1897-appletalk-not-available-in-snow-leopard
And a thread on Gigaom discussing some other alternatives to Ethernet (for a variety of printers):
    http://gigaom.com/apple/how-to-resurrect-your-appletalk-printer-in-snow-leopard/
In my opinion, if you don't already have an HP Ethernet MIO card installed in your circa 1995 printer, then it's time to buy a new printer. Spending more money to 'upgrade' something that old doesn't seem like a good investment.

  • Hi all...  Just upgraded from OSX 10.6.8 to Mavricks, my Macbook Pro boots really slowly, and closes slowly.  I'd really appreciate help!

I just installed Mavricks over Snow Lepard, and my boot speed is really slow and so is the quit time.  From boot to ability to use apps. is slightly greater than 1 minute.  Once the desk top appears, the icons in the dock and all aps are not active for at least 25-30 seconds.  I would really appreciate any advice anyone more knowledgeable that I can offer.  I have attached my system boot log from BOOT_TIME to 1 minute past the time on the clock when I logged in. (I apologize in advance for the length of the log, but hopefully it will suply the needed clues):

Thanks again... Happy upcoming Turkey Day!

In the future please don't post so much information unless you are asked for it. Most of what you posted is useless.
    Here's what you can try:
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
