Alternatives to Spotify

This latest desktop update is the straw that broke the camels back for many paying customers. So I ask: What alternatives to Spotify have you tried, and would you recommend? List pros and cons.

Deezer, hands down straight upgrade, especially after the latest Spotify patch that completely screwed the desktop client.
At the end of this month, when my Spotify is supposed to charge for a new month, I will be cancelling my subscription.
I have already moved and subscribed to to Deezer Premium+ 2 days ago and I have moved all my playlists and songs there.
I am sick of Spotify's incompetence and "updates" that end up TAKING FUNCTIONS AWAY.
Spotify is the only program that I have that gets **bleep**tier with each new update instead of better, except maybe for World of Warcraft.

  • New icon color horrible! (1.0.9)

Why did you change the soft green color to a screaming teal? It's absolutely disgusting.

Looks OK on a smartphone or even a tablet but on a 27" display looks horrible, its out of keeping with every colour on my system, no other company of the many programs on this PC has decided to use a hi-vis jacket colour, it's a blot on my desktop, fortunately there are more alternatives to Spotify than ever. What looks OK or works on a small screen can't just be moved over to a desktop, MS learned that hard lesson with Windows 8 - it's like King Canute trying to hold the tide back as Spotify eventually fix one problem they go and make other on the same day, & seem proud of it which beggars belief ~ (we've changed the colour, nice isn't it - No it is not, it's bloody dreadful with huge bells on)

  • Alternatives to iTunes?

I've been using iTunes for over ten years, starting on my dual-USB iBook running System 9.  It's been a bumpy road at times, but I've now reached a point where there is little redeeming value in the bloated mess known as iTunes 11.  Does anyone have ideas for alternative players that just play music?  Ideally something that can start up in less than 60 seconds, and doesn't have a UI that takes 5 seconds to resopnd to button presses, and can stream to Airport Expresses.  I have AirFoil, and it works great with Spotify -- but Spotify has its own issues with muddling my library with the online one (and ads).  I use iTunes on my Macbook Pro, and on my Windows desktop, so it would be great if the replacement ran on both (but not required).
Any ideas would be appreciated!  Thanks.

There are no alternatives if you want to buy and play tracks from the iTunes Music Store.
If you can continue to use iTunes for the iTMS or don't care, you can try the now-free Audion. It's no longer in development, but from what I've seen it still works quite well (though your mileage may vary).

  • Launch Spotify in Romania

I think that given the current alternatives:- Zonga- Deezer- Apple Music (in the not-so-distant future) Spotify would be wasting a chance to get further into the eastern market if it does not launch in Romania as well. There are already a lot of musicians from Romania on Spotify, which means that securing licensing agreements couldn't have been that hard. Furthermore, following the example of deezer which comes bundled with Orange voice contracts, respectively zonga and vodafone, I think that Spotify could seize this opportunity to secure a deal with Telekom and either bundle their services or just outright open here as well. It makes a lot of sense especially since Spotify opened in Hungary and Bulgaria as well. The expansion would only be natural and it would also further drive down the hated piracy phenomenon in the balkans and eastern europe. In the 21th century on a competing market, spotify's ease of use, multiplatform, streaming quality and array of artists would ensure a switch over from the other services to spotify. I was told by a Spotify support representative, a few months back that it is planned to launch Spotify in Romania as well, however, somehow, those plans changed, and the "official facebook page" was taken down, and now, the official position is that nobody knows when this is happening. I only want to know the truth, and use this service without resorting to all sorts of loopholes to enjoy it.  I think it's time people in my country are treated the same way others are all over europe. There's bad seeds everywhere, but I don't think everyone has to be held accountable for the actions of the few. If you demand respect, you should show respect.

  • Songs that aren't in Spotify yet

    Hello guys,
Just wanna ask can we request songs to Spotify? Well I like some songs that aren't in Spotify and I really want them to be there. Or if we can't request what can we do? Is there any alternative?
    Appreciate some solutions

Spotify wants all the world's music, and they're working hard on making this happen for you. However sometimes agreements can’t be reached with the artist or label or a change may happen in music ownership.
Spotify adds thousands of albums and artists are added every day. If you can’t find an artist you’re looking for, they may appear (or reappear) soon. In the meantime, feel free to contact the artist or their label to ask when they plan to be on Spotify

  • [Windows] Spotify Window or Title and MenuBar is left on a Windows 7 non-Aero desktop after exit

DescriptionSpotify' 1.0.10.107 leaves its Title bar, MenuBar, and frame on screen after a /File/Exit or a window [X] close when a Windows 7 non-Aero desktop theme is in use.  Sometimes the entire window is left.  The spotify.exe processes terminate, though SpotifyWebHelper remains.  The Title bar or window has no parent and its menu bar is inactive.  It is not redrawn if an object is dragged over it or by a right-click refresh.  The window vanishes properly if the “Close Button Should Minimize Spotify” advanced setting is selected and Spotify is then exited from the icon in the tray.  The Spotify window vanishes as expected with a fast zoom effect if any of the Windows 7 Aero themes is in use regardless of the above advanced setting.. A more detailed description, using numbered stepsWas using a Windows 7 Basic Theme with a black desktop background. Observed the above-described behavior with unknown Spotify version, believe it to have been 1.0.10.107
Could find no entry describing this behavior as I saw it on any forumBrowsed the windows desktop troubleshooting help page Uninstalled Spotify with its uninstaller and all related appdata and registry entries using Revo uninstallerDownloaded and reinstalled Spotify from link on the help page 1.0.9.133.gcedaee38 was installed.  Note from the next step that the download link on the troubleshooting help page appears to be obsolete. Checked the Help/About screen and was offered upgrade to v1.0.10.107 Downloaded, upgraded, and confirmed that 1.0.10.107.gd0dfca3a was installed and restartedRepeated the issue with task manager showing running processes and noted. Developed a hunch that the desktop theme might be involved since this has to work for most users. Changed to the Windows 7 default Aero theme and observed Spotify to behave as I expected.Confirmed that it worked with several different Aero themes. Window opened and closed completely with a zoom effect and exit was complete. Returned to the Windows 7 Basic theme and again observed the abandoned window. My Operating System:  Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 64-bitSpotify version:  10.0.10.107.gd0dfca3aInternet provider: AT&T Internet ServicesFactory-Installed Dell Windows 7My username: dlpoole Do you have any screenshots you can attach to more clearly explain your issue?

That you have encountered this in other apps suggests a flaw in a library common to those apps and to Spotify or some particular tool that was used to build them.  I was able to replicate it on three different Win7 machines with two different CPU and graphics configurations. I couldn’t replicate it on a Windows 10 upgrade of one of those but I regard that machine as experimental until other apps more critical to me have been confirmed or made compatible with Windows 10.  Windows 7 will be my workhorse for some time, so the best workaround for me is to accept the “close button should minimize Spotify” setting and the risk of leaving it active in the notification area while streaming to no one. The alternative workaround is to refresh the non-Aero desktop after closing it. It’s a second click either way.

  • My spotify won't recognize my premium account

Whenever I log in to spotify, it says that I have to either update my profile for the country I am in, or upgrade to premium.  I updated the country to match my IP, and it wouldn't work.  Then, I upgraded to premium, and that doesn't work either.  It won't let me go online or listen to music.  What should I do?

Is your account showing as premium on your online overview?
If it is showing as premium then you should be good to go! Sometimes a quick log out and back in again is needed. If you are still having issues, try a clean reinstallation of the application.
If your account is still showing as free then you have not logged into the account you have upgraded. Double check your details, its amazingly easy to accidentally have two accounts, one with a Spotify username and another using your Facebook details. If you can't find your account, don't subscribe again as you might be billed twice, instead get in touch with the customer services team directly using the online contact form and they will be able to lend a hand.
If you get an automated email reply back directing you to the community or help pages, you need to reply directly to that email (even if its from no-reply) and one of the customer services agents will get back to you as soon as possible.

  • Help! No option to quit Spotify

How do i quit with spotify. I want to delete mine account. There is no option after i log in. According the to manual it should be possible after i log in, but the specific page don't show Amy options. Are there alternatives? The helpdesk of Spotify has only one task and that is to refer to this forum.
I tried multiple devices and types of browsers. I live in The Netherlands.
    Please help. Gr Jelmer Bode

    Hey Jelder, Welcome!
Personally I wouldn't recommend to completely remove your Spotify account as there is no way to recover a deleted account. Let's say that you change your mind in a couple of months/years, then you should rediscover all the amazing tracks you gathered over the past.
If you really wish to remove your account, then get in touch with the spotify support team by using the online contact form or by tweeting  on twitter.
If you get an auto reply back directing you to the help pages, just reply directly to that email (even if its from no-reply) and one of the employees will get back to you as soon as possible.
Spotify usually responds within 24-48 hours. If you already e-mailed Spotify, then reply to the e-mail that refered you to the community.

  • External equalizers not working with Spotify

I'm using Spotify on a 2nd gen Motorola Moto LTE, Android version 5.0.2. I'm trying to get an external equalizer to work with Spotify, as the bundled one is close to worthless (as it doesn't allow setting the levels of the bands, just choosing between 4 presets). So far I haven't found a working solution. Most eq's don't affect sound at all. The most promising failure so far has been an app called "Equalizer" from "Smart Android apps llc", which works sometimes, but has a lot of issues (crashing after notification sound has been playing, no sound on phone calls.).
This is what I've tried so far:
    1. All the top hits on Play when searching for "eq". Many recommend turning of the "Sound effects" service, this has no effect however, even after much rebooting and so on.
    2. Removing and reinstalling Spotify. Resetting phone to factory state and reinstalling Spotify.
    3. Disabling 'nuplayer' in developer settings looked promising, but unfortunately it is already disabled.
If you have any other suggestions, I'll be happy to try them.

Our (old) external Firewire iSights can be sensitive to dust, shock, vibration, humidity, and other environmental factors in storage.  (I store my spare in its original plastic shipping case with a new desiccant pack on a solid shelf - never in a desk drawer or other container that moves.)
You have tried several good things and may be finding that your old iSight needs work.
Here are the alternatives I can offer.  Consider any you have not tried in any order you like:
    (1) You can try Apple's suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
Test in more than one user account and with more than one Apple softwre application.
    (2) My expanded suggestions here: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
    (3) Reset Firewire ports using the info from this old archived Apple article: http://web.archive.org/web/20090331211534/http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
    (4) If you have no local Apple Authorized service Provider who can help you, other service options are here: http://www.apple.com/support/isight/service/
    (5) Consider a new USB cam with current warranty such as one of these: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/

  • Spotify Premium without credit card?!?!

I got a Spotify account yesterday and downloaded it unto my computer and iPhone. However I noticed that I had Spotify Premium. I never signed up for Spotify Premium and I did not give any credit card information. I checked the subscription page and it said that I had Spotify Premium till 3-26-2012 unless I renewed my subscription so I'm guessing I'm on the free trial. But I thought you needed a credit card to have the free trial.  What's going on? Am I going to be charged or is something wrong? Also, if I don't give my credit card number, am I going to be asked to be charged or will they charge me from my phone or something? Please help!!!!!!!!

Since I got a similar question I won't create a new topic and simply write here.
This credit card topic was created nearly a year ago, it might have changed in some countries.
However, in mine (Austria) it has not. I can't buy anything without my credit card. I understand for the subscriptions I'll need a credit card. That's okay. What I don't get is the thing, why I should need a credit card for purchasing a so called "e-card", the only way I thought to get to a premium subscription. I got paypal and transfered some money on it, regardless I need to put in my credit card, as if it was a subscription.
Is there any chance of changing this so it becomes possible to get a premium subscription without credit card? At least you should change your Paypal methods on gift cards, I don't get a clue why I need a card here.
When I look to germany, they offer a function called "Sofortüberweisung", translated instant transfer. That is what is needed for Austria too. You should know, in Austria credit cards aren't so common like to other countries, because it has been developed an local alternative to pay something per card, which can't be compared with a VISA or so.
So let me know when it becomes possible to spend my money for your services.

  • Spotify thinks I'm in the wrong country. Can't change country

I can't get spotify to go online because it thinks I'm in the wrong country. My profile says, that I'm from the USA, but I never made that setting. I'm from germany and have a german IP. I can't change my country in my profile on my own, because its greyed out. Please change the country to germany. My Accountname is fernetbranco
    Thank you.

If you can't change your country on your online profile but your IP address is being correctly located, get in touch with support using the online contact form and they will be able to get it changed over manually for you.

  • Integration of Spotify and BMW Connected Drive

It would be great to be able to manage Spotify through BMW iDrive, either by a dedicated Spotify app on BMW system or at least by a connection of iDrive controls with Spotify app on the iPhone.

Spotify should immediately start a discussion with BMW and "appsolute GmbH" who is assisting BMW with their "BMW Connected" app. There are 2 different approaches: Become integrated with the BMW Connected app itself, so that it will be available as an own choice within that app (the webradio provider Tunein Radio has already done this, and it works perfectly like a "radio alternative")  -----  or create a API for the Spotify App itself, that will be controllable from the car's menu via the Apps menu (The music service provider "Aupeo" has already done this, but it's a bit ackward, because it doesn't allow using the other BMW Connected services (like facebook, twitter, news etc while playing music).... The best would maybe be a combination of the both, because that would allow the user to play "offline tracks", at the same time as being able to use all other BMW Connected services.... :smileylol: Mog is, as mentioned, already running for BMW in USA, so I think Spotify will be the most favourable and BEST choice for the European market :)

  • [Desktop] Return the possibility to launch Spotify minimized to tray upon Windows logon

You returned the possibility to minimize Spotify to tray by clicking the close button in version 1.0.7 and I am eternally grateful for that. Now it only lacks one more thing - add a fourth option to the "Open Spotify automatically after you log into the computer" setting.Currently there are 3 options - "Minimized", "Yes" and "No". The fourth option should be "Minimized to tray".I want to be able to start listening to music just by pressing the Play button on my keyboard; many times I don't even open the Spotify window (I do that only to change the playlist or perform a search), so I don't need the Spotify window taking space in my taskbar upon Windows logon. In version 0.9.x it was possible to achieve this behaviour, so I think this functionality should be retained. An alternative to adding the fourth option would be that once I choose the "Minimized" startup option, it would automatically decide whether it will launch minimized to taskbar or to the tray, based on the value of the "Close button should minimize the Spotify window to the tray" setting - if I remember correctly, this was the way it behaved in version 0.9.x.

  • Spotify is a problem for the Mac OSX update Yosemite 10.10

    Hello,
When i downloaded the new update for the Mac: OSX Yosemite 10.10 - my macbook could'nt be shut down anymore.
I've called the Apple helpdesk and we both tried to figure out what was causing this problem. After some tests it seemed that Spotify was the problem of all this. (Something that is called Spotify manager? was failing with the start up of my Mac).
So i hope this problem can be fixed, because i had to delete Spotify for that my Macbook could work normally again.
And it's ashame, because i can't use Spotify anymore now.
I hope that this will be fixed, so i can enjoy music again.

Same here, tried to install first time on 10.10.4, gets a black screen and can't quit app. Looks like this app is not compatible with OSX 10.10 That's awesome, how do you expect Mac users to stick with your company when there is an alternative for the same price. Even more so when your app does not even run properly on OSX updates. Get it fixed, fast or I'm leaving. I'm a premium user, not a freebee.
