Alternatives to using Zenworks for Roaming Profiles

Novell support tells me I should be using a dedicated Server for Zenworks
This would be a real over kill!
So, are there any alternatives to using Zenworks for Roaming profiles?
Googeling I see SAMBA can support Roaming Profiles
Samba is installed & I created Samba users via SBE Admin but when I select
Samba Administration - seems to be no details ie. users, workgroup name etc?
Is Novell Samba differently?
Is it possible setup Roaming Profiles with Novell Samba?

I'm gonna attempt this with a couple of scripts - (one added to login script
& the other at shutdown)
to copy Desktop & Favorites - already told users they will be shot if the
they put files in my docs!
(It would be nice to do Desktop Colour / Image etc so the user feels at home
but...)

  • Best Practice for Roaming Profiles over Branch Offices

    Hello Everybody,
I was hoping I could gain advice from experienced engineers on an issue me and my team are currently experiencing.
    The issue:
We have a client that has their main office in London and this company has other remote offices over the world, Paris, Milan, Luxembourg etc.. Each remote office has a local DC&file server installed as two separate servers or both roles on the same
server. Everything is central to London, all the main file shares that the company uses is based in London and the terminal server's are based in London too.
We have DFS-R & N set up on the London File servers to replicate the dfs shares over the remote offices which works fine and we don't generally ever have any issues with this and works well when user's in remote offices access file shares from
    London.
However and I didn't set this up but this client also has DFS-R & N set up for roaming profiles!!! The issue we are having here is only with the terminal servers. For example I will log in as one of the users from London on the terminal server and will
load the profile fine, I will log that user off and log in as the admin and remove the profile through advanced system settings. I will then log back on as that same user and will be given a temporary profile, I repeat the first step and the profile loads
fine, so every other log on will load the user with a temporary profile. I know this is the case because for that user, if I change the profile path in AD from
    \\xxxx.com\public to
\\lon-fs3v\profiles$\user it then loads every time with no issues. Before anyone asks I have rebuilt the terminal server(s) to rule out if they were misconfigured. You may ask why not do that for everyone? We can't do that for people based in Milan otherwise
their profile will forever take time to load and that's where the dfs replication comes into play for the profiles.
Unfortunately they are a very stubborn client so some users (important people) have very large profiles which sometimes takes a while to load up.
I have done some reading already on the web and have seen the unsupported scenario from Microsoft regarding this (
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/2533009 )  so unsure the best way to do it. The link I've put in does say you can have issues with the profiles loading (which we do) if there are too many
connections which we have 10 to replicate profiles around the remote offices.
I have done some reading into the hostedbranch cache method but not sure if you can do this with roaming profiles or not?
We generally want to eliminate the issue for users when logging on remotely with getting a temp profile every other log on attempt. I must add though this issue never occurs on the workstations just the terminal server, our client is in the private equity
market so one user may just spend one day in a remote office and then come back to London to carry on as they normally would.
So that's the background to the issue and I was generally trying to work out what methods or if this is possible with the branch cached method for roaming profiles ?
Thank you to anyone who replies.
    Best,
    Liam

    Hi UC3ngineer,
    Agree with Luca.
If the branch users need to do lot of conferencing, the best practice is to deploy an new Front End Pool and an Edge Server in Branch Office; Otherwise you must have a 100%
reliable WAN connection to your central site.
    Best regards,
    Eric

  • Microsoft Word 2010 Hiding/Removing the Navigation Pane for Roaming Profiles

    Hello all,
I am attempting to do what the title says.  We are using Citrix Profile Manager...basically roaming profiles and when updating the Office version to 2010,  users are displayed the Navigation Pane.  If the NavPane is closed,
when they reopen their Citrix session it is back to default displaying the NavPane.  Any help on getting this removed would be greatly appreciated.
I have so far attempted to create a macro Normal.dotm and works partially, however it is not consistent as each time it appears that the modified Normal.dotm becomes overwritten with a default one.  I have also added this modified Normal.dotm to the
Default user profile locally on the server...to which it does not seem to pull.
    Update:
I am currently looking to see on how to redirect the Normal.dotm away from %appdata%\microsoft\templates to a central location and have this applied to all users either user GPO or a per machine setup....but can't find anything specifically for Word 2010
configuration.  Any help on this would also be beneficial.

Regarding the Navigation Pane.  The setting for displaying it is indeed in the Windows Registry but it is part of a binary data key and thus mere mortals like us are not able to change it. You need a macro... see this link for an example.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/bb6268ac-546b-4118-87fa-21f6fd2cecbc/word-navigation-pane-open-by-default
Regarding changing the location of Word's Normal template via GPO it can be done. See below link. However, as is pointed out in the link, the recommendation is not to do so. If the central location server is down, no one will be able to create documents.
In addition, if someone accidentally or purposely alters/corrupts the Normal template... everyone is effected.

  • Credentials for roaming profiles

    Good morning all,
Having a bit of trouble with the vibe snap in using Office 2013 and users with roaming profiles. It seems when users enter their account information that these get stored in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Credenti als. As you can see this is in the local directory of the profile which does not get uploaded on log out. This means users are having to re-enter their credentials after every new login.
Is there a workaround for this or is there a way of configuring Vibe to store the credentials in a roaming directory?
    Thanks!

  • Slow logon for roaming profiles on Server 2012 R2.

    Hey all,
We have migrated Windows Server 2008 R2 to 2012 R2. After this, roaming profiles began to take 7-8 mins to 15-16 mins to logon to the 2012 R2 RDHS. Same roaming profiles have no problems logging on other RDS servers running Server 2008 R2.
All updates are installed. All RDS related HotFixes have been applied. Server 2012 R2 only got RDSH role activated. It's a domain environment and AD role is on a physical DC. This is a mixed OS environment for clients.
Local users have no problems logging on. Roaming profiles have no problems logging back in day after the first logon - The very first logon took a long time for them.
Profiles stored on an SSD NAS device. The device doesn't support SMB3 protocol. Could this be why?
Also when we check Event Viewer, we see "Event ID 5: Kernel-General :: {Registry Hive Recovered} Registry hive (file): '\........\NTUSER.DAT' was corrupted and it has been recovered. Some data might have been lost." But again,
same profiles have no problem logging on Server 2008 R2.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and advices.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Bruce,
    >>After this, roaming profiles began to take 7-8 mins to 15-16 mins to logon to the 2012 R2 RDHS.
Before going further, I want to further confirm if this happens when the users log onto the server first time or all the time.  Besides, does this happen to all domain users logging onto the server?
    >>"Event ID 5: Kernel-General :: {Registry Hive Recovered} Registry hive (file): '\........\NTUSER.DAT' was corrupted and it has been recovered. Some data might have been lost."
For this event, we can refer to the solution provided by Justin in the following thread to tackle the issue.

  • Using colorchecker for camera profile

Created photo then used file menue, export preset, xrite.  It worked but I never got a change to select a name.  It came up as "profile". What am I missing.  Found the profiles but my camera  Cannon Rebel 4ti is not listed.  Is there an easy way to change or delete these profiles?

This may help. Don't forget to also calibrate your WB with the new profile using the gray patch next to the 100% white patch. I save this as a new Develop preset with only 'White Balance' and 'Calibration' (Camera DNG profile) checked. I found this necessary as the WB was different when using the LR WB presets.
Be careful when renaming camera profiles. Any images already using the profile will revert back to 'Adobe Standard' since it no longer sees the profile with the "old name." Try to use something descriptive like '600D CCPP Sunny.' This will help identify them if you decide to use the Adobe DNG Profile Editor for creating or modifying camera profiles.

  • Alternative to using SUNMC for hardware monitoring on Solaris 8, 9, 10

My manager is asking me if there is an alternative product available to using SUN MANAGEMENT CENTER to monitor hardware on older servers running Solaris 8, 9 & 10. We have ASR in the environment for the new servers and that will stay for at least the short term.
We have some old hardware on the account that I support and there is little likelihood that we will be moving to Solaris 10 on these older servers to use the follow-on product (name escapes me).
What else is out there for this purpose?

    IBM Tivoli
    CA UniCenter
    HP OpenView
    Good 'ol SWatch
I believe the product which the name escapes you is Ops Center???

  • Alternatives to using camera for capture

I've been lucky enough to be designated the "official" videographer for our high school basketball teams. I am cranking out anywhere between 2 and 8 videos a week, plus a few more events in between. I use IM to IDVD, burn the image, delete the projects and start over again. I use a rather expensive camera and would prefer to keep it in good shape for a few years. Between the shooting, rewinding, capturing and rewinding again (yes I do reuse my tapes several times)I am concerned about the wear and tear on my camera. What are my options here? I can find minidv player/recorders but they are over a $1000 and I'm not sure if they would be any more longlasting than a camera or if they are compatible with capturing on IM. I am leaning towards buying a more inexpensive minidv camera.
    Your thoughts?
If you know of a better place to post this question, I'm all ears.

If you want to save wear and tear on your expensive (shooting) camera, then as long as it's in good condition, and the head and transport alignment isn't out of kilter you should be able to use a cheap miniDV camcorder (with a FireWire connection) to import your tapes into iMovie.
Shoot with your expensive camcorder, and edit (..i.e; play and rewind tapes..) with a cheaper bottom-of-the-range camcorder ..after all, it's only the tape transport and playback heads which you'll need, and not the expensive optics and video-capture circuitry.
If all's aligned correctly, then any Standard Play miniDV tape should play back on any other miniDV camcorder.
CAUTION: Anything recorded at Long Play speed might NOT play back on another camcorder or deck, as tolerances (track widths) are so fine at LP speed than no manufacturer guarantees LP recordings' compatibility when played back on other equipment.

  • It is Possible to Migrate Local User Profile to Roaming Profile Using USMT?

    Dear All,
1st, I'm following guide at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/142682 to copy user profiles to another user, but the problem is the 'Copy to' button is not active (grey). I try
using 3rd party tools, still no change.
2nd, I try to transfer local profile on the same machine and different user using Windows Easy Transfer, it's work and all of data has been restore to a new user. But not all App Settings is restored, when I open Outlook 2010 and Windows
Live Mail, there's need to enter password again. That is not problem for me.
3rd, After migrate/transfer (2nd step) I want to migrate from local profile to roaming profile, but user profile setting on local profile is not copied to roaming profile, such as Email setting need to create new account but all data is
not problem, because I have already configure on ADUC and GPMC.
    My question is:
    1. How to copy or move all Application settings on AppData Local folder to roaming profile?
    2. How about USMT, it is possible to migrate user profile settings from local to roaming? if is the best tools, how to do this?
    Please, advice...
    Thanks,
    Hendra

First, I dont understand why you're using the copy profile method. I'll make the assumption that you have a domain user account that you you need it's files and settings moving to another machine.
In that scenario then there's a simple guide here:
    Migrate User Accounts
For Roaming Profiles and Redirected folders; you can follow the
Infrastructure Planning and Design (IPD) Guide for Windows User State Virtualization (USV).
It sounds like a mouthfull but it actually makes the whole process easy. There's also a video
    here.

  • Roaming Profiles using DFS? - is it possible?

    Hi,
Has anyone ever used DFS replication for roaming profiles?  Is it possible to specify a namespace for a roaming profle path?
The dilema I have is that several users work between 2 sites at the moment.  Sites are connected via VPN, but only a standard ADSL line is used due to the size of the Organisaton and costs etc.
I've already set profile size restrictions, but there can still be a lengthy delay pulling the profile and caching between sites.  I've already managed to replicate the company filestore, so data access should be significantly improved.
The problem now is logon etc.  I did think about redirection, but clients are still XP so less group policy options.
Using Server 2008 Std R2 at each site with XP client.
Really just looking for other engineers experiences / ideas for this kind of problem.  What have other people created in this situation?  I'm thinking more towards the re-direction of profile data and possible replicating that?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks.

    Hello Hozzie,
    ·         Generally speaking, using DFSR to replicate user roaming profiles isn't a good idea. This will cause some potential inconsistent issue.
Let's assume that we have two servers FileSrv1 and FileSrv2 that will host profiles. You setup DFSR to replicate profiles between the two machines.
Now let's imagine the following scenario:
    1) A user logs into their desktop, which downloads its profile from FileSrv1.
    2) The user makes changes to their profile and logs out.
    3) The changes are written back to FileSrv1
    4) DFSR sees the changes and begins replicating them to FileSrv2
    5) The user logs into their laptop, which downloads its profile from FileSrv2
    6) Since DFSR hasn't finished replicating the changes on FileSrv1 to FileSrv2, the user just receives a partially modified profile on their laptop
Even more will be confusing to the client user would be the following scenario:
    1) A user logs into their desktop, which downloads its profile from FileSrv1
    2) The user makes some changes to their profile on the desktop
    3) The user logs into their laptop, which downloads its profile from FileSrv2
    4) The user makes some changes to their profile on the laptop
    5) The user logs out of both machines. Changes are written back to both FileSrv1 and FileSrv2.
    6) DFSR begins replicating and detects conflicts. Its conflict resolution algorithm applies the last-writer wins policy
    7) The profile that ends up on FileSrv1 and FileSrv2 is combination of the changes made from both machines, but may be internally inconsistent if configuration settings are stored across multiple files.
Therefore, we don’t recommend you use DFSR to replicate Roaming profile in the case.
Hope this can be helpful for you.

    David Shen

  • 7310 - Problem with CIFS and Roaming Profiles since upgrade to 2010.Q1.0.2

We have developed a strange problem with our environment which I'm pretty sure is down to the upgrade to 2010.Q1.0.2 from 2009.Q3.4.1 on our 7310 (all the previous 2009 releases had been fine) since nothing else has changed in our environment. I suspect some changes to the underlying CIFS server causing this?
We have virtual Windows servers hosted on a VMWare VSphere cluster which are stored on the 7310 via iSCSI LUNs and also CIFS shares on the 7310 for home directories and separate CIFS shares for roaming profiles - all paths are correct in AD for each user - we also use folder redirection for XP Pro clients to force things like "Application Data", "My Documents" etc. onto the Homedir share.
What we've been seeing recently (which only started happening after the upgrade) is a lot of failed logons to the domain for users. It looks like the usual corrupted profile problem that has plagued Windows forever ...the usual messages that it cannot log the user on with a copy of their roaming profile, and that it will use a temporary one. Some folder redirections (that are initiated via Group Policy) also don't get applied. Users don't see errors when logging off from a "good" profile, and NTUSER.DAT etc. seemingly gets written correctly - the next time they log on, around half the time the users will get these errors as described below:
Event viewer logs show "cannot find the file specified" errors for NTUSER.DAT, along with "directory name is invalid" errors for some of the folder redirections.
More worrying (and what I think might be the real reason for these failures) are the "offline caching is enabled on the roaming profile share" errors. I think that the client-side caching might not be working - possibly the profiles aren't getting flushed and written correctly upon logout?
Now, unfortunately the MMC snap-in for managing shares doesn't seem to support changing the behaviour for client-side caching on the CIFS shares (as confirmed in the latest 7000-series Admin Guide on page 198).
I've been thinking about unchecking the "Enable Oplocks" box which from the CIFS side would completely stop all client-side caching I presume?
Is this likely to be the culprit here, or is there any other known behaviour that could be causing these errors? Is it also worth disabling "Cache device usage" altogether for the Profiles share itself?
Can anyone help? It's a bit of a strange problem, and something I don't want to raise with Sun on our support contract just yet, since at first glance it looks like a Windows problem, but I suspect the storage could well be to blame...

Unfortunately, this is still not working correctly...
So, it looks like it's not related to the offline caching seeing as it all works on the Q2009 despite the warnings...
Some more errors coming out of userenv.log on the affected Windows machines:
USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:230 ReconcileFile: GetFileAttributes on the source failed with error = 2
    USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:230 CopyProfileDirectoryEx: ReconcileFile failed with error = 2
    and later:
USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:245 GetShareName: WNetGetConnection initially returned error 2250
USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:245 CopyProfileDirectoryEx: Leaving with a return value of 0
USERENV(280.284) 10:07:33:245 RestoreUserProfile: CopyProfileDirectory failed. Issuing default profile
...which then forces the TEMP profiles.
All other errors linked to this look like "file not found", "invalid path" etc. when the files are present and the paths are correct.
Manually mapping drives using CIFS with UNC paths sporadically fails too now. We have a bunch of GPOs that map shares to users depending on their group memberships - these too are sporadically failing.
It certainly looks to me like it could be a CIFS problem introduced in the Q2010 release.
I'm going to raise a ticket with Sun...

  • Roaming Profile RDS + NetApp

    Hello everybody.
I need some help with a problem on my RDS 2008r2 project, which has to deal with Roaming Profile and inheritable permissions from parent folder.
We have NetApp storage and through GPO, we want to store these users roaming profiles into NetApp share.
Ok, so far the idea is good, we already use it for XenApp 6.5, and it work perfectly. But, for any reason, RDS roaming profiles are not working as we want.
So, we have a folder (on netapp share) named ProfilesRDS, where the roaming profiles are saved, and this ProfileRDS folder has 4 or 5 AD security groups.
When a user logs in, his profile is created with USER, NETAPPNAME\Administrators and System, has Full Control of the user profile. The administrators groups from parent folder are not inheritable to the profile...
Policys like "Add the administrators security group to roaming user profiles", "Do not check for user ownership of Roaming Profiles Folder" are enabled.
Does anybody ever seen these before? Anyone that can give me a help?
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

    Hi Rafael,
Thanks for your post in Windows Server Forum.
As far my research, the setting which you have applied will take affect when creating a new profile only. Profiles created before this policy settings was in place lack the entry for “Administrators.” Also check
this thread for granting permission for roaming profile. In addition
check beneath articles for more information.

  • Backup Roaming Profile Data in windows Server 2008 R2

I am using windows server 2008r2 for active directory server.
I have configure roaming profile fore an user. I have configre roaming profile path is \\ads\Profile\user4 in C Drive.
I have log in this user in my domain network pc then simply like copy or create folder or some file in desktop. Then i have log in another pc from this domain network then i am getting desktop which was copy or create folder or files.  Its working and
getting any pc in this domain environment.
Problem is like i have copy 2GB data in desktop and getting another pc for login this user but whose folder i have set for roaming profile this folder shows 0 byte.
But my question is how can i backup data for this user from my ADS Server  for roaming profile?
    Thanks & Best Regards,

    Hi,
You can use Group Policy to enforce limits to the size of roaming profiles. It seems that the size of the roaming profiles exceeded the size in the policy setting. Windows does not synchronize the user's profile to the profile server when it exceeds the policy
    enabled limit.
You could increase the size use the Limit profile size policy setting. This increase causes delays in user logons, because it takes some time for Windows to copy the information to the local computer.

  • Mavericks server roaming profiles

I Have been trying for days to set up roaming profiles on 3 iMacs connected to an iMac running mavericks server 3.1.1 and os 10.9.3. I've deleted the OD a few times now and I can't see why when I try to log on the password is never accepted. Very frustrating.

    Hi,
When you are using the same roaming profile for a Windows client and a Terminal Services client, the profile may be inconsistent or overwritten. Configuration changes made on the local Windows desktop can overwrite changes made in the Terminal Services client
desktop or vice-versa, depending on which desktop is closed last.

  • Outlook take time on roaming profile network

    Dear All,
W have a network here of almost 100 clients. All the users have roaming profiles with hot desk... The problem is when any user logs on on different machines, it takes ages to load their outlook. I need the best solution to cop out this issue becasue users
get really frustrated. We are using Outlook 2010.
    Thnaks,

    Hi zeeali,
According to your description, my understanding is that Outlook 2010 takes a loog time to load roaming profile.
Synchronizing the local and network copies would slow down Windows startup and shutdown considerably.
