Aluminium cable and Infinity

I'm not on Infinity yet, but the Infinity checker telles me I'll be due on 31st December! My question relates to the cable from the cabinet to my home. I am assuming that the fibre optic cable only goes to the cabinet. I believe (having spoken with an ex-BT engineer who was employed when my estate was being built) that the underground cabling is aluminium rather than copper and that aluminium is very poor when it comes to broadband - hence my diabolical speeds at the moment. What I would like to know is whether the aluminium cable will render the change to Infinity pointless. At the moment I get around 1.5mbps - and that only since BT upgraded the exchange. Does anyone have experience or knowledge of this?

Just as a guide. My line to the cab is aluminium (laid early 1980's). When I was having "issues" with my previous broadband, OR did some extensive testing. The loss to the cabinet was 9db, and then another 51db back to the exchange. So overall my line was around 60db loss. Add a noise margin of 15db onto this, and I was lucky to see 1 meg. The line to the cabinet was also very noisey, and so the DLM used to stick me at around 135k-160k for weeks on end, until I managed to convince someone to get it to re-train. Then I would get 1-3 megs, dropping to 1, and then back to sub 0.5megs.  I had lift and shift, etc, to no avail.
Moved to O2 LLU, and was getting a very respectful 3.5 megs with a NM of 3db (got lots of disconnects, but no DLM to stick its nose in and drop to a "stable" speed).
Now on Infinity, and I get 37.5 over ethernet (sometimes a bit more). Just great.
Using wireless (and "g" as well!), I get around 20 megs, which drops to around 15megs when everyone comes home and starts up. But, in reality, makes no difference to my internet use.
Very very pleased with the "uplift", and apart from problems which have beset the whole network over the last couple of weeks (not just BT), the speeds and stability have been wonderful. Can't fault it. Option 2, unlimited - brilliant.
Oh yes, the best bit, 10 megs upload, and I get about 9meg, is just great. If you move photos and music around (I use DropBox for sharing preliminary mixes of locally recorded music), then life is SO SO much better.
Cheers,
Rob

  • Beware Aluminium Cabling and Speedcheck Results BE...

Hi, just to let you all know and be aware of signing up on the promise of speeds based on the BT Infinity speed checker. Our village is mostly alumunium cable, not copper, and this halves the speed you will get. I cannot get out of the contract as I've been in for several weeks but:
    a. was never informed of this (I signed up by telephone - note you get better deals by telephoning too - 12 month discount of Infinity 2 at £17.25 a month);
    b. it took 3 weeks and 2 engineer visits to be informed of the cable issue;
    c. the installation engineer informed me he was getting 40/10 speeds when clearly he was not, then tried to blame a worn cat5 cable;
    d. the second engineer told me it is a known issue but retail never inform customers.
Ask before you sign up. Hope this helps someone. I will be contacting the Ombudsman Services: Communication next.

Hi, I got a short reply saying I was achieving the expected speeds when clearly I was not. I assume he hadn't read the thread. I asked again with no response. Since then the speed has crept up by rebooting once a day to almost back to where it was before the loss of the phone and broadband service.
I am going to go via the Ombudsman route to see if I can get satisfaction and some decent compensation/cessation of the contract.

  • Aluminium cable causes slow speed what's Open Reac...

    Hi
I have had Infinity for 12 months and have had speeds issues since day 1.
I now have dropped to 6MB down and have never exceeded .5MB up (not a typo 1/2 of 1 MB up)
The problem is due to Aluminium cable between my house and the FTC. BT wont replace the cable so I will never get the promised speed.
How can I get a stable service and what is the policy on these old cables as I am sure a copper connection will resolve the issues.
This weekend a BT engineer will visit my house and probably lift a few man holes and re-terminate the cables which will result in speeds of upto 15MB if I am lucky which will last for a few weeks or until heavy rain. At that point it will revert to 6MB.
    Any advise greatly received.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful comments.
Quick update - Open Reach came on Saturday and confirmed the speed was 6MB and did a test that showed a sync speed of 10MB was obtainable.
They then left it at the original Sync speed of 6MB since they said it would just degrade again.
They have raised the cable as a fault but I get the impression that the only way to get the cable replaced is if someone steals the existing one. The post code for anyone wanting Aluminum is BH24 2LG.
Does not seem much point in Open Reach investing in high speed services if the old infrastructure destroys the benefits.
Probably going to switch to Sky broadband to see if a new line service will improve the speed since it will be a different pair of wires and maybe different equipment?
    Any thoughts please.....
6MB is a very good speed, it equals to a 60mb connection. The highest you can get on Infinity is 76mb.

  • ADSL and Infinity Speed comparison. Irchester, Nor...

Having checked my number on the wholesale site, my line "currently supports estimated ADSL max Broadband line speed of 1mbps, typically line speed between 750kbps and 2.5mbps" and whoop de do I got around 770kbps when I did a line speed check tonight..... the wholesale site also kindly informs me that my line also currently supports "fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers receive downstream line speed of 40mbps and upstream line speed of 15mbps".
I am about 4km from the exchange.
Does this message mean that I can definitely get Infinity and can anyone suggest what speed am I really likely to get?
Will it be comparable to my current speed, i.e at the very slowest end of the speed scale? Which to be honest couldnt be much slower unless I typed, printed and walked the e-mail to its destination myself......
Where can I find a map of local cabinets/upgrade dates and current speeds received by people near me? If there is such a thing.....

Using the BT wholesale checker my telephone number result .-
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 26.6Mbps and upstream line speed of 11.1Mbps.
If you've input your Telephone Number and get a similar result then Infinity is available to you.
A Post Code check would only give a rough area result.
My results over wireless "n" came out as THIS. (My upload is capped due the option of Infinity I am on).
But I cannot promise you'll get as good a result....
But lets face it your checker estimate is much higher than mine so I would hope so.
And in THIS announcement  a couple of paragraphs down, there is mention of increasing FTTC speeds, but we don't know if that will be chargable or not.
Your distance from the exchange will now be irrelevant as the exchange to your local cabinet are connected by "speed of light" fibre cable.
So think of it as if your exchange has now been moved to your local green Fibre Cabinet. (Typical fibre cabinet picture HERE.)
The governing factor now is the distance your copper (hopefully and not aluminium) cable has to travel from your cabinet to your house.
This document updated monthly by Openreach giving information when exchanges are ready or coming soon/future.
But if the checker is supplying not mentioning "planned" but "currently supports" then you could order.
Scroll a bit down on this BT INFINITY site, enter your landline number and if it comes up with Infinity NOW then your good to go.
Current speed check over wireless "n".-

  • Aluminium cables in Milton Keynes

Im due to receive BT infinity in the near future and im  getting slightly concerned about that aluminium cabling in the Milton Keynes area, i was just wondering if anyone in the local area has BT infinity and have they experienced any problems!  I am in the Oldbrook area of MK1 Cheers

I think you will be served by Bradwell Abbey exchange which is a mix of FTTP & C, do you know which version your grid square has? BT class it as BT Infinity Option 3. I know over the road is FTTP which if it is you won't need to worry, the fibre will replace your aluminium all together.
You may find that you have your current WLR line is replaced and you move over to FVA & BB on a simultaneous provide so that your Openreach modem runs your phoneline and BB.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    It's do-able, but I don't think it's a great idea.
    DVI
Some users with DVI have managed to get their TV's to work with DVI-HDMI cables. DVI carries no audio, so alternative connections need to be explored to enable audio. DVI doesn't necessarily support HDCP as well as other standards used by HDMI (which may or may not be an issue)
    Analogue
There are hardware converters that will convert HDMI to various other types of output, however there are some issues with doing so that you should be aware of.
    HDCP
HDCP compliant converters will not allow you to watch HDCP protected content such as that from the iTunes Store. Non compliant converters exist but we cannot discuss them under the Terms of Use for these communities.
    Resolution and aspect ratio
I'm not aware of any converters that will scale the output from the Apple TV, any TV or projector which is used will need to be widescreen and support resolutions of 720p (Apple TV 2), 720p/1080p (Apple TV 3)

  • How to connect a MBP to a BENQ external monitor using a HDMI cable and a HDMI to mini display adapter?

Hi, I have just bought a brand new HDMI cable and HDMI to minidisplay adapter  and tried to connect my Macbook Pro up. The external display knows it is there but it is not getting any signal. I have tried on another TV and it also says no signal and I also tried using another Mac but it still didn't work.
    Can anyone help?

In some versions of Mac OS X, with the Displays pane open, holding the Option key will show the detect displays button in the lower right.
I am using OS X Mavericks. Where did the Detect Displays button go?
You can find the Detect Displays button in the Displays section of System Preferences. Once there, press and hold the Option key to see the Detect Displays button in the lower-right corner. You can click this button to manually detect another display.
Another technique is to sleep and wake your computer, which will send the detect display sequence as well.

I have a Samsung HD TV and I purchased a Mini Display port to HDMI Adapter today. For some strange reason I get no display on my HD tv. I even tried switching a few HDMI cables and nothing popped up. I made sure my computer performed all software updates, and I even tried calling Apple Support. They just told me to keep trying different hdmi cables and see if anything pops up. Does anybody know what the problem is? My HDMI cable is from "rocketfish" also my display port is too.

You may have the screen refresh rate set higher than the TV is generally able to track reliably. It may be able to get there most times, but occasionally loses sync because it is out of its nominal range.
I suggest you sit down with the manual for the TV and find out what resolutions at what refresh rates it intends to support through VGA, and make sure your screen settings are near (or below) those limits.

I am trying to hook my MacBook Pro to a Sony Bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. I have used the same setup with three other TV's, each a different brand with no problem. Any ideas?

Is the TV set to take input from the HDMI connection?
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.  Check your connections.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.

In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

I bought a new laptop and used Windows Easy Transfer cable and moved all files from one computer to another. I installed iTunes and found my iTunes music Library.  However, when I plug in my iPod it says it is already synced with another iTunes Library.
I don't see anything in Help that shows when you already have transfered all the files over.  Why would it want to erase and sync when I already have all the music folder copied over?  I didn't have an issue when I had another technician copy from one laptop to another.  Home sharing is also on but not being recognized.

I suspect you only migrated the media folder instead of the complete working library. Either review the transfer process and copy over the entire iTunes folder from your old profile's music folder or see Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • New 13" Macbook Pro trying to connect to a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 as second monitor. I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. The Macbook does not sense the second monitor (TV). Help?!

I've been a Mac since 2008, so I know my way around the system pretty well. This issue, however, has me stumped. I had an iMac until now and only now am I experiencing some difficulty with my new MacBook Pro. The model I have is the newest 13" Macbook Pro model and I'm trying to connect a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 42" HDTV as a second monitor via the Thunderbolt port.
It worked the first two times and hasn't worked since, after 10-15 attempts with different configurations, turning things on n off, restarting the mac, unplugging the cables, adapters, TV, resetting the P RAM, etc... I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. No matter what I do, the Macbook does not sense the TV as a second monitor anymore.
I took the MacBook Pro to the Apple Store, and their "genius" there had it working fine with a DVI connection to a regular monitor. The Panasonic TV I have has HDMI connections and one VGA connection which does not support HD, but no DVI option. I want an HD connection to mirror or extend my MacBook Pro screen. At the Apple Store, they didn't have a Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, so he could not try that out for me.
Anyone else have this configuration or another similar one with a Panasonic HDTV?
    Ideas? Suggestions? Anything?! Help!!
P.S. I'm running Mountain Lion, if that wasn't already obvious. Everything is up to date in my App Store as well.
    Thanks!

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.
