Aluminum 23" vs. translucent 23" Cinema Display

Is there any difference, other than cosmetics between the current cinema displays with the metal casing and the previous versions with the translucent case? I was thinking of upgrading to a 23" monitor and just think the previous version is better looking.

Agree, quality is better on older plastic one. I have the 20" and auditioned the new 20" and 23" and decided not to bother.
Try and display a 1,2,3,4,5% tint on both and you will see the plastic goes almost down to 2% the new displays struggle around 4%... very bad if you ask me.

Anyone know why? Only thing I could find was incorrect display setting but I have been running 1680x1050 since I bought the thing 3 yrs ago and have an ATI RADEON 9600 with 256mb of memory.
I should not be having this problem, correct?
    Ant help would be appreciated!
    Thanks and Happy 4th!

No, you should not be having this problem, in fact, neither should I.
It appears as though the cause is a malfunction in the displays *Backlight Inverter*. Also, (well in my situation anyway), I have noticed that the very bottom of the screen is slightly darker than the rest of the viewing area.
Short of returning the display to Apple (or an authorized Dealer etc) for repair (my warranty has expired a long while back), there is an alternative, especially for those living in the US.
If you take a look at http://www.lcdparts.net/DesktopInverter.aspx you will see the parts needed at the bottom of the page along with the price and respective model number. In my case this page http://www.lcdparts.net/DesktopInverterDetail.aspx?InverterOriginal=T65I014.00MS S sums up my problem precisely, when you read the Description under the graphic of the actual replacement part offered.
The price of $US129.99 seems OK, but with conversion rates/shipping etc, I think I will be better off getting a new screen, as finding this part in Australia is rather difficult, to say the least.
You should also be aware that this is just for the part and you are expected to be able to replace it yourself, or they will do it for a fee.
Go here http://rapidshare.com/files/127505987/A1038backlight_inverterinstallation.pdf for the pdf on how to do it yourself, or join the Members section of their site and get it from there. I hope this helps anyone else in the same situation...

  • 20" Aluminum Cinema Display Screws?

An aluminum 20" ACD will have a DVI input with a tethered cable. If you are sure the Mac Pro has a full-sized DVI output, then it should all be good. No adapter needed.

  • Cinema Display 23 aluminum and Windows 7 64

I have an Apple Cinema Display on an Alienware Auora i7 980x running Windows 7 64. I have an nVidia Quadro 4000. In the nVidia Control panel the monitor shows, but not in device manager. One of my monitors shows up in Device Manager, but not in the nVidia control panel. I tried installing the WinACD version 0.4.6 but get the mesage that the "installation was interupted"
I have two Dell monitors that show up in Device Manager, but one is missing from the nVidia control panel. Although the Apple Cinema Display does show up in the nVidia Control Panel, it is not sown in Device Manager
I have contacted nVidia, but was hoping to find out if there is a driver for the Apple Cinema Display.
    Any ideas?

    Hello again,
After speaking to an Apple Genius, it seems the solution was to update the firmware for the Cinema Display. Since I have done this, the monitor appears to behave better.

  • How to connect my Cinema Display as a second monitor

I just purchased a new 27-inch iMac, and I explained to the Apple folks that I had a 17-inch cinema display (silver clad model) that I wanted to connect, for a dual monitor set up. They told me just to get the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter, but I was surprised to realize that's not going to work.
Can anyone tell me how to do this, and what connector is actually needed? I have the big old white power brick that I bought to daisy chain my old 17 and 23 inch displays with my old configuration (Mac Pro).
Or can you not have a second monitor with an iMac?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Where and how can I buy a new AC adaptor for a 30" HD cinema display?

I bought large numbers of Apple products in Hong Kong but have since moved to a remote area of the Philippines where internation telephone calls are extremely difficult.
The AC adaptor of my 30" HD cinema display with aluminum case has been lost so I need to find out the price and order a new one.  However the Apple shop (Hong Kong) on-line has no way to ask the price or place an order for this item.  There is no on-line form no email addrees, nothing except Hong Kong phone numbers.
Can anyone please advise what I can do?  Please don't suggest going to the local service center.  I will never go back to our local service center after what they did last time.
    Thank you.

    Thank You.
I have emailed them to ask if they will deliver to Hong Kong via USPS.
I may need a video card for a MacPro so I will order that from them also.
    Thanks again

  • Can I use an Apple Cinema Display as a second monitor for my iMac?

I have a new 24" intel iMac and was wondering if I could use my old 20" Apple Cinema Display (aluminum) as a dual display. What cables do I need?

Just had a good look inside my box and nothing. Maybe it's a Apple UK thing
The back of my iMac does have a Mini DVI port so I'm gonna pop down the Apple store tomorrow morning to pick one up.
Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know if I'm successful.

  • I'm trying to connect my 23" Cinema display to my iMac, need help with connector cable.

I'm trying to connect my 23" Cinema Display monitor to my iMac. The adaptor cable I ordered came with a female, I need a male adaptor. Any ideas where I might find one? I purchased the BlueRigger Mini Displayport Male to DVI Female Adapter Cable.

I have the 23" aluminum Cinema Display. I just can't seem to find the right adaptor for the monitor femal plug on the backside. I've tried a Bluerigger but it was a female adaptor. I believe I need a male.

  • How to connect old Apple Cinema Display to new Mac Mini?

    Hello,
I'm considering replacing an old Mac Mini with the new model, but I intend to keep on using my old Apple Cinema Display 20" with it. But i'm having some trouble finding the right conversor (it seems there isn't any from Apple...)
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

If by "old" apple cinema the OP is referring to the aluminum displays of the later mac models, then yes, that's a no-brainer, the problem is that if the OP is referring to the "real" old apple cinema displays, which have a DVI-type connection with power included on the same cable, like the displays the former Mac G4 or G5 had, then he needs a ADP to DVI port, which in most cases it cost more than the actual monitor itself.. I guess the OP needs to specify what does it mean by old apple displays or throw in a link to an image..

  • How to connect Cinema Display A1081 to Mac Mini 2009

This may seem an obvious question but the problem is that I am currently abroad, having bought a Mac Mini to replace my very old PowerMac G4, so I cant check if the cable that currently connects the old machine to my Cinema Display will also fit into the new Mac Mini.
Any help or suggestions are gratefully received.

Just other users here, no replies from Apple itself.
Besides the included adapter working, there's a MDP to DVI adapter you can buy...

  • What Cable Do I Need To Connect My MacBook With a Cinema Display?

    Hi,
I have got a 23" old HD Cinema Display. It is the one with the transparent plastic around the outside. I have a 13" MacBook, Oct 2008 then discontinued, the one that looks like a MacBook Pro, and I would like to connect the laptop to the display. Which cable would I need to connect the two?
The cable coming off the cinema display has three lines on ten metal dots on the right, and a line, with two dots above and below it, on the left. On the Macbook I have got a mini dvi port.
    Thanks,

The first problem is that the 23 inch display with oval ADC connector has no power supply. You will need something like the Apple DVI-to-ADC converter, which contains the power supply to generate the 28 Volt power at up to 4 Amps needed to run the display. This will convert your display to a DVI display with a power supply "brick" in the cable. These converter/power units are readily available on the used market and have an AC power cord.
If your MacBook is an Aluminum body, it has a Mini DisplayPort. [Older models had a Mini DVI, where the center partition was folded into a C-shape.] Mini DisplayPort can be forced into "Single-Link DVD compatibility mode" with an inexpensive adapter. This solution works for DVI displays up through 1920 wide, beyond which you need the much more expensive Dual-Link converter. {If your had the Mini DVI, that is also a simple adapter.]

  • Clear enclosure 23" cinema display with DVi connector?

    Hi all,
I went to a local Mac store (Not Apple) where I was shown a supposedly 23" HD cinema display (clear enclosure) with a DVI CONNECTOR directly built in. I was under the impression that all clear enclosure versions natively came with the ADC connector and that if DVI was warranted, a converted was necessary. To my surprise, Apple apparently made two clear enclosure versions, both ADC and DVI. I've verified under the spec. area of this site. But, there were no 23" clear enclosure with DVI, except of course, the current 23 version which is the aluminum. So, was the more likely scenario that this rep. had shown me a 22 with DVI or is there really a 23 version with DVI. I was convinced at the time myself that it was a 23 clear enclosure version with a DVI connector. I saw with my own eyes that this display did not have a converter connected and it looked like the 23 as opposed to a 22. The 22 & 23 looks so similar and can be mistaken for each other. One of the ways of identifying readily is that the 22 has the power/brightness controls near the bottom right of the casing. Could someone confirm either way. Thanks!

    Hi-
I agree that the rep probably showed you a 22" DVI model. See page 8 of the 22" Cinema Display Manual for the cabling of the display.
You will see the DVI version of the Cinema Display listed in this article. The article was put out prior to the Aluminum housed ACD release.

  • Four monitor setup on 2013 mac pro using old 23" Cinema Displays

My current monitor setup on a 2009 mac pro is four monitors.  Three 23" Apple Cinema Displays (aluminum, mid 2000's) and one large Sony HDTV mounted to the wall as a fourth monitor.
I achieve this via 2 Geforce 120 video cards, each with a mini display port and a Dvi port each.
My question is, can I retain this same exact monitor setup on a new 2013 Mac pro cylinder?  If so, what adapters will be needed, and do they all plug into the thunderbolt ports?
Hearing all kinds of nightmares about multiple monitor problems with the new MP so want to be sure this will work before I drop big bucks.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the quick reply!
For the Tv I'm currently going VGA out of that to a Dvi adapter into the old Mac Pro.  The 3 Cinema Displays are all ether direct Dvi to the video card and two I have to use a Dvi to mini display port adapter.
So for the new Mac Pro, assuming I don't use the HDMI port, I would need Dvi to minidisplayport adapters for each of the 3 cinema displays and a VGA to minidisplayport for the TV?
EDIT: And the mini display ports may as well all be active I guess, and they need to plug into the usb bus for power?
    Thanks
