Aluminum bluetooth keyboard problem

I have an apple aluminum bluetooth keyboard. It is one of the older models that requires 3 batteries. It has had very little use. I am going on a trip and decided to take it and the green light comes on, but won't blink for pairing with my new MBP. I have tried numerous sets of new batteries. The light will come on when depressed, but then goes out and won't blink, so the pairing can't take place. The pairing will start, but then the light goes out right away and won't blink. It doesn't matter whether I turn it on with a short or prolonged press on the on button.
Any ideas?

No Luck. Deleted the old one. The keyboard will pair with another Mac...but hangs with this one. The computer sees it, attempts to pair with it, and then says that the pairing was unsuccessful - without even giving me a chance to enter the numbers that one normally does. It just says, "The pairing was unsuccessful. Make sure you device is in range of this computer, turned on and "discoverable." When ready, click Continue and try again."

  • Aluminum Bluetooth Keyboard - Caps Lock Issue

I've purchased the new Apple aluminum bluetooth keyboard, and I'm noticing that the caps lock key has some issues... first off, the little light that indicates the key is on/off rarely comes on. Second, the capslock key doesn't register each time it's depressed, making typing very awkward because I'm quite the proficient typer, and I use the capslock key to type all my uppercase characters, even single characters (goofy, I know), so I often type a word or two in caps before I stop myself and go back.
I've been using Apple laptops for several years now, so I'm quite used to the flat keys and I'm sure I'm depressing the key correctly as I type. I've also tested it quite thoroughly by carefully pressing it down, just to see if I'm certain, although these tests are somewhat hampered by the first issue (no light to indicate wether it's really on or not).
The keyboard is brand new (it's not even a week old), and I'm not sure if it might just be a manufacturing flaw with this particular unit or if it's software related (as there has already been one patch for this line of keyboards this week). Other then that, it runs great and feels amazing (especially being used to a laptop keyboard). It's also light as a feather! However, is anyone else experiencing any issues like this?
    Alex

New development: I've noticed my caps key (incl. light) has been working how I would describe as "as intended" for the last few hours; ever since I bumped the power key on the side of the battery tube earlier while picking up the keyboard. I'm not sure if this is the cause of my recent success, but I'll look into it.
I'm thinking more and more this is a software related issue. Perhaps Apple will look into how the various states the keyboard can be in (I'm sure there must be a few, or perhaps in relation to the state of the system) might affect the caps key. It sounds weird, I know, but things seem to be working just fine now. I'm not sure how long that will last of course; I'll post again if/when it stops working, which my guess will be tomorrow after I've let my system go to sleep for the night, but that's speculation based on the fact that my MBP has other "wake from sleep" quirks I've learned to deal with...maybe this is one of them.

  • SL can't access setup for aluminum Bluetooth keyboard

Snow Leopard can't find my bluetooth aluminum keyboard when I click "Setup Bluetooth Keyboard..." button in Keyboard portion of the System Preferences. When I go to System Prefs and try to access the settings, SL just spins the progress wheel and times out. Here's the screen shot:
    http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/6061/screenshot20090904at420.png
I've tried removing batteries, deleting the keyboard from the Bluetooth prefs and then repairing it. Still, I cannot access my keyboard prefs.
    Anyone have some ideas?

I am having a similar problem. This problem was happening in Leopard and now also in Snow Leopard. So perhaps it is a bad keyboard.
    http://screencast.com/t/OXtBOeWA7
The thing is, it actually sees the MAC address. But that is only when I first turn on the keyboard. So perhaps it is only discoverable for about 1 second because when it tries to connect to the keyboard it always fails. Even if I turn it off and then back on while it is trying to communicate. Lame.

  • IMac will not connect to my aluminum bluetooth keyboard

I have the original aluminum bt keyboard from Apple (the one that takes 3 batteries, instead of 2). It will not connect to my 24" white Intel Core 2 Duo iMac at all. I've tried everything I can think of and it's just not connecting.
The bluetooth magic trackpad connected just fine. The bt on the iMac must be working.

I am not sure the "three days" has anything to do with it. I had the same issue with my keyboard and my imac. I called apple support, did several resets, talked to the second level support to which he said your keyboard is connected to another mac. I disconnected from my other mac it worked.
Now my MacbookPro with a different keyboard has the same problem. It must be the lion and the bluetooth update ( I read there was a "speed up" on bluetooth).
The support guy also told me that there is a Lion update coming up, hopefully in a couple weeks. This is a major snafu for Apple when their own keyboards don't work with the new version of the operating system.... Oooops!!!

  • Does the Apple Aluminum Bluetooth Keyboard works in BootCamp w/ Vista?

    Hey there,
I have tried so many many times and I cannot pair them together. The pairing process itself seemed to work just fine everytime I tried. But the problem is the keyboard itself never works. In the Bluetooth devices list in Vista's bluetooth menu it does list my keyboard there but it seems to be disconnected every 5-10 seconds or something. It says...
    My keyboard name
    Passkey paired
    Connected
where the "Connected" part keep disappearing every 5-10 seconds. Even when it says connected, I tried the keyboard but it never works. Did I do something wrong?
    Cheers,
    Ton

As I installed Windows on my Mac, I was unable to use my wireless keyboard and mouse (which are the standards from Apple) when i was operating on the Windows partition. I had to call my buddy and use his keyboard and mouse, which were not wireless, and it worked fine. While in Windows, i did download Mac OS X, to make the two OS compatible, but the wireless still did not work on Windows. Is there something additional i need to do to allow my wireless keyboard and mouse to work on the Windows side of things. Please let me know if you have the answer

  • Bluetooth keyboard problems

I have the Apple wireless mouse and keyboard. The past few days the keyboard has just stopped working. When I try to check Bluetooth status in the menu bar I get the endless beachball. I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes the Bluetooth wizard will reconnect the keyboard, sometimes the keyboard is fine.
I've checked the batteries, which are fine. I've spent an hour or so going through these discussion boards and have seen similar problems but no real answer. I'm running Bluetooth Software 1.7.0f18. I'm sure upgrading to 10.4.6 might help, but right now I want to know if there is something more specific causing this. I haven't added any new Firewire devices (or anything else) in almost a year, and no new software since February.
My other question is what to do when the keyboard freezes. Is there any way to restart without pressing the power button?

    Hi
It will not be a problem to get that exchanged but do take your receipt with you.
If you have not already done so consider taking out AppleCare, it will give you warranty cover for 3 years from the original date of purchase and as you have now found out even the best computers go wrong
    Happy New Year

  • New aluminum bluetooth keyboard not working properly

Got the new aluminum keyboard and paired it with my MacBook Pro and everything went swimmingly. Love the key feel and the compact size. Updated the software to 1.2 and now I get the following behavior:
    - The keyboard pairs up fine, and the battery level shows up
    - The tab, arrow keys, delete, and tab all work fine
    - No other keys work
I've tried restarting the MacBook Pro, and that solves the problem for a couple of minutes, but then the keys become non-functional again. Anybody have any idea what might be happening?
    Tim

It appears that the problem was that I had Mouse Keys turned on in the Universal Access preferences. Turning that off allows me to use all keys now. Odd, as I've never made any changes to that preference pane. If the default is to have that turned on, perhaps Apple should make it clear that it must be turned off.

  • Bluetooth Keyboard Problem

The bluetooth wireless keyboard for my iMac G5 stopped working today. The green light on the back comes on, but the computer doesn't recognize when I type on the keyboard. I tried changing the batteries for the keyboard, but I cannot try re-registering the keyboard onto my computer because I cannot log in to my computer without the use of the keyboard. Any suggestions?

    Hi, rthomps —
Please accept a warm welcome to Apple Discussions. Sorry this was the reason...
Unfortunately, as Bluetooth: How to Set Up Your Apple Wireless Keyboard says:"Use a Wired USB Keyboard and Mouse During Setup

During the setup process, you'll need to use a USB keyboard before the Apple Wireless Keyboard can work. Keep a USB keyboard connected to the computer until you've completed setting up the Apple Wireless Keyboard. After setup is complete, you can disconnect the USB keyboard."The Apple KnowledgeBase article, "iMac G5 internal Bluetooth module shows that it's 'Not Available' suggests temporary interference from USB devices as a potential cause of what you're experiencing. Try disconnecting any that may be connected. But my guess is that a restart would be required after following all of the troubleshooting steps suggested there — and you're trying to avoid that...
I've been trying to conjure a more creative alternative for you, but I'm afraid that borrowing a USB keyboard is the best that comes to mind— assuming you don't have access to an "old" one that still works. I'd like to suggest using Input menu »» keyboard viewer as a means to "input" the login data via mouse — but I don't think you have access to this app yet at that point in the "boot process." I'll try to test this when I can — as well as try to think of alternatives.
    Hmm...
    Good luck!
    Regards,
    Dean
Of course, you could also disconnect other peripherals and do a normal restart, hoping that would resolve the issue. I realize why you don't want to do this — but you're "out of commision" for the time being anyway...(?)

  • How do you factory reset the aluminum bluetooth keyboard?

When I got my new BT keyboard, I set it up on my macbook just to test it out. But its final use was with the mac mini in my living room.
I deleted the pairing from my macbook and paired it with my mini. All was working ok until a few days ago, when the keyboard light started flashing for no reason when in use, and my macbook shows that the keyboard is trying to pair with it.
Is there a way to factory reset the keyboard, so it doesn't remember any previous pairings? I know this is possible with other bluetooth devices, I just can't find how to do it with this apple keyboard.

    Hello:
Try trashing the preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restarting.

  • Help - bluetooth keyboard problem

Certain letters won't work on this keyboard.
Capital "r" and Capital "v" both don't work.
    Any ideas?

Already did that.  Plugged in a USB keyboard and it worked fine.
So I guess its off to the Apple Store for a replacement.

  • Aluminum bluetooth keyboard

I have one as backup keyboard in my travel bag. Lately I noticed that the three AA batteries were draining even though the MBPro is being used on a desktop with a USB keyboard attached (and an external monitor for extended Desktop). I thought the BT keyboard powers down when not in use for a period of time.
As an experiment, I pressed and held the power on button (right side cap with power switch symbol) for about ten seconds. Initially the tiny green LED came on and then it went out. I checked battery level in System Prefs/Keyboard/... and the green 'AA' bars were gone! Does that mean that I actually turned off the power? (Don't have manual and not sure if the manual would tell me that) So, HELP?

You should have seen it on your way to this forum.

  • Problem pairing bluetooth keyboard?

I feel ridiculous posting this because it's essentially publicizing my own stupdity, but I noticed a lot of other people having the same problem I had.
I had been using my aluminum bluetooth keyboard, it was working great. Then it stopped working-- I tried to re-pair it (changed batteries, reset everything, all the obvious & not so obvious solutions) but to no avail. Sometimes the keyboard name would show up in the pairing window, sometimes it wouldn't. Even if it did show up, if I clicked on it it still would never get me to the passkey phase.
SOLUTION: Apparently the keyboard was paired the entire time with another iBook I have in my office that acts as a file server. We'd set it up with that computer once a long while ago, and apparently they still remembered each other & remained friends. And made sure my Macbook couldn't join their little group.
Anyway, I feel really stupid. But I bet there's at least one other person out there who's having this problem for the same reason.
Make sure your keyboard is divorced from all previous partners before you try to set it up with a new one! They don't like adulterers...

    Hi schrysco-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
Don't be so hard on yourself. This is how we all have learned much of what we share.
It is a good thing to know and very cool of you to share!

  • Trick for Pairing Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse With Windows 7 in BC 3.1

    My Mac:
    Mid-2007 iMac 20", 2.4 GHz; OS X 10.6.2; Windows 7 Home; Boot Camp 3.1
    My Problem:
No matter what I tried, including all kinds of tips and tricks found in this forum and elsewhere on the web, I could not get my Apple aluminum bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth Mighty Mouse to pair in Windows 7. Windows 7's bluetooth setup panel would see them, from time to time, but never connected.
The same pair connected quite easily with Snow Leopard, and the keyboard connected before I installed BC 3.1 in Win 7 (never did get the MM to connect in Win 7 with BC 3.0). But with BC 3.1 in Win 7, it was no dice for either one until I made an accidental discovery.
While prepping another Apple bluetooth aluminum keyboard for my wife's Mac Mini, it was seen by my iMac's Win 7, which wanted to pair with it.
Aha! A Big Clue! The Win 7 BC 3.1 generic bluetooth drivers wanted to pair with an aluminum keyboard that wasn't already paired with the iMac. So, I booted back into Snow Leopard, connected a USB mouse and keyboard, renamed the bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and then deleted them. I rebooted back into Win 7, then easily set up both renamed mouse and keyboard which paired quickly with Windows.
Note that I first tried deleting them from the Snow Leopard side first, but Win 7 still wouldn't pair with them. That's when I went back to Snow Leopard and renamed them but didn't pair them with the iMac until it was booted into Win 7.
Finally, I rebooted back into Snow Leopard and paired the keyboard and mouse with OS X. Done.
Hope this trick/tip/hint helps someone else with keyboard and mouse bluetooth pairing problems.

You're welcome. My discovery was quite accidental, but that's often how things happen ... if you're paying attention and are looking for clues.
Sorry you had to trial and error before you succeeded, but as you've probably found, it is necessary to rename the bluetooth devices first, then delete them from OS X.
I don't understand why this trick was necessary, or even what caused it to happen. I've got 6 Win 7 installations via Boot Camp on 6 Intel Macs (2 white MacBooks, 1 Unibody MacBook, a Core Duo Mac Mini, a 27" iMac and the 20" 2.4 Mid-2007 iMac). All were running 10.6.2 and Win 7 (aren't Family Packs wonderful?) via Boot Camp 3.0 more or less without problems, except as noted in my first post.
Only the 20" iMac had problems after the Boot Camp 3.1. Not only did I have a devil of a time pairing the keyboard and mouse, but I also lost the Win 7 activation on the iMac 20" and the OS X partition started showing up as "EFI Boot". All happened right after I updated Boot Camp 3.0 to 3.1 via download from Apple while running Win 7.
I've heard reports of other Mac users discovering Boot Camp had done a FUBAR job on their machines, but this is my first experience. My guess is that there's some dialogue going on between 10.6, Win 7 and Boot Camp that shouldn't be happening. What I really don't understand is why my other 5 Macs didn't have any problems at all with the Boot Camp upgrade to 3.1. Let's hope the Apple Boot Camp team can reverse engineer my discovery and improve the next version of BC.

  • Bluetooth keyboard glitches

I purchased an Apple bluetooth keyboard a week or ro back and have been using it with no problems until yesterday, when I get a message that the computer could not locate the keyboard. I swapped out batteries but no dice. Same thing today. So I connected my standard keyboard to do some work, and when I accidentally touched a key on the wireless keyboard I got tones, now it is working again! Any idea what's going on?

same problem here. having the issue with a white and aluminum bluetooth keyboard. it's been an issue for a couple years now and there never seems to be any solution. i've even tried a bluetooth dongle as well as the built in bluetooth on my G5...so sick of this...

  • Apple bluetooth keyboard not found

    MacBook Pro
    Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013
Processor  2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
since yesterday the external bluetooth APPLE keyboard cannot be found.
I use both a Apple bluetooth mouse and an Apple bluetooth keyboard. The mouse continues to work just fine, but the keyboard just stopped working and my computer cannot find it as a bluetooth device. I didn't run any system updates at all- the bluetooth keyboard just stopped working and then I couldn't find it- I get the message "no keyboard found." And yes, the batteries are installed correctly. And yes, I have turned the keyboard on.
This is the control panel I stare at for a long time and nothing happens:
I've read all the available troubleshooting advice from Apple, which is mostly a run down of how to put batteries in the **** thing and run the Bluetooth control panel :-/
    WTH?!

I found a fix for this and it does work. It's so simple I have a hard time understanding why Apple doesn't promote this extremely helpful and easy solution to the bluetooth keyboard problems (I hope you have as good luck with the fix as I had.)
