Aluminum iMac hang...of a sort

OK, so I was in the middle of a double pass (turbo 1st pss) encode in HandBrake, running iTunes and Safari with a dial-up connection (stupidly) in the background when there was some kind of graphical hang. It's hard to describe as I'm a new mac user for 2 weeks. But as I hovered over items in the dock it showed the program name in a black box, when i hovered over the min & max app buttons it showed the relevant icons but if I clicked anything nothing happened. I managed to cut off the connection by pulling out the USB modem. Tried to force quit, eventually with the right butons but couldn't move the dialog box. Couldn't turn off the mac by pressing the back button, and eventually turned it off at the mains. When I turned it on again, the login box appearred but I couldn't click any users.
Any ideas?

Still haven't gotten past the log in screen. Woke it from sleep and clicked on a user account, got the spinning ball and one of the accounts highlighted and slowly made the animated transition it usually does, but got stuck. When i hover over accounts it still shows information such as short names but still cant click. Restarted but still no luck. Could it be a RAM problem?, I moved the iMac today but only a few inches!?
Any help appreciated.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter doesn't fit my aluminum iMac

I previously had a 17" white iMac (pre-Intel) machine, and about 6 months ago I bought the mini-DVI to video adapter so I could connect it to my television. Worked like a charm. But I recently bought a new aluminum iMac, and the adaptor doesn't fit into the mini-DVI port in the back of the machine. It appears the adaptor and port are both male ends.
Has the port changed on the aluminum iMacs? The product description for the adaptor on Apple's website says it works with iMac (Intel Core Duo). Isn't the aluminum iMac an Intel Core Duo? I can't figure out why it doesn't fit and which cable I'm supposed to be using instead.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Hi Paul

  • HT1148 Installed Mountain Lion - Now my IMAC hangs in a short loop (1 sec) at least once every other day.

Updated my IMAC from Lion to Mountain Lion. Processor 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 Mag 1067 MHz DDR3. Now (usually when I am running two software items) my IMAC hangs up about once a day or so. It seems like a short 1 sec repeat. At that point the only way to stop it is to shut down using the main power button. Is anyone else having this problem? I never had a problem until I upgraded. I'm 99% sure it must be in the operating system. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Has Apple found this glitch in Mountain Lion and will they be coming out with a fix?

I was having a similar issue, my 27" iMac would lose the Internet connection, but not the wifi, later I'd find that the machine had restarted giving me a notice that there'd been a kernel panic. It was happening persistently after upgrading to Mountain Lion.
I used CCleaner to clear caches and now two days later I've had no problems.
I'm relieved that I didn't have to resort to more complex solutions.

  • 20 inch Aluminum iMac crashes after installing Mac OS X Combo Update 10.5.6

I have a school lab with 22 of the new 20 inch Aluminum iMacs. They all have been having a problem with crashing after someone logs onto my network server, which is still running the 10.4 Tiger version of the Apple server. They run fine if you boot up and log on as a local user, and they seem to run fine when you boot up and log on to with a server account, but when you log off from the server, about five seconds later while the aurora screen is still showing, they crash and give you the Apple version of the "blue screen of death."
I was told that the fix was to download the combo update separately from the Apple website and use that to reinstall and update the operating system.
I downloaded and tried installing with a 10.5.6.dmg file and a 10.5.6.dmg.smi file, but they both crashed.
Where can I find the "fixed" version of this update or is there some other fix?
I have tested this on 9 or 10 different systems.
The first file was MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg, which is a disk image file that is 668.8 MB or 684,774 KB.
I looked in the discussion groups on the Apple web site and found some discussions for problems that seemed similar to, but not quite the same as my own. They led me to a file MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg.smi, which a self mounting image file that is also 668.8 MB. I tried it and got the same result.
I can install my dvd, which gives me 10.5.1, which will log off and reboot correctly.
I can then install several miscellaneous upgrades:
    Pro Apps Update 2006-02 V1.0
    AirPort Utility V5.3.2
    Remote Desktop Client V3.2.2
    QuickTime V7.6
    iTunes V8.0.2
    and also
    Front Row V2.1.6
The system will then log onto the network, log off and reboot correctly.
But, when I install the 10.5.6 combo update from any of my sources, it boots and logs on fine. But, if I log onto the network, it crashes when I log off.
Where do I go from here?
    Thanks for your help.

Have you tried starting up with your install disk and doing a disk repair?
Put the install disk that came with the Mac in the DVD/CD drive and restart holding down the 'C' key. You can take your finger off once you hear it making noises from the DVD/CD drive. You'll be presented with a screen where you choose your language. At the next screen on the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility you then select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If it makes any changes click on 'repair disk' again and repeat the process until you get a clean pass. Once done select restart from the Apple menu and hopefully the Mac will boot normally.

  • IMac hanging caused by Safari (I think)

Have been having problems with my iMac hanging which I think is caused by Safari.
Safari (5.1.7 )will be working OK and then hang with the spinning wheel. Am then unable to quit and finder hangs in turn and I end up doing a restart with the power button.
Have 1 external hard drive attached which is partitioned for Time Machine backup and iTunes library.
In attemt to address problem I have previously erased my iMac and reinstalled all software (from new rather than from Time Machine backup) and then reinstalled user files (but not application library files in case any of these were corrupted.
Problem is common to all users.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS upgrade for 24" aluminum iMac -- can it be done?

I have a one-release-previous 24" aluminum iMac (bought about 2 months before the newest one was released). I play a lot of World of Warcraft, and would love to upgrade the video card to the new NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS that works in the current 24" iMac.
Is there a way to do this at all? Apple solution, third-party solution, anything? I've heard rumors, but can't find out anything for sure.
    All help appreciated.

Yes, I think it's technically possible, but you'd have to purchase the stock part from an Apple specialist (a corporate store probably wont do it) and have them install it. Expect to pay $300+ for the part alone. Even then, there's no real guarantee that it will work, even though they do indeed use the same form factor. There may be power/thermal issues.

  • ** Transferring from External FW LaCie to new Aluminum iMac **

Is it possible to transfer a CCC external FW HD to a new Intel Aluminum iMac? What I am trying to do is transfer my entire HD to my new iMac but its more economical for me to sell my G5 in New York and buy my iMac in Portland, OR + save taxes. If I back up my internal 250GB HD from my PowerMac G5 via CCC to external LaCie (FW400), can I copy onto a brand new iMac from the external or do I HAVE to go from machine to machine?
Thanks to anyone who can answer -
    Cheers -
    Chad

    Hi Chad.
If your "CCC" means a "carbon copy clone" of your previous mac system, then the answer is a NO.
To put it simply, the (OS) systems run inside a G5 and an Intel Mac *is entirely different*, they do not mix.
So let's say you have previously clone/copy from a G5 mac, the most you could do is to (re)copy/clone back to a "same system" G5, and *not to an Intel*. Same as an Intel, you do not copy or clone its entirety to a G5. The result will cause the upmost unstability to your OS system that may result in crashes etc.
The only files you can manually copy over to your new Intel mac are your data files, e.g. your photos, music, your email data, preference files etc.
Anyway, you would have to install all your application from the ground up in your new Intel mac, you should upgrade them to the Universal versions. And if you use a lot of third-party utilities and shareware, same thing, download the latest version, which should be of Universal versions and install them fresh into your Intel mac.
Search more in this forum with keywords like "migration" to get a better and more in-depth understanding of migrating from a G5 to an Intel Mac.
    Cheers

  • Display To Match aluminum iMac

Hi there, my first post on here
I have a 24" aluminum iMac, i would like to have a second display. I would like to find a monitor that looks just like the iMac. Does anyone know of one that exists please?
Failing that i will use a cinema display.
    Thanks for you time
    Z

Your iMac has a Mini-DVI port at the back to connect a second monitor.
Depending upon which Display you settle on you will need either a *Mini-DVI to DVI adaptor* or a *Mini-DVI to VGA adaptor* -
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/macaccessories/cables?mco=MTI2MjY
Any monitor you get will come with its own signal cable. The adaptor fits between the iMac and the Display's signal cable (i.e. iMac - adaptor - signal cable - display).
When you connect it all up and boot up the iMac, the second display will be detected automatically. You then need to go into +System Preferences/Displays+ where you will find a new option has appeared called 'Arrangement'. Open 'Arrangement' to -
    a) *deselect 'Mirror'* if you want an +extended desktop+ (unlikely you will want the same display on both screens unless you do a lot of presentations), and
    b) drag the diagram representing your second display to a position in relation to your iMac's own screen to match the actual physical position of your second display. (my second display is to the right of my iMac so the blue box representing my second display needed to be to the right of the iMac box).
    A piece of cake.
    Hope this helps
PS. My second screen is a different aspect ratio to the iMac display so, in Arrangment, it was easy to tell which blue rectangle represented which screen. If your new screen has the same aspect ration as your iMac screen they will look the same. I suspect the blue rectangle that represents your new second display will initially be the right hand one (just guessing though). You will soon work out which is which however.
PPS. Here's a suggestion (or three) for a display -

  • 24" Aluminum iMac Slow with Lion

I have a 24" Aluminum iMac - 2.8Ghz, 6GB RAM, 500GB HD... its a Spring 2008 iMac... SL was getting slow and we upgraded to Lion. The becahball comes on very frequently and takes anywhere from a minute to <insert time> to go away... i repair my permissions all the time, my SMART status says verified, i have used Onyx and nothng makes it better for good... once i repair permissions or us Onyx, it gets better for a little bit, but then back to what is now normal on our mac...
    any ideas? any sugesstions?

My iMac is a mid-2007 20" 2.4ghz Core2Duo with 4gb of RAM. Your machine is better than mine. Lion will run very nicely on yours.
If you upgraded to Lion within the last few hours or a day or so, your Spotlight index is being rebuilt. Until it's done, everything will feel slow and even kind of... jerky because the CPU is being heavily used by that process. Let it finish.
In my case, even once that was done, for the next several days things felt slow and not very responsive. But after a few days, things went back to normal. This was not just my subjective experience - I still have Snow Leopard on another partition so it's easy for me to reboot to reset my expectations. I have a feeling that Lion does something in the background after an upgrade from Snow Leopard, building a Versions database or something, that bogs down the CPU until it's done - and it take a long time to get done. So have patience, give it at least a week.
Of course, repairing permissions, rotating your log files, and clearing your caches isn't going to hurt. But I recommend patience. Others have reported the same experience I described.

  • Speakers that look very nice with aluminum iMac?

I'm looking to purchase speakers for my iMac and I haven't found any that look great and also get good reviews. I'm willing to spend up to about $200 CDN. I have the aluminum iMac. I will be using the speakers mostly to watch TV/video so I don't need it to achieve great bass and such.
    Any ideas?

The Apple Stores sells some nice ones.

  • Aluminum iMac USB port dead?

    Hello,
I think one of the USB ports on my Aluminum iMac (2.0 GHz) has stopped working. When I plug in my iPod into this particular port it no longer recognizes the iPod, however when I move the iPod to another port it is recognized. The port worked fine last week. I've tried other things in this port (e.g. USB hard drive), and it's the same thing.
Could this still be a software issue, or is this pretty much a hardware problem?
Is there any other troubleshooting I can do before calling Apple?
    Thanks for any help.

Hm thanks for the idea den.thed
So how do I then see that something is slowing everything down?
    Here is my tree
    http://img408.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture28et1.png
What I find mostly strange is that apparently there are 2 "USB BUss" which are not being used.
No idea where those are sitting, because all my 3 USB Plugs in the back of the iMac are used up.
Maybe they are 2 free ones in my Mac?
Then what also suprises me it that there is another USB Hub in my USB Hub?
I only have one USB hub, that hub as oyu can see has 2 leaves.
One an external harddrive, the other leaf is a USB Hub with the iPod and another external harddrive.
And as mentioned above I don't know where to look now for the thing that is slowing everything down.
    How do I recognize that?
    Thanks a lot

  • Aluminum iMac has poor Airport throughput

    Hi,
I am wirelessly connected at 54Mbs. I'm on a 10Mb/sec connection at the WAN. My wife's first gen Intel iMac can max out the connection but I can only get 1/3 of that speed. I have tried three different routers and have gone so far as to place them directly next to the new iMac with no change. I am beginning to think there may be a software driver issue limiting the throughput on this machine. I'm wondering if other folks are having this issue with their aluminum iMacs?

Karl, Welcome to the discussion area!
Check the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card to ensure that the antenna wire is properly installed. It can take more force than expected to get it installed correctly. It should look like this:
