Aluminum Keyboard, Volume in Function Keys

OK, I'm used to the plastic keyboards I have gotten so used to. Now they moved everything around (F10=Volume, etc.) But I need all of the F~ keys functionality (F1-F12) for Photoshop and Quark, but they're overridden by the new F~ keys. When I turn it off in Keyboard Prefs, everything is back to normal, but there are no volume keys. I need need need these. Any suggestions? I'd even be happy to have the new keyboard layout if I could use the F~ keys for the apps only.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you check the 'Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys' in the keyboard tab of the keyboard & Mouse preference pane, you can still get at all the Apple functions, including volume adjustments, by holding the 'fn' key down and pressing the appropriate F key.
Does that do what you need?

  • Mac Aluminum keyboard VOLUME KEYS not remapping

So I bought a new full size aluminum keyboard from apple. Totally great design, except that the volume keys are perplexing me. Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has moved the volume keys to F10, F11 and F12, instead of above the keypad where they used to be.
There's apparently no way I can figure out how to move these volume keys back to the old places which are easier to use.
But even if they couldn't move, the big problem I'm having is when I use Final Cut Pro. I map the function keys F1 through F9. However, I CANNOT map any of these keys unless I check the keyboard control panel box to use the function keys as "standard function keys". This is great except that when I check this, I can no longer adjust the volume with the volume keys without holding down the "FN" key. I adjust the volume a LOT while working with video. So holding the FN key each time to adjust or mute the volume is VERY VERY ANNOYING.
So here's the question, is there a solution to this or are the Apple Engineers giving their users the middle finger? I've called Apple and they have no answers. Awesome.
    Thanks,
    Frustrated

I had another unrelated keyboard problem that gave me a tiny bit of information.
(QPI would not connect to keyboard on start and restart, Apple updated the SMC to fix this problem but only on the new Ash Can Mac Pros, older Mac Pros are simply out of luck)
In this process I was shipped a replacement keyboard for free as a troubleshooting test.
I was sent the wrong keyboard as luck would have it.
In this case the wrong keyboard was the "A" model and my Mac Pro uses the "B" model.
The tiny bit of information I received is that Apple defines the "A" model as "Keyboard, Extended, Wired (2007)" and the "B" model as "Keyboard, Extended, Wired (2011)".
    This can be helpful.
You can contact Apple and request the 2007 model as a replacement part.... OR.... use the serial number from an older Mac and request a replacement keyboard.
This will allow you to purchase a spare "A" model. ($50-$60)
(it also helps to know the model number of the keyboard but not much because Apple does not seem to have that as a reference)
How long the 2007 model will be available requires a crystal ball but we can bet that it won't be around forever.
The writing is on the wall.
    DID YOU KNOW?
You can no longer purchase a compatible Apple Monitor for ANY Mac Pro previous to 2013.
Since the new model keyboard is incompatible (or nearly) with older machines and there is no Apple monitor compatible with older machines, the writing on the wall says.... you MUST purchase a new Mac if ANY peripheral fails.
(management calls this.... "doing good business")
    To answer your question.
If a peripheral fails and your computer is still fully functional, you are out of luck IF.... you did not buy compatible spares when they were available.
I certainly did. (I bought both original keyboard and aluminum "A" model spares as well as three 27" DisplayPort monitors.... Displayport monitors work with Thunderbolt machines -  Thunderbolt monitors do Not work with DisplayPort machines.... its One-Way Street)

  • Wired aluminum keyboard, iMac, Vol & brightness keys don't work

iMac5,1 with intel core 2 duo and a 2.16 GHz processor running leopard (10.5.8) with the wired aluminum keyboard; I cannot get the volume keys to work properly. I have tried the settings in system preferences under the keyboard option the only one to select is "use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" and it does not matter if the box is checked or not the volume keys do not work (this applies to the brightness keys as well, they do not work). I have made sure the software update was done for the keyboard (2.0 update).
    Any other suggestions?

Did you recently buy this keyboard? Sometime this year, that board's specs changed from needing an OS min of 10.4.11 to requiring 10.6.8. The new board's model number is the same but the F4 key has six small squares instead of the Dashboard icon, and the F7 through F9 keys have typical DVD player control icons.

  • Aluminum Keyboard Volume Controls for iTunes?

    Hi,
is it possible to use the Volume Controls from the Aluminum Keyboard for iTunes?
I use the Digital output for Audio on my Macs. So using this Key for iTunes would be the best usage for me.
    Thanks!

You are aware if you use the Digital output (Optical, Fiber cable), like in my case the Volume keys don't have no function anymore.
So if there is a trick to use this Keys for iTunes (when using the Digital output) that would rock the Banana house full of Squirrels!

  • How do you get the Apple Wireless Keyboard to accept function keys?

I use the Apple Wireless Keyboard with my iPad2 and I use the VPN to connect to my work-related software which requires that I use some of the function keys as actual F1, F2, F3,...etc.  When I hit F2, the iPad2 responds with the Screen Brighter action.  How do I get the keyboard input to just be F2?  Thanks!

Thanks. But I tried that and nothing happens.  I've looked though all the System Preferences sections and can't find anything on this.

My function keys are lockd into the mode where when I push any of them they are already hot keys.  They are not operating as F1, F2 etc.

If I press the Function key beside the ctrl key then press F1 it works properly otherwise it is full time as hot keys.

    Hi there @joy2015,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that your function keys are not working properly. I am happy to help with this.
I would recommend screening your system for malware, viruses, and other malicious software as a starting point. Then if you find nothing you can try doing a system restore, to a point before you first noticed the issue.
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7)
If that does not help, then try working through this page, and let me know what happens.

  • Function keys no longer working with a new keyboard...

I got a new keyboard and my function keys no longer work with it.  I am used to have them used in the standard format, i.e. F10-F12 control the voume, etc.  I have the "Use all f1,f2, etc." button clicked.  I have also tried restarting my computer.  Any thoughts?

Try doing a SMC reset and PRAM reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Function keys do not work on new wireless keyboard

Hello....my good friend just bought a new iMac G5 2.1 spotlight model computer and has had troubles with his new wireless keyboard in that all 16 function keys do not work at all. Got any ideas or is it just a defective keyboard? He bought this at my recommendation so i am trying to make it all work smoothly for him. Would appreciate a quick response as he has now had this mac for 2 weeks and we cannot figure out the problem. Thanks in advance for any and all help

I have no issues using the Apple BT keyboard. All function keys that apply to the iPad work correctly; display brightness, iPod app control, etc.
Use the most recent version of iOS and also iTunes on your computer. Try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons together for 10+ seconds, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo.
If that  does not work, then restore the iPad to it factory settings.

  • Where is HELP key on new Aluminum Keyboard?

Instructions for Boot Camp tells me to use the HELP key for the INSERT command in Windows. The aluminum keyboard has no HELP key. Where is the HELP key the aluminum keyboard??

I am having the same issue but only when I run windows XP - I really would like to know how to avoid this. it seems that after about 5 mins. of using the bluetooth keyboard in XP a key just randomly starts repeating until i turn off the computer - I was not able to get it to stop any other way. (it has nothing to do with range as I am 6" from the MBP at all times)

  • New Wireless Keyboard Function Keys Not Working

I recently got an Apple Wireless keyboard- the newest one, with only 2 batteries. I connected it to my MacBook Pro (10.5.8) just fine, and everything seemed to have been working. But the function keys don't work for their functions (F7 as previous, F8 as play, etc.). I've tried changing the settings, manually mapping shortcuts, and reinstalling the keyboard, but nothing worked, I installed all the updates, including the Magic Mouse update, but the function keys still don't work properly. The system recognizes them, but I can't map shortcuts to them, nor do the built-in shortcuts work.

You can download the software update even if you don't have a wireless mouse. Go to the apple site then "downloads" and look along the left columns for "top apple downloads" which should open a list. As of tonight, look for #11 Apple wireless mouse download. Download that and it should fix your wireless keyboard and the function keys. As mentioned in my earlier response, be sure under System Preferences and Keyboard icon that the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys...." box is unchecked.
The above should take care of the problem even though you do not have a wireless mouse.

  • Aluminum Keyboard Arrow Keys don't work in Excel?

My new Power Mac G5 came with a USB aluminum keyboard. The arrow keys no longer work with Excel as they used to (they move the window rather than the selection). Is there a fix for this?

  • How to change the Function Keys functionality?

Hello everyone I'm new here :)
I have a stupid big problem which is whenever I try to click the function keys in Programs, Games, etc.. it doesn't work for that program or game it just does what's on them!
For an example when I click on F10 or F9 it changes the volume, and when I click on F2 and F3 they change the brightness of the screen!!! And F5 doesnt refresh!!! Thats it they do nothing else at all, how can I change that to their old original ways like in Windows Vista and XP!!!
I'm not sure if the problem is with Windows or Toshiba Laptop, I have a Toshiba Satellite Windows 8.
Pleaaaaaaaaase someone help! This is urgent.

You can change it to work in standard mode.
To do this open Toshiba desktop Assist > System settings > Keyboard and change Function keys mode to Standard F1-F12 mode.
    After restart check it again.

  • Number Lock (Num lock) on new Aluminum Keyboards

Anyone know how to enable Number Lock on the new aluminum keyboards? This is usually not an issue with Macs (as by default num-lock is assumed on), but I use remote desktop to control a Windows server and I can not use my number pad because you would normally need to engage num lock to be able to do this on Windows.
On my old Apple keyboard there was an actual Num Lock button (shared function with the Clear button).
    Any ideas?
    hank you.

Same here, have you figured out a solution?
The iMac aluminum keyboard has no designated key, and the Leopard solutions do not work.

  • Function keys & shortcut keys in ADF

    Hello All,
I am new to adf i am trying to enable keyboard shortcuts and functions keys like (f1= help etc) in adf. Can anyone help me in this regards.
Also Just like Oracle forms having function keys (f1,f2,f3 etc for commit, clear, submit) I am having a jspx page and i want to enable those shortcuts in that page. How to achieve it?
    Please Help.
    Thanks

    Thanks a lot,
I have checked those links before but that is not exactly what I am looking for. I am searching in context with Oracle forms as in oracle forms you have commit on F2 or clear all on F3(say), I want to implement those in ADF. I am having a jspx page in which i have added some input texts and submit button now i want to implement a function key which will (clear all) the data from the input field in runtime. or any other function key which will invoke the submit button and commit the request.
    Thanks

  • Function keys F11 and higher not working as expected

Since I installed Leopard, my F11 through F15 keys act strange, the rest works OK. I use an external MS Comfort Curve keyboard with v6.2.1 (latest) of the Intellitype keyboard driver. I have switched off all keyboard shortcuts for function keys. I have set the System Preference to use the function keys as regular Function keys. Now the F11 is dead, the F12 is the eject, F13 through F15 are dead too. Switching the preference on or off only affects the F1 through F10 keys. There's no change for the F11 through F15 keys.
When I switch to Parallels 3 with Windows XP, the F11-key acts the same as the PrtScn (which is F13) key, the F12 key does nothing, F14 (ScrLk) and F15 (Pause/Break) are dead.
This IS annoying since I work on AS400 machines where you really need F11 and F12 + F23 (shift-F11) and F24 (shift-F12). Under Tiger, I did not have this problem - all settings worked as expected.

Software updates of all concerned programs ans OS's have resolved the issue.
