Aluminum Macbook 2.4ghz 2GB Ram Extremely HOT, Slow and Freezing constantly

I bought my computer in February. I have 40GB free and suddenly it's started getting so hot, I can't even touch it. Even on a hard surface it gets so hot that it freezes. Additionally, even after restarting it when it's completely cool, it is extreeeeeeeeemely slow. I'm amazed I'm even able to post anything on this website. Multi-tasking is unthinkable at this point. If I have one application open, I most definitely can not have another open with the computer functioning. Any ideas as to what is going on? It's very frustrating as I work on the computer and I'm not ok with a $1500+ investment quitting on me in only 10 months. Running OSX 10.5.8 Leopard. Thanks everyone!

Hi, Jennn
there might be different reasons, but most likely is that there is a process running in the background which takes your CPU time, which then heats the processor.
Please, quit all applications, then start "Activity Monitor" (in Applications->Utilities). You get a table with all processes. Make sure that you have in the selection window just above the table "All Processes". Then click on the column header "CPU" such that the highest CPU-users are at the top. This should show you if there is a process taking too much cpu time.
(it is quite probable that this is a printer process. do you have a wireless printer connected to you Macbook ??)
You can then "force-quit" the process in question.
Another possible candidate for slow-downs is memory swapping: when the RAM is insufficient, the system uses the disk as additional memory. You can see this as "Virtual Memory" in the same table of the Activity Monitor. Which applications use the most VM??
In any case, i am 100 % confident that your nice little MB is worth the 1500 $, and will work wonderfully over a few hours when we have spotted the problem...
Please, report back!
Thomas

  • Xcode/eclipse C++ on 11" MacBook Air with 2GB RAM, OS X Lion and 64GB SSD?

Hey, I'm planning on getting a 11" MacBook air with a 2GB RAM, 64GB HDD and OS X Lion. I am also going to get a 500GB external HDD with it and I would just like to know if it would be good to run Xcode or eclipse on it so I can code C++? Please note that I will install Xcode/eclipse to the external HDD If that affects the performance? Thanks.

I have a MacBook Pro running Lion. I have both XCode and Eclipse. It should work fine.

You may wish to read about maintenance and upkeep of the OS X, plus other
information, across several topics in this site with topics divided into Guides:
    •Tech Guides - TheSafeMac:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/
Sometimes, items may have been inadvertently downloaded by accident or due
to poor advisement, and of those some can be a cause of slowness in Mac OS X.
Also, the use of scanning antivirus software can be a cause of slow and disruptive
system issues; since antivirus for the most part is not effective due to the nature of
the Mac OS X and the inability of an AV application to have records of unknown, &
unsubstantiated or rumored issues in the wild, since few or none are known to exist.
The note in the etrecheck report of excessive Page Outs, implies directly that the
computer may need to have more RAM installed; a matching pair of higher capacity
correct spec RAM chips, could be purchased from a reputable source & installed.
As much as, perhaps 16GB in a RAM upgrade, depending on the MacBook build.
All of those red-lettered items in the report that did not load, appear to be system
parts; perhaps that may be something to investigate. Not sure why that is...
{Because today is part of a weekend, I'd suspect the time of day and weekday are
both behind the lack of an earlier reply to your post here. Also, if there have been
weather or other disruptions in the lives of those volunteers who offer help, then
maybe they've had to modify their plans around such events. Or power outages.
    We had one here for more than an hour, and everything went out. Even phones.}
So hopefully some other knowledgable readers may contribute ideas on how to
resolve the issues; troubleshooting may be helpful, and to read through sections
of TheSafeMac to see if there is any malware, adware, or other odd activity that
may point to a cause; removal suggestions for those are in that site. Also, if you
had visited any torrent or sharing sites, or downloaded free yet contaminated items
from software download sites, they could also affect your computer. There are
a few areas in that web site worth reading through.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • HT2353 Macbook Pro running slow and freezing

So it just started yesterday running slow and freezing. I'm starting to get very frustrated. I research to see what could be the problem. I saw people suggesting that it could be the storage. My storage is 464.75 free out of 499.25. I just brought this computer last year on christmas. I thought it could be adblock but it never cause me problems but I paused the app and it still doesn't work. What is wrong? Should I restart the computer? If I do how can I backup my things? Also i'm really not a computer person so if you can describe to me the problem in layman terms that'll be great!
    OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.4
OH! and it's not just safari that's going slow but itunes, word, etc

    Hello,
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • MacBook Pro running slow and freezing--Installed OnyX

I am having problems with my MacBook Pro. For a while I was using Safari and getting the beachball A LOT. So, I switched to Chrome. For the past two days it has been running slow and freezing...when typing it would freeze and a few seconds later it would resume and the letters I typed would appear. After reading forums, I did the repair disk permissions. Nothing changed. I downloaded OnyX. After executing two tasks under cleaning..I believe System and User, it is already running better and hasn't froze once. My question is...which tasks should I perform on OnyX? I read somewhere that not all of them should be done. Like I said, I only did 2 and then stopped. I'm kind of over my head and don't want to screw anything up or do anything that doesn't need to be done. Any help would be appreciated.

  • My MacBook is running slow and freezes

My MacBook is running slow and freezes.

If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

  • MacBook Pro started running slow and freezing up

    Hi,
What are some things I can do when my MacBook Pro starts running slow and freezing up?  For example, windows are slow to open, and that pinwheel thing keeps spinning.  Clean up tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    tamyc,
    You can try resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller;
    You can try booting into Safe mode, to see whether it runs just as slowly (and freezes up) then;
    You can try disabling your antivirus software, to see if that makes a difference;
You can download, install, and run EtreCheck, and include in your reply the output from an EtreCheck run, which might help identify software which should be uninstalled or updated.

  • Macbook Pro 2014 (16gb ram) running very slow in excel.  Can anyone help?

My Macbook Pro 2014 is running extremely slow in Mac Excel 2011.  I just recently made the purchase (Last week) to upgrade from my Macbook Pro 2013.  The upgrade was for work as I handle large spreadsheets in my new role.  It would take some time to load before, and I was told it was because I only had 4GB of RAM.  Now, I have 16 GB of RAM and it runs slower than before.  Can anyone assist me with a solution?

  • Intel macbook keeps slowing and freezing

I have the 2006 Intel Macbook which Ive upgraded with an SSD drive and Mountain Lion. Periodically the system freezes up, say on launching an application, opening a web page etc, and takes a couple of minutes to come right. Ive done a complete reinstall of Mountain Lion which seemed to sort things for a little while. My intuition is that the Macbook is struggling with the SSD, like the 'old' innards are finding the drive too fast or something!
    Any suggestions anyone?

    chrisblythenz wrote:

The first thing that jumps out is that Mountain Lion is not going to install on a circa 2006 MacBook because of its 32-bit EFI. At best, a Late-2006 MacBook will be running Lion. A "early" 2006 MacBook (Core Duo model) peaks at Snow Leopard.
The second thing that comes to mind is that you're probably having an issue with not enough RAM and that the freezing is caused by the system paging out to virtual memory. After such a freeze, open Activity Monitor and check to see how much swap is used (on the System Memory tab). If you've got a bunch of apps open, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see you several GB deep into swapping. That's not going to be a comfy fit.
Lion itself requires 2GB RAM minimum. A Late-2006 MacBook can unofficially support 4GB installed (with 3GB of that 4 being usable). That'll help a lot.
As for the SSD, your SATA system can only support 1.5GB/s and 3.0GB/s drives. I've an Intel Series 320 600GB SSD in my Mid-2007 MacBook and it rips along beautifully. If you've put in one of the new 6GB/s SATA drives, you may find it to be an awkward fit due to most of the newer drives not being able to  fall back to 1.5GB/s mode.

  • Macbook Pro running slow and freezing...please help?

Hi there everyone. I have a Macbook Pro that's a few years old and it started to experience some slowdown and freezing recently, which was even worse after installing Yosemite. It's mostly running slow on Safari but it seems that programs are freezing and taking way longer to open and close too. I'm not all that familiar with diagnosing these sorts of issues on Macs and was hopeful that someone could take a look at this for me? This is the EtreCheck report, and any help would be much appreciated! Thanks guys.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro 15 - Slow and Freezes

    Good Morning.
This is MBP is running slowly and freezes, particularly if watching video, but is sluggish even opening applications from finder.
The MBP was taken to a apple service provider with the complaint of very sluggish and a strange graphic issue (The graphics were garbled at times - there is a known issue with logic boards.) a picture of the graphics was provided.
The service provider stated that the HDD drive failed the SMART test but graphics passed his test. When questioned if he was comfortable that nothing was wrong with graphics based on picture he stated that he advised I take it to the apple store. Which I did. There the MBP passed both the graphics and HDD test. based on the photograph the no less than 3 geniuses agreed the logic board was bad, though it wasn't the "typical" failure. The genius bar was given the information about the apple service provider and slowness. All of that was entered into the comments.
The MBP was sent to apples repair depot where the logic board and magsafe board was replaced. and the MBP was returned with assurances that all was well.
Though the graphics issue has not reoccurred the speed is not any better and may be worse. (in excess of a minute fifteen boot, noticeable delay opening browsers or menus).
    Additonal information:
When provided to the apple service provider (and presumably the apple store) the computer contained the original 4gb ram. and had never been opened. The ram showing on this report is crucial, contains the mac logo and was installed because the service provider said 4gb was low, so when the computer returned and was still slow it was tried - it seems to have made no difference).
The HDD failed to secure erase the freespace on HDD 3 times prior to repair with the message "could not create temp file" after running overnight.
I've reset PRAM and SMC and run trough various "why is my mac slow" guides to no avail.
The anti virus was also added post repair to look for any thing malicious.
    Help please.

"This is not a retina 15" - though I just turned off the graphics switching to see if that made any difference."
That recall is not just for the Retina model:
    From:
    https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
    Affected Models
    MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011)
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011)
I'm aware of that recall it is the "known problem" I mentioned in the original post, however the linked story RE: Yosemite referenced retina MacBook Pros
There is an issue in retina MBPs and Yosemite:
    http://www.macnn.com/articles/14/11/04/several.support.threads.discussing.issue. related.to.gpu.switching/
"Regardless of symptoms, the issue has been traced to switching to the discrete GPU from the integrated GPU.
    Read more: http://www.macnn.com/articles/14/11/04/several.support.threads.discussing.issue. related.to.gpu.switching/#ixzz3YWcK80s9"
So I was not sure if this was discussing a separate issue, that is why I mentioned it was not a Retina.
"Does "disk warrior" report anything that the apple store test would not?"
The Apple Store would run the Apple System Diagnostic (ASD).
    Re:
    http://www.dannydullin.com/apple-service-diagnostic-asd-reference-list/
The trick when you take it to the Apple Store is to make your computer repeat the failure that you see. It actually would be a good idea to get it to fail just before your appointment. Don't shut it down just take it to them frozen.
Then you can hand the genius the MBP and say, "This is what happens."
Actually a suggestion of another senior member around here. I'd credit her if I could remember who it was.
They ran two test one was a video test and the other was a hard drive test "quick apple store" that said it "randomly checked disk" or something close to that.
I can only hope to get it to fail right before going. - only real problem is that considering the apple disclaimer about their responsibility for your data, there is absolutely no way they are getting it with our data on it. But if I can get it to fail I'll let them see it before wiping it... I mean the sluggishness is obvious so at least they can see that.
I do appreciate the ideas. There were a number of people there when I dropped it off the first time, one of them was on her third logic board. Another on the second.

  • My macbook pro is lagging and freezing constantly in simple applications.

It just happen very recently and out of nowhere. Simple applications like word and finder where becoming really slow and just scrolling up and down seem to take several minutes. Most applications require me to use activity monitor to force quit. Booting up takes about several minutes. I have about 250gb free and have checked constantly the CPU and how much RAM my mac uses(2.00gb free of 4gb). I also have done repair permisions without any problems. Please help. Thanks in advance.

  • MacBook Pro running so slow and freezing

    Hi guys
my MacBook Pro has been working like a dream!! Then 2 days ago watching a movie through vlc media player it just froze? Then the coloured spinning wheel appeared.
after this it runs so slow! To the point that it doesn't run at all? constantly spinning wheel, and freezing?
I have repaired through disk utility, this does nothing, reset all sorts of things, factory reset, tried to restore from a back up but this always fails?
    Any ideas please?

    Try using fsck.
    1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
    2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    3. If it finds a problem and repairs it, immediately run fsck again until the drive checks OK.
    4. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit should bootup normally.

  • Itunes 8 64bit using 400mb of ram?? sluggish and freezing

Is anyone else having a lot of problems with the 64 bit version of itunes 8? I have been using it for a week now... It can sync my iphone ok, and play music, but it randomly becomes sluggish, and freezes a lot... The task manager says its using over 400mb of memory when i go to end the process... Also can't get it to update my applications.. just wondering if anyone has any ideas.. thanks

I also have 64bit Vista (and iTunes), with a Quadcore processor and 6Gigs of RAM. It is really sluggish and there are several-seconds delays between when I click and when the event happens. It also seems to be absorbing many mouse clicks, meaning sometimes when I wait nothing happens. It's pretty frustrating and almost unusable, but I noticed that if there is no iPod connected it's much better.
I do have a large collection (about 7000 songs @ about 45GB). On my 5 year old computer I blamed this for the sluggishness, but it's no better on this machine (maybe worse). Even during the long pauses the CPU usage does not peak on any of the 4 processors. I am not using any other CPU intensive apps at the same time as iTunes.
Not sure what's going on and I know that no one can help, but if someone at Apple is reading this, please get your test and development team to work on 64bit iTunes 8.
