Aluminum Macbook battery drains when closed / asleep

My new macbook (aluminum, 2.4ghz) always has a drained battery when I turn it on in the morning.
I typically put my fully-charged macbook to sleep in the evening by closing the lid. I do see the pulsing light, so I assume it is asleep. However, when I open the macbook the next day, the battery is heavily drained or empty. In the latter case, I need to connect power before it will start.
Anyone else have this problem? Ideas?

I do understand that sleep mode does consume power, and consumes more power the hibernating, thats what makes this issue so illusive. The thing is that it battery is being drained excessively and at a higher rate. My previous 2.4ghz black macbook didn't even drain half as fast as the new one. I should know I was using it less then two days ago.
At any rate, I reset the SMC twice today, and actually just reset the PRAM for good measure. It could be me playing mind games with myself, but I think it helped. I put the computer in sleep mode for approximately 2 hours and it drained about 1%. I do think thats more along the lines of normal sleep mode power drainage. I will test again tonight and repost.
Thanks for the help.

  • Macbook Pro running slow/battery drains when closed

    Hi!
I have a Macbook Pro 13-inch, mid-2012 running OS X 10.9. It recently started running extremley slow and the spinning ball pops up all the time when I try to do basically anything, but mostly when I try to do more than one thing at a time. Sometimes it will run normal, but then slow up. The spinning ball also pops up basically everytime that I try to play a video or anything like that. The adobe flash plugin also seems to crash a lot.
Also, when it is closed, it becomes very warm and the battery drains while it is closed. It seems like it doesn't really turn off when it closes.
Anyone know what could be causing this?
    Thanks!

I ended up having to take it in. Turned out there was a connection to the hard drive that was loose or something. I took it to a store in my city that specializes in macs so I didn't have to spend a fortune. Otherwise, I had someone else look at it and they said that it could have been from when I updated my computer, that something didn't download properly- which has been an issue in some computers.

  • ThinkPad E455 Excessive Battery Drains When Power Off

I bought a new ThinkPad E455 two months ago with AMD processor and I use Windows 7 (64-bit) as my operating system. The problem is, since a week ago, when I turn off my laptop (completely shut-down, not hibernating nor sleeping), the battery looses 14% in less than 24 hours. This problem has never happened before. When I search for solution, apparently my problem is similar to https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E535-High-battery-drain-when-laptop-is-powered-off/ta-p/1249897 and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E530-Battery-drains-and-power-manager-issue/ta-p/1249887 and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/E440-battery-drains-when-powered-off/m-p/1527086/highlight/true#M18743. It appears that the power drains happened in other type of ThinkPad as well. Moreover, it seems that this problem is not limited to ThinkPad series (e.g: http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-2324931/laptop-battery-drains-powered-shutdown.html), and more surprisingly, some of other brands experience this condition as well. My question is, what causes the power drain? I mean, the laptop just worked fine for a period of time (in my case it is two months), if it was trigerred by something, what is it? I looked for the technical updating BIOS solution in http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht077068, but unfortunately the series E455 is not in the list. Of course, updating the BIOS using incompatible version is not recommended by the technical support. Please help me.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Configuration_and_Power_Interface When you think the laptop is powered off it's actually in ACPI Power State S5 with power being supplied to the power button and some of the USB sockets. So, when you shut down the laptop and then removed the power cord, if the BIOS version was lower than 1.13, the laptop was still draining the battery.I followed your suggestion, and it seems solving the problem, thank you. However, another problem arises just recently. When I was playing a game on my laptop, the battery capacity is decreasing when the AC power connected (as described by both lenovo and Windows battery gauge). I post this problem in https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/11e-Windows-E-and-Edge-series/ThinkPad-E455-Battery-Capacity-Reduced-When-Connected-to-AC/td-p/2106218. Oddly, the problem (seems) does not occur when I quit the game to windows. Why was this happen?

  • Lenovo notebook E540 Battery drains when it is not powered on

Lenovo Notebook E540 battery drains when it is not powered on. My colleague said that there is a cloud connection being connected during power off and it consumes power. Is that possible? Any resolution?

    Hi Kingchechan,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As far as I know only the Windows update will be accessing to the server, or might be any other 3rd party cloud related application, which might be accessing to the cloud server.
Did you check disabling USB always on in BIOS & Wake On Lan from Windows AND BIOS
Check running command powercfg /devicequery wake_armed to see if any device is programmed to power on the laptop might be this is consuming battery power.
    Best regards,

  • Battery Drain when not in use--Gen 6 Nano

I have used Ipods for years now. Still have an Ipod Classic and a Shuffle that I use regularly. I have been pleased with the battery life, as a whole.
Recently I purchased a Nano Touch--Gen 6. I really like the Ipod + Nike features.
The issue I have is with the battery draining when the unit is not in use. If the unit has been fully charged, I will unplug from computer or wall charger and make sure that: 1)Music/radio is paused 2) Nike receiver is unplugged from Nano. 3) Screen is off.
If I do not use the nano for an extended period of time, say around 12-18 hours, I notice that the battery has drained between 50%-75% even if nothing is playing or "on". Nothing should be draining the battery this far, in my opinion.
I can't believe that this is typical. Do I have a bad battery?
    Your help would be appreciated.

You are not alone. I have had my Nano for several weeks now and have noticed the same thing. I would use it for short trips in the car while I ran errands and find that after only technically using it for maybe an hour or so (over the course of several days), I would already be low on battery. I read the manual and you can only put the ipod in sleep mode. It stays on for 36 hours and only then will it actually turn all the way off. So technically the battery last for several days but that doesn't do you any good unless you are using it for long periods of time all at once. I'm really frustrated because I really like it other than the fact that I'm always having to charge it.

  • IPhone4 battery draining when not in use

am just wondering if anyone experiencing battery draining when not in use? i charge my iphone4 before going to bed and woke up this morning to realise that my battery had drain 22% on stand by... is this normal? can anyone confirm it to me please, thank you

Just an update guys --after draining (on standby) over 20% of my battery charge last week, it has risen to or about 40+% in the last couple of days. I haven't changed any settings or whatsoever. I had to charged it twice during the day yesterday and it was bloody frustrating. anyway, i went to the apple shop today and told them the problem... they scanned my iphone4's battery and it was evident and showed when was the last time it was charged and how much battery life has it lost throughout the day. After scanning my iphone we did not even have to discuss repair or do any setting or software checks. I was gobsmacked --as i did not have to ask for a replacement, I was immediately offered a swap to a brand new iPhone4... lucky me? umm, i don't know...maybe? But the thing is, they seemed to be aware of the problem and they are keeping a low profile on tackling the problem. so my suggestion is if anyone has a battery problem with their unit, take it to apple and have the battery scan. As such, i have to wait and see if this new unit will present the same problem, although i must admit, for some reason, this new unit has a slight different behaviour than my previous iphone4.
Other issues on my previous iPhone4:
    1. frequently dropping signal --not a problem with the new replacement unit
    2. if i turn off my "phone" feature on the multitasking bar, red dot appears on the phone icon and i couldn't make a call as it seemed blocked and it kept asking me to set-up the voicemail feature every time --again, not a problem with the new unit.
    3. even my tomtom app has changed its behaviour, i have discovered new features without updating the app --strange isn't it?
    4. playing NOVA game was a pain with the previous unit as i kept getting network problem and interrupting the game.
    5. it kept shuffling my music when i'm using ipod whilst walking. imagine, hearing about 8 different tunes in a span of 5 seconds...
anyway, time will tell with this new unit as i have kept the same settings from my previous unit and uploaded my previous back-up data and apps. so it would be like having my old iphone4 and we'll see in the morning if it will drain on stand by as well --i hope not 'cos am getting really frustrated with it. oh, by the way, blue tooth feature don't work with my new replacement unit --NICE!!!

  • Battery drains when power connected

    Hi,
Early 2011 MBP 17inch battery drains when the power is connected. It seems to be that when the system is having some load battery is discharging even when the power is connected. Is this normal?
    Regards

Yes it is normal, For Mac's that is. Apple doesn't supply a large enough AC power supply to both charge the battery, or stop it from being used, when the system is under heavy load. Once you start to run the system hard it will draw power from both the AC and the battery.

  • Battery draining when macbook pro sleeping

When i leave a certain program open and the macbook pro goes to sleep the battry drains to 0%.  When the program is not open the battery holds its charge when sleeping.  Is there anything i can do to prevent this program from runing down the battery?

To anyone claiming that the poster is "wrong" about their Unibody Macbook Pro battery draining during sleep- I would counter that you are the one who is wrong.
I used to have a 2006 Macbook Pro that I could close the lid, let it sleep for several days, open it back up and bingo, plenty of life, nearly unchanged from when I closed it. On my new 2009 Macbook Pro Unibody, if I close the lid and open it back up the next day, the battery is either completely gone and in hibernate mode or I have about 10% left. This is from a full charge!
Yes, I know the machine is actually sleeping because I have the pulsating light. No it isn't any software I'm running because I cloned over the hard drive from the old machine resulting in an identical system and experienced the issue right away. Later, I performed a clean install from Snow Leopard DVD, didn't install any software, and noted the exact same problem.
No it isn't the battery. It is in "normal" condition with over 5200 mAh remaining at full charge.
No it is not from BlueTooth; it is disabled. No it is not from a CD or DVD playing in iTunes, there is none inserted. No it is not from File Sharing or any other sharing; none are enabled. I have eliminated all the variables identified in this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776) but still the problem persists.
This is definitely a hardware problem and one that Apple seems to be ignoring. I just can't justify buying another computer from these guys as all indications are that they have abandoned supporting their once core user base, professional media authors, in exchange for teeny-bopper iPod buyers.
Absolutely no acknowledgment of this issue after countless posts on many threads from dissatisfied users verifying the problem is bad customer service and bad public relations.

  • N95 Battery drains when plugged into PC

When I'm working I have my N95 plugged into my PC but, I have found that my battery drains quicker than when it's not connected to the pc.
Can anyone explain why this is or, do I have a problem with my N95?
    Regards,
    Jono

Isn't it also accessing the external drive as well, thus taking CPU cycles, thus draining the battery? As the USB does not charge but provides signaling from the phone to the PC via the USB it would be safe to assume that the power drain is simply from the constant communication.

  • Macbokk battery drains when shut off

    Hi!
I have a 6 months old Macbook who drains battery when shut off. Is it normal to loose aprox 3% battery in 3  days or aprox 40% in 3-4 weeks when completly shut off?
    Battery has 10 charge cycles
Grateful for all answers or ideas!

With 646 cycles on that battery, you can expect to see some funny behavior.
If at all possible, test a known-good battery in your computer before investing in a replacement.
And yes, I do think you need to replace your battery.

  • IPad 3 very hot w battery drain when streaming AirPlay!

Why does my iPad 3 get very hot and battery drains very quickly only when streaming with AirPlay?

Just in case anyone else is experiencing the same or similar scenario that I was (see first post), turns out that the Apple Care Geniuses determined that the PMU (Power Management Unit - I think the "U" is for "unit" anyway), was corrupted or not working properly, so too much power was being used for tasks that shouldn't have used up so much power.
They replaced my unit, it may or or may not be a refurbished unit, although it looks new and was manufactured on a later date than the one I brought in.
The Geniuses were very helpful and didn't just turn me away saying to "turn down the brightness or turn off WiFi when not in use" which I do anyway.

  • Camera battery drain when shooting tethered to LR3.x

    Hi:
I've been experiencing very rapid battery drain in my Nikon D90 when shooting tethered into a laptop running LR3.x under Windows7 32-bit. Is this to be expected because of the constant transfer of images across the USB connection?
Thanks in advance for any insight on this.
    Regards,
    Peter

Even transfering via USB for downloading will cause the battery to drain. Tethering would certainly drain the battery more than shooting non tethered, but it shouldn't feel excessive.

  • Q5 - Battery drains when SDcard is present

Good morning, Today, the battery of my Q5 works well (even better than with OS 10.2),If I plug a empty SD card, the battery keep working well,But if I load some file(s) or music file(s) on this SD card, battery start draining very quickly ?? What can I do to stop this battery drain, to be able to use a SD card with my Q5 ? Thanks in advance, Q5 OS 10.3.1.1565 + Link for Mac 1.2.2 (build 11)

It all started with Calendar and Synchornization issues. After installing the OS 10.3 upgrade, battery passed from one small day to 3-4 hours. After removing SDcard and resting to factor default (OS 10.3) my Q5 several times (more than 10 times), the issue was solved by a BBM update (a priori issue was linked to BBM and the Android Player). Battery was back like never : today my Q5 can stand 1,5+ day. But as soon as I plug the SDcard with at least one file on it, battery drains in 3-4 hours. (I have repeated 4-5 times the experiment). Drain only happens when file(s) are present on the SDcard ... ? And in addition, Calendar app is still unstable. Any ideas, are more than welcome :-)

  • Battery drain when not in use

Occasionally, the battery in my 3rd generation iPad rins down to near nothing in a very short time, even though I am not using it.  The Ipad has not been turned off, but there are no apps open.  The WiFi is on, but cell data turned off.  Sometimes, when I have set it down for a few hours, I'll pick it up and it is particularly warm and the battery is near dead.  Other times, it seems to hold a charge for several days. When I am using it, the battery drain seems to be normal. Is there something under the hood, as it were, that I am missing? Is there something I have left running that isn't apparent?
    Thanks,

Look in the notifications. there's a ton defaulted to on that you may not need.
Also look to background app update and background app refresh. those also run in the background and can effect your battery.
You may also want to shut down any programs/apps that are running that you may not need. Double tape the home button. You'll see the previews for all running apps on the screen. Flick the preview up and off the screen to close the app. Tap on the home screen preview or single tap the home button to exit the mode.
