Aluminum of battery on new macbook looks splotchy

Hi All
Just got my new 15" macbook pro from Amazon (prior model). New unit, not refurbished. Seems to function fine, but the exterior aluminum surface of the battery compartment looks very splotchy, as if something was stuck on it. I think I've read that new batteries ship with plastic on them, and sometimes when you remove the plastic.... the splotchy affect is there from the adhesive. Either that, or something is funky with the battery.
A slightly damp microfiber doesn't seem to clean it. Would alcohol or a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser be okay to try? It'd be ideal to just clean it rather than exchange it.
There's also some slight scuff marks around a couple of the screws on the bottom, perhaps from manufacturing. It's probably common and could live with that.
Thanks in advance for input

It seems to me that with a brand new Mac, you should have neither splotchiness or scratches around the screws. If you have access to an Apple Store, you might want to take it in for evaluation. One possible cause of the splotchiness could even be a leak from the battery. Especially if the battery is swollen or distorted.
Was the Mac properly sealed in new packaging? It should have been. If not, it may have been opened and messed with.
Good luck!

However mine skips this completely and just turns off. WHY? does this mean the battery is bad?
Resetting the PRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html) fixed the problem in my case. then i did the calibrate the battery again this time it went to sleep not shut down i did this 3 more times why?
the 3 forced shut downs without entering SafeSleep. with logs indicating improper shutdown, will that cause severe corruption to the os and do i have to reinstall the os now?2.66 ghz 2010

the 9 more 4 in 10.6.4 forced shut downs without entering SafeSleep. with logs indicating improper shutdown, will that cause severe corruption to the os and do i have to reinstall the os now?2.66 ghz 2010 but if it happens again you should try
i hate to do this reinstalling the OS, if this do not work also, then you should call apple, or take your MBP to an apple store. on june 24 2010 i am going to talk to spence about this. so what do i do now? this happed on june 16 2010 4 more times
without entering SafeSleep. only one time it worked on 10.6.4

  • Terrible Battery Life - New MacBook Pro

OK, 4 weeks into my New MacBook Pro. MacBook Pro 15", 8GB Ram, 512GB SSD (Lion O/S as shipped). I know there are other threads but here's the full summary from my perspective.
Prior machine was MacBook Pro 17", 4GB Ram and 256 GB Hard Drive (Upgraded to Lion O/S). This older machine and the battery is 30 months old. It's awesome but I really needed more RAM and better battery life. Stumped over over $4000 for it.
I migrated virtually everything (Using Migration Assistant). Machine came up perfectly, works like a charm.
Except, the new machine gets only about an hour more at best than the old machine. The old machine was getting about 2.5 hours to 3 hours. I could get some work done on a plane and watch a 2 hour movie.
However, the new machine will only get me about 3 1/2 hours. I only get 2 1/2 hours if I watch a movie.
This is terrible. I have taken to Genius store and they agree the battery is fine and something is wrong but didn't have a fix. They and I since have tried all sorts of things at boot time to clean up errors, disk stuff, aplplied updates and all that. Basically, everything suggested in every forum. Some of these things actually have an effect on the "Time available" on the status bar, showing 7-8 hours for a while leading me into a false sense of security that a "fix" has worked. However, then after an hour or so of of use or booting from sleep, it's really averaging just 3 1/2 hours in real life, and sometimes just 3 hours.
I had a spare bettery for my old MacBook so could get 6-7 hours on a long haul flight. Now, I am dead at 3 hours in.
SInce Genius bar have confirmed machine is fine, and others have reported similar findings when going to Lion *AND* I have exactly the same apps on both machines... what the heck can it be?
Does anyone want to guess? Does someone from Apple want to "see" my machine in use?
HELP HELP HELP. PLEASE. This $4k machine is leaving me with a very sour taste.

Suppose you elaborate on what you are doing with the MBP that makes the battery life terrible.

  • Bluetooth on new MacBook Aluminum and all MacBooks before

I have a new Macbook Aluminum. Bluetooth frequently doesn't recognize my mouse and/or keyboard. Now that I have added a monitor the mouse and keyboard are connected but NOTHING happens on waking even though the bluetooth preferences shows it's connected, so I turn off/on bluetooth and sometimes one or the other actually works. I've had the new Macbook three weeks and bluetooth has disappeared completely four times requiring a battery out reset to get it back. Are there any fixes for a Macbook with what is obviously VISTA bluetooth?

    Hello western:
Since your Macbook is new, punt the problem to Apple. Either take it to an Apple store, or call Applecare with a warranty issue.
The intermittent nature of the problem indicates, to me, a hardware issue.

  • New MacBook Aluminum - daughter installed OS Install Disk then cancelled it

My daughter got her new MacBook yesterday - had it up and running, on wireless connection, etc, was in applications, etc - got home and for some reason decided
to put the Install OS X Disk thinking that there was more to install - then realized she had that and clicked "cancel" She hadn't read manual of course - and now all we have is white screen showing apple, and and "thinking" circle (or whatever you call it)
We are both new Mac users - what do I do??
I tried what they said in manual - pg 54 - cause I can't get it to start up - battery is fine I checked that - I think I should restore it to the factory settings - how do I do that? remove battery and holding down power button???
    please help???

Hi Cindy, and congrats on the MacBook. Sorry you left the DVD lying around! We just got a new MacBook in the house this past weekend.
Good luck. Explain to your daughter that she should just pretend she just unwrapped the MacBook for the first time, after you (and Apple, perhaps) get through with it. It'll be good as new.
There are a couple of things to remember, though. First, you're entitled to free phone support on this new computer, so look on the gorgeous skinny white product box for your MacBook's serial number, and also take note of your sales order number. Apple will ask. It's up to you whether you want to make friends with Tech Support. But we had a small glitch with our new 'Book, and Support was just great!
Now, find that great little square book called *Everything Mac,* and look at the bottom of page 61, "Reinstalling the Software . . ."
Then once you've turned to the next page, you'll see that the instructions assume your MacBook is currently functioning normally, but it's not. Since you can read this, at least you have some Mac experience, but perhaps you never encountered this problem before. So:
    • Make sure the MacBook is powered-off. The sleep indicator light should not be visible (refer to page 18 of "Everything Mac" for the location of this light. When it's off, it's fashionably invisible).
    • Carefully insert the Mac OS X Install DVD all the way in, if it's not there already. The 'Book will accept it with the power off.
    • While holding down the C key, push the power button. When the grey Apple and spinner appear, all should be well. Now you may release the C key.
    • At this point, you will be at step 5 on page 62 of the paper manual. So again, good luck.
Just in case something is amiss, I'd play it safe by calling Apple right away at 1-800-263-3394, and making an appointment if necessary so they can go step-by-step along with you and your daughter.
    **It's free!!**
Hope you come across this post in a timely manner. And please write back about how it went!

  • Just boought new MacBook- Flickers when on battery power.... take it back?

Just boought new MacBook- Flickers (brightness) when running on battery power, is this normal or should I take it back to the Apple store?

If you talking about your screen getting little dimmer on battery than with power cord plugged in, that's normal. But if your screen flickers all the time, no that's not normal. I would say take it to an Apple store, and have them look at it.
My mac started to flicker after 6 months or so, I too thought it may be normal, but when I took it in for something else, they noticed it and got it fixed.

  • I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty?

I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty? I want to know if the 3 year extended warranty covers what damage. Like water damage, accidental damage, lost or stolen macbook, manufactory defects, or any other kind of damage, maybe be even cosmetic damage. Can anyone help me?

If you are talking about features of the MBP itself, as long as you are not looking at  the Retina models, then the memory you can upgrade yourself for a lot less than Apple charges, and that does not affect the warranty as Apple considers memory a user permitted upgrade.  Great sources are Crucial and OWC, both are Mac specialists and have on-line videos on how to do the install.
If the 15" is what you are looking at, a good upgrade is the 7200 rpm hard drive, gives a little better performance over the standard 5400 rpm drive.
The Hi Res screen is good if you do a lot of graphics work.
Comparing the 13" amd 15" you will notice the 15" has a second, discrete graphic processor...helps when you get into heavy duty videos, games, graphics...but keep in mind that kicking in the second processor uses a lot of power and will run the battery down faster.
If you are looking at the Retina models, then keep in mind there are no post-purchase upgrade options...you have to buy with everything you want at the start.
    Just some thoughts.

  • Should new macbook battery be charged?

Just received new Macbook Pro today. Booklet indicates that the battery should be full-charged at arrival, but I can't even start the notebook...
    Bad sign ?

Normally are carrying a charge when taken out of box, but don't panic.
Keep it switched off, plug it in.  Does the charger light go green for a couple of seconds and then orange?  If so it is charging.  Give it a couple of hours (or perhaps a little longer).  Has the charger light turned green?  Even better sign - it is now fully charged.
Now try to start it up.  If it still won't start - take it back.
If it does start, check    > About this Mac > More info > System Report > Power
Check battery condition, charge and cycles.
Use it on battery and see if it holds a charge.  It depends on how you are using it but light use (word processing and bit of net surfing or similar) should give you 7 to 10 hours use.  You can check the anticipated battery life by clicking the icon on the top taskbar.
Don't let the battery discharge fully.  This is not good for the battery at all - try to recharge when it drops down to 15-20%

  • Replace battery or buy a new macbook?

Macbook pro 13 inch is about 4.5 years old and battery life lasts about 1.5-2 hours now. As a university student, It's annoying to have to charge the laptop all the time. Will replacing the battery drastically improve the battery life or should I just buy a new macbook?
    Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh): 2791
      Fully Charged: No
      Charging: No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5148
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count: 993
      Condition: Normal
      Battery Installed: Yes
      Amperage (mA): -1997
      Voltage (mV): 11092

The battery likely has been depleted of ability in its chemistry to take & hold a charge.
To replace it, like you'd do a worn tire on a car, is the normal maintenance involved.
Depending on the other aspects of that specific MacBook, you may also consider
other update or upgrade; such as RAM memory chip upgrade, larger HDD capacity
or other. Usually anything to help the computer work. There are diminishing returns
if the costs to keep the computer working exceed the costs of a new one and all the
new software versions to run on it, you may be required to purchase, to continue.
Also, a new computer (macbook/pro/air, etc) is a product you cannot upgrade; you'd
purchase the level of product with RAM and SSD or HDD capacity, or buy a CTO
custom built capacity from the AppleStore online. RAM is soldered to the logicboard.
    A new computer purchase invites you to upgrade your software, especially third-party;
and then you'd need to figure out how the thing works. It's better to have a good working
computer for the stuff you need, then get another to slowly build up & replace the older.
A battery & spare power adapter still are less costly than a new computer. You may be
able to have an Apple specialist or genius at an Apple Store check & test your MacBook.
Depending on the MacBook model build year series, you may be able to get replacement
batteries from an Apple authorized service provider, or from an online source such as
macsales.com (OWC) where you can see the product match, if available, on site. This is
also a good place to look once you know for sure your MacBook model, for RAM upgrade.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook pro 15" mid 2010 i spilled water on keyboard now it wont power on if the battery is connected and the keys on keyboard doesnt work it works fine with no battery and external keyboard if i order a battery and new keyboard will every else work again

macbook pro 15" mid 2010 i spilled water on keyboard now it wont power on if the battery is connected and the keys on keyboard doesnt work it works fine with no battery and external keyboard if i order a battery and new keyboard will every else work again lik it did before

If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.
