Always backing up....

every time I plug my touch into itunes 7.7, it does this long back up thing every time. I have the 2.0 firmware and it just seems like a real drag to have to back up everything every time. What gives? Am I doing something wrong?

Up in the iTunes window where it says Backing up.... see the little X? Click it to stop the backup. It seems to be safe to do so. I've been doing it for the last week...though not every time.

When I installed Lion all of my files were intact and where I left them, and I did not back up my Mac, however having seen some of the problems some people are coming across when installing Lion I would recommend backing up before you install (just to be on the safe side).
    Hope this helps!

  • Time machine always backs up same amount of data

When backing up with Time Machine it always backs up the same amount of data each time (140GB).  I am not modifying 140GB of data each day or even each week so why does Time Machine always default to this amount of data?
I would like TM to only backup modified data so that I am not waiting hours for TM to complete backup.  Looking for a reset or workaround for this issue.

  • Always backing up GB not mb ??

My Time Capsule always seem to want to back up about 13-20GB per day ?. . . .I always let it complete these backups but it never seems to ease.
I expected after the initial backup that all the Time Capsule would so would be to back up incremental changs to files etc but it seems to always want to backup a few GB every time . . . .whats wrong with my set up ?
I have the Time Capusle set to not back up the backup that sits onthe desktop when its backing up.

    jay,
Consider the following regarding large incremental backups...
    *_Incremental Backups Seem Too Large!_*
Open the Time Machine Prefs on the Mac in question. How much space does it report you have "Available"? When a backup is initiated how much space does it report you need?
Now, consider the following, it might give you some ideas:
Time Machine performs backups at the file level. If a single bit in a large file is changed, the WHOLE file is backed up again. This is a problem for programs that save data to monolithic virtual disk files that are modified frequently. These include Parallels, VMware Fusion, Aperture vaults, or the databases that Entourage and Thunderbird create. These should be excluded from backup using the Time Machine Preference Exclusion list. You will, however, need to backup these files manually to another external disk.
One poster observed regarding Photoshop: “If you find yourself working with large files, you may discover that TM is suddenly backing up your scratch disk's temp files. This is useless, find out how to exclude these (I'm not actually sure here). Alternatively, turn off TM whilst you work in Photoshop.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1209412]
If you do a lot of movie editing, unless these files are excluded, expect Time Machine to treat revised versions of a single movie as entirely new files.
If you frequently download software or video files that you only expect to keep for a short time, consider excluding the folder these are stored in from Time Machine backups.
If you have recently created a new disk image or burned a DVD, Time Machine will target these files for backup unless they are deleted or excluded from backup.
    *Events-Based Backups*
Time Machine does not compare file for file to see if changes have been made. If it had to rescan every file on your drive before each backup, it would not be able to perform backups as often as it does. Rather, it looks for EVENTS (fseventsd) that take place involving your files and folders. Moving/copying/deleting/saving files and folders creates events that Time Machine looks for. [http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/14]
Installing new software, upgrading existing software, or updating Mac OS X system software can create major changes in the structure of your directories. Every one of these changes is recorded by the OS as an event. Time Machine will backup every file that has an event associated with it since the installation.
Files or folders that are simply moved or renamed are counted as NEW files or folders. If you rename any file or folder, Time Machine will back up the ENTIRE file or folder again no matter how big or small it is.
George Schreyer describes this behavior: “If you should want to do some massive rearrangement of your disk, Time Machine will interpret the rearranged files as new files and back them up again in their new locations. Just renaming a folder will cause this to happen. This is OK if you've got lots of room on your backup disk. Eventually, Time Machine will thin those backups and the space consumed will be recovered. However, if you really want recover the space in the backup volume immediately, you can. To do this, bring a Finder window to the front and then click the Time Machine icon on the dock. This will activate the Time Machine user interface. Navigate back in time to where the old stuff exists and select it. Then pull down the "action" menu (the gear thing) and select "delete all backups" and the older stuff vanishes.” (http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html)
    *TechTool Pro Directory Protection*
This disk utility feature creates backup copies of your system directories. Obviously these directories are changing all the time. So, depending on how it is configured, these backup files will be changing as well which is interpreted by Time Machine as new data to backup. Excluding the folder these backups are stored in will eliminate this effect.
    *Backups WAY Too Large*
If an initial full backup or subsequent incremental backup is tens or hundreds of Gigs larger than expected, check to see that all unwanted external hard disks are still excluded from Time Machine backups.
This includes the Time Machine backup drive ITSELF. Normally, Time Machine is set to exclude itself by default. But on rare occasions it can forget. When your backup begins, Time Machine mounts the backup on your desktop. (For Time Capsule users it appears as a white drive icon labeled something like “Backup of (your computer)”.) If, while it is mounted, it does not show up in the Time Machine Prefs “Do not back up” list, then Time Machine will attempt to back ITSELF up. If it is not listed while the drive is mounted, then you need to add it to the list.
    *Recovering Backup Space*
If you have discovered that large unwanted files have been backed up, you can use the Time Machine “time travel” interface to recovered some of that space.
Launch Time Machine from the Dock icon.
Initially, you are presented with a window that represents “Today (Now)”. DO NOT make changes to file while you see “Today (Now)” at the bottom of the screen.
Click on the window just behind “Today (Now)”. This represents the last successful backup and should display the date and time of this backup at the bottom of the screen.
Now, navigate to where the unwanted file resides.
Highlight the file and click the Actions menu (Gear icon) from the toolbar.
Select “Delete all backups of <this file>”.
*FileVault / Boot Camp / iDisk Syncing*
Note: Leopard has changed the way it deals with FileVault disk images, so it is not necessary to exclude your Home folder if you have FileVault activated. Additionally, Time Machine ignores Boot Camp partitions as the manner in which they are formatted is incompatible. Finally, if you have your iDisk Synced to your desktop, it is not necessary to exclude the disk image file it creates as that has been changed to a sparsebundle as well in Leopard.
Let us know if this was helpful.
    Cheers!

  • Time machine always backs up a minimum 2GB to Time Capsule

For some reason Time Machine always likes to back up a minimum of 2GB, even with virtually no use of my laptop. I do not think it did this before I got the Time Capsule, but its quite obvious now since the Time Capsule is noticeably slower.
Does anyone else have this occur and is there a way to prevent it?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Are you running Aperture, Entourage, VM Fusion or other programs with a monolithic file structure? One small change in one email results in the entire Entourage data base being backed up since the program views any change as a total change. Same for the other programs. This can fill up a drive really fast.
Download Time Tracker to get a look at what is being backed up on each pass that Time Machine makes.
It takes some time for the program to load, so allow 4-5 minutes before you start to click on the backups to see what is taking up all of the space.

  • NEVER delete your "originals" folder and ALWAYS back up--now I need advice!

Don't even ask. Well, actually, I'll just quickly explain. I was following some directions in a recent-ish copy of MacAddict magazine, and I might have deleted some of what is in iphoto's "Originals" folder. I was trying to delete original photos (unturned-around, un-edited etc.) and it turns out that the structure of the 5.0 iphoto library is slightly different from 6.0 library. I started opening photos in my library and getting the grey question-mark screen and freaked out.
Okay. So this is by far the silliest, most stupid thing I ever did. Don't even give me grief, I feel dumb enough as it is.
BUT I do back everything up regularly (I even keep 2 copies of my hard drive backed up every week)! However, I only recently upgraded to 6.0. My most recent back up was useless (it was last night, deleted photos were already gone) but the one from last week is perfect!! I have my entire iphoto folder, pre-deletion, but also pre-6.0 update. So it is all iphoto 5 file structure.
How do I import that old library into iphoto 6.0? Without wiping my whole iphoto database out entirely (I loaded a few hundred photos from my camera onto iphoto today). I don't want to screw this up, so I want to be very careful about how I go about this.
    Lesson-- back up!!

    gg:
Do you want to just resurrect your library from last week as your primary library? If so, move to your Pictures library and launch iPhoto. It will open and convert it over to the V6 format. That's all you need to do.
However, if you have pictures in your current library that you don't have in the older backup, then you can do the following:
1 - open you current library and assemble the new photos that are not in the backup into a new roll or album, either will do.
2 - quit iPhoto and rename the current library to anything other than "iPhoto Library".
3 - copy your week old library folder into your Pictures library.
4 - launch iPhoto. It will open the newly arrived backup library and update it to V6.
    5 - quit iPhoto.
6 - download and run iPhoto Library Manager, selecting the two libraries you have.
7 - click on the renamed library and select the rolls or albums that are displayed that represent the photos that are not in the week old library (the one named "iPhoto Library".
8 - drag those items onto the other library's icon to copy those files, complete with keywords, etc. into it.
The free version of iPLM will only copy 20 photos at a time so if you have lots more you'll need to get the paid version.
Once the transfer is complete launch iPhoto and check out your primary library. If all is well and there you can delete the renamed library folder. Good luck.
    Do you Twango?
    See, I didn't even ask.

  • Always backs up sparseimage on shared folder

I have recently set up Time Capsule as my Time Machine back up and the first back up, while taking a little while, worked fine.
However every time it backs up it does 20gb of back ups. Using Time Tracker, I found it is the sparseimage on my Users/Shared file that contains my iPhoto library. I have my library set up this way to share among multiple accounts and it is set up to mount for every user as per this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
When I exclude the sparseimage from Time Machine back ups it goes back to normal small backups. Now I realise any change to a sparseimage will back up the entire image but since I have set up Time Capsule I have not even accessed iPhoto. And of course if its excluded its not being backed up.
I don't think its a Time Capsule issue but I can't recall this happening when I had my USB connected hard drive that I used to use for Time Machine back ups.
Can someone offer any advice as to how best to get round this issue (i.e. not full sparse image back up every time) while at the same time allowing the iPhoto library to be shared amongst users.
    Many thanks...

I've not done this, but I think what you need is a +sparse bundle disk image,+ not a +sparse disk image.+
The difference is, the sparse bundle disk image is divided into 8 mb "bands." Only the bands that changed will be backed-up, not the whole thing.
Another difference is, when you set a size for a sparse bundle, it's a maximum. The actual size will be only what you put inside it, and it can grow until it reaches the maximum.
But when you delete things from it, it won't shrink automatically. You have to use a special command via Terminal to shrink it.
Try creating a +sparse bundle disk image+ and copying some or all of your photos into it.

  • Sync'ing Always Backs Up Phone

Everytime I do a sync, the phone backs itself up with iTunes V7.7 taking and extremely long time.
Has anyone experienced this and is it a known bug.
    //Jeff

    +Possible Solution per Gizmodo+
    +1. - Quit iTunes.+
    +2. - Open Terminal.app+
+3. - Copy and paste this in, then hit return:+
    +defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true+
    +4. - Open iTunes+
    +5. - Plug in your iPhone (2.0 or 3G) and sync.+
+It will take a few seconds, assuming you don't have a ton of music or podcasts.+
+Changing the 'true' in step 3 to 'false' will re-enable the backup feature.+
Great suggestion, worked for me. Thanks!!

  • Always back to Space 1

    Dear all,
I have an issue with the assignment of applications to Spaces.
I use 2x3 Spaces and I assigned Safari to Space#6.
Sometimes, I minimize a Safai window.
Then, I move to another Space.
Then, I want to un-minimize the Safari window.
Instead of bringing it back to Space#6, it will bring it back to Space#1.
What is even most amazing is that it is not systematic.
Sometimes, it will behave properly ...
When I was using Spaces on 10.5, I never had that issue.
    Any idea ?
    Many thanks,
    Nicolas

I don't know if this is the same thing (since I don't assign applications to spaces) but I have found the following behavior. If you have a window minimized to the dock in, say, space 6. If you go to another space, say 2, and un-minimize the window with a click, then you go back to 6. So far so good. Now try it again but this time, before un-minimizing, use expose to reveal that minimized window. Now the window will un-minimize into the space where you revealed it with expose!
So, with that long preamble, does your problem manifest itself only after the use of expose?
I love spaces, but, man, it's quirky.

  • Gnome shell volume always back to previous setting when reboot

    Hello,

Agamemnon wrote:I've solved this problem on my computer by installing pavucontrol.

That's odd, I was having the same issue and solved by installing alsa-utils instead. I don't have pavucontrol installed.
I'm quite new to Arch and I was thinking about reporting this as a bug against the pulseaudio package in the Arch tracker, but I would like someone to tell me if this is a good idea first...
EDIT: I should clarify that I didn't have to run 'alsactl store' or any other command; installing the package and changing the volume did the trick.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Time Machine won't back up consistently

I've got a 500GB Time Capsule, I think it's the first generation since it doesn't have N wireless. I've had it since April, bought used. It's always backed up just fine until about a month ago. Automatic backups only work sporadically, and I get two different error messages, seemingly at random:
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk is not available."
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. There was a problem with the network username or password."
I've tried a number of solutions that I found by Googling. I've repaired the hard drive in my Macbook and the one in the TC. I've reset the TC to factory settings several times and re-set everything up. I've deleted the Time Machine plist and also the keychain entries that refer to Time Machine and re-entered everything. I've even gone as far as using Airport Utility to wipe the hard drive in the Time Machine and start from scratch. That was last night. I left my Macbook connected to the TC via ethernet overnight to complete the backup, and this morning had another error message about the network username or password.
It seems like Time Machine is forgetting which disk to backup to. If I go into Time Machine prefs and select the disk and re-enter the password, 90% of the time it will work. That doesn't really do me much good though if automated backups are not working as they should.
I'm really stumped here, especially after basically starting over from scratch with the TC last night. I feel like it might be a setting on my computer but I'm not sure what to even look in to anymore. My computer is a Rev. A Core duo Macbook and I'm running Snow Leopard with all the latest updates.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am about to pull my hair out over this.

Well, I've been stuck at work for the last 48 hours (I manage a hotel and we had a winter storm, so I had to stay on property in case other employees couldn't make it to work) so I hadn't had much chance to do anything.
I was able to successfully complete a new initial backup today, after totally resetting my TC and wiping it's hard drive, deleting the plist for time Machine, the whole nine yards. I also went into Keychain and deleted everything in there pertaining to Time Machine, the Time capsule itself and even the airport entries for this time capsule. I ran Keychain first aid too, just to be sure. I re-set up Time Capsule and all that, and ran the initial backup which worked fine. I sat and waited the full hour after the initial backup to see what happened. The automated backup failed saying there was a problem with the network username and password.
I've started a manual backup now and I'll post in a minute if it works or not.
