Always booting from hibernation image

Is it possible to make ArchLinux always boot from hibernation image? Considering so many services starting up during boot, I think that could boost my boot time a lot.

The gain is actually not that great, since many of the time consuming processes like loading modules still need to be done from hibernation. I think compiling a static kernel with built-in modules will be more effective than always resuming from hibernation.
Having said that, for what you want you could check out Tuxonice, it features stuff like a kiosk-mode, which means that you always boot from a preset hibernation image. Tuxonice requires a custom kernel, but here are prebuilt kernels like kernel26-pf available in private repos.

  • How Do I Always Boot From An External Drive

I successfully installed Mac OS X 10.4.8 on an external hard drive. It boots successfully into OS X, but only if you press option on boot and select the drive or if you boot from the drive inside my Mac Mini and go to startup disk and select the external. Is there any way to just always boot from the external drive without doing anything? Thanks in advance for all of your help.
Mac Mini PowerPC Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If booting from a cold start doesn't work but restarting after selecting the drive does work, then most likely the drive isn't ready when the Mac is doing the cold boot.
Try turning the drive on several seconds before turning on the Mac.

  • Can you use a USB ext hard drive to boot from clone image?

I am not concerned about speed as much as having some kind of external drive to copy clone image to from my MacBook Pro.  I know with older Macs you used to have to use Firewire connections for the Macs to boot from the external drives.  I thought I saw something that said you now could also use USB.  I'm pretty sure my MacBook Pro 17 (June 2009) has USB 2.0 version ports, so should I be able to do this?  I know firewire would be faster but this is only for emergencies and until I could get my internal drive replaced.  Also, any suggestions on brands (WD, Seagate, OWC) would be useful.

Yes, hold option booting from USB cloned boot drives work.
Although FireWire 800 is faster as you already know.
As always check to make sure you can.
Another secret, Mac's can be option/c booted off burned ISO of PartedMagic cd's too.
What's nice about this little gem, the whole Linux operating system loads into RAM and you can copy files from the non-boooting Mac's internal hard drive to a external drive, of nearly ANY format.
You can also burn disks, as the PartedMagic cd spits out after loading.
And you can get on the internet, and do malware scans and a lot of other niffty things.

  • Optical drive trashed and MB Pro will not boot from USB image

    Hello,
New here but I have searched and tried all I know to get this MBP working right again. My disk drive is trashed and has been for some time now, this is why I have a bootable version of Snow Leopard on an 8G flash drive. When my MBP began acting funny recently and I went to disk utility to verify permissions and the disk. Both failed = must boot from disk to repair, thus my issue. For some reason by MBP will not boot from the usb image I have used previously??? Pressing C or Option during startup does not work. If I press Option, I only get the harddrive option, C yields nothing and the computer boots normally.
Please!! let me know how / what you would do to resolve this. I don't understand why I have previously been able to boot from this same file on the same drive previously to repair my disk / permissions but cannot do so now. FWIW, I tried placing the file (OSX) on my external HDD to boot from, this did not work either (USB HDD).
Thank you in advance for your input!!

It isn't clear what you mean about your HD being trashed or which disk (HD or USB drive) you are trying to repair, but either way you need to start up from your Snow Leopard installer DVD & instead of installing anything go to the Utilities menu & run Disk Utility from there to repair either or both of the disks.

  • Boot from Silicon Image 3114

Is it possible to boot from a SATA DVD Drive (Plextor 716SA) using the Silicon Image SATA ports (5-8) rather than the nVidia ones (1-4)?
I tried it, and the drive/port does appear in the boot menu and I can select it. For some reason, it doesn't even boot from it. Is it supposed to work? Did someone else get it to work?

  • Booting from disk image of iMac, off external, w/ MacBook..am I the 1st ?

    Hi there,
I'm currently between iMacs. Apple is graciously replacing my troubled early `06 / 20" Intel iMac ( which I FedEx'd out on 3/1/07 ) w/ a current model ( which is in the brink of shipping to me ). This one I've upgraded to 24 " / 750 GB on the HD.
In the meantime, The LaCie external that I've been cloning to for months is what I'm currently booting from w/ my Intel MacBook.
All 3rd party apps seem flawless, aside from slower processing of course.
But the Apple Tech I was just on w/ for 90 min. had not heard of this particular useage , and certainly couldn't troubleshoot possible results when i bring the user folder over to the new iMac.
Have been an uninformed dunderhead here ?, or as anyone else done the same. . . .similar even !?
    _TIA_

    Hi DmR of AtoZ,
the scenario of using the migration manager to transfer your data and applications from the external firewire drive to the new hard disk DOES work perfectly - I did it several times. However, it will only work if you have a bootable system on that external drive (which you do if I understood your previous posts).
The "drag&drop" approach does NOT work unless you move every single document. You CANNOT transfer a user folder by drag&drop (in fact you can but it is an extremely complicated procedure that involves lots of hacking in Terminal).

  • Can I boot from an image (*.iso) file?

I have XP Pro and OSX on my MBP using bootcamp only (not parallels or fusion). I can boot in linux from a CD when I initiate bootcamp (option key on startup). Can I locate the image from the CD on my computer and boot without the CD (and if so where do I put the file)? I want to use triple boot now to add Linux, but don't really want to repartition for it. If there was an easy tool to put an additional 10G partition for Linux I would do that.
    Thanks

How can you have a partition for Linux without a partition? You do not want to repartition but yet you want a new partition. Have you really thought out what you want?

  • [MOOT] UEFI USB Install (from 201306 image) - blank screen during boot

I am trying to install Arch Linux on a Lenovo ThinkPad T431s.
I created a bootable UEFI USB disk image following the instructions on the wiki.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UE … B_from_ISO
Attempting to boot from this image I get to a screen that looks like:
Arch Linux archiso x86_64 UEFI USB
    UEFI Shell x86_64 v1
    UEFI Shell x86_64 v2
After selecting the first option, I get a blank screen.
This appears to be the same (or very similar) to the following issues:
    [1] https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151599
    [2] https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=158530
    As suggested by
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide#Preparation
I tried appending a number of things to the initrd line
    nomodeset
    video=SVIDEO-1:d
    i915.modeset=0
with no success (the blank screen was exactly the same).
Some posts in thread [2] indicated that booting in legacy bios mode worked.  I created a new disk image (again following the wiki instructions: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … ion_Media) and was able to confirm that I could successfully boot from this other image after switching into legacy mode.
In thread [1], there was the suggestion to go into a UEFI shell and try a command like
    Shell > fs0:
    FS0:\ > cd \arch\boot\x86_64
    FS0:\arch\boot\x86_64\ > vmlinuz archisobasedir=arch archisolabel=ARCH_201306 initrd=\arch\boot\x86_64\archiso.img
which I did.  After pressing enter nothing happened (the screen did not go blank, all the text remained, no messages appeared).
Eventually in that same thread, a workaround was suggested in this post.  I have not tried this because I was unable to understand what exactly was being done, both because of the terse nature of the post and the fact that the referenced article is not in a language which I read (and google translate did not make it clear enough).  I was unable to evaluate whether that was a sensible thing to do.
    Now, finally, the questions
Firstly, does anyone have any suggestions about how to solve or troubleshoot my blank screen issue?
If not, does anyone have an opinion about which of the workarounds (switching into legacy mode or the one that I don't quite understand yet) would be better?  I am not planning to dual boot the system, so I do not need to use UEFI to be win8 friendly, etc.

Neri, did you get any further with this? I just got my own Thinkpad Yoga and am facing the same problems. Everything works fine in legacy Boot but the screen stays black on UEFI boot regardless of the known workarounds.
might it help to first install using legacy boot and later on convert to UEFI?
Not really with Arch directly anyways. What you can do is:
    1. Use Fedora 20 USB to boot the sucker up
    2. Use Archlinux-bootstrap install (download expand etc)
    3. Use refind as the bootmanager seems to solve the dual boot issues
ATM i'm fighting a mkinitcpio segfault. But that is after the installation was basically successful.  It would be nice if we can find a way to fix the install medium ...
    EDIT:
All sorted out. Unfortunately you'll have to bypass the Archlinux Install medium and resort to the fedora 20 installer. I used the XFCE4
    version for a smaller download.
Here are the basic steps for a Dual-Boot setup:
In windows (Disk Management) truncate your C: Drive.  I ended up making basically what will became /dev/sda4 smaller and didn't not
touch any partition or free space before that. Here's the final Layout:
    /dev/sda:
        empty space
    1. recovery partition
    2. ESP
    3. reserved
    4. windows
    5. Linux Root
    6. Linux home
    7. Swap
The installation happened from within Fedora Live using an Archlinux Boot strap image according to the Wiki for installing from an
existing Linux and the Wiki Installation Guide.  I mounted /dev/sda2 (aka. the existing ESP partition) as /boot and installed refind
according to the wiki. Please note, when you install Arch through the archlinux bootstrap method make sure you  pacman -S archlinux-keyring
in the bootstrap chroot first before you run the pacstrap command - it will accelerate the process tremendously!

  • Yoga 2 won't boot from upgraded ssd

Hi, I've successfully installed an M.2 SSD in my yoga 2 and cloned my start-up disk to it as i want the new drive to hold my windows install.
I changed the boot orderin BIOS to the ssd but that didn't work. I think because there was an option that enabled always booting from UEFI first. Since the ssd is only listed under legacy I changed it to boot from legacy first.
However now when I try to boot I just get some text about asix usb dongle which i'm afraid I don't understand. Presumably it's trying to boot from usb but I cant figure out why this might be. Any ideas how I can get this to work.
    Thanks in advance

  • Mac doesn't boot from start volume - blinking folder with question mark

    Hi,
my iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.6 issn't booting anymore from the Hard Drive. It shows a blinking folder with a question mark. After starting, before the folder appears, I hear a two or three times "clack" sound with a following silent speed down of a fan.
So I started from the installation DVD. On the "Choose Startup Disk" Menu there appears only the DVD and network. In Terminal by using "df" i only see my external Hard Disk, the DVD, and some /private/var folders. By listing the "/Volumes" directory only the external disk and the DVD appear.
I tried to restore a Time Machine backup from the external disk. After choosing the backup in the dialog "Select for Destination" it says "Searching for disks" but it doesn't find any after waiting some minutes. It also shows "This disk does not have enough space to restore your system" but there issn't any disk selected.
For me it looks like the Hard Drive with my system is dead. Does anybody has another idea what I can try?

unfortunately I can't start the single user mode. It is always booting from the installation DVD. I tried mouse clicked at boot to eject it, but it doesn't work. Also I can't come to the Startup Volume menu by holding the option key. I always come to the installation menu. There I can't eject the disk from Disk Utility, because it is working on it. I also can't eject it using the eject key on the keyboard in the Startup Disk menu. From the Terminal I can't access my Hard Disk from /Volumes and therefore also can't access my user's home directory.

  • How do you boot from IDE3 RAID

I have just installed a new HD on IDE3, no issues getting the bios to recognize it. However if there is a bootable HD in IDE1 it will boot from there and not from IDE3, regardless of what I do. I have tried in the BIOS disabling all boot devices and to boot from HDD-0/3, but it always boots from IDE1.
I think this is a BIOS glitch as there sould be a boot from RAID controller option.

    First, the system details:
    K7N2G-ILSR, BIOS rev. 1.3
        BIOS/video caching options left disabled,
after finding out the HARD way
    2 x Mushkin PC3200 256K DDR (Promo Dual Pack)
6-2-2-2.0, 2.7V (as sugg. by Mushkin)
    AMD Athlon 900MHz non-XP (100MHz FSB)
        No overclocking yet
    IDE1 master: Maxtor 20GB ATA66
    IDE1 slave : Maxtor 34GB ATA66
    IDE2 master: Plextor DVD+RW
IDE2 slave : Plextor CD-RW (later, with longer cable)
    IDE3 single: WD 120GB ATA100
    Intel Winmodem, PCI slot 1
Leadtek TV2000 XP Deluxe tuner, PCI slot 5
Koolance Exos water-cooling system, cooling CPU, chipset/video, and WD HDD.
This is an upgrade of an aging GigaByte system.  I had Windows 2000 installed on the 20GB drive, and VERY heavily customized.  What I wanted to do was set up the WD drive as a RAID array (with eventual plans to buy another drive and mirror it), and then use PartitionMagic to copy/move the original partition from the 20GB drive to the new WD drive, and then remove or reformat the old drives as "archive" drives.  I desperately need to carry over the original Windows 2000 and installed software, or I face literally months of trying to reinvent all the customizations (and some maybe never: I've forgotten how to get rid of the stupid "assistant" in Outlook 98).
The problem: Windows 2000 is now seeing the WD drive as physical disk 3, which will f**k up the boot loader in the copied partition, which expects to be on the first partition of the first physical disk.
In the meantime, I've been forced to do a new Win2K install to the WD drive (seen as E:), with the original install on the 20GB drive (still seen as C:) so that I can reach the 'Net and things like this forum.  :-/
The original install shows up in the boot loader now as an option, but of course isn't bootable with the MSI board yet because all the old GigaByte drivers etc. are still being used.  I can fix that eventually, but then there's this problem with the physical ordering of the disks.
I can't simply move the WD drive to IDE1 and move the original bootable disk elsewhere, because then the original won't be bootable (different physical disk), and I wouldn't be able to later create a mirrored array with the WD drive.
I need to have the motherboard/BIOS report the RAID array as physical drive "zero"; is there a way I can make that happen, or is there another way to do what I want that I'm not seeing?
