Always choose iTunes library at startup

We have 4 itunes libraries on one Windows PC.  Is there a way to setup iTunes so that it always asks the user to choose a library (without pressing shift)?  Otherwsie, it is too easy for one user to open iTunes and not realize that he/she is using another persons library.  We have Windows setup to auto logon, so we're all using the same Windows profile.

  • Applescript and "Choose iTunes Library"

    Hello,
I'm trying to write an applescript to automate the "Choose iTunes Library" process that happens when you hold down the option key while opening iTunes manually. Is there an applescript command that controls which library iTunes opens at startup?
Maybe something like "tell applications "iTunes" to activate with library (path to library file)"? Is that even a scriptable feature of iTunes?
    Thanks,
    Nate

Well the problem has only occurred one time since I have upgrades from 8.2.1 to 9.0.1. Plus I learned that every month week or two, I probably need to verify and repair permissions on the hard drive on Mac OS X. iTunes 9.0.1 has fixed the problem and 8.0 had a lot of bugs and problems that thankfully was fixed.

  • ITunes sometimes won't open and displays "Choose iTunes Library" error

I have the latest current update of iTunes 8.2.0 for Mac OS X v10.4. Since the introduction of iTunes 8, from time to time, I get an error message where iTunes doesn't even load at all, and the software wants to "Choose iTunes Library" or quit. So I simply quit iTunes, then restart iTunes, and the problem is taken care of but this happens a lot, and I haven't had any problems with earlier versions of iTunes before the 8.0 update. One of the things I would like to see in the next big update to iTunes is some advancements in Cover Flow, like when browsing through Cover Flow on an iPod touch, you're able to click on the album artwork and then the list of songs are displayed. I wish that Cover Flow on iTunes had the same type of user control as Cover Flow on the iPhone OS.

  • ITunes- always gives "iTunes Library.itl is locked..."-- HELP!!!

Everytime i click on iTunes on my desktop (PC Windows), the user agreement window appears and i have to click on "Agree"... then this message appears:
"The iTunes Library.itl is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
That's exactly what it says! I dont know what it means!!!
    Please HELP!!!

Same problem happened to me. Go to Music (on windows). Then to iTunes folder. Right click on "iTunes Library". Properties. Then click on security tab. Where it says "To change Permissions, click edit" Click Edit. Then under "Permissions for system" Check the box for Full Control ALLOW. Click Apply. Then run iTunes it should work.

  • HT1347 Windows: Is there a script for adding a folder to an iTunes Library at startup?

Has anyone ever created a script to have "watched folders" functionality in iTunes?
Three out of the four users in my household share the same iTunes library folder, which resides on a separate hard drive (along with the iTunes Library of the 4th user). I thought this would be the easiest way for all the music purchased for our family to be shared among us, while not sharing playlists. I thought iTunes would, automatically and routinely, scan and categorize the files in the designated iTunes Media Folder.
However, now whenever someone adds music through their account, the songs will not show up in another user's library (even though both accounts use the same iTunes Media Folder). The only way to have an up-to-date library, is to go to "File" > "Add Folder to Library..." and add the iTunes Media folder each time a user starts their iTunes instance.
I'm new to iTunes (moving over from WMP and VLC).
Just in case anyone cares... I'm using:
    - iTunes 10.7.0.21
    - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (with Service Pack 1)
    - We have an iPhone and an iPod touch in the household

  • ITunes crashes on startup (7.4.3.1 and previous versions on Vista 32Bit)

Deleting/moving the itunes library files (iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library.itl) makes it work fine which leads me to believe it crashes when loading the playlist. But not always!
iTunes crashes on startup on my vista 32bit.
Even after I upgraded to 7.4.3.1 and reinstalled iTunes several times.
I've also tried reinstalling quicktime and selecting "Repair" to no avail.
Running it in XP2 compatibility mode doesn't help.
    Disabling Aero doesn't help.
Whether or not my iPhone is plugged in or not seems to make no difference.

  • Moving iTunes library to an external drive.

My startup disk is full so I would like to move my iTunes library to an external drive to fee up space.  What is the best way to do this?

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
    3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
    4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
    5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
    6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

  • Itunes library wont open

I have been using itunes on my pc for quite a while now and it has always worked great. Now all of a sudden when i try to open it up it says "The iTunes library.itl is locked, on a locked disc, or you do not have permission to write this file. I never changed anything it just started doing this one day, any help would be appreciated.

The locked library problem is often due to a registry problem, see this Apple article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302398
You may be able to do a quick work around that does not fix the problem but gets you going quickly.
Open iTunes with the shift key held down. When asked to choose a library, navigate to your iTunes folder and choose iTunes Library.itl.

  • How do I save my iTunes library so I can open it again when I switch libraries?

When I switch libraries itunes won't open the folder that contains all my music from my library. It will only open the previous saved versions. How do I create a new saved version with all the music from my library?

Itunes always saves the library when it closes and will use that library when it next opens unless you change it.
    To switch libraries:
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose or create a library. Select  "Choose" and navigate to the location of your other library and choose iTunes library.itl.

Once you get a complete iTunes folder on the external drive, start iTunes with the option/alt key held down and select the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.  You will also need to do this with your main computer or the libraries will become unsynchronized.
Alternatively you can make a separate library using the same media on the second computer. Start as you have been doing, let iTunes create a new, blank library file which will be on hte internal drive, set the media folder location in preferences to be the one on the external drive, then add the files to the new iTunes library. Unless you are a super-organized individual, or you don't care if your libraries do not have the same content, you are better off using a single library file that is on the external, not setting up separate library files.

Holding down the shift key while iTunes is opening. That will bring up the 'choose iTunes library' dialog. Select 'Choose LIbrary' from the choices and navigate to your music folder and iTunes music folder.

  • Trouble uploading my iTunes library to external hard drive.

I have a iMac OS X Version 10.6.8 and am trying to upload my iTunes library to an Seagate GoFlex Home 2TB external hard drive. I can only upload one song at a time. Very frustrating. When I try to "drag and drop" multiple songs/albums, it tells me I need Java plugin version 1.5 or higher. But I've got that and it still won't let me "drag and drop." Advice?

Presumably you have formatted the Seagate as HFS Extended (Journaled)?

  • How to get itunes library from external drive to new computer

i recently purchased a new computer w/the windows vista platform. there were posts regarding how to transfer the library w/playlists on this board, which i followed to the point of hitting shift while opening itunes, and choosing a library. however, when selecting such from my external drive, which has the itl and xml on it as well as the itunes music folder, it gives me an error noting it is locked or that i dont have write permission to use it. my external drive on my old computer was the G drive, now it is the F drive on new one. can anyone please advise what to do other than copy all music over and have to completely recreate all playlists?

polydorus, this was the response/post that i found and it was posted by sweepea on 9/4/2007. and all my music is now from the external drive to the itunes music folder on my laptop and it let me keep all my playlists. thank you again for your help!
I had that problem too. I tried to remove iTunes from my computer and then download it again, but that did not make any difference. Then I tried polydorus' answer ("starting iTunes with the shift key held down, when asked to choose a library, navigate to your iTunes folder and choose iTunes Library.itl"), but that did not work either and that same message about the library being locked appeared again.
Then I had a brainwave. I deleted that iTunes library.itl file. (To find it, go to My documents, then My Music, then iTunes, and there is the itunes library file). I now tried to open iTunes by clicking on the iTunes icon on my desktop, nothing happened, as if I had not clicked on it at all. I restored the file from the recycling bin to where it was before. But that also returned me to where I had been before, i.e. I got that locked-library message again. So I deleted that file again. Then I tried right-clicking on the iTunes icon. On the little menu that appeared, I clicked 'Open' and hey presto, suddenly the iTunes set-up assistant appeared and everything went smooth from then on. When I checked, there was a file called iTunes library.itl again and this one worked OK.
By the way, I did not lose any of my music downloads or podcasts when I deleted that file, so it's definitely worth a try.
