Always get boot menu at startup

Hi
I'm trying to dual-boot os9.2.2 and osx 10.4 but its' a hassle having to hold the option key at startup to choose the OS. Is there a way (possibly with the boot-args nvram setting) to get the boot selection menu at every startup?
Thanks!
I appreciate you taking your time to help me!

Hi, PowerBookDude12 -
Not that I'm aware of. You should only need to do that when you want to switch the boot OS; by default, if you hold down no keys at startup the machine should boot to the last OS set in PRAM, which is set by Startup Disk (in OS 9, Apple Menu > Control Panels > Startup Disk; in OSX, Apple Menu > System Preferences > Startup Disk) or Startup Manager (which is what you get by holding down Option at startup).
You can also use the Startup Disk to set the OS choice for the next startup (applicable to a cold start or a restart).
There is a way you can remove some of the need to hold down Option at startup. Set OS 9 as the boot volume in Startup Disk in both OS 9 and OSX. Then, whenever you boot or restart, if you do nothing the machine will boot into OS 9, but if you hold down the X key from the time the startup chimes sound the machine will boot into OSX instead. Holding down the X key is a one-event instruction; it does not alter the OS choice set in PRAM.
On the other hand, if it is your custom to alternate OS's at every boot, then you can automate it somewhat by setting OS 9 as the boot volume in OSX's Startup Disk, and OSX as the boot volume in OS 9's Startup Disk. This choice of settings will cause the machine to boot into the other OS whenever you restart or boot, unless you intercede during startup.

  • How to get iDVD Menu to startup?

I created an iMovie, sent it to iDVD to create a menu for the movie. When I place the dvd into the player to watch it on my TV, the movie just starts and doesn't show the menu I created with iDVD. Any suggestions on how to fix this or why its happening?
    Thank you

    Go to the Map mode
and make sure there's no item in the Autoplay bin at the left:
If there is drag whatever's in the bin out and try again.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Have to Startup from HP Boot Menu

My p6740f (Windows 7) will not boot unless I hit ESC at HP blue menu to get Boot Menu and select the drive with OS (factory location). It runs normally. If I don't do that, get black screen and hear rapid high beeps.

Try entering BIOS setup by tapping the F10 key.On the boot selection ensure that hdd is first boot device.

  • U310 encrypted w/ PGP WDE can't get to BIOS or boot menu

The Lenovo U310 Touch was encrypted using PGP Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.2. Everything seemed to work fine until I used a windows 7 repair CD to restore an older system image back to this drive.
Now when the ideapad starts up, I still get a symentec encryption username and passphrase screen. When enter in the username and passphrase, I get past it but I see Windows Boot Manager, Windows failed to start. Statux 0xc000000f and then anything that I do, I get thrown back to the PGP screen, and this error screen.
If I use Fn+f12, or Fn+f2, or Fn+f11, I again and thrown back to the PGP screen.
If I shut the system off, and start it with the novo button, I see a menu that says Normal startup, bios setup, boot menu, system recovery. All 4 options return me back to the PGP Encryption screen, and then back to Windows Failed to start.
How can I get to the BIOS, or sys recovery, or even boot from external CD drive so I can get a clean build of an OS?

Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llll, the thing was booting so fast I never caught the real problem.  (Almost ashamed, since I used to do this in a former life 20 years ago).  The keyboard was DOA.
I finally caught it when I quit looking at the screen trying to syncronize hitting keys.  No lights flashed on the keyboard.
Since I don't have spare anything here, I took it down to my friends office, plugged into his old (WIN  98!!) machine and got a "bad or missing keyboard" at boot.  Off to Wally World for a terrible, cheap HP KB that got it going.
Once I got everything going, I now have a new issue (hijack my own thread).  BSOD with two different errors.
Thanks to all.  It was one of those "until 4 A.M." things for me.

  • Duplicate Startup Disks in boot menu

I have two ssd drives, one in optical bay and one in standard hd bay. I have a clone of Yosemite on both drives. When I boot and gold down option key to bring up boot menu I am seeing duplicate entries for one of my startup disks. So instead of two startup disks to boot into, I see three. How would I
    go about removing the duplicate?

Thanks. I had actually tried that with the boot mode set at UEFI and it didn't work, but I gave it another try set at legacy and it works fine.
The documentation for this seems confusing to me, though. Isn't this RAID card considered a mezzanine card? The documentation here says to enable the onboard controller to get a mezzanine card to work:

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

I installed Canon Pixma MG5520 on win 7, since, always get "canon quick menu has stopped working" how do I fix please?

    Hi thaluza,
We can see if there are files in a folder called TWAIN_32 other than those related to the printer that may be causing a conflict with the Quick Menu. If there are, we can temporarily remove the files to see if this will resolve the issue.
To move the non-Canon Twain files from the Twain_32 folder, please follow these steps:
    1. Go to Computer / My Computer and locate the C: drive, then double-click on it to open.
    2. Locate the WINDOWS folder, then double-click to open it.
    3. Locate the TWAIN_32 folder, then double-click to open it.
    4. Inside of the TWAIN_32 folder, you will see a folder for your printer as well as a WIATWAIN.DS file. If there are other files in that folder, you will want to move them to another location, preferably your Desktop by doing the following:
4-1. Click on each of the other items in the folder other than the the WIATWAIN.DS file and the folder for your printer to select them. You will want to hold the the CTRL key on your keyboard while selecting each of the items until all of the items except for the two referenced above are selected. Please be sure to leave the WIATWAIN.DS file and folder related to your printer inside of the TWAIN_32 folder.
4-2. With all of the items you want to move selected, please go to the EDIT menu and select the CUT option.
4-3. Go to your Desktop (main window that comes up when you start Windows with all of the icons on it) and right-click your mouse in any blank area, then choose the PASTE option. The items you selected from the TWAIN_32 folder should appear on the Desktop.
    5. Try to launch the Quick Menu again.
    Hope this helps!

  • W520: Unable to boot from USB - device does not show up in boot menu

I have a W520, and I am trying to boot from a USB key. The USB key is bootable, my old T61p boots just fine from it, and so does another computer I tried.
The W520, after pressing F12 on power on, immediately shows the Intel PXE agent and then some blue boot menu, which only shows hard drive and LAN as available boot options.
I have tried all three USB ports but the results are always the same - the USB device does not show up. Is there any trick or BIOS setting to enable boot from USB?
    Thanks,
        CS

    Hello Neil
Thanks for getting back to me
The issue was that the usb drives were disabled in the bios from the  Startup menu.
    To enable
    1. Enter bios
    2. Select boot
    3. If you do not see the boot device you require use the down cursor key until the "Excluded from boot priority order" becomes visible.
    4. Select the device you require (in my case USB HDD)
    5. Save and exit.
You can now boot from a usb stick and install the Linux distro of your choice :-)
    Cheers

  • Windows 7 hangs from boot menu

    Hi,
my Windows 7 partition refuses to start from boot menu, system just hangs and does nothing. I've not made any changes to the disk layout, only thing I can think of is the upgrade to 10.9.4 which probably changed the recovery partition.
    History:
    - iMac Mavericks 10.9.3 with boot camp 5.1.2 and Windows 7, used to start into Windows by pressing Alt on start up, then reboot from Windows menu or from Windows boot camp application into OS X and back without problems
    - installed the 10.9.4 Build 13E28 upgrade some days ago
    - Change today: rebooted from the boot camp system tray app into OS X, worked without a problem
    - reboot from OS X into boot menu, select Windows 7 partition, system hangs
I've found this thread, describing a similar problem Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition I think, however since my Index output only lists 4 partitions I think my problem might be a bit different.

I guess something mixed up the MBR since I would have expected line 4 of the fdisk output to show something 'Windows' like instead of HPFS/QNX/AUX, but even if that is correct, the question is how can the boot problem be fixed?
The Windows partition is accessible from OS X, so copying the data is not a problem if everything else fails. As far as I remember, the boot camp version in windows is 3.3 (it's an older iMac model).
GDisk is available, command line not a problem, if you need any further info let me know, any help appreciated.
    thanks,

    Hi,
    > Does the Bootcamp partition show up in Finder and can you see files in it?
Yes, the partition shows up in Finder and I can see and copy files.
    > In Disk Utility, does the Bootcamp partition report as NTFS?
Yes it does, "Get Info" from Finder also reports it as a NTFS volume.
    > Do you have any third party NTFS drivers?
Yes I have, Paragon NTFS tools.
    > If you hold the ALT key can you boot into Windows?
No, system just hangs and needs to be rebooted via power-off.
    > If you came from 10.9.3 to 10.9.4, the Recovery HD should have existed under 10.9.3.
Yes it did, I did a clean install from USB media when Mavericks came out, the Recovery HD is also visible - and has been - in the boot menu.
    > The one strange part is that your volume says "Windows 7". Were any diskutil commands run to change volume names?
No, just a left click on the Volume Name in Finder and then change Bootcamp to Windows 7.
