Always in discover?

Is the iPhone suppose to ALWAYS be searching? I sync up my device, and is still seArching for more. My old phones you manually search for devices. So does it ever stop searching after sync??

after thinking about this... im wondering if this is like the refrigerator light... i mean, we open the door, and the lights on. but who actually crawls inside their fridge to see if it goes off when we close the door? we just assume it does.
so i'm thinking maybe its only in discover mode when i have the bluetooth screen up... cause i have no way of knowing if the little 'pin wheel searching' symbol is still 'searching' after i close out of that screen... hmmmmm...

  • MBP performance very bad

So I bought my MBP 13" this summer of 09. It's been less than 6 months, and my computer's performance has been pretty bad (since the beginning) compared to my white macbook that I bought in summer 08 and the white macbook that my dad bought afterwards with the nvidia 9400m graphics card.
    What is my problem?
My problem is that the boot-up is extremely slow (compared to the macbooks). It was fine when I first got it, but just randomly it's giving trouble. I have itunes helper, growl, and stickies running on bootup (just like my old macbook).
2nd problem is that I am seeing the rainbow ball more often for simple processes, like opening safari or an application like itunes. When I play games like call of duty 4 (on the default optimal settings) it plays fine and then it randomly starts lagging and keeps lagging unless you shut down the game and restart it. At first I thought the lag occurred when there were too many activities going on, but it should stop lagging afterwards. Nope! it still lags. In fact, it just starts lagging randomly even if nothing heavy is going on (like i'm just walking to get to the next checkpoint). The same thing happens to me when I play Farcry 2 on my windows partition. It would play fine and then randomly it would lag horribly.
    So what have I done?
First, I cleared some space in my disk (I have 160 gig hdd - 30 of which is for Windows XP) so that I had around 30 gigs free on my Mac's partition. It still did not solve the problem.
Next I backed everything up using Time-machine, and formatted my mac's partition and installed Snow-leopard 10.6.2 on it from Leopard 10.5.8.
    Results:
Bootup still slow (tiny bit faster)
Game still lags randomly (and stays laggy even when things "calm" down)
Performance slightly better, but still not good.
Can anyone guide me to what might be the source of the problem and if possible a solution please?

One of the first and easiest diagnostics to perform if something has changed with your computer, and that is what you complaint is as far as I interpret it, is to log in as another User. Create a new User Account and do this. This lets you know if your problem is system wide or user wide.
Also, and first actually, Repair Permissions and Repair Disk (at least verify) using Disk Utility. It costs nothing and might solve your problem.
If you used to have enough RAM you still do as RAM does not diminish. This of course assumes you are not using application that are significantly more RAM intensive than you used to use.
Leaving 10% of your hard drive free is only required if your hard drive is 20GB in total size. In other words, the amount you need free is not a function of the total amount that exists, it is a function of what your computer needs for swap space and that is a function of the particular apps you are running at any given time. After a clean restart, launch Activity Monitor and click the System Memory tab. See how much green unused RAM there is. Note that there will be little if any page outs. Keep Activity Monitor open and position its window such that you can keep an eye on the page outs. Go about your computing activity and note if or under what circumstances the page outs increase in a significant way.
Ideally you want zero page outs but realistically a few, such as a very small percentage of the page ins is acceptable. The thing is, if your RAM is too little it will show up as excessive page outs. If they are few, and brief, then adding more RAM will only save you the time that it took for the page outs to be incurred.
Unless I missed it, you did not mention how long it takes your machine to boot. That would be very useful information. Also mention how long you recall it requiring back when it was faster.
My suspicion is that you have some unwanted application or process going on taking up CPU time. This can be discovered in Activity under %CPU "All Processes" not My Processes. Nothing should be using double digit percentage except the app you are running and that depends entirely on the particular app.
Unlike a Windows PC you do not have a registry that is constantly filling up with garbage. You do not have a disk that is constantly getting more fragmented and needs tending. You do not have anything that should be constantly getting worse and slowing your machine, unless your hard drive is very very near full. I have tested this a number of times and you can fill the drive to the brim before it gives any measurable slow down with the apps I routinely run. Any slow down problem on the Mac can almost always be discovered and remedied without re-installs or any other extreme measures.

I just "upgraded" my iPhone with the new software. As a low vision person, your phone was always previously helpful. I now discover that I cannot use the phone easily. The font has been changed to a very narrow typeface and the greyscale has been altered to reduce contrast. The background is now grey as well rather than white. The accessibility options permit only three choices. First, increase type size. With the the low greyscale, thin typeface, increasing type size makes it HARDER to read. There is no option for contrast enhancement. Third, the background switch options suffers from the same deficit as the white background. The third choice is to enhance brightness but without the option to change contrast, this is useless. Am I missing something? Can this be fixed? How? When? Are you planning a similar negative "update"/change to other devices?

I am having the same problem. I have gone through every setting, set the bold font, contrast, larger font....everything I could find in any post to try and help - and between the new color scheme that makes it virtually impossible to use the pictures of my grandchildren as background (the picture colors now become the theme colors - which now match the colors of many of the "flat" icons...) I am finding the phone very difficult to use--espeically things like the calendar which has now become very hard to "see" and use. If I can't revert this thing to iOS6, I may have to get a different phone.

I publish a 41mb InDesign newsletter monthly into interactive pdf. It always becomes a file size of 4mb, 10% of original, when I save to pdf. This month my newsletter is 41mb and it drops to 11mb, 25% of original. I have re-sized all pictures, deleted pages separately, have gotten the file size down to 16mb and it drops to 7mb, 45% of original.
I have gone back and saved Feb and March and it saves to 10% of original, as it did before, and I use the same mechanism to save now.
I have gone to Acrobat Pro and optimized down to 8.8mb, but the quality is not acceptable.
What other variable is there that I haven't discovered?

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Why I always have to go back to Arch?

    Hi there!
A little story about me. I discovered Linux a long ago (6-7 years ago) while I was interested in computer security and hacking, and got a hint the 1337s uses Linux (or any other unix based system), so I decided to try it (I choose for Linux because it was the most popular *nix based system atm).
My romance with Linux started with Mandrake (today Mandriva) and included distributions like Red hat (it wasn't enterprise oriented that time and AFAIK there were no Fedora yet), and the lovely Gentoo. Its funny tough, Ubuntu wasn't that popular at the time (I even remember how I was on an open lecture in University about open source and Linux, and I got a free CD of Ubuntu and no body heard about it before )
Anyway its stopped there for few years and I got back to Linux about 2 years ago, with Ubuntu on my desktop machine.
My nature is to discover and be different. If everybody uses Ubuntu, I must use something else (even now, I'm on Xubuntu).
This nature lead me to replace Ubuntu with Arch. This was the first time I encountered a very similar distribution to Gentoo, that were optimized to i686 and did not require you to compile every package (for instance I installed Gentoo like 2-3 times from scratch [those were beautiful Friday evenings-nights :romantic-smiley:]) and I remember how compiling Xorg took me hours (and when I say hours I mean hours, something like 6-8 hours).
Then I got back to windows since my old PC died and I got a new one and a laptop.
This leads us to nearly today. Right now I'm using my laptop as my main computer at home and at work (the desktop PC had a motherboard issue that was replaced under warranty. While they were fixing it, I switched to use my laptop).
I started with Ubuntu, simply because it works! But I hated Untiy and I switched to Xubuntu. But you do remember my nature right? This lead me to switching to Arch.
A few days of configurations and I got stable up and running system. Then I came to work and had some issues (especially with keyring) and they blocked me from working, instead I needed to fix them. Then I said "This is it! I need a machine that works!".
I removed Arch, installed Xubuntu and promised my self never to do this pointless Distro_name->Arch->Distro_name path, because well, it ends the same way always.
But you do remember my nature right? So right now I'm standing in front of a decision whether to go back to Arch or not. I must say I really like the rolling release scheme, I'm in love with pacman (its a lot more superior than apt-get or yum IMHO), I like the way you can customize Arch.
But Archs customization is also its weak point, you have to devote hours or reading and configuring to get a stable and running system. And sometimes (especially if you use your laptop for work or for studies or both) you need to have a running system and you don't want to mess with cups just because its 2 A.M. and you need to print your project to submit it in 5 hours (yes you must take care of it at a lot earlier point than 5 hours before deadline )
Ubuntu is nice, but its bloated. It doesn't even give you the option to select what packages you want to install (unlike Fedora for example). Its comes with (IMHO) stupid meta packages like ubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop so its nearly impossible to try gnome3, xfce, openbox on the same system without breaking something.
Ubuntu simply works, but as soon as you need something deeper, you are screwed.
I don't really ask sort of a question here, but I know many of you use Arch (I'm on bbs.archlinux.org doh -.-' ) as your everyday system, so I would like to know how do you handle its configuration, what you do when something breaks and you don't have the time to fix it (you are at work, hitting the deadline of your university project or whatever). Maybe you will be able to convince me why I always want to get back to Arch and what I need to do to choose it as my the one and only distribution. Maybe you will be able to suggest me another distro that fits my needs. Or maybe you want to tell me how sucky I'm.
So simply go on and post, this is why I created this topic.
    Thanks you for your time

    tl;dr
But Archs customization is also its weak point, you have to devote hours or reading and configuring to get a stable and running system. That is the strong point. Arch's customisation allows me to use it on the craptop and on the desktop. I prefer to see it as an investment of time to get a system I want instead of one a developer thinks I want (don't get me wrong open source devs do an amazing job!)
Bloat is the price you pay to have a distro that works out of the box.
My arch setup is relatively simple, I set cron jobs to back up files with rsync and keep important config files backed up too. I am lucky by the fact I have a laptop I can use if the desktop breaks and vice versa but the sensible solution is to upgrade after work is done.
I keep coming back to arch because of pacman and the AUR. No package manager comes close.

  • I have an IPA2 wifi 3g working fine with wifi up for 3 monthes then from two weeks it get connection but after 1 minutes stop to serf/download with signal and connection always present. With the same router are still connected others 3 pc working!

    I all,
    the scenario is the following:
WIFI connection with TISCALI operator. Encryption made by WPA2 EAS with router SITECOM or tested also with another router DIGICOM with WPA TPK.
From December up to end of March the IPAD2 working perfectly serfing and downloading.
By two weeks it has a very strange behavour without have changed any configuration on IPAD or network:
with WIFI turned on it discover about 4 different ntw among them the mine, I successfully authenticate with psw the my ntw,
the IPAD2 start to run with Safari without problems, but after about 1 minutes, it stop to serf or download and answer that the Server cannot be reached or the page cannot be open, at the same time the signal is present on the icon of WIFI and it is strong.
This problem is systematic: If I dissasociate the ntw and then authenticate again I start to serf again for 1 minutes (more or less) and then it stops again, this occurs every time I authenticate the ntw after a disassociation.
I made some test changing the encryption from WPA2, WPA and also without encryption but the result was always the same, after about one minute the server seems to be for the IPAD2 no more reachable while the others PC and netbook connected to the same router continue to serf/download without problems!
I also tried to change the router with a DIGCOM that I did not use generally, but the behavour is always the same.
Since the IOS was the 4.3 revisin, I made the upgrade by means Itunes to IOS 5.1 succesfully installed.
But unfortunatelly all test repeted have had the same negative result with the same behavour!
Yesterday I tried to do the complete restore of the System but the tests had the same rsult.
I really don't know how to proceed, the problem started suddenly without any action from my side....is there someone that can help me?
    Thanks Massimo

  • Why is my page count always 1 (regardless of number of pages)?

I just created a new Numbers document. It has 3 pages.
In the footer I display (page number) of (page count).
    I would expect to see "1 of 3", "2 of 3", "3 of 3".
    What I get is "1 of 1", "2 of 1", "3 of 1".
What do I have to do to get the page count to count the number of pages?
    Thanks

Hello. I was searching the boards today, because I was having this same issue.  I couldn't figure out why when I chose Insert, Page Count in the footer, it was always coming up "1" - Yet, Insert, Page Number would be correct.  This is what I would get in footer:
Page 1 of 1, Page 2 of 1, Page 3 of 1, Page 4 of 1, etc.  Should have been: Page 1 of 5, etc.
Not finding a "fix" here besides starting troubleshooting with creating a test User Account (which is okay), I decided to do some more troubleshooting first, and I discovered something.
I found my fix.  I don't know if it's what was happening for you, but this fixed it for me.
Insert the Page Count from the Menu in the footer.  Make sure the Inspector is open.  Go to the Sheet Section.  In the middle is a Page Options section.  For me, the "continue from previous sheet" was checked.  Instead, I checked the second option "Start at" and chose "1."  That worked for me.
I started this spreadsheet from a csv document, but I tried starting one from a blank template and "continue..." was also selected.  Seems like it's the default?
Hope this helps someone else who is having this issue.
    Have a great day!

  • How do you get the apple remote to STOP always launching iTunes????

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I have discovered a few annoyances. The biggest one is that the Apple remote is always launching iTunes when I use it. Even when the Finder is not the target app.
I have my entire Star Trek collection on a firewire drive, and I like using VLC to watch them because of the playlist feature. Every time I use the Apple remote to try to skip to the next episode, it launches iTunes and begins playing music. This NEVER happened before in Leopard or Tiger.
I have gone through the iTunes preferences and also looked for some obscure system preference to deal with this issue, but so far, no luck.
Again, the]is NEVER happened under previous operating systems, so I'm going to assume it's a glitch in Snow Leopard.
Does anyone know what's happening here??
    Help me obi-wan.

    HI,
Open System Preferences/Security and turn Disable remote control infrared receiver.
You may have to click the gold padlock icon to do this. You will be prompted for your
    Admin password.
Also, when you come across a "bug", report it to Apple.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
And it seems you are not alone...
    http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=64304
You can try to re "Pair' the remote also.
To pair an Apple Remote with your computer:
Hold the remote close to the computer (3 to 4 inches away) and point the remote at the front of the computer.
Press and hold both the Menu and Next buttons on the remote until the paired-remote icon appears on your screen (about 5 seconds).
    To unpair an Apple Remote:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security, and then click General.
Open the General pane of Security preferences
    Click Unpair.

  • How to dynamically discover runtime properties of app server within webapp

    Hi friends,
Does anyone know if the Servlet API provide any methods to dynamically discover app server runtime properties such as which http and https ports the server is listening at?
It's not the same as ServletRequest.getServerPort() which only give you back the port the incoming request comes from.
I want to be able to say redirect user requests to https, WITHOUT in advance knowledge of the https port configured for the app server, which means no hardcoding of the port number.
    Thanks very much for help.

You could always add a web resource collection to your web.xml and specify the transport guarantee to be integral.

  • Always fail to deploy to server when (Create a Simple EJB Session Bean )

    Hi,
I'm trying the "Oracle JDeveloper 11g Tutorials" - "Create a Simple EJB Session Bean", I just follow the instructions in that page. But when I tried to run it, it always failed. Can anyone help me to have a look. I paste the log below. thank you.
There's an error in the log "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: oracle.security.jps.wls.listeners.JpsApplicationLifecycleListener". but I don't know what's that meaning.

    Steve,
I'm facing the same issue as user#####.
Your workaround does not work ; when I deploy manuelly the ear file, with a new weblogic-application.xml, I get the same error.
    Does that happen a lot ? :p

  • Cover Flow doesn't alway work in finder windows...

    Hi,
I have several folders full of photos, most of them are .jpegs. When I open a folder in a finder window I have my standard views displayed at the top:(Icons/List / In columns / Cover Flow). When I click the cover flow button sometimes it will show my photos properly and other times it just shows a blank sheet with .jpeg written on it.
Any ideas why sometimes it work correctly and other times it doesn't??
    Thanks,
    Gary

I've noticed this occasionally myself, and discovered that there are actually two different problems. One, which is fixable, is that occasionally I run into folders where I get generic jpeg icons in all views, and recently figured out there is something peculiar about those files. In this case all views, all the time, fail to show a thumbnail. The fix is to select all the errant files, and only the errant files, in the folder, bring up the inspector (Command-Option-i), select the wee little multiple files icon at the top, and press Delete. Presto changeo the Finder will now draw the thumbs in Icon and Coverflow views.
The second problem is more perplexing: it seems as if Finder has simply gotten tired of drawing icons. When this happens I've always simply relaunched Finder by holding the Option key, click and hold on the Finder icon in the Dock, and then select Relaunch from the fly-out window. All windows close, the Desktop "blinks" and when you renavigate to the folder Finder draws the icons. Reminds me of an old-time radio with a loose connection that can be brought back to functionality by a quick sharp blow to the chassis...

  • Trying to catch on to using 'discover'

I am upgrading our Solaris C++ compilation system all the way from SolStudio v6 Update 2 on Solaris 8 to SolarisStudio 12.2 on Solaris 10. (About time, huh?) Things seem to be going well enough but am struggling with the included 'discover' tool. The documentation seems a bit short and its reported "errors" seem rather dubious - but, hey, you learn something every day (especially with C++ ... ;) )
    Suggestions would be appreciated.
Here is a rather abbreviate example of the type of oddity I am getting. I am writing a small application to test a class named CNCTimeStamp. The class has a fair number of features, but it can be boiled down to this
    nctimestamp.h
    class CNCTimeStamp {
    public:
      CNCTimeStamp();
      virtual ~CNCTimeStamp();
    protected:
      time_t m_timestamp;
      mutable struct tm* m_tm;
    }; // class CNCTimeStampnctimestamp.cpp
    CNCTimeStamp::CNCTimeStamp() :
         m_timestamp(0),
         m_tm(0)
         ::time( &m_timestamp );
} // CNCTimeStampWhen I build it, using dmake, I get
    berlin{devel}528: dmake test1
    dmake: defaulting to parallel mode.
See the man page dmake(1) for more information on setting up the .dmakerc file.

berlin{devel}529:All looks good so far. When I run "timetoy.disc", I get a multitude of "errors". The first is this, which shows enough in its source listing that you can see what's going on. My trouble is in grasping what an "SBR" is and how it would apply. Thoughts?
I tried this, btw, replacing the "CNCTimeStamp* start = new CNCTimeStamp();" with "CNCTimeStamp start;" to no avail. Same SBR errors. I make no claim to being an expert with C++, but all this seems over the top. Fortunately, I am wrong most of time. LOL

In the interest of helping out. I'll copy/paste here the makefile and source code. If it gets to be too long, I'll have to reply to this reply - and so on.
There are four pieces: makefile, timetoy.cpp, nctimestamp.h and nctimestamp.cpp. The goal of this exercise has been to port the code base -this C++ class, CNCTimeStamp, is merely a first piece - up to the current Solaris Studio 12.2 C++ environment. At this point I am only using the command-line interface (dmake, dbx, CC). I hope to get to solstudio and dbxtool soon -- they look great!
