Always in list view

When I double click the "Macintosh HD" icon, on desktop,  the window always appears in list view although I've selected icon view for this window. Can I fix this?
Thanks

Have you checked the box to set it to always show in icon view?
The system must write to that folder to set those parameters, so it could have a problem writing to that .DS_Store file. I'm also not sure if the .DS_Store file is per user. So if you set it one way, it may get changed by another user, which could be the OS itself.

  • Opening folders in list view

I just don´t remember how to open folders always in list view.
    Thank you.

Open a Finder window, click on the List View icon in the toolbar. Select Show View Options from the Finder's View menu. Check the box at the top to "Always open in List View," set any other desired options, then click on the Make Default button at the bottom.
You can change the default view mode for any select Finder window when it's open by pressing COMMAND-J and setting the desired view options.

  • No tooltips for long filenames in list view any longer?

    hello all,
i'm trying to figure out why no tooltips are showing for long file / folder names in finder any longer? they appear in icon view, but i've always used list view and tooltips would normally appear when the cursor is moved over a long filename.
this is on 10.8.1, i'm pretty sure they worked on 10.8
any suggestions are much appreciated, thank you.

thank you for the link though the article seems to not exist.  anyway, i tried changing the delay time for the tooltips in finder, but it had no effect on displaying tooltips when hovering over file/folder names.
it should be noted that tooltips still appear when hovering over finder icons, like view options, etc.
is there a preferences file that may need looking at?

  • Homefolder always opens in List-view

In Finder I had selected: Open a new window should open the Homefolder.
Configured the Homefolder (with cmd + J) to Symbol-view with big Icons and other Details.
But ever I open it new with command + N it is in List view…
If I open it from Mc HD / User / Homefolder the view is correct.
Could it be, that this happens, because I selected in the Settings you can reach with cmd + J the List-view as default?
If so, how to cancel this default?

    Hi Danielmak,
This Terminal command is not specifically related to Column View I'm afraid...
I don't fully understand what it does, but what I can tell you is that the script - for me & a few others - got rid of the common problem where the Finder-window only for the Macintosh HD (i.e. double-clicking on the Mac HD icon) always re-set back to Icon-View after a re-start, despite changing the window to List View and un-checking 'Always Open in Icon View' in View Options (Cmd+J).
I'm not sure I fully understand your problem, but..... You can have separate Finder-windows in different view-types (icon/list/column etc), BUT, the view-type does not automatically change between different types as you drill down into the folders in that particular window.
If you want a particular view-type & window-size to stick for each drive or folder on the desktop, you have to make your changes at the first level, then close the window... When you double-click again on that same drive, the view-type (don't forget to un-check the 'Always open in icon view' in View Options) & window position should be the same. If you drill down into the folders in that hard drive, & THEN make changes to view-type & window size, they will not stick (i.e. the next time you double-click on the HD icon, it will re-open in the originally-set position & view-type.)
Hope that helps. Apologies if I've misunderstood the question.
    All the best,
    Jason

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
Ribbon controls (only ITEM and LIST tab) still in disabled mode even if i selected the item in the list view webpart.
Also, i have noticed the below things,
when i create a published site (default page : default.aspx) and add the list view webpart in the default page, the controls are in disabled mode on selecting item in list view webpart.
when i create a team site (default page : home.aspx) and add the list view webpart in the default page, the controls are in enable mode on selecting item in list view webpart.
    Please help me on this.

  • I can't get "Always open in list view" to stick.

No matter how many times I click "Always open in list view" for the folder, it continues to open up in icon view. Help please.
I used to think that I had this problem because I was working mainly off an external drive. But, this folder is on my internal drive. Only thing that I think might affect it is that I am using Dropbox and this is one of the folders that is synced using that service.

Is there a Dock Icon that was created for your Printer? If so, open it and look at the list to be printed and delete the extras.
If not, you did not get that far, so no 15 copies for you!

  • List View always opens folders at the BOTTOM of the list... Help!

This is a very annoying little problem I've encountered. I have 2 folders in my dock - Applications and Downloads. I like to have my Downloads folder open as a List when I click on it, however it always opens the folder at the very bottom of the list. I have it sorted by Date Added so that the last thing I downloaded is at the top, however since the folder shows me the very bottom of the list when I open it, I have to constantly scroll all the way up to the top to find the last item I downloaded.
Also, it doesn't matter how I sort the info, the problem persits (so if I set it to sort by Name, it opens at the bottom with the Z items and I have to scroll up to look through). But if I sort things any other way (Grid, Fan) it always opens at the top like it should. Both folders in my dock behave like this when set to List.
Is there a way to fix List view so that it opens folders at the top of the list?

  • Finder files always in reverse alphabetical order in List View

    Hi all,
Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, I've experienced an intermittent quirk with Finder. I generally keep most files in folders by alphabetical order. But in my Applications folder, Finder is stuck on keeping them in reverse alphabetical order, which is annoying. I've never had this issue in previous releases of OS X becuase there was always the small triangle to invert order, but this triangle doesn't appear in my Applications folder. Only my Applications folder has a weird white bar with Name, Size, etc, as opposed to the gray one that appears in every other folder in the OS.
I have tried to remedy this via the following:
Changing from List View to other views--this puts them in normal alpha order, but I like apps in List View so I can see many of them at a glance
Sorting by other categories (file size, etc.) and then switching back
Clicking on the name bar with every possible combination of buttons (Fn + click, Ctrl + click, etc.)
All to no avail. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? It only happens with the Applications folder, and only in List View.
    Thanks!

I also have this problem, and the work around works for me, but...
This has got to be a bug, right?  There is nothing, anywhere that I can see, that controls whether it is alpha ascending or alpha descending.  The "fix", such as it is, is to ignore the Arrange By menu and use the column headers to select the sort order.
In fact, to bulletproof it (because I will forget eventually) the best solution would be to remove the "arrange" menu altogether because it does not do anything that sorting by column headers does not do.  In fact, it does less.  In even more fact, it does worse than less.
Apple is keenly persuing minimalism.  So why does the arrange menu exist?  And if it does exist, why did no-one test that it works rationally?
The corollary of all this is that the Arrange By menu does the same thing as clicking the menu headers, but when you use it, it disables them.
I have been banging my head on my desk since I bought my new machine with Mt Lion on it about the wretched headers not setting the sort order and it is because some - numbskull is not the _only_ word that comes to mind - has decided one selection mechanism for the sort function should disable the other. ¿Eh?

  • Always open Mac HD in list view How To?

How do you Always open your Mac HD in list view. 10 x out of 10.
After restarting or logging on again.

I unselect "Always open in icon view"
I reselect the original Mac HD window
and click the 2nd icon with 4 horizontal lines= list view.
The Mac HD small View Option window now changes to "Always open in list view" Use as Default is Grayed out. (I have also tried switching one of the "Show Colums:" subcategories such as "Version" to ungray "Use as Defaults" and now click "Use as Defaults"
I close the small Mac HD View Option window.
I close the original Mac HD window with small icon next to words.
    I log out
I log in double click my desk top Macintosh HD icon and the window seems to Always open in icon view.
Any help for this ongoing problem would be appreciated.
    THANKS

Download TinkerTool - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate. Use the General page and check the option at the top to display invisible files. Click the button to relaunch the Finder. In the window you want locate the .DS_Store file and drag it to the Trash. Empty the Trash. Uncheck the invisibles option box in TinkerTool then the Relaunch Finder button. Quit TinkerTool. Locate /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file and drag it to the Trash. Don't empty the Trash.
Now in the desired Finder window reset all your default view options by clicking in the Finder window then pressing COMMAND-J to option the View Options dialog. Do not close this window. Now try restarting. Your window should open on restart automatically in the view you desire. Should you close that window anytime reopen it by clicking on the Finder icon in the Dock, not by double-clicking on the disk icon on your Desktop.

  • IDisk - how to always open in LIST VIEW?

I can't seem to find a way to always open in list view for my iDisk folder, the only option is to always open in icon view. Should I be looking somewhere other than view options?

Hi Meherally. Thanks for the tip, but my problem isn't related to the process for setting default viewing options. Perhaps some clarification will help.
"Next, select 'view options' from 'view' menu. As you say, the window will have "always show in icon view" but note if the box next to is checked or unchecked. If checked, uncheck it."
This box is always unchecked. The problem is that when I change views in the finder window (from icon, to list or coverflow, or whatever, the "view options"menu always says "always open in icon view". It does not change according to whatever view I am using. this only happens in iDisk. All other folders and disks open just the way I have set them.
In my office I have an iMac G5 running Leopard that works perfectly (in other words, I can set my iDisk view default to always open in whatever view I please), but my new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard appears to have a bug that prevents this option with iDisk only. The checkbox always says "Always open in icon view" no matter what view I switch to in the finder window. As mentioned above, the iDisk is the only problem. It always opens in icon view and the checkbox does not change with the current window view. All other folders and disks on the MacBook open jsut the way I want. But I'm getting irritated with iDiks always opening in icon view.
    Thanks!
I've not come across anyone else reporting this problem on any other forum.

  • Certain folders on a server are always completely expanded (in List view). Why?

    Hello, All.
This is an issue that has bugged me for years (possibly since OS 9, although my memory isn't what it used to be and I can't confirm that).
I currently work for a design marketing studio and have spent most of my career in this field. I often have to work off of large servers with many folders within each job folder. For some reason, every time I go to certain folders on the server every folder is expanded (in List view). I collapse them all every time with the option key and arrow, but I would love to find out how to correct this for good. Meaning I would like to go to the folder on the server and find every folder within it already collapsed every time.
There are hundreds of folders that I open daily and when I have to go to certain ones I dread it because it takes forever to open because it has to expand every folder within. It's just a minor inconvenience and time waster, but If there is a way to fix this permanently I would love to hear it. Otherwise I will continue on with collapsing and cursing them all as I've been doing for years.
    Thanks
    P.S.
I had trouble finding the correct category to post this in. I would appreciate any help in moving this post to the proper category. This issue has been present in every version of every OS I've ever run on, not specifically 10.7. I was hoping to find a General Apple Discussions community here, but could not. Most of the communities which seemed to be a reasonable choice were not available to choose. Posting this question has proven to be more frustrating than I had hoped.

  • Faster Full-Name Viewing in List View - does not always work

A little while ago I discovered the Tip (from the Apple Pro tips page) on how one can view the entire file name when in List View and the name is too long to view without widening the column.
One can just roll the mouse over it and wait. But, one can also use the Option key to bring up the full title right away.
Sometimes, I have found though that NEITHER method works. I hover my mouse pointer. Nada. I hold the Option Key and roll over file names. Nada. It seems likely that it is a software issue, some conflict, but I have no clue at to what, yet.
Just before I started writing this, I could not get the Faster Name Viewing or, the roll-over and wait method to work. I had been thinking it took a restart to revive the function. But, then I went and tried File Name Viewing, again and it worked as if there never had been an issue. I had done nothing between it not working and working again except start writing this post.
Anyone have any thoughts or info?

    Fixed.
A and B sort of had a different set of controllers.
I did not realize that the using the sort requires an explicit call to CALL_VIEW to show the page again. I thought it was all automated.
    That was the problem.

  • When expanding folder in list view, finder always go to top. How to stop it?

How to make finder not going to top back again whenever expanding a folder in list view? It just like clicking go to top on a website. i have a lot of subfolder, but when i expand it, finder show back the top list folder(zuupp to the top, grrr!!!), it so annoying to scroll back down just to get back where the last folder expand.

18 months later someone finally responds to you.  I dislike this behavior very much and cannot find a workaround.  The current push by Aple is to make the smaller devices more accessible which is radcially compromising the desktop experience.  I asume you have updated to Mavericks by now.  The auto-sizing columns remains an issue as well.  If this is driving you bonkers too.  Use TAG View and the auto resize to file name length returns.

  • Finder issue-Font always bold in list view

In icon view and column view, the font comes out perfectly normally, but when I switch to list view, the font is bold!!! For some reason, it bugs the heck out of me!
    Anyone have any suggestions?

Go to Users/yourname/Library/Preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart. (You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Xtrafinder seems to have broken my 'list view' in Finder. Please Help.

    I'm using 10.9.4.
I installed XtraFinder a couple of days ago and instantly my Finder didn't work in list view or column view
I can still use it in icon view but none of the others
I've attached an image as an example of what happens when I switch to list view from icon view. I have completely uninstalled Xtrafinder using its own uninstall method.

It's not really clear that you still have a problem, but if you think you do, see below.
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
