Always low signal strength of my wireless connection

Hi,
I have new lenovo notebook ( 3000 n100)
my problen is that always my wireless network signal strength is lower then 60% even when my router is neer the computer !!
what can I do?

I would try changing the signal channel on the router. I don't know why, but sometimes wlan cards seem, idividually, not to perform so well on 1 or 2 particular channels.

  • Very low signal strength when using DLINK 2640t with mac mini

i have a mac mini and i have been using it fine with a 2wire wireless modem. However i have just switched to a Dlink 2640t (54Mbps (802.11g) Wireless ADSL 2/2+ Router with Built-in Modem, 4-port 10/100Mbps Switch) and have been getting very low signal strengths on my mac mini, resulting in me not being able to surf the internet. The modem+ router is located in the next room. Does anyone know whether its the problem with the modem router or mac mini's airport wireless problems with the router itself. It worked perfectly fine with my previous 2wire wireless modem
    please help!

Did you reset the router after you updated router's firmware? Its always recommended to perform a reset after firmware upgrade on the router.

For wireless range and signal issues, try changing the channel on the router to either 1,6,9 or 11.

  • Full signal strength but unable to connect to the internet

I just got my ibook G4 about a month ago and have only been able to access the internet for about 2 weeks on and off. After I set up my wireless linksys router I was able to connect right away and it was fine. Then about a week or so after using it when I tried to open safari a message popped up telling me I was not connected to the internet. This lasted for about a week and then one day out of the blue I was able to connect. This lasted about a week and has since gone back to being unable to connect for the past 5 days. I have full airport signal strength and it recognizes linksys in the drop down menu.
I called Apple and was unfortunately disconnected but they advised me to reset the router by disconnecting it and plugging it back in after ten seconds. Still no luck. I even tried connecting through the cable that is normally connected to the desktop, still nothing.
Does anyone have any advice or know what could be wrong??

Megz, first welcome to the discussions,
Here are the recommended steps to regain your connection.
If you have not changed or fiddled with any of your settings.
1st Check and make sure all of your cables are good and plugged in all the way.
2nd, Shut your computer clear OFF.
3rd, Pull the AC adapter from your Internet Service Providers Modem.
Next Pull the AC adapter from your Router.
You will have to wait a minimum of 5 minutes.
    Next In Order.
Plug back in your Internet Service Providers Modem after your 5 minute wait.
Now you need to wait untill it has regained it's signal from your ISP's server, to your modem, this normally takes a minute or so, or untill you have all the lights (normally 3).
Next you can plug back in your Router and repeat the process of waiting for all the lights again, about a minute.
Now you can turn your computer back on and you should be good.
If not, repeat the process and wait a little longer.
If there is a problem it is normally caused by not waiting untill you have re-aquired the signal form your ISP's Server. Good Luck Don

  • Always have use windows to configure wireless connection

after using the one button setup on my router, I now have to go to the advanced settings to use windows to configure wireless settings. Every time I reboot the computer I have to recheck the box in advance settings.

the advantage in using the built-in utility is that you dont need to worry everytime you reboot your pc...the problem in using your xp utility is that just like in your case you always need to restart wzc configure on your pc which is very inconvient for any user...make sure that built-in utility is configured properly...

  • Intermittent/low signal from my wireless router

I am getting an intermittent or low signal strength on my wireless router WPC11 v.4.  Web pages are taking forever to load or do not load at all.  I believe this to be a router problem because a) when i connect right to my cable modem with a network cable (bypassing the router) I seem to be ok; b) if I go back thru the router but connect a netwrork cable from the router to my laptop, I seem to be ok; c) I sometimes see 5.5 or 2.0 Mbps instead of the normal 11.0.  On my router, the power, wireless-b lights are lit.  The Internet light continuously blinks rapidly.
Is there something wrong with my router?  Could it be the antennaes?  I have had this router for a few years now.  Some other problem?  I am not very technical so I hope I have described the problem as best I could in order to get some help.  Can someone please help me diagnose and resolve?  is there more info I can provide?

You need to upgrade the firmware of your router, reset and re-configure it...Download the Firmware of your router from here , after downloading the firmware follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: - Open

  • A WRT54GC / WMP54G wireless connection issue

I let a friend of mine borrow my Linksys WRT54GC router. It is set up in one room (usually with the door closed). He is connected to the device with his computer using an internal WMP54G. His computer is located in a room across a tiny kitchen from the other room, door closed | rm1 | kitchen | rm2 | His walls are plaster. He generally experiences a low signal strength and a bad connection. Any ideas why?
Are there are any tools that can be used to diagnose the signal strength of the router or determine if there is interference on the channels used?
I've configured the router to use channels 1, 5 and 11. The issue still occurs regardless.

Sorry for jumping in here but I have a related problem with WMP54G v4 Wireless-G PCI adaptor.
I have this installed on a PC (windows XP) in a bedroom accessing a router in another room. 128-bit WEP encryption is used.
This has basically been working fine for quite some time until a couple of days ago when the connection to the router was lost. I now get an 'unable to associate with access point' message and no SSIDs are being found. Signal strength has always been excellent. Furthemore the Linksys icon in the system tray is 'greyed-out' and when I hover the mouse over it I get a 'Disabled' pop-up. I'm stuck. I don't know how to enable the program and have no idea what has caused it to become disabled.
As a last resort I thought about uninstalling and re-installing the software but when I try this using Windows Control Panel the uninstall wizard start but 'crashes' with an 'unable to uninstall - catastrophic failure' windows error message. To compound my confusion on some profiles on the PC (multiple profiles are set up) I can't even activate the Linksys management screens.
My wirelessd access point seems fine with the wireless indicator on the box (I'm using a Wanadoo Livebox if that means anything) suggesting all is fine at the wireless router end.
Help anyone! Where should I start.

  • WRT150N - Very Good Signal with little or no connectivity from wireless computer

I just hooked up my WRT150N today and have had countless issues with the wireless connection.  Literally only 50 feet away and I was having LOW signal strength and intermittent connection.  After HOURS on phone with tech support, and after downloading the firmware to no help, they said to just play around with the channels until it improves.  Well, I followed some advice in one of the other threads and suddenly the strength jumped up to Very Good.  The problem is that it shows 4 out of 5 bars lit up and at times all 5 bars lit up but it still says Limited or NO connectivity.  Anyone know how to fix this?  I reset the settings based on the advice of another thread and have LOW signal but yet excellent connection and video feed.  I'd prefer the "Very Good" strength AND great connectivity which is obvious.  Does anyone have any advice?  Thanks!!!!

You can be physically close yet have poor signal strength is you have a very absorbent wall between the client and the router. So that's one ting to watch for. Having the router near any metal, cordless phone system, the ground, or other absorbing material (think of things that absorb water, like drywall) will also reduce signal levels.
Most often this sort of problem is interference from other routers that your neighbor has nearby, or cordless phone systems, which share the same frequency space as 802.11 routers.
Install the utility "Network Stumbler", available free from http://netstumbler.com/ Then check for what other routers and clients appear in NetStumbler, the channels they are on, and their signal strengths (as well as yours). You can use this to find a channel that is less congested and spaced far apart from competing channels (they overlap in frequency significantly), as well as to optimize your antenna orientation, router location, client location, and router settings.

  • Wireless connection not turned on..?

I'm stumped on how to connect wirelessly on my Macpro 2009? I've always used a hardwire.
    Any help?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Click on , System Preferences, Internet and Wireless, Network. (I'm on OS X 10.6)
Highlight AirPort in the left column (should show a red dot) and click the 'Turn AirPort On' button.
If you don't have AirPort listed in the default location profile, add AirPort by clicking the + sign at the bottom of the left column and selecting AirPort.
That's how to turn it on.
For convenience, check the box 'Show AirPort status in menu bar', so from now on, you'll have the AirPort "fan" icon available to turn it on or off from the menu bar, instead of going into System Preferences. A side benefit is that the icon (10.6 and later) shows a relative signal strength of the wireless network to which you connect.
Be sure to click 'Apply' to save changes.
If you need to configure additional wireless network settings, such as Preferred Networks, TCP/IP, DNS ,and others return to Network preferences, and click the Advanced button in the lower right, revealing this screen:

  • Printer Signal Strength

My HP Photosmart C4380 All in One diagnostic summary shows a very low signal strength and will not wirelessly connect to the hub. How can I strengthen the signal? The printer wirelessly transmitted OK before BT corrected a problem I had between the hub and the emails.
    Boyroy

If your router was replaced, even if it has the same network name (SSID) and password, the printer may not automatically connect.  Here is how to re-establish the connection:
    1. Press the Wireless button on the front of the HP All-in-One.
    2. Press the button next to theicon on the display until Restore Network Defaults is highlighted, and then press the button next to OK.
    3. Confirm that you want to restore the network defaults.
Next, insert your printer's CD (if it supports your operating system) to re-add your printer to your network.  You will have to temporarily connect a USB cable to your printer, but wait until the software asks for it.
Can you get to the settings of the router?
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

Um, NO. Radio Waves travel at 300,000,000 meters per second, approximately the speed of light, Actually they travel AT the speed of light, which is approximately 300E6 meters per second in vacuum.
Of course the speed of light is itself affected by the medium through which the radiation is travelling, usually meaning that the actual speed will be slightly lower than the speed in vacuum (though I think I read somewhere of an experiment leading in at least one case to a speed faster than that in vacuum, don't know whether that was ever reliably replicated). It seems to me that that is approximately the speed of light--300E6==300,000,000--unless you want to put qualifiers onto it--like STP or in a a vacuum.your post could have been interpreted as stating that radio waves travel at approximately the speed of light and that they travel at 300 million meters per second ;)

  • Loss of AP signal strength after upgrading to Clean Air on 5508's.

After upgrading three 5508's (which support 150 AP's) from WLC/WCS version  6.0.182.0 to version 7.0.98.0, our users complained about low signal strength.  Our pre-upgrade RSSI benchmarks confirmed a decrease of -10dB to -20dB signal strength across all AP's, effectively causing wireless networking to be unusable in key areas.
After confirming our Global signal strength settings in WCS and WLC's were still at the same settings they were at prior to upgrading, we contacted our VAR for advice.
He suggested that perhaps the upgrade caused all AP's to run at a lower signal strength.  He was right.
At his recommendation, we reconfigured the WCS to set two AP's to use Individual mode instead of Global mode.  This is found in Radios/802.11b/g/n/Tx Power Level Assignment.  Setting them to level 2 resulted in an average -15dB increase of RSSI, solving our problems in the test environment.  In one case we saw an increase of -30 dB for one AP.
The signal strength loss due to the upgrade was not expected, based on the upgrade documentation.  Now we must change the settings manually on the remaining 148 AP's.
I'd like to hear from anyone else who has experienced a decrease in signal strength after upgrading to Clean Air 7.  If you have information from Cisco that documents this problem, I'd REALLY like to read it.
    Hoping this may help you,
    RS

    Hi Rick,
this is not "expected" or "on purpose". It just happens that improving the RRM algorithm makes things better for 90% of the people but maybe worse for 10% of the people.
This is why you can set the Tx power treshold on the RRM or set the overal RRM algorithm sensitivity.
If you put the Tx power treshold to a louder number (=closer to 0) then the APs will reduce less their power level.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport Express Green Light but No Wireless Connection

I would be grateful for any help on an issue that has been driving me crazy! I have spent countless hours trying countless solutions. My wireless network is set up as such: Time Capsule serving as a Base Station, Airport Extreme, 1 Airport Express downstairs in dining room, 1 Airport Express upstairs landing, and 1 Airport Express in the bedroom. All are new, 802.11n. Time Capsule is configured as Create a Wireless Network/Allow This Network to be Extended. All other devices are configured as Extend a Wireless Network/Allow Wireless Clients. All device lights are green. The Time Capsule and Extreme produce a signal and have strong wireless connectivity. The expresses, though green, do not receive a signal and I cannot connect with laptop/iPhone etc. I have tried pretty much everything including changing the channels on the Time Capsule - basically ran through 10 of them with no difference. The Extreme relays strong wireless signal to the upper landing, but the Express - though showing green - simply does not put out a signal. Getting desperate here as have great wireless interest downstairs, but nothing upstairs no matter what I try. Any ideas MOST welcome. (ps...all firmware is up to date)

Kinda have a similar problem. Hijacking it.
Everything's up to date. About 1 year old.
Modem to AXp via Ethernet, AXp set to create a wireless network, shows greenlight.
Modem is a Motorola SB6120. Probably isn't relevant but let's mention it just to be sure.
Alu Macbook detects AXp. In Airport Utility, when I right-click Identify, it says orange/green flickering light. However, the state is greenlighted and it says that it's normal.
All of my devices detect and can connect to my network. It seems everything's working alright except that none can access Internet.
Internet works fine when I directly connect my modem to my Macbook and when I reset the former (which, according to what I read here and there, is fine).
Everything (Macbook, iPod Touch, Wii) was working fine until yesterday afternoon, and nothing since then. Tried resetting the AXp, cycle everything (unplug all, plug in modem, AXp and boot Macbook, in that order) and it didn't work.
Whether it's set to be distributing IP adresses to be sharing a public IP adress, it doesn't work.
I can click on renew lease, I can reboot my devices, same results.
So, where do I go from here? Just so you know, I know next to nothing about network stuff. Thanks in advance and here's the mandatory "sorry for my horrible english".

  • I just purchased a wireless connection for my Tivo but the signal strength from my airport express does not allow the tivo to load data. How do I increase the signal strength?

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it  is in the another room. I am only receiving one  bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.

There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation:  (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together.  (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express.  Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit.  (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you.  (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help.  If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

  • Can I configure a wireless home network with two cable routers (both with separate connections to the same cable company)?  Issue is poor signal strength even with multiple Airport Expresses added to the network.

I have a wireless home network consisting of a time capsule, two airport expresses and a cable modem.  Even with this configuration I get a very weak signal in much of be condo - the walls, etc. are solid concrete. I want to see if I can add another separately connected cable modem and connect one of the existing airport express to it by Ethernet cable.  If so, this would give me two wired hubs and greatly improve signal strength. I do not know if this configuration will in fact work or if I will just wind up with two, separate and unrelateable networks.  Unfortunately, there is no way to run any additional Ethernet cable and I doubt simply adding more Airport Express will help. Thanks.

Try Ethernet over Power adapters.. these are very popular for your kind of environment.. being able to make non-wireless link to another area where you can setup a wireless access point.
Airport Express are not great for wireless power.. if you really have issues with wireless strength in a bad environment apple stuff is not the way to go.
    The comparison chart here.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/58-2_4-ghz-dn?see=P_F
This is their worst test location you can also see averages.. the latest airport extreme.. is there a long way down.. and that is a much better wireless device than Airport Express.
The Ubiquiti power AP is small cheap and designed for precisely this duty.. useless in an apple wireless network.. you will need to run ethernet or EOP adapters back to the main router.. but if the normal omni directional antennas don't provide enough signal you can get directional ones.. I suspect you can cover your whole apartment with a pair of these and high gain directional antenna.
