Always on desktop, not set to enable disk

HI,
I have had my ipod since christmas and periodically it keeps showing up on my desktop. Right now its on there and the screen on the ipod is blinking don't disconnect.
Enable disk use is NOT checked.
In the past I have went in and Checked Enable Disk Use, closed window then went back in and unchecked it.
But it keeps reverting back to the desk top.
Any way to keep this puppy OFF my desktop and NOT enable disk use?
Thanks Laura

Ok. This could depend on one thing, if you have your iPod set to Manual Update or Automatic Update.

  • Desktop not set as Desktop folder??

    My desktop folder is being shown as my home folder for some reason...is there any way to get the desktop folder to be set as the desktop folder? Is there some kind of file I need to edit?

    What file manager are you using? I recall Nautilus having a setting along the lines of "use home folder as desktop" in gconf.

  • Windows always "enables disk mode"

    I have a 40gb 4th generation iPod connected to a Dell XPS M1210 laptop via USB. the laptop is running XP pro SP2 with all current updates. iTunes is version 7.1.1.5 and iPod is version 3.1.1.
    When docking the iPod, XP always mounts the iPod assigning it a drive letter, even though in iTunes, I do not have the "enable disk use" option checked.
    I can check the "enable disk use", hit "apply" then uncheck "enable disk use" and apply it again and the disk use is not enabled. However, the next time I dock the iPod, it reverts back to the default mode of having the disk use enabled, even though that option is not checked in iTunes.
    I'd like Windows to not start the iPod up with disk use enabled as the default as that option is not checked in iTunes. I'm assuming I need to adjust a registry setting some place. Can anybody help?

    If you have an iPod in manual mode, enable disk use is selected as well, by default. The only way to remove that would be to put the iPod into automatic mode (uncheck "manually manage music" first).
    If you have an iPod in automatic mode, and you sync it to iTunes, when iTunes says that the update is complete and it is OK to disconnect, and the iPod is no longer flashing the Do Not Disconnect screen, the iPod is essentially ejected from your system which is why you would no longer see it in Windows with a drive letter on it. It will continue to show in your Device Manager simply because it is physically connected to your computer.
    Windows sometimes pre-determines what some drive letters are going to be assigned to. If you're getting different behaviors on different computers, this could be a sign that one PC has the drive letter already assigned to something else (even if the same letter is used on both computers). You could try changing the drive letters on various computers (enable disk use FIRST, through iTunes).
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
    This may unify the behavior on both computers, but again, there's no way to connect an iPod to a Windows computer without it getting a drive letter at some point.

  • Enable Disk Use Setting Consistently Reset by iTunes

    Hello.
    Due to the large amount of music on my iPod and the small amount of storage on my old Windows XP laptop, I retained my iTunes library on an external HD. It crashed last weekend on the same day I was ready to migrate the music to my new 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro. I've purchased a new external drive to restore the music from my iPod, and purchased iPodSoft's iGadget to move music from my iPod to the new external HD.
    The problem is that when I click 'Enable Disk Use' and 'Manually manage music...' in iTunes after overriding the iTunes auto sync feature (using ctrl/shift), it isn't retained on the iPod (60 GB 5G). The next time I dock the iPod it prepares to auto-sync. For example, if I monitor My Computer while the iPod is mounting, I see the iPod listed as an external drive, but it drops shortly after, almost as if it's not even making note of the iTunes change to Enable Disk Use. As a result, since it's not being retained as a stable drive, I can't copy from iGadget, nor can I apply the setting for Enable Disk Use.
    Has anyone else had a similar problem? It worked for a little while, and some music was copied down to my new external HD, but then iTunes froze and I had to start over. Since that point it doesn't recognize the override setting.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

    I don't understand. I've used my iPod touch as a disk drive before, but after I installed the new iOS update the device stopped being discoverable as a folder from Windows Explorer. there's about 15 GB of files on it that I can't access. It's all useless space now, I can't even delete them from my iPod without restoring it...
    the iPod touch has never had the option to Enable disk use.
    However you thought you were doing it, it was not an option in iTunes unless you used some other application to hack iTunes.

  • Enable Disk Mode: I'm Stumped

    I'm trying to transfer my iTunes files to a new PC. Two problems:
    (1) My iPod appears in "My Computer" only briefly before disappearing. iTunes sees it, and I have no trouble adding new material via my old computer. It just isn't accessible from "My Computer".
    (2) My iPod will not stay in "Enable Disk" mode. I click it, and click Apply. But the next time I connect my iPod to my computer it is no longer in Enable Disk mode. (Note: although iTunes tells me that it is "syncing" when I apply the Enable-Disk change, there is no discrenable effect on the iPod (e.g., "Do Not Disconnect," or lighting up)).
    I suspect that problems (1) and (2) are related, but I haven't found any solutions in the forums. Can someone help? Thanks.

  • IPod appears on Desktop - enable disk use checked, greyed-out

    Each of my daughters has a video iPod--
    The "white" one - about 11 months old, now appears on the desktop when connected. iTunes opens, but the choice "enable disk use" is greyed-out, i.e. I cannot un-check this, and each time the iPod icon appears on the desktop.
    The "black" iPod-- just a few days old, but essentially the same video iPod-- it does NOT appear on the desktop, and the "enable disk use" writing is NOT greyed-out, i.e. we could "check" this if we wanted.
    How to get the "white" iPod to no longer appear on the desktop? I have tried resetting it, but that doesn't seem to change anything.
    Also-- is there a reason why this appears on the desktop, and is that a limiting factor for any reason-- or a problem? Really just trying to understand this!
    Thanks for any comments.

    If the iPod is set to sync manually, the enable disk use checkbox will always be on, as iTunes doesn't know when you will be done transferring content to the iPod and ready to unplug it. The iPod will appear on a Mac's desktop while iTunes is syncing it or waiting for you to transfer content to it, or when disk use is explicitly enabled and the iPod is plugged in to the computer.

  • Windows could not set a partition active on disk 0. error 0X80300024

    I followed the "Step-by-Step: Basic Windows Deployment" Link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd349348%28v=ws.10%29.aspx
    after creating aotounattend.xml file, I went to step2: building reference installation. however, recieving the below error message:
    "windows could not set a partition active on disk 0. The target disk, partition, or volume does not support the specified operation. The error occurred while applying the unattend asnwer file's <DiskConfiguration> setting. Error code: 0X80300024"
    it happened in the beginning of installation.
    what's more, before that error, system still asked me to choose which languange in the installation and I also need to click install button to begin installation.
    I believe that with answer file, windows 7 should start installation automatically. Am I right?

  • Space hog after setting "enable disk"

    Hi,
    I recently moved my iTunes data form a PC with an XP OS to a Visto OS. I followed the directions in the support pages on how to do that using the ENABLE DISK USE option to synch the ipod playlists etc. to my new PC. It worked fine. However....after I finished, I unchecked the box titled ENABLE DISK USE and the space usage on my ipod grew significantly!
    Prior to the move (and prior to checking the "enable disk use" box, I had maybe 1 GB of OTHER on the ipod. Now it is 10.23 GB and I cannot get it to return to the smaller #. I have not added anything of significance; I do not have any vidoes or photos, it is all music and podcasts.
    Any tips on why the space is being eaten up? How can I compress it?
    Thanks,
    Lori

    Try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Can't connect to Time Capsule. Error: Could not connect to the disk. Make sure NetBIOS is enabled and try again (53).

    I have a Time Capsule that I've been using for a while now. I've got a Windows 8 PC and a few MacBooks that I use with it.
    Recently, I had to hard-reset my Windows 8 PC (with the reset button while everything was locked up). When it came back, I couldn't connect to my Time Capsule anymore. I get the error message: "Could not connect to the disk. Make sure NetBIOS is enabled and try again (53)."
    I've tried:
    Checking on the NetBIOS service to ensure that it's running
    Explicitly enabling NetBIOS on the Internet connection
    Renaming my Time Capusle to have no spaces or disallowed characters
    Pinging both the Time Capsule's name and IP address (both respond)
    Any suggestions?

    Do you have bonjour installed? If not I recommend you install the full apple airport utilities for windows.. although only win7 is available.. it does install in win8. Apple btw need to do some work on making windows access current.
    In windows explorer, simply type the address to the TC in the address bar.
    \\TCname or \\TCipaddress
    If it fails.. turn off firewall and ensure the PC is located at home..as opposed to work or public. A windows PC can go stupid and think it is suddenly in a new environment for no apparent reason. Your reset might do exactly such a thing.
    If you still have issues.. are you getting full internet access ok?
    Can you open the airport utility in windows and find the TC? If so go to the file sharing page and turn on the guest account to read and write access. This helps loads.. and make sure the workgroup is set to WORKGROUP.

  • MSR partition : setup vs diskpart and Disk manager do not set the same offset

    Hi all
    Here is the disk section for the partionning of the datadisk of a windows 2012R2 server :
    <Disk wcm:action="add">
    <CreatePartitions>
    <CreatePartition wcm:action="add">
    <Order>1</Order>
    <Type>MSR</Type>
    <Size>128</Size>
    </CreatePartition>
    <CreatePartition wcm:action="add">
    <Order>2</Order>
    <Type>Primary</Type>
    <Extend>true</Extend>
    </CreatePartition>
    </CreatePartitions>
    <ModifyPartitions>
    <ModifyPartition wcm:action="add">
    <Order>1</Order>
    <PartitionID>1</PartitionID>
    </ModifyPartition>
    <ModifyPartition wcm:action="add">
    <Order>2</Order>
    <PartitionID>2</PartitionID>
    <Label>Software</Label>
    <Format>NTFS</Format>
    </ModifyPartition>
    </ModifyPartitions>
    <DiskID>1</DiskID>
    <WillWipeDisk>true</WillWipeDisk>
    </Disk>
    This way, the data disk of my server are partitionned/formated after installation.
    The data disk initialised by setup are like this
    DISKPART> select disk 2
    Disk 2 is now the selected disk.
    DISKPART> list partition
      Partition ###  Type              Size     Offset
      Partition 1    Reserved           128 MB   64 KB
      Partition 2    Primary           1919 MB   128 MB
    But, if I add a disk and then use Disk manager, or diskpart I get :
    DISKPART> list partition
      Partition ###  Type              Size     Offset
      Partition 1    Reserved           128 MB
    17 KB
    * Partition 2    Primary             39 GB   129 MB
    1. In WSIM, I did not find a way to set the partition aligment. Is it possible ?
    2. Which aligment is the best for performances ?
    Thanks
    ML

    Hi,
    We cannot set the partition aligment in WSIM. To set up the disk partition offset of a volume (or partition), you can either use Diskpart.exe or WMI script.
    For more detailed information, please see:
    Disk Partitioning Offset
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/amitjet/archive/2009/04/17/disk-partitioning-offset.aspx
    Diskpart isn't always the best tool to use to get partition offsets, as it rounds up the values, and when there are multiple partitions, it can be hard to tell exactly what's what, especially with lots of disks where you need to select each one and then
    list the partitions.
    In this case, use wmic to get the exact numbers. The command is as follows:
    wmic partition get BlockSize, StartingOffset, Name, Index

    If the SIM is out of your phone, find my phone needs a data connection, so could use wifi - IF in range of a wifi and one that it can join (ie. a known network or one that is wholly open so no login required).  Your phone could also simple be turned off, so not findable, or it may have been restored (plugged into iTunes and restored as new) again, making it permanently unfindable.  Honestly, for someone stealing an iPhone, this is likely the first thing they do - restore as new and it is theirs forever.
    Find my iPhone is tied to the users iCloud account - the find function is part of the iCloud account's services and it communicates with the iCloud servers over a data connection - either wifi or 3G.
    Have you set up your iCloud account on your replacement phone, and is it working properly on that phone?

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

    I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
    Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
    For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
    Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!

    Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
    I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
    I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
    Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
    Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
    If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
    You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
    I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
    You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
    You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
    But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
    Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
    For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.
