Always resetting Apple TV to watch downloaded movies or content

I have a Sony Bravia 46" flat panel TV connected to Apple TV. (166g)
The Apple TV is connected to a GEFEN 3x1 HDMI switch which is working properly. Unfortunately, every time I purchase a movie or to watch anything using the Apple TV, the same has to be reset using the Apple TV remote control by pressing MENU -SIGN for about six seconds. Once this is done the unit is reset and then it works well without problems. The same happens when I download anything from my Itunes account to the Apple TV.
The main problem is that I have to reset the Apple TV every time I switch in or out from the Apple TV to the Sony TV, or vice-versa and from the internet Itunes to the Apple TV.
I have checked everything (ethernet cable from router to Apple TV; checked the GEFEN switch; Internet-modem connection) This situation occurred after installing the last software to the Apple TV.
The other small problem is that the white light from the Apple TV will no turn off??

Try setting AppleTV output resolution to 720p - this has helped several people who have issues following achnage of resolution.

3.0+ has introduced some HDMI oddities for some.
You might find connecting direct to TV would be better but it's not always practical.

I personally enjoy using DivX for watching movies. It supports a multitude of files.

Depending on the legitimacy of your downloads, certain sites may require you to install specific programs to run a specific file type that they host. If DivX doesn't work for you, then I would look deeper into the website to see if there's any additional software that may be of use to you there.

Watching downloaded movies on TV

I've been experiencing a problem when watching downloaded movies from my iTouch on my tv. Everything downloads okay and I can see and hear the movie, but the movie is too big for the screen. Is there anyway to adjust the movie to fit the tv screen? I've tried adjusting the tv, but that doesn't work.

That depends on where the movie is.
If it is on a computer, it must be in iTunes to be able to stream to the ATV.
If it is from an online streaming service, then it does not need to be in iTunes on the computer.

Apple TV Gen 2 downloading movies issue?

I was given the new apple tv gen2 for my bday in January, after seeing my brother's apple tv gen1. Unfortunately, I have found it is nothing like the gen1, and am thoroughly disappointed. I have unusually long download times (once was 1200mins!!!) though it has gotten better and is only about 1-2hrs now. But I have now encountered another problem.. I keep getting an error message, when I try to download movies, or watch stuff on youtube. "! An error occurred downloading this content" "please try again later". And it keeps saying it. I have tryed re-setting it, I have also tried unplugging it, and replugging it in. I don't know what it could be! I haven't rented the movie through itunes on my computer, it is simply through the apple tv.
Can anyone help me, or shed a bit of light on the situation please?
I'm beginning to think that this is the worst/crappiest bday present I've ever received!!!!

Whenever you download something from the iTunes Store or Youtube, you are downloading it from something called a "Content Distribution Network". Basically, it means you get top download speeds no matter where in the world you are. What you need to check:
Your download speed. If you have a speeds >6MBps (mega-bits per second), then you should download content relatively quickly.
Your DNS settings by going Settings > General > Network. Make sure that DNS do not read 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Okay - let's cut to the chase...
If the Menu Bar (File, Edit... Help) shown in my screenshot below is not visible, use CTRL+B to display it. Then click on Help/Check for Updates. If one is available, you will be able to select it at this time.
Note the item at the bottom of the list; About iTunes. Selecting that will show you which version of iTunes you are using.
An alternative method to display the Menu Bar is click on the box in the top left of your iTunes window...

I downloaded movies directly from Itunes on my Ipad while I was at home using my WiFi.
How can I watch them when I don't ave any WiFi available (on an airplaine, hospital).
Tried to watch them and the Itunes on my Ipad says it needs WiFI.

Once the movies have been synced or downloaded to your ipad, you then watch them with the videos app not itunes, I believe this is why you are seeing the message stating need wifi.
If you cannot locate videos app, do a search on the pad by swiping down slightly on the home screen to get the search bar and search Videos.

I have tried to reset my Apple ID password to download app updates to my iPhone 4S. The 4S will NOT recognize the reset password. My iPad 2 and iTunes (MacBook Pro) WILL recognize the reset password for app updates. Solution??

First you must try to reset your password from the Apple ID support site - https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
If all efforts fail here, then you must contact "the iTunes store support", as these are the only people who have access to your Apple ID data. Technical support does not.

It never actually powers off but will go into idle/sleep state as Kate suggests.
To be honest it uses under 6W of power when in use, less when not so it may not be a huge problem, though I suppose every little helps when it comes to saving power.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 with the TV Go App installed. It used to work fine, but it no longer plays sound on downloaded movies, regardless of which quality of video is downloaded. Is there a fix for this issue? My volume is not on mute and head phones/speakers work for all other functions.

Screen freezes when I try to watch downloaded movie

I downloaded a rented movie and when I go to watch it the screen freezes. No controls come up or anything. No part of the page responds- not the minimize, close out, etc functionality is gone.
Really the problem started when I downloaded a newer version of ITunes. I downloaded another movie that I couldn't watch since the sound wouldn't work. I was able to watch other DVDs in my laptop, so the problem is with Itunes only. Since that time, i wanted to see if I couldn't correct the problem by downloading Itunes again and then I downloaded Quicktime again- based on a recommendation I saw somewhere on the Apple support site. I also downloaded a TV show to test out my changes. Eventually after a while the show worked and actually still works, but this movie won't even play. This is the worst problem I've had so far.
