This is my new laptop just bought 2 weeks ago install arch on 2012 Nov 12
i have tried almost the why i knew to poweroff the laptop
poweroff, shutdown now, systemctl {poweroff, reboot} but no matter what i do it stilll show crash and continues to check my disk in every boot..
Command R only works on Macs running v10.7, v10.8, or v10.9.
A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that may help.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu. If the Mac crashes again, try a PRAM reset > Resetting the PRAM
Just so you are aware, you won't be able to restore OS X without the discs that came with the Mac. They are machine specific.

I purchased bioshock 2 on the app store on my macbook pro (running lion) and it shows 'an error has occured' every time I try to download the app. How do I install it properly, I have restarted my mac and reset the app on the debug menu?
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
Adobe Flash player states it is installed and gives the current version but when I attempt to view a video it tells me to download the newest flash player however it showed I have installed it.
When I go to uninstall programs it does not show any files have been downloaded for the program... so I have uninstalled; restarted; re-installed under administrator; turned off any virus protection and firewalls... etc.
Basically I have tried everything I have seen posted.
I need help!!!!Do you have NoScript or Flashblock or some similar Extension installed? If so, are you allowing the site, at least on a temporary basis, access by such an Extension?

I'm trying to boot my system from multiple machines using only a USB. I have a PC & MacBook Pro. When I have built & configued my system correctly from my MacBook Pro, I have tried to boot it from PC as well to make sure the boot process has no errors.
Booting from MacBook Pro is completely fine (1st boot). After that, I have tried to boot from a PC and the boot process is also fine (2nd). However, when I went back to MacBook Pro to boot my system again (3rd boot), I get an error:
systemd-fsck: /dev/mapper/<dm_name>: Superblock last mount time (Tue Dec 3 15:25:41 2013,
systemd-fsck: now = Sat Jan 19 18:29:54 2013).
systemd-fsck: /dev/mapper/<dm_name>: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
systemd-fsck: (i.e., without -a or -p options)
I did run fsck and it says:
fsck from util-linux 2.24
e2fsck 1.42.8 (20-Jun-2013)
/dev/mapper/<dm_name> is mounted.
e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.
However, when I just run reboot, the error has disappeared but everytime I switch to PC and then go back to MacBook Pro, I get that error and it disappear after I reboot.
Can anyone explain to me why I get that error? is the problem related to time configuration? how to configure it so that it wont get that error again.
I appreciate your help :)
Last edited by heyom (2013-12-03 18:29:52)Yes, it's related to time config. Apparently, the clock on your PC is correct but the clock on your Mac is very incorrect (Jan 2013). You need to synchronize the clocks.

Thread Start is always running, is it normal?
Hello all,
Here is our system EP6 SP17, 1CI and 2servers and 2 instances by server.
I observed into the Monitoring/thread overview that on the CI and on the first instance of the servers the thread "EP:PRT:START" is always running since the last restart.
Could you tell me if it's normal and also why?
Thank you for your help.
Pino.I'm not sure SAP have provided you with a very good answer. On our EP7 (NW2004s SP16) Portal we can observe similar activity against GUEST user for example:
Request Name User Response Time (ms) Gross CPU Time (ms) Total Components Status Start Time
EP:PRT:START Guest 92,326,295 663,510 2,500 26/11/2008 04:21
EP:PRT:START Guest 92,025,550 591,460 2,500 26/11/2008 12:04
EP:PRT:START Guest 92,010,389 650,390 2,515 26/11/2008 12:04
EP:PRT:START Guest 91,724,752 597,010 2,500 26/11/2008 12:04
EP:PRT:START Guest 91,717,756 600,290 2,500 26/11/2008 12:04
EP:PRT:START Guest 91,666,134 521,120 2,501 26/11/2008 12:04
If you look at the CPU time alone on these threads that's not going to help performance, anyway! You could get SAP to look at a Diagtool trace (sap note 1045019) to see exactly what these users are doing, or switch on JARM and look at the traces in /nwa on your portal.
Cheers,

Re: Satellite L550D-12E - fan is always running
Hi there!
We have a Toshiba L550D-12E and we're pretty satisfied with the device itself - if there wasn't the noisy fan. The fan ALWAYS runs audibly and I can't find any setting in the BIOS of its control .
To my verxy sorrow I also can't find a support contact form to contact Toshiba so i hope that anybody here will know a solution...thank you very much!
Kindly regards,
MatthiasFans performance is controlled by fan table stored in BIOS.
Fan table contains info about the temperature levels and how and when the cooling fan has to start and stop rotating.
I guess this has been improved in BIOS to keep the temperature at lower level. This would protect the parts from damage due to high temperature.
As far as I know you can change this a little bit.
In Toshiba HWSetup in CPU tab you can set the CPU to always low or dynamically would recommend checking both options
Furthermore in Win 7 power option you can change the cooling method to more battery friendly state this should slow down the fan rotation too. -
Regarding the product Time Capsule... is the modem the same as the Airport extreme and is the disk drive always running??? I'm worried about it lasting at least five years.
John,
I'd pay good money to bet it wouldn't last 5 years... I don't rate the in built power supply and as for "server grade hard disk" - Hmmmm..... The failure rate of all HD's on the market after 3 year is 60%.
Regards,
Shawn -

Uninstall MacKeeper:
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 required more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk. -
Brand new Mac Book Pro
Purchased in Mexico's Department store Liverpool on June 20th 2012
Purchased Memory upgade to 8Gb, on june 27th, at Apple Store Memorial City, Houston
Upgraded memory from 4Gb to 8Gb on June 28th.
Tried to write on my external HD (previously written on a windows based PC) with no success.
Upon reccomendation from a Mac assistant, copied all my external HD contents into my Mac Hard drive.
Then formatted my external HD and copied back all my information to it.
deleted all the information from my MacBook Pro HD.
Attempted to repeat the same operation with another external HD, but got a message saying there was not enough epace on the computer HD (even though I have a 750Gb Hard Drive.
Looked in the trash bin and there it was, all the information previously deleted..
Could not empty the trash bin, although I got a message asking me to safely delete all the information from the trash bin,
Could not get enough space released, after several attpempts the trash bin was finally emptied.
All happy getting acquainted with my new MacBook Pro. Two days later, got a gray screen and not able to start the computer.
Looking in to Mac support I found article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 and followed instructions to perform a safe boot:
"Perform a Safe Boot
Simply performing the Safe Boot may resolve this issue.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to
see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
The following is the script that appears on the screen upon safe boot. and halt after the last line.

Firefox no longer loads home page or deletes cookies. I have repeatedly checked both settings and they are correct. It always goes to the last page I was on when I closed the browser .
Go to '''TOOLS''' then''' OPTIONS''' then in '''GENERAL''' panel in '''STARTUP '''session choose '''Show my home page''', then click '''OK''' to save it, exit firefox and restart-it.

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple? I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!
Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

I have a new but 2010 model. It operates very slow and has gray screen occassionaly. One store said it's "safe sleep", the other graphic board. Is anyone else having this problem with computer only 4 mos. old?
Your problems may be caused by software or hardware, including the gray screen and the slowness. The intermittent gray screen is a puzzler and probably is hardware. TUSL2C’s diagnosis may be right on the money. A question is how to isolate it to HW or SW that so you can get good service?
The obvious cheap and easy fix is to replace that cable but I don’t think you can do that because it is under warranty. There are other ways to isolate the problem that won’t void the warranty.
If the disk turns out to be healthy and it continues to boot to a gray screen then that will be a sign that internal hardware, other than the disk, is to blame. Since they are blaming it on software we will be able to test it with a pristine OS X installation that has no 3rd-party software to blame.
> They are calling it "Safe Sleep Mode" and that happens if I don't use the machine within 4 hours.
The machine should go to sleep and wake up almost instantly every time without a gray screen. If you can demonstrate the problem reliably by putting it to sleep and waking it up then that will be most useful. We will show it failing on pristine OS X software without 3rd-party mods to prove it is an Apple problem. Similarly if you can reliably show the gray screen from a power-on boot that will help.
My first question is do you have a current Time Machine (or other) backup? If not you should create one before we get to steps that could stress the disk. If it is a faulty cable or a faulty disk then the system could stop functioning at any time. It is always prudent to maintain a current backup and especially important when the system is sick. If you do not have a Time Machine (or other) backup then post back for instructions on how to create one.
In the mean time please download and run Etrecheck and post back the results.

This will indicate possible software compatibles and other details that may be helpful in a diagnosis.
Also run disk diagnostics with Disk Utility. This will check if the disk and filesystem are healthy.
From the Finder, pull down on the Go menu to Utilities. This will open the Applications > Utilities folder.
Then run Disk Utility.
Click on the upper left disk icon.
Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”.
If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.
Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD”.
Verify Disk.
If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.
If it shows errors in red then you may have found a problem.
Click on Repair Disk Permissions.
It will give lots of messages in black and white, which are OK.
If it gives any messages in red then there is an issue to address.
It will be useful to have some test that shows the slow speed that uses standard OS X applications such as Pages, Numbers, Presenter, iTunes, iMovie... or even just the Finder opening windows or starting applications. We can then use that test when isolating the source of the slowness.
How many seconds does it take to boot from power-on to either the login screen or the Finder is up? Please time that. It is a good speed test. If it is over a minute then something is wrong.
One way to isolate the issues will be to sandbox it using another disk to test what happens with different software on different hardware disks in different locations. That will not void the warranty.
But before going there or proceeding further let’s look at the Etrecheck and Disk Utility results, ensure the system is backed up, and then try some other standard tests. -

My G Drive will not show up on my desktop for use. It did yesterday. It is not full and currently the light turns on and seems to be running but will not show up on my desktop. What can I do?
1. verify on another Mac first. and another port.
2. very likely dead SATA card
read about it here:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD
