AlwaysOn on DB Cluster

Hi All,
During our internal discussion we have a plan to configure AlwaysOn but as per our existing environment I have few questions to take this proposal to the client.
Existing environment: SQL Server 2012 Active/Passive cluster
Requirement: Configure AlwaysOn as DR for more than 100 databases in this SQL Server 2012 (default) instance of Active/Passive cluster.
Question:
Is it possible to install another (named) instance in this DB cluster (Active/Passive) and configure AlwaysOn between these two default and named instances.
or
Is it preferred to configure another windows server, SQL (standalone), add node to the existing active/passive cluster and configure AlwaysOn
Please suggest.

Kalyan
Grateful to your time and support. Regards, Shiva

Well, I think you want to cover all the databases located on the server, am I right? I think you would be better staying with a FCI (cluster solution) that applies on the instance level.. Much easy to maintain.

  • Network load balancing SQL Server 2012

    Hi all,
Out of pure curiosity, would the following scenario to load balance work:
    * Create an NLB of 2 nodes
    * On each node, install sql server, in my case 2012 std
    * Create a merge replication which manages identity columns between the 2 servers. One node is the publisher the other one the subscriber
If I were to implement this, what would be the risks ?
    Thanks
    Olivier

SQL Server does not support load balancing.
Yes you can do what you describe.  You need to use "sticky sessions" to make sure users always get the same server, which kind of defeats the purpose of load balancing.
I would suggest looking into an AlwaysOn availably group cluster instead.  Not the same thing, but built in and you can redirect read only users to use a replica.

  • How to protect (take backups) SQL 2014 AAG databases from DPM 2012 R2 with RU2

We have just upgraded / replaced our SQL Server plattform in the following way:
    SQL Servers:
    3 Servers running Windows 2008 R2 + SQL Server 2012 CU9
Upgraded to SQL 2014 so the system databases were up to the latest level
Removed all AlwaysOn AAG, destroyed cluster etc
Then total reinstall of all servers with Windows 2012 R2 + fresh install of SQL 2014
Replaced the fresh system databases with the old upgraded databases
    Upgraded SQL 2014 With CU2
Re-setup a New cluster and AlwaysOn. All SQL Servers are running fine
    DPM 2012 R2 With RU2:
Removed all previous backups of both AAG, Bare Metal etc related to the old servers.
    Uninstall the DPM agents
Reinstalled agents after the 3 new serves where ready
Added Bare Metal backup. Works fine.
Added SQL Server backup of databases not part of any AAGs. Works fine.
Then comes the problem: I try to add protection of the new AAG's in DPM. I can see the new cluster and the AAG's, but when I try expand each Group, nothing shows up. It takes around 20 sec or so after I try to expand.
Any clue about what can be wrong?

  • Exploring AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances in SQL Server 2014 Tecnet Labs

I like the Labs and have found them very usful. I have a problem with: Exploring AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances in SQL Server 2014. The lab starts but hangs on opening SQLONE and the Manual never loads. I have tried coming out and starting again but
get returned to the same failing session. I thought I would mention it here as the is no way to feedback a response as the appraisal only happens once the lab is completed, i.e. no apparent link on the lab site. The session ends when the HOL is reported
    as not responding.

    Hi,
    I'd try this first:

  • SQL 2012 AlwaysOn cluster IP not moving after failover, causing database to be read-only

    SQL Server Cluster Name: SQLDAG01
    SQL Server Cluster IP: 10.0.0.50
    Cluster Listener IP: 10.0.0.60
    Node 1 Name: SQL01
    Node 1 IP: 10.0.0.51
    Node 2 Name: SQL02
    Node 2 IP: 10.0.0.52
Everything is fine when SQL01 is the primary. When failing over to SQL02, everything looks fine in the dashboard but for some reason the cluster IP, 10.0.0.50, is stuck on node 1. The databases are configured to provide secondary read access. When executing
a query on SQLDAG01, I get an error that the database is in read-only mode. Connectivity tests verify that SQLDAG01, 10.0.0.50, connects to SQL01 even though SQL02 is now the primary.
I've been Googling this for the better part of the day with no luck. Any suggestions? Is there a Powershell command force the cluster IP to move to the active node or something? Also I'm performing the failover as recommended, from Management Studio connected
    to the secondary node.

This was the answer, it had been setup to use the cluster name instead of the application name. Whoever installed Sharepoint connected it to SBTSQLDAG01 instead of SHAREPOINT01. Once we changed Sharepoint to connect to SHAREPOINT01, the failover worked as
expected. We did have a secondary issue with the ARP cache and had to install the hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2582281 to resolve it. One of the Sharepoint app servers was failing to
ping the SQL node after a failover, the ARP entry was stuck pointing to the previous node. This article actually helped a lot resolving that: http://blog.serverfault.com/2011/05/11/windows-2008-and-broken-arp/
One thing I did notice is that the SQL failover wizard does not move cluster groups "Available Storage" and "Cluster Group", I had to move those through the command line after using the wizard. I'm going to provide the client with a Powershell script that
moves all cluster groups when they need to do a manual failover. This also happens to be why the Sharepoint issue started, "Cluster Group" is what responds to the cluster name SBTSQLDAG01. Moving that group over to the node that has the active SQL cluster
group also made it work properly, but using the application name is the correct method.
Thanks everyone for all your help. Although the nitpicking about terminology really didn't help, that was a pointless argument and we really could have done without it. Yeah I know 2008 called is "Failover Cluster Manager" and MSCS is the "2003 term" but
really, they're basically the same thing and we don't really need to derail the conversation because of it. Also, If you look at the screenshot below you can clearly see "AlwaysOn High Availability" in SQL Management Studio. That's what it's called in SQL,
that's where you do all the work. Trying to tell me it's "not a feature" is wrong, pointless, and asinine, and doesn't get us anywhere.
Sorry it took so long to get back, I was off the project for a couple weeks while they were resolving some SAN issues that caused the failover to happen in the first place.

  • SQL 2012 failover cluster\mirroring VS AlwaysOn for VDI?

Hi, we have to build high availability SQL 2012 cluster for VDI and we have two options. One option is to build a server cluster with combination of failover and mirroring and other option is to build failover cluster with AlwaysOn.
We are not sure which option to chose. We have contacted Microsoft support to provide us some documents and instructions for failover\mirroring combination but they have send us instructions for AlwaysOn option.
What would be best way to build high availability cluster for VDI? Also, since first option is very complicated, we would appreciated if someone could provide us with some documentation for it (how to build it, what to look out for, etc.) because that is the probably the option we are going to use.
    Thank you in advance.

  • DPM 2012 R2 CU4 protecting SQL 2014 AlwaysOn AG with Failover Cluster vs. DR location

    Hello!
We have a problem protecting any Database of SQL 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Group with SQL Failover Cluster Instance when moved to DR location. Everything is protected using DPM 2012 R2 CU4 from Primary location.
    FACTS
    - all servers are Windows Server 2012 R2
    - all servers are Virtual (except Hyper-V hosts obviously:)
    - that means virtualization is based on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V
    - all clusters (SQL, Exchange,...) are Guest Clusters on Hyper-V
    - SQL 2014
    - DPM 2012 R2 CU4
    - Primary and DR location
    SETUP
    SQL
    - Primary location: SQL 2014 Guest Cluster with SQL Failover Cluster Instance using Shared VHDX disks
    - DR location: SQL 2014 Standalone using VHDX disks
    - AlwaysOn Availability Group expands between the primary and DR location.
    DPM
    - Primary location: DPM 2012 R2 CU4
    - DPM 2012 R2 CU4 Agents installed on every possible SQL 2014 Server.
    SCENARIO
    - DPM is backing up all the SQL Databases normally as long as they exist on any SQL Cluster Node on Primary location.
    - As soon as any Database is moved to DR location, that Database is not backed up anymore with the following error.
    DPM ERROR
    Starting synchronization on SqlServerName\DatabaseName failed:
Error 104: An unexpected error occurred while the job was running.
Error details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)
    Recommended action: Retry the operation.
    TROUBLESHOOTING
    - Tried to modify SQL Protection Group in DPM Server while Database was active on DR location
    > error enumerating volumes or drives D:\, E:\, F:\ (I don't have exact error atm)
    > this looks like DPM is not aware that DPM is active on DR location to me
    - Checked Technet, blogs and forums; no useful information
    QUESTION
Is this expected or by-design behavior? Is this a bug? I am aware there were quite some issues backing up AG's from DPM 2012 SP1 ans SQL 2012 on.
Does anybody have a lab of that kind to try it out?
    Thank you!
    Best Regards,
    Damjan Grimšič

OK. The issue has been resolved. Issue was related to possible Disks Owners in Failover Cluster Manager Console for SQL Cluster.
In Primary's site SQL Cluster Failover Manager Console / Storage / Disks.
SQL Server(s) from Secondary location need(s) to be unchecked as Possible owner(s) in Advanced Policies for all relevant Volumes.

  • Combine AlwaysOn AG with file share cluster

We’re a quite small company, but need HA for services in the DMZ. So we decided on SQL 2012 AlwaysOn AG in order to serve load-balanced web servers. (We do use AlwaysOn AG for SharePoint 2010 and a new critical application.) Now the web servers
in the DMZ also run EPiServer; here we need a HA file share for the AppData folder (BLOB files).
Could we combine these requirements on two servers? Or do we have to install four?
    MCTS: Messaging | MCSE: S+M

Yes.  If you have shared disks you can create an HA file share on the two cluster nodes that you use for your AlwaysOn AG.  But this is an unusual configuration.
Another option is to simply use SQL Server as your HA file share using FileTable.
FILESTREAM and FileTable with AlwaysOn Availability Groups (SQL Server)
The cool thing here is that you get an HA file share without a shared disk.  All the files saved to the share would be replicated to the other node by the AlwaysOn AG.

  • AlwaysON cluster issues

Hi, we've been having some serious issues with our AlwaysON cluster configuration.
This is the short description of the scenario:
    - Windows Server 2008R2 (Active Directory and DNS) (Subnet 1)
    - Windows Server 2012R2 (SQLServer 2012 Cluster Node 1) (Subnet 2)
    - Windows Server 2012R2 (SQLServer 2012 Cluster Node 2) (Subnet 3)
First of all, the cluster hadn't enrolled in the DNS server from it's creation.
Right after cluster creation we've been having' a "DNS server failure" error showing up
in cluster's log every 10-15 minutes.
After manually create the DNS record and giving the apropiate permissions to the CNO and
node accounts, the error changes to 'Handle is invalid' and is still showing up every
    10-15 minutes.
Anyway, it seems that the AlwaysON feature is working somehow, and the application can access
the database through the Availability Group listener. But, recently, the SQL Server Log has
started to show the following message :"The Service Broker endpoint is in disabled or stopped state."
and since then, we are having intermitent access to the database with no apparent pattern
    of ocurrence.
    Any advice?

The DNS record has to be created by the virtual computer object (VCO). One reason why you are getting the error message "Handle is invalid" is because the encryption keys used on the domain controller is different from the one on the failover cluster.
Do you see Event ID 1228 and 1196 in the Windows event log? You can apply this
hotfix on your Windows Server 2012 R2 cluster nodes but you still need to let the DNS record be created by the VCO. Also, for multi-subnet clustering, you need to configure the RegisterAllProvidersIP and HostRecordTTL parameter values to meet your recovery
    objectives.

  • Is cluster environment needed in alwayson?

    Hi All,
I have a question, can  we built 'Alwayson group' without a cluster environment?
If we can, what are the disavantages in building it?
    Or
If we can not? Why we can not built in non-cluster environment?
I did some research in google some say we can built in standalone some say we can not, but I do not get the concrete answer. The agenda is we are planning to cut cost for clustering. Please help me to understand it.
Also Suggest me some blogs, books for the same.
    Thanks
    Best Regards Moug

    Hello Moug,
You cannot build SQL Server AlwaysOn groups without Windows Cluster. Whatever resources out there in the web, saying that it can, are kind of misleading - there is a strict requirement from Microsoft that you need Windows Cluster to get advantage of the
AlwaysOn groups (you can check the
    AOAG Overview and the
    WSFC feature).
Also, since Windows Server 2012, Failover Clustering feature is supported in Standard edition as well, so that can help with the costs, I guess.

  • AlwaysOn Cluster reboot due to file share witness unavailability

    Hi Team,
Anyone came across this scenario in AlwaysOn Availability Group (two node), file share witness times out and RHS terminate and cause the cluster node to reboot. File share witness is for continuous
failover and if the resource is unavailable my expectation was that it should go offline and should not impact Server or Sql Server. But its rebooting the cluster node to rectify the issue.
    Configuration
Windows Server 2012 R2 (VMs) - two node, file share witness (nfs)
    Sql Server 2012 SP2
    Errors
A component on the server did not respond in a timely fashion. This caused the cluster resource 'File Share Witness' (resource type 'File Share Witness', DLL 'clusres2.dll') to
exceed its time-out threshold. As part of cluster health detection, recovery actions will be taken. The cluster will try to automatically recover by terminating and restarting the Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process that is running this resource. Verify
that the underlying infrastructure (such as storage, networking, or services) that are associated with the resource are functioning correctly.
The cluster Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process was terminated and will be restarted. This is typically associated with cluster health detection and recovery of a resource.
Refer to the System event log to determine which resource and resource DLL is causing the issue.

Thanks Elden, We were using DFS name for the file share! We gave the actual file share name and looks good now.
Few interesting facts, the failure happens exactly between window 12:30 PM to 1:30 AM and it never recorded any error specific to DFS! Not sure if there was any daily maintenance or task happens during the window pertaining to DFS.
+ DFS is not supported or recommended by Microsoft
Do not use a file share that is part of a Distributed File System (DFS) Namespace.

  • Dedicated network for AlwaysON replication traffic when a replica is a Failover Cluster Instance

    Hi,
We are planning to setup dedicated network for our Availability Group replication traffic. We have a Failover Cluster Instance as the primary replica and a standalone SQL server instance as the secondary.
I understand that we will need to manually configure the database mirroring endpoints on both the replicas to listen on the specific IP.
But how do I configure the database mirroring endpoint on the Failover Cluster Instance ?
    Please help.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Jisha

If you have a dedicated network for your Availability Group replication traffic between the FCI and the standalone instance, you need to identify if there will be other network services included in the mix. For example, your public network is already using
it's own DNS server by virtue of Active Directory integration. Your dedicated network for replication traffic may or may not have its own DNS server so configuring the endpoints would involve using either IP addresses like the one highlighted in the
blog post or using hosts file with fully qualified domain names so you can use them when creating the endpoints

  • SQL 2012 AlwaysON High Availability for SharePoint 2013

Our Company have 2 Webfront Servers for Sharepoint 2013 and one Database SQL 2012 Server.
We got one more Server & we don't have Storage so need to configure Always On.
    There are Some Confusions:
1- Database Server is in production, so how much down time required to Achieve the AlwaysOn?
2- What are the Changes need to be done on Production Server?
3- What are the Steps to be followed While Configuring new Database Server?
    Regards,

    Hi Genius1985,
According to your description, you want to configure a SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Group for your database, right?
Question 1: Database Server is in production, so how much down time required to achieve the AlwaysOn?
There is no a certain downtime for AlwaysOn, it depends on the configuration of our AlwaysOn Availability Group, normally it can be several seconds or minutes. In order to understand why there is downtime for SQL Server with Microsoft Clustering, please refer
    to the following article:
    http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1882/understanding-why-there-is-still-downtime-for-sql-server-with-microsoft-clustering/
Question 2 and 3: What are the Changes need to be done on Production Server? What are the Steps to be followed While Configuring new Database Server?
Since AlwaysOn Availability Groups require a Windows Server Failover Cluster, we first need to add the Windows Failover Cluster Feature to all the machines running the SQL Server instances that we will configure as replicas.
Once the Windows Server Failover Cluster has been created, we need to proceed with enabling the AlwaysOn Availability Groups feature in SQL Server 2012.  This needs to be done on all of the SQL Server instances that we will configure as replicas in our
    Availability Group.
For more details about Step-By-Step: Creating a SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Group, please refer to the following article:

  • IP conflict detacted by the OS after a cluster is created.

I am creating a Cluster in Windows with 3 nodes using Windows 2008R2 64bits in preparation of creating a AlwaysOn Group for SQL 2012 Server after that.
I got a little problem with the IPs (conflicting) after I have created a cluster and wonder if someone could suggest what is the best practice to do that.
I've followed 'Create a New Faiover Cluster'
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755129.aspx
using the Faiover Cluster Manager to create a cluster.  I loved this tool.  But unfortunately, after the 3 nodes successfully added and a new cluster is created,  I got a Window's message saying that there is an IP conflict with the other computer.
After working our network adminstration, it turns out that in the network setting on each node,
the IP number generated after the Cluster is not the one that is assigned within the range by the DNCP server.  The IP in Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection section is ok, unchanged.
It is the one under the 'Ethernet adaptor Local Area Connection* 10' of Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter showing a dummy '169....'.
From what our network administrator told me, it is possible that we ran out of/use up the range assigned.  So, I am now given three brand new IP numbers to use for this clustering.
But I am not sure how to use it to incorporate when I run the wizard in Failover Cluster Manager again, because it does not ask.  So, my question is, what is the best approach to tell the cluster manager to use these new IP numbers.  I have document
link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190460.aspx to show me to change the IP number after the cluster is created.  I wonder if this is the best practice or right way to
    do that.
    Thank you.
Note: All 3 three has its IP 'reserverd', so they don't get changed or expired on each computer before the clustering set up.  When all goes well, I will get new hardware with static IPs and if my assumption is correct, I hope it will eliminate the
    issue I am experiencing.

    Hi,
Please rerun the validation test then post the error or warning part, that report will quickly locate the issue. Please try to disable all your AV soft and firewall then try
    again.
If you want to add some node to the current failover cluster, please refer the following KB first.

  • SQL Server 2012 - Wat Is The Best Solution For Creating a Read Only Replicated/AlwaysOn Database

Hi there I was wondering if someone may have a best recommendation for the following requirement I have with regards setting up a third database server for reporting?
    Current Setup
SQL Server 2012 Enterprise setup at two sites (Site A & Site B).
Configured to use AlwaysOn Availability groups for HA and DR.
    Installed on Windows 2012 Servers.
This is all working and failover works fine and no issues. So…
    Requirement
A third server needs to be added for the purpose of reporting, to be located on another site (Site C) possibly in another domain. This server needs to have a replicated read only copy of the live database from site A or Site B, whichever is in use. The Site
C reporting database should be as up-to-date to the Site A or Site B database as possible – preferably within a few seconds anyway….
Solution - What I believe are available to me
I believe I can use AlwaysOn and create a ReadOnly replica for the Site C. If so do I assume Site C needs to have the Enterprise version of SQL server i.e. to match Site A & Site B?
Using log shipping which if I am correct means the Site C does not need to be an Enterprise version.
Any help on the best solution for this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Steve

for always on - all nodes should be part of one windows cluster..if there site C is on different domain - I do not think it works.
Logshipping works --as long as the sql on site C is is same or higher version(sql 2012 or above).  you can only do read only.
IMHo, if you can make site C in the same domain then, Always is better solution else log shipping
also, if your database has enterprise level features such as - partitonin, data compression -- you cannot restore the database on lower editions- so you need to have enterprise edition.
    Hope it Helps!!
