Am I asking too much of my power supply?

I do have a lot crammed into this Mac Pro - but isn't that half the point of resisting an iMac?
I've had an issue with getting a Harmony remote to be recognized by its remote software, and eventually used my office MBP to solve the problem. The phone service tech said he could see the remote, but the connection was too weak to go through.
A while ago, I also tried using a powered USB hub (a new newer tech model), and got a weird and horrifying reaction where the mac couldn't summon enough juice to boot - just a dim glimmer on the power lamp and a sigh, then nothing. Disconnect the hub, reboot, no problem.
So I'm wondering if I need to do some internal triage, reluctantly - and seeking advie.
Here's my confession:
Mac Pro 5,1 (Quad Core 3.2 GHz Xeon)
- 24 GB RAM (3 slots used)
- 200 GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro RE SSD (Boot - Lower Optical bay)
- 3 TB Hitachi
- 3 TB Hitachi
- 2 TB Hitachi
- 2 TB Seagate (all main bay drives in striped SoftRaid array)
- PCI slot 1 - radeon HD 5870 (factory)
- PCI slot 2 - raid controller
- Display 1: Dell 24"
- Display 2: Dell 19"
- permanent USBs: Apple keyboard, Wacom tablet (Intuos 3)
- ad hoc USBs: iPhone, Epson 4990 scanner, Epson R1900 printer, stupid harmony remote
- firewire/thunderbolt: none (must try harder)
I'd love it if there was a way to make sure I can power all this through the main power supply, instead of adding on external RAID boxes etc.
Thoughts? Eyes rolling in horror?

What happens if you temporarily plug the stupid harmony remote into the USB socket the Wacom tablet is in?
I've used the Harmony software (both the simple version for the simple remotes and the more complex for the higher end remotes) without difficulty but in all cases the remotes were plugged into a dedicated USB socket. For the amount of time the Harmony would have to plugged into the Mac rather than changing channels on the TV, it would probably make sense to temporarily give it its own socket. And to make the swap easier, consider using a USB extension cable so the socket end is always easy to reach. Finally, unless you're using that USB hub with all the other stuff hanging off it on the MBP too, I bet the different results are due to giving the Harmony it's very own USB socket on the MBP.

  • Contact sheets. Am I asking too much from LR

In my workflow I need to get 'printed' contact sheets out ASAP for public to look at, note file numbers, then view on screen > hopefully purchase.
I have produced a contact template 16up and on average we print 10-18 sheets at a time.
The time it takes to print is not viable (anything from 2 minutes (rare) - 20 minutes, average 15 mins +)
I have set to draft mode printing, increased my RAM to 12GB (from 4)
and the average file is about 3000 pixels.
I have set the Activity Monitor (Mac 10.8.4) to watch and there seems to be no 'page outs'
and the CPU and free space seem to be within their limits.
I have also tried to PDF and to Jpeg file, but this seems to take as long.
Also tried on LR3, LR4.4 & LR5 Trial, no difference.
Am I asking too much of my OS or LR.
    Any input appreciated
    Thanks
    P.S.
saw 1 or 2 other posts suggesting Draft Mode made a massive difference even to big files, but not to mine.
Pages seem to load fairly quick at first, then hang.
May be my imagination, but the time to print seems to be increasing

After much searching I think I may have found the solution ?
We were creating 1:1 previews by editing the photos before printing to contact sheets.
The 1:1 Previews is what seemed to be causing the hold up.
    So to remedy this
In Library > Library Menu > Previews > Discard 1:1 Previews > All photos
It then printed out the contact sheets at a fair rate of knots.
(I believe once you go back to loupe and zoom in, it then creates the 1:1 Preview again)
22 pages with 349 images ave. 3,500 pixels per photo = 12 seconds (compared to 20 mins to never),
    obviously + printing time.
    Quick silly question though ??
I take it if I have minimal preview settings this will not infringe the quality of the larger printed copies ?
(I take it, it is just that, a preview ?)
I would also have thought that LR would have found a solution to this before now
or at least provided some sort of info / tutorial / remedy.
Looking at the results from people having problems with this goes way back to LR2/LR3.

  • Am I asking too much of the Cisco DX 650 phone?

At the beginning of the week, I had high hopes for the DX 650.  I set up this device with the hopes that it would not be a Cius 2.0 device.  However, when trying to setup some of the non-standard calling features, the device seems to bog down and become painful to use.  Here is what I setup, or tired to setup:
    External 24" monitor
    Logitech C930 camera
    Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse
Proximity via Bluetooth to my iPhone
    VMWare Horizon client
I have to say, the Bluetooth connectivity is poor and clunky.  The iPhone would not stay connected, and the DX 650 would rarely show my phone as a second device for calling.  Contacts were synced sometimes, and if I left the room and came back, it would not connect again.  In addition, having the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse were slow when everything was connected.  The keyboard and mouse would connect, sometimes.  Before anyone judges me, I am not using the WiFi at all.
The Horizon View client is OK, but when you are in a video call, it is horribly slow.  I ultimately disconnected the Bluetooth and went back to a wired keyboard and mouse.  I also disconnected the external Logitech camera.  With all the other devices disconnected, the video calling and Horizon View client were usable, but not great.
If I reboot the phone, it is OK for a while.....
Am I asking too much of this device?  It has potential, but how can I recommend this as an all-in-one solution to my customers?  Will it get better?  I still want to test the VPN connectivity on top of all I mentioned above, but I am afraid it will be disappointing at best....
    Thanks
    Jesse

    hi Jesse,
have you tried the latest dx650 firmware? cmterm-dx650.10-2-2-23.cop.sgn
Cisco has done a huge improvement compared to old firmwares. I can understand your experience, but i was surprised, when i´ve done an upgrade the latest Software Version of the DX.

  • IMAP Mac Mail on Multiple Computers - Asking too much?

I'm trying to set up Mac Mail for someone who uses a different Mac at the office than they do at home. Yes, they could use webmail via a web browser, but can't Mac Mail be set up for this?
I tried to set them up using Mac Mail in IMAP mode so that all of their mail (inbox, sent, drafts, trash, etc.) are stored on the server but it's simply not working. Deleted mail just disappears. Trying to save a draft gives me an error message. Copies of sent messages are not being saved locally or on the server. Synchronizing the mailbox doesn't seem to work. Am I asking too much or am I just doing something wrong?
(They are not using a .Mac account, but their provider supports IMAP protocol.)

You’re welcome. Here’s an explanation of how mailboxes are supposed to appear in Mail that I’ve posted in other cases and that you may find useful as well. Let me know if there is still something you cannot figure out after reading it:
    1. Instead of grouping mailboxes by account, Mail groups mailboxes by purpose first, regardless of whether they are stored locally or on the server, then groups by account the mailboxes that don’t serve a specific purpose in Mail. If you have more than one mail account, each has its own Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk mailboxes, which appear under the respective group showing the account name instead of the real name of the associated mailbox in the filesystem.
This has the advantage of letting you choose at any time, and independently for each mailbox, whether you want to look at your Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc. mailboxes as if you had just one of them shared by all accounts (i.e. an aggregate), or look at each of the corresponding individual mailboxes separately.
    2. Each mailbox under a pre-defined group is associated with a mailbox in the filesystem whose name may or may not be exactly the same as the name of the corresponding mailbox group. By default, the name of the actual mailboxes in the filesystem associated with Sent and Trash, for example, would be Sent Messages and Deleted Messages, respectively.
    3. The association between a mailbox in a pre-defined group and the actual mailbox in the filesystem is fixed for POP accounts, but can be changed for IMAP accounts by means of Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For or the corresponding Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors > Store messages on the server setting.
    4. Mail may defer the creation of a pre-defined mailbox until actually needed to store messages there. Also, in some circumstances Mail may be unable to create or locate the actual mailbox in the filesystem (see #10 below for an example), but the association does still exist in those cases from a logical point of view, even though Mail may be unable to display or store messages there.
    5. Each and every mailbox appears once and only once in the mailbox list, be it (1) under one of the pre-defined groups with an icon that conveys its purpose and the name of the account it belongs to (if you have more than one mail account), or (2) with a generic folder icon and the real name of the associated mailbox in the filesystem if it serves no specific purpose as far as Mail goes. Under no circumstances can the same mailbox appear both ways; it’s either one or the other, depending solely on whether it serves a specific purpose in Mail or it’s treated by Mail as a generic mailbox like any other.
    6. By itself, the name of the mailbox is no indication of whether it serves a purpose in Mail. If it appears in Mail with a generic folder icon, then as far as Mail goes it’s a generic mailbox like any other, no matter what its name.
    7. For IMAP accounts, a mailbox with a generic folder icon can “disappear” and become associated with one of the pre-defined groups as a result of changing the corresponding Store messages on the server setting in Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors or doing Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For on it (server-stored mailboxes only). This, in turn, would cause the mailbox being previously used for that purpose to become dissociated from the corresponding group and “appear” as a mailbox with a generic folder icon.
    8. In addition to the account-specific mailboxes that appear with the account name under each of the pre-defined groups, Trash and Junk may also have an “On My Mac” mailbox. This is where messages deleted or marked as junk are moved if they were previously stored in a custom “On My Mac” mailbox or in a locally stored mailbox associated with an IMAP account (i.e. a mailbox for which Store messages on the server has been turned OFF in Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors).
    9. Generic mailboxes that don’t serve a specific purpose as far as Mail goes (i.e. mailboxes that appear in Mail with a generic folder icon), appear below the pre-defined groups. In principle, “On My Mac” mailboxes (i.e. locally stored custom mailboxes) would appear as top-level folders, whereas server-stored mailboxes would appear grouped under a globe icon for each IMAP or .Mac account. However, if there is no need to differentiate between “On My Mac” and server-stored mailboxes (e.g. because you only have one IMAP account and no custom “On My Mac” mailboxes), Mail will display the server-stored mailboxes as top-level folders instead, just as if they were “On My Mac” mailboxes.
    10. Some IMAP accounts use a NAMESPACE feature that Mail doesn’t handle properly and that causes server-stored mailboxes to appear as subfolders of the account’s Inbox, even though they really aren’t — see “Can't create folders, only subfolders of INBOX” in the Courier FAQ, for example. Those IMAP accounts require INBOX to be typed in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > IMAP Path Prefix for Mail to handle them properly.

  • Am i asking too much from my airport express?!

I have a belkin wireless ADSL router set up so that I can use my laptop anywhere in the house. I also wanted to print from anywhere and listen to iTunes on the stereo downstairs. Airport Express seemed perfect. I set it up as a client no problem and I can print and listen to music fine.
BUT I also have an X-box downstairs and wanted to connect it to the internet using the ethernet port on airport express. Didn't work. (hard-wiring it to the router works fine by the way)
Am I simply trying to get my airport express to do too much? Is there a way round this?
    Thanks

If you have a router that supports WDS, that doesn't automatically enable it. If you are connecting by using "Join existing network" the ethernet port always gets disabled.
Once you set up the router to use WDS by going to the WDS tab, which will be available once you change "Join network" to "Create new network" (I know, this is a bit misleading, but it's what you need to do.). You might need to add the MAC address manually, but you can try searching for your base station.
Even after you have a WDS set up, you might still need to enable the ethernet port by going to the "base station options" and turning it on. It should default to on though.

  • Ask your question.MC508LL/A power supply problems, Ask your question.MC508LL/A power supply problems, Ask your question.MC508LL/A power supply problems

I have just replaced my older IMac with a new one because of a cronic power supply problem.  Now I see this one is doing the same thing.  Is anyone else having the same issues with their MC508LL/A.

I'm with babowa there ... I would suspect the power souce, not the PSU. Where you live could be an issue depending on how reliable and 'clean' the electricity is to your home. If that is ok then it could be the wiring in your house ... if it were mine, I'd need an electrician to check it out.
Personally, I've had computers hooked to my electric service since 1995 and no UPS (despite recommendations) and never encountered a problem with the computers ... many electrical issues (brown outs, outages, etc), just been fortunate they didn't affect my machines.

  • Asking too much and getting a "stack over flow error"

I’m having AS3 create 12 random var (play1, play2, etc) and then I ask it to average the 12 vars (numbers) until I get a specific average number. When I run this in AS2 I get the “script time error, keep running?” question. I tell it to keep running and eventually AS2 finds the right set of 12 numbers to equal a specific average number. In AS3 I get a “stack over flow error”. I know that all my AS3 swf needs is just more time to find it.
    Any ideas for a fix?

  • Newbie question, am I asking too much

I wanted to check here to see if what I want to do is possible and not waste a ton of time to find that "you can't get there from here." With the immanent demise of classic, I have a bunch of family members who have lots of Macwrite documents (we held out as long as we could) that need to be converted to MS Word docs. Can you write a script complicated enough to open a batch of Macwrite documents one at a time, copy the entire contents, open a new Word document and paste the contents into it, naming it the same except for the .doc? If something like this is possible, I'll bother to learn the program or if a script already exists I'd love to see it. If this is out of the ballpark, I'd like to know that too.
    Thanks,
    Ted

I do have that hook, but I thought that only applied if trying to suspend to disk.
    Does suspend-2-ram work?
I just tried running "s2ram" (via sudo s2ram -f) and I got the same result: unable to read the root disk

  • Am I asking too much of Premier Elements?

I've used Premier Elements for the past several years, editing news reports for the Internet and sometimes even for local TV stations. However, those were short, and they were on an older machine.
Recently I got a new computer. I had to get a 32-bit machine because one of the things I need the machine for is currency trading, and some of the software I use for that does not support 64-bit. The new machine is as top-of-the-line as I could go in 32-bit, Intel Quad-core i7 processor, Radeon HD4870 video card, two 1TB hard drives, 6GB ram. With the help of a local pro technician I put it together myself, though I have to say that the process was more difficult than I anticipated. I'm fairly technically capable but I have to admit that it all the tech stuff seems to jumble in my head after a while.
To accommodate the new machine, I also upgraded from PE 3.0 to PE 7.
I am trying to edit a talent show video from my daughter's school. I'm taking video from three sources, all Sony, a MiniDV HD (HDR-HC1), a solid-state memory Handicam (DCR-SX40), and a borrowed AVCHD (HDR-SR11). I also got very clean audio straight off the sound board onto a Tascam digital recorder. The show ran about 90 minutes, but I'm including some pre-show interviews on the track as well.
I will need to create a DVD for sale to the parents.
I have been able to download all the video onto the computer and into PE. The audio track is a WAV file and was easily imported, and dropped right into the "Soundtrack".
When I play the soundtrack back during editing, it cuts out. This happens with both the sountracks from the video and with the imported WAV soundtrack. I read the other post on this problem, and I'm not sure if the responses apply here, as the computer I have is (allegedly) so fast. I tried cutting down the WAV soundtrack and videos into small (single-perforer-length) segments of three-to-five minutes, still the same problem. Also, I don't seem to be able to get sound when I export the video. I've done it in a couple of formats, still no audio. Happens when I use sound from the WAV file and audio from the cameras. Do I need to procure some specific CODECs for this?
BTW, I am syncing the WAV track up with the MC's and performers' lips. So far the tests I've performed indicate that I can successfully do this, but the sound cut-out problem is really giving me fits during that process! (If anyone is interested in a trick for doing this, I find that looking at the waveforms on the sountracks and lining them up with each other helps a lot.)
Would moving the video files to the second hard drive help solve this problem, as well as taking the machine off-line during the video process and shutting off the anti-virus, etc? I'm sure the machine is up to it, but is Premier Elements up to creating such a long show and then burning a DVD? (I sure hope so because after spending all that money on a computer I can't afford the Pro software!)
Many thanks for all help and suggestions.   -Bill

If I read the initial post correctly, you are going to DVD for you final output. Is that correct?
If so, I would re-Capture the AVCHD material as SD. The camera should be able to do that downconversion, and then PE is doing the Capture in SD as DV-AVI Type II files. For the MPEG material, I'd convert to DV-AVI Type II material, outside of PE. This will give you all DV-AVI Type II material.
Your Project Preset will then be DV, and everything edited in SD. This should make editing a breeze.
As for your Audio issue, Audio hangs, and drop-outs (provided that the source files are fine and play fine), *usually* stem from I/O issues - the ability of the HDD's and controller, to keep up with the signal. I am with you, however, that your system certainly *seems* robust enough to handle the Audio.
How are your HDD's set up? How are your various programs, and their files spread around. Things like OS, programs, Virtual Memory Page Files, PE Project files, media files, Scratch Disks, etc., can make a big difference. Let me know what the HDD utilization looks like, and I'll get a better idea of things that might help - or, maybe see no problem there at all, and we can move on to other possible issues.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

hi all I need ready code for a simple paint program today for me ics projct
plz give me a halp on this give me what you have with you and it is so good if it look like this :
Design a GUI based drawing Java application that works like a simple paint program
1-There should be a number of buttons for choosing different shapes to draw. For example, there should be a button for rectangle. If user presses the rectangle button, then he can draw a rectangle using mouse. Similarly, there should be a button for each shape(rectangle, circle, ellipse, and line etc.
2-The shapes can be filled with different colors.
3-There should be option of moving .
4- There should also be three menus including File, Shape, and Color menu.
    i. File menu can have menu items New and Exit. If user selects New, the drawing area will be cleared and all shapes will be erased.
ii. Shape menu will serve the same purpose as of feature 2 described above. It will have menu items for drawing all the different shapes. For example, there will be menu item for rectangle; so user can draw a rectangle by selecting the menu item for rectangle.
iii. Color menu will serve the same purpose as of feature 3 described above. It will have menu items for all the colors which are shown in color buttons. The user can select a color from this menu and then click inside a shape to fill it with the selected color.

This morning about 7am w/coffee Adobe space was back and could log in
Got to work where I go to a different set of forums... back to Jive community and broken log in
Now 10:20am and back to Adobe space and log in works again
It would seem that someone is doing some testing... and the tests have failed, at least for me... and this is both with IE and Firefox
I wonder how long things will work this time?

  • Power supply question or Firewire issue

    Hi
I have a workhorse Dual g4 with three internal video drives, three self powered Firewire drives and an internal Gina audio card. Recently I added a USB2 internal card and swapped my Viewsonic LCD for an Apple where the power is coming off the video cable. For the last 2 days my Firewire drives got balky. They mount but when I try to open them I get the interminable spinning beach ball. So far I am able to connect the FW drives to my G4 laptop and they seem to mount ok.
Am I asking too much from the power supply or is this a fair load?
    Could the Firewire have failed.
Last week I had a high whine and lockup (heat related?) It's been funny ever since.
Is there an app that gives the status of the hardware?
    Sorry lots of questions
    Thanks
    Enio

The XServe power supplies (like most modern systems) are rated for 100-240V, so will accept any input voltage in that range.

  • New power supply for Neo Platinum...

My first few attempts at overclocking didn't go very well but i'm thinking of trying again and figure i should get a new power supply first.
Currently i have a Vantec Stealth 420W with the following specs:
    +3.3 - 26A
    +5 - 42A
    +12 - 18A
I plan on trying out the OCZ PowerStream 520W
    +3.3 - 28A
    +5 - 40A
    +12 - 33A
     Quote
The 520ADJ boasts eight primary 4-wire Molex power connectors, another two 4-wire floppy connectors, two SATA leads, and an auxiliary connector, all of which sit on generously long lines. The 12V string sports both 4-pin and 8-pin connectors. Two of the Molex leads feature black connectors, black shielding sheaths, and capacitors and resistors behind the connectors. These are meant primarily for power-hungry video cards such as NVIDIA's 6800, and because the leads sit on dedicated circuits with no other connectors, you simply couldn't ask for cleaner power flow.
OCZ provides dials for fine-tuning each of the three power rails and places an LED indicator below each dial. A green light indicates that voltage is within 5% of optimal, yellow notes undervoltage, and red overvoltage.
Anyone using this one?  I don't want to have to buy another powersupply for a while, so if it's a bit overkill for now, so be it.  It can't be "too much", can it? any thoughts folks?
    Thanks in advance!

Im using the same powersupply.  Very nice unit, you will not be dissappointed.  I dont forsee you needing to buy another after it either.  It is rated at 520W usable, peak is actually 600+.
One thing I should note, adjusting the 3.3V rail is tricky...it doesnt take much to trip the redlight indicator...so go slow and you should be able to crank it up a bit.  12V and 5V arent as touchy.
Im running the following in my computer with no problems:
2 120MM fans, 1 80MM high speed fan, 3 HD's, 1 CD burner currently, radeon 9800 pro, audigy 2 ZS soundcard, 80mm slot blower fan, floppy drive, A64 3200 OC to 2.375Ghz, 2 Kingmax Hardcore 512MB sticks of ram....I think that covers it anyways.  No problems so far!
There is no such thing as too much (as long as its quality too much) in a power supply.

  • Playing Video files taking too much CPU processing(50 % )

    Hello everyone,
My macbook taking too much CPU processing power for playing Video file.Below shared the statistics..Is it a issue..? can you please help me here..I can't play simultaneously 2-3 MKV videos..distorted picture Quality.

          mplayer:60%
    normal(example Mp4)
Qucik Time PLayer (using perian plugin):30%
         vlc:25%
where a normal Linux system takes
mkv file with VLC : 20-25%
    Thanks in advance...

Simple thing to try would be to disable composite and see how you fare then
    Check the logs first, though
