Am I being charged for international texting?

So I am doing a masters program in Ireland, so I'm international. Everyone that I talk to back home has an iphone just like I do, and I have a question that I cannot find an answer to.
Since I'm in Ireland, I don't want to have a huge phone bill every month, so I have all forms of roaming off (voice, data, and international CDMA). I also have Cellular data off, as well as MMS and SMS messages.
I've checked under the current data usage period, and current period roaming, and the data usage is 0 . When my friend back home texts me, he says that they are sending to me as regular texts. He receives mine as regular texts as well unless I'm in a wifi area, then we are both send and receive them as Imessages.
My questions is that even with all roaming turned off, cellular, ect, I'm still able to send and receive text messages while I'm NOT in a wifi area. This only works for my friends and family that have Iphones, so I'm assuming that it means I'm okay to text them while I'm not connected to wifi?
one thing to mention, that since I'm in Ireland, my service provider at the top left of the screen no longer says AT&T. It says "Vodaphone IE" and sometimes changes to other names like Meteor, O2, and a couple others. My plan is still through AT&T, so i'm not sure why it changes over to those. Maybe that's why I'm able to send texts?
I just don't want to rack up a huge phone bill, not knowing I was accumulating international charges. Because if everything is turned off except for Imessage, and the data under cellular in settings isn't going up, then theoretically I'm not using data right? or that it should be free? I've been here about a month, and my mom pays the bill. She hasn't called to say that the phone bill was extremely large, but I don't wan't to text if there's some kind of risk. That being said, I would really appreciate some help with the above scenario that I just described, because this has me clueless.

If the messages you receive are coming in as green, then they're coming in as text messages. If you can, check your voice, data and text usage on AT&T's website - that will tell you for sure if you're being charged for anything.

Thanks for the help, Allan Sampson.
I updated itunes, shut the phone off and on, it still didn't give me blue bubbles. Kept following the suggestions on the page ...  I didn't know there was an IMessaging switch, but, shoot, it was OFF. Anyway, I toggled it on and now the text bubbles are blue again.

  • We are being charged an international transaction fee for our subscription

We are being charged an international transaction fee with our Creative Cloud subscription because it seems that Adobe is making the transaction from Dublin to avoid paying taxes in Australia (and probably everywhere else). That's fine but I don't expect to be penalised for Adobes tax avoidance practices.
I contacted them on chat to pursue this but went around on circles with the support agent who did not understand what I was saying and then did not follow through when they said that someone would be on touch with me (I wish I had kept the chat log but closed the window before I realised it wasn't automatic).
Anyone else being charged this fee in Australia? I was never told that we would be charged out of Ireland and that we may get hit with bank fees as a result. I am going to talk with our bank today and ask the ACCC and ATO what the deal is with Australian companies billing from overseas to avoid paying GST, etc.
I am happy with paying for creative cloud, it makes it more accessible but I don't want to be hit with hidden fees and charges due to dodgy accounting practices! :)

    Hi there,
I'm having the exact same issue. I am located in Australia as well.
I have been getting charged for the overseas transaction fees for 2-3 years now but I've recently discovered that Adobe Australia shouldn't charge people this fee after I spoke to my work colleagues who have the same Creative Cloud subscription.
Adobe Australia said that they withdraw the subscription fee from an Australian account, not an international account, however, my bank has confirmed that the transactions were made by an international account and it says Dublin on my tax invoices as well.
It is a bit strange that none of my work colleagues have been changed for this fee even though they have the exact same subscription.
The only difference I can think of is that they have subscribed to Creative Cloud recently (2014 and 2015) and I did it a few years ago.
Adobe said that they will investigate this issue and get back to me in a few days but I am keen to know if this problem got fixed at your end.
It seems like Adobe has been aware of this problem for at least a few years.

  • Can I FaceTime someone from another country without being charged with international fees?

Can I FaceTime someone from another country without being charged with international fees?

here is how you actually do it put your phone in air plane mode you should see it when you open the settings app then go to wifi and turn it on this will let you use Imessage to text the person for free if they have a iPhone the same should apply for face time calling but since currently FaceTime can only be done over wifi it shouldn't charge you but the method above is what many would call a precaution ether way it should connect last resort download Skype face time app from app store setup account with both devices and you can chat over 3G or wifi without getting charged also enables connection for FaceTime to ios to android just in case any reader would like to connect to an android user that has a front facing camera.

  • When am I charged for received texts?

I do not have a text plan, nor do I have all texts blocked, as I would like to be able to receive an occasional text from my children or friends. This happens 2-3 times a month, so only costs 40-60 cents. However, I also receive some spam or other unsolicited texts. Is there a way to delete these before opening them? If so, will that prevent me from being charged for them?

Thanks for the feedback. Adding to what was stated, there is a way to block spam messages from going to your device. You can go onto My Verizon to block up to five numbers or go to http://www.vtext.com and register your number. Afterward, set up your preferences for blocking unwanted text, messages from up to 15 email addresses, vtext names and Internet domain names.

  • What's with being charged for picture messages?

I got a text saying on October 14 or something like that, that we will be charged for sending/receiving picture messages now. How much is this going to cost? Also, is there going to be some kind of new plan out there that we could get to still send pictures without being charged? What will happen to the $10 messaging bundles then?

On the $10.00 plan you will have picture and text unlimited on verizon to verizon and you have 250 texts for other contracts. The message was saying if you forward three pictures to three different people would be a charge for 3 texts, but no charge if its verizon to verizon but if its from or to a different contract like ATT etc. then it would cost you 1 text for each of those three people to send and 1 for each person that received the picture or text message. Actually nothing had changed as the unlimited part its mainly for people that do not have a text plan. So don't worry about it.

  • Why I am being charged for Total Mobile Protection when I never asked for it?  I just checked my bill on My Verizon and was surprised at this additional charge.

I just checked my bill online after upgrading my phone to a iPhone 6 and now I am being charged for something called Total Mobile Protection.  Is this some kind of phone insurance or something?
I was never charged this before so was kind of upset to see it added on without my permission/knowledge (I specified to the Verizon Wireless agent in the store I went to that I only wanted the contract for the $60  2GB and Unlimited talk/text plan that I currently had.  They said that would work).
How can I get this extra $10 a month off my bill?

When you upgrade online you do have the option to deny this though the deny option is way down the page. make s it look like you have to choose an insurance option. Also I've done 2 recent upgrades in a retail store twice and both times they added the protection without asking. Luckily I always check my account so I easily removed this feature on the first day. Let's just say I won't be upgrading at this store ever again. No wonder people get mad when they upgrade multiple lines and their bill is $30, $40, $50 higher than what they a were told because of this unasked for feature.

  • I am being charged for iMessages

I am being charged for iMessages by AT&T. Most of my texts are in blue as iMessages and it says iMessage on the white line before I start typing. I only pay for 200 texts a month, so I look at my data using my AT&T app a few times a week. I looked at my AT&T app to see my data on Friday and it said I have used 170 texts. I looked today and it says I have gone over with 214. I then looked at my texts made since Friday. I had only texted non iPhone users 8 times which are green and 30 something texts with iPhone users which were blue. I contacted AT&T to resolve the problem. They say it all 214 show they are all text messages and for me to contact Apple. In order to talk with an Apple representative by phone or online I have to purchase a $29 single incident of support.
What should I do? On myiPhone my texts are iMessages in blue, but my iMessages are showing up as regular texts with AT&T. So they are charging me for them and I have gone over my 200 text a month.
    Please help!
    ~blue406

Then take a screen shot of the messages in blue and tell them to go F themselves because you have the evidence right in front of them.

  • Why am I being charged for data when connected to wifi AND not using my phone?!

WHY am I being charged for data that I'm not using? At times when I'm asleep AND my phone is connected to wifi?!  This happens at really specific, alternating times like 9:54 pm every day, or 12:01 am, 6:01 am and then 12:01pm and 6:01pm. When I called I was told  "maybe your wifi at home is disconnecting" or "maybe your phone is connecting to atnt or sprint". It's not possible that my phone is disconnecting from wifi every six hours on the dot and, at that exact time, I'm always using data. I find it hard to believe that I live in a HUGE city and my phone magically connects to other networks and I NEVER notice this. Verizon is full of LIARS (and maybe’s) and I'm not convinced that these data charges are a coincidence. I was told to turn off my cellular data to see if the problem resolves itself. Why should I alter my daily life when Verizon is clearly the one with the issue? I hope there's a class action lawsuit because Verizon is trying to get over on everyone! I need answers!

        Hello NotHappy101,
I think it's quite odd that your data usage is at very specific times. We can certainly take a closer look. Please reply to my Direct Message, so we can get some additional details.
    Thanks,

  • I have unknown charges on my account. How can I tell what I am being charged for?

I would like to know how to tell what I am being charged for. I have two .99 charges on my bank account and I am unsure as to what they are for. One in particular is from today and I have not purchased anything. I did do some app updates. Am I being charged for updating a purchased app?
I would like to know how to get the specific information of purchases that are appearing on my bank statement. I have tried searching for the reference number from my statement but did not find anything.
    Thank you!

    It could be:

I am out of the country. I turned my cellular data off and connected to wiFi . However, it is still showing that i am connected to a network.  How can i be sure that i am not being charged for roaming?

Make sure data roaming and cellular data is turned off.  If you don't want to receive calls or SMS then put your phone in airplane mode and reactivate WiFi
