Am I being spied on?

what is a processor 2.4GHz Intel Core2  Duo Startup Disk HD used for?
In network Pref. and who added it and how to get password?

In System Preferences > Sharing, turn off sharing and this other computer will drop out of your network.
If this suggestion is not relevant, because you are running a server of some kind, there is a whole forum dedicated to Servers, that you might like to seek help there. Here is one link.

• What are the Binoculars in the address bar, amI being spyed upon?

Sometimes but not always, a little pair of binoculars appear at the beginning of the address bar at the top of the display screen. Does this mean someone is spying on me? I have run virus scans but nothing shows up!

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you

• Am I being spied upon?

Hello,
Without sounding like a paranoid fool, and keeping a long story short, I (and a few friends) have reason to believe that a particular person who can get access to my iMac desktop on occasion, MAY have set up something so that they can spy on any of my online activities from their own PC or Mac. Yes, it's one of those great relationship problems so we live together and share the same router. I've changed my email passwords several times along with the Mac's password, and I have the firewall set up. But within a few days this person will drop a remark or reference a webpage in just such a way that tells me they may have read one of my emails or know a webpage that I visited, but it's never quite enough detail that I can call them on it. Either it's just a whole series of coincidences in which case I would feel ashamed of thinking like this, or they are really very good at playing some type of distorted game with me.  My friends think it's the latter. It's very possible he has enlisted the help of a very computer savvy friend to assist. All I need is real proof either way and I can deal with the outcome. I am not computer tech savvy, but I can find the reports in Console and I can use Terminal if told what to type.
I have a previous post about a first time boot up crash which may be related to this whole fiasco.
Below is some data that I thought might help, or not, but if anyone can help me with this, let me know what you need and I will be glad to send anything else along. By the way, my computer name is first-last's-imac but in Console, my nickname appears which is bayotter only I can't figure out how that got there since I thought it's supposed to show the computer name. Also, recently I noticed that the NetBios name was changed from a series of letters and numbers to simply 192. Our IP router address is 192.168.1.1, my iMac IP is 192.168.1.4, and we have an Apple Airport Extreme plugged into the router with IP 192.168.1.12.
Thank you in advance.

AND

I appreciate the advice from both of you. I don't want to make a terrible decision with my life based on suspicion. I need the proof. It's just who I am.
I do have some additional information that may shed some light on this. This is the log when I signed on tonight. The name I use for the sign in is First Last, then password; hence, my machine is called first-last's-imac. That is reflected in the log file. But further down, my nickname bayotter appears as a user. I don't use that on this computer but everyone knows my nickname. And the words Failed to determine kerberos principal name, which someone said means that an incorrect password was attempted on a log in. Does this mean anything?

• How can I tell if my Iphone is being spied on or if it has been jailbroken?

I'm trying to find out if my Iphone has been jailbroke and had one of the Iphone spy apps installed. I left a my phone in a friends car and since then it has just been slow and he is pretty tech saavy so I wouldn';t be suprised if he did. will a restore and manually inputting my contacts erase all apps installed?? I just recently today updated to OS 4
Many Thanks,
john

If you're worried about your friend compromising your phone, restore it in iTunes.

• Am I being spyed on?

Recently I have started to get pop ups on my computer daily about someone requesting access to my computer. It shows an IP address and lets me allow or block the hostname, i always block, but different users seem to attempt to access my computer via skype everyday. After sometime, I decided to copy the IP address and plug it in to a tracker online. they trace to different internet companies. I would like to solve this issue as it has become very concerning not only for my own privacy, but my safety. I would appreciate if I could get some help on this, thanks.

Sounds like your Mac is getting a new host name. It can happen via VPN's, DHCP servers or other network connection types.
You may want to speak to the network admin to see if they are assigning DNS names on the local network, it may be innocuous.
Have you altered how it connects to the network?
Disable wifi, remove any ethernet cable reboot - it should return to normal, reconnect to the network & you may see it change again (check via another reboot).

• Trying to understand iMac 10.6.8 better and find out if someone is spying on my computer.

Would like to find out if my computer is being spied on. Trying to understand info in "About my mac" means. Came across something in software Extensions...MACFramework: It says: Version: 10.8.0, Get Info String: MAC Framework Pseudoextension, SPARTA, Inc, 10.8.0, Kind: Universal,
Location: /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext/Plugins/MACFramework.kext, Kext Version: 10.8.0, Load Address: (built-in to the kernel), Valid: Yes,
Authentic: Yes, Dependencies: Satisfied.
What does this mean?
How/Where and What do I look for to see if someone is spying on my computer? And if so how do I remove it?

The Mandatory Access Control Framework is part of OS X, and is not spyware.
If you want to know if someone is spying on your computer, install Little Snitch. It will tell you when anything new is trying to send something outside of your system.

• Terrible prices, super cookie spying, & ridiculous surcharges.

So I'm thinking about leaving Verizon after 10 years. There's really no dispute that they have the best coverage, but the immoral practices from those higher up make me sick. Not only do they pass the buck along to us when in comes to the taxes that the government charges them, but then they make us pay the taxes they they have to pay on their sales and services. Have you heard that we been being spied on and they continue to do so? Two word. super cookies.
Super cookies -  Whether anyone knows it or not Verizon is using what are called super cookies to track your every move on your smart phone. They know what websites you go to, which ones you like the most, how long you linger on those pages as well as track a plethora of other important information that can be sold for a giant financial gain. Every other cellular company that had been using these "super cookies" have been called out as violating its customers privacy and have hence stopped tracking their customers like the gestapo. So how about Verizon wireless? Oh ya that's right your still tracking us and only said that you'll give us the option to "opt-out" when you figure out a way to do that... So as of now there is no real convenient way to get you to stop tracking us. WAY TO PUT YOUR CUSTOMERS FIRST!
I've been seeing this all over HULU "2 lines + 10GB for $110" So is this false advertisement? Try to find this on their website all you'll spend a lot of time for nothing because it doesn't exist... Not only is it probably for new customers only (because honestly who cares about us), but you're not going to find it online.
I have a 2 smart phones on my account, 10 GB, and end up paying $183 every month which is insane! When I upgraded my phone they added a kind $32 dollars for 2 months... Ya that's right, I go spend a few hundred dollars and BUY a smart phone from Verizon and then they turn around and hike my bill for two months when nothing has changes but my device.
The long and the short of it is Verizon is MONEY HUNRGY and could give $.02 about their customers. The fact that you're trying to flood the market with false ads on TV to get your customers from a mass exodus says it all... I'd love to know how many customers you've lost since Sprint has offered to cut everyones bill in half???
I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but I'm looking at sprint and I'm not going to continue to get robbed! Verizon this what pride falling looks like... enjoy losing customers faster than you can blink!
So here's my question. What can you do for us Verizon? The ones that pay your payrolls, upgrade your networks, and keep your storefronts rolling. I'll never complain about your service which is why i haven't left yet, but what are you willing to do for me. How can we all unsubscribe from super cookies, and when will you stop charging us ridiculous fees on top of our plan?

You can opt out of super cookies, which is a good idea as they are rumored to cause extra data use.
2 lines + 10GB for $110".    IT is fact, all customers on More everything share plans, including yourself are paying this price.
AT&T has the same adds for the same service.
in fact all carriers are now  ala' carte, 1.  you pay for a line, 2.  you pay for a data pool, 3.  you buy your own phone.
That last part has completely escaped you.
All customers, on all carriers must buy their own phones.   T- Mobile requires customers to buy their phone at full retail, no 2 year subsidy, no installment plan.
The ala'  carte plan structure is fair for everyone.

• Questions on privacy and safari, browser history; top sites; private browsi

In one thread someone suggested that those concerned about the privacy of their web browsing and its history try Private Browsing. What are the consequences of Private Browsing? Does Private Browsing interfere with some of the web page features or javascript from working when I'm trying to access a page that has java or Flash? Will my bank's website load ok etc? I guess I was a little worried it would stop the showing of the last page visited and if so then hopefully that won't stop some sites from functioning.
Is Private Browsing the best way to go all around for those concerned about privacy loss in Safari or does it not really help much? I wonder why it isn't the default.
I want to be able to use my browser to access sites that don't load well when I use Firefox with NoScript, such as bank sites, but I do not want my browsing history to stay in view constantly, and I'm also upset at seeing it want to "learn" my browsing habits and try to suggest sites for me without my setting it to do this.
For this reason I will be setting Firefox or any other browser I feel is more private than Safari, possibly Camino, to be my default browser. I will probably only be using Safari when a site won't work without it, same as when I used to settle for Internet Explorer on my windows computer when Firefox didn't work.
I'm also concerned that I can't get that Google search bar out of my browser. I don't want Google keeping tabs of every site I visit. I'm not sure if Google has access to tracking every place I go if I never put any text into the Google search bar or how far into bed with Google Apple has now gone but I'm afraid of the privacy invasion possibilities.
Perhaps Google gets no info if I do not type anything into the google search bar. I wish I could drag it off the menu bar however. (If I want to go to google, I know how to type google.com for crying out loud).
I hope Apple will hold the line on its partners re: privacy in products like iPhone and Safari that work with its partners regardless of their tendencies to disrespect privacy.
Does anyone know if the fact that this Safari software wants to learn what my favorite sites are affects outside parties including Apple, Google, and/or others possibly getting access to info on my browsing habits?
If i allow the Top Sites page to work, will it just be something I MYSELF have access to the info on or are the URLs of my favorite sites reported to Apple, Google, or others?
Does hitting RESET clear things out in this regard? I'd like to use these tools if I could be sure that using Safari doesn't turn the computer into a spyware tool for outside entities, commercial interests and governmental interests to mine data from.

Barry Hemphill wrote:
Hello r:
If you think Safari, Firefox, or anything else will mask your browsing habits from someone who really wants to know, you are not being realistic.
I tend to discount justifications of privacy encroachments I sometimes encounter to the effect of "snooping is done by certain commercial and governmental parties as the way things 'just are', so shut up and don't worry". Customers who do not air their concerns and questions cannot have any expectation that the developer will be aware of their concern if they sit mute.
I sometimes pay for additional software to protect my privacy. I also use Firefox with Noscript and adblocking third party software rather than just sit with what the big corporations leave me with; there is a third party program for Safari I tried called PithHelmet for example, but then it seemed to not be loaded with the new Safari update and its developer dud not provide me any communication (although I got help here on how to find the program so I could remove it); so I may not use Safari as much compared to whatever browser I find has better privacy and security measures.
If you go to the Safari help menu and enter +"private browsing,"+ you will find a complete description of what that function does for you. In answer to one of your questions, it is not a default because one loses a good deal of functionality. I would be most perturbed if that was made the default.
Ok, I will try to learn the functionalities lost, thanks.
You can set the history to be deleted after one day (or longer). If you are concerned, it is quite easy to clear history before you sign off.<</div>
I've been using RESET to clear my history in the past; I assume it still works although Reset doesn't seem to permanently make certain cookies with future expiration dates go away permanently, which I find come back later even without my visiting a site for weeks and this was happening in the previous version of Safari too.
You can remove the Google search box (or anything else) from the menu bar. Right click on it. One option is +"remove item."+
That doesn't work in terms of just removing the Google search bar at the top right, I see.
I did not want to lose my blank for typing a URL; I only want the thing out to the right that says Google on it, which seems to use Google's search engine to go away. I certainly hope that every time I type a URL into the blank at the left top (which is not the part over to the top right that says Google and a magnifying glass) that I'm not having Google track my URLs I visit like they would if I put a search term into the blank at the top right, but maybe it does since the two are forcibly linked.
I guess I'd have to try Command L - Open Location in the Find menu if I want to try to go to a URL without using the URL blank at the top left I normally type in. I would only want to go to that trouble if typing in the top left blank for URLs results in Google tracking my URL visits like they certainly would if I typed in the top right google tool bar and hopefully Open Location does not result in the same issue.
if i allow the Top Sites page to work, will it just be something I MYSELF have access to the info on or are the URLs of my favorite sites reported to Apple, Google, or others?
I seriously doubt that Apple (or anyone else) is "reporting" anything about you to anyone. As you are no doubt aware, most web sites store cookies on your system when you visit that site. The information stored varies, but you can, of course, block cookies if you wish.
I have the ability to block cookies, and I use Noscript a lot too with Firefox (although that set up does not always work with a few webpages here and there, so sometimes I have to use Safari or Camino). I use Safari less and less because there is no Noscript type of third party software for it. The only time I feel I have no choice but to use Safari on my Mac is when I go to my Mobileme account.
My concern is of Top Sites "learning" my favorite sites and displaying to me the names of a lot of suggested URLs, as to who else is receiving that data; hopefully no one. Maybe I'll get to where i find info explaining that Apple and Google aren't collecting data about my "top sites" if I use that feature.
It's just that there has been an increasing amount of privacy intrusion in the commercial realm combined with a corporate arrogance in terms treating consumers as though there is no need to make any assurances or explanations to consumers to help them trust the privacy. Instead we get browbeaten by various parties about how stupid or obvious we are if we ask a question to remind the corporation it's an issue to those of us who want to feel comfortable with the privacy of the software we use.
I'll try to use the Feedback form to ask as well.
At the risk of stating the obvious, it is quite easy to find out all sorts of information about an individual if one is interested. If you are really concerned, I suggest you severely limit your use of the Internet.
I may well limit my use of the internet if what you say is true that there is no way to do any reading on the internet without being spied on by commercial and governmental interests.
thanks

How do I do this?
-1. Uninstalling any third-party plug-ins or enhancements for the application that's quitting unexpectedly. When you update an application or Mac OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you previously installed may not be compatible any longer.
Checked to updates for Address Book software – none, however there was an update for OSX to 10.4.8 - should I do this?.
Disconnected all other devices (should I have to do this?? Printer? Speakers?)

Running Apple Hardware Test, on a disc that came with your computer. If you just installed hardware, such as additional memory, Apple Hardware Test can tell you if it's defective. If you can't find Apple Hardware Test, take your computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

• Systemd and Webcam and Suspension on Lid Closing

Yesterday I finally switched to systemd and two problems came along.
The first one is that my computer now suspends when I close the lid. The screen goes dark and I have to hit buttons, this didn't happen before. Oh, now that I write this post I remember that there was an xscreensaver update, and maybe it could be related.
The second one is that the webcam light now turns on randomly at times. I might be going paranoid, but I just don't like it, I feel like I'm being spied on. I am sure no Kernel update caused this too. How can I blacklist/rmmod my webcam driver/module? I don't know how to find it, and because I'm on a laptop I can't remove it. I could tape it, but I'm looking for a cleaner solution.
Any ideas? Thank you in advance.
After some testing, I discovered that the webcam light is turned on ONLY when I get back from a "suspension". So, the issues are related.

For the first one: Its probably not related to xscreensaver. Check
/etc/systemd/logind.conf
and
man 5 logind.conf
That worked, thanks a lot!
However, I can't start "xinit" on tty1 now. It says (davidarch is my hostname):
davidarch login: [OK] Started Network Manager.
        Starting WPA Supplicant
[OK] Started WPA Supplicant
And then it just sits there and I have to start X on tty2.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.

• Anyone else see that MyVerizon Data Totals Do Not Match Detail?

We have a 6 GB  share everything plan for 5 devices.  I used the My Verizon app on the phone before I went to bed last night  to look everyone's total data usage,  and it tells me  halfway into my billing cycle, that wer are at 2.5 gigs. All well and good.  But then not an hour later I am awaked by the beep of an incoming ttext message and  email from Verizon that says our usage is now 75% of  our allowance.  WHAT?
Next AM I log into My Verzon on the PC, not the phone.. We are still at 2.5 gigs according to the grand total on the report.  I then go into each line to see who is using how much and at the bottom,  I select, download to spreadsheet, for each line. . I now have detailed,  date and minute info on how many kilobytes or megabytes were used for the billing period to date  I add them all up for each line and sum all the lines together and whaddaya know, our total usage is 3.9 gigs.  Thats 64% of  allocation, not 75%, but its sure more than 2.5 gigs,
I place the call into customer service, how come  the text and email warnings do not match how much data you show in the My Verizon app or in the detailed spreadsheets of every single data transaction on each of our phones when placed into a spreadsheet. Initially the rep looked at the same general report I did and assured me my usage was only 2.5 gigs.  So why the warnings and why does the detail show something different from the grand totals in the app?
Was placed on hold while they did research.  After a bit, the rep came back and said they don't know why the totals do not match, Verizon does think there may be a glitch with the warnings that go out,  however they are going to do some research and will call me back in four days.   Well, I figured this was a bigger problem on their side then one phone call would solve, so no suprise there.  The rep also opined that the detailed usage spreadsheets probably reflects non billable usage, that is, usage will on WIFI. Incredulous, I asked, does this mean Verizon is tracking how much data I use while I am on WIFI and not even on their network? (Am I and my family being spied on?)  Not sure, was the answer, they will get back to me on that one.
I look forward to the promised call.
However, I am very concerned that with being on a limited data plan and nobody has any real idea how much data is used,  the tools furnished to us to measure how much we consume may be unreliable and totally inaccurate.  We will see what they say.  Anyone else?

The app isn't always up to date. Neither is the website it will tell you the last time they have for each phone usage. We have multiple smartphones never had an issue will data billing being wrong. No Verizon doesn't count wi-fi usage. No Verizon is not spying on you. Verizon couldn't care less how many "lol cats" pictures you look at everyday. The data meter on my phone( not the Verizon app the actual data app on my Android phone ) matches what Verizon says I will say 97% or more.

• Alternative to skype

With Skype being bought by MS, what I feared happened. more and more free features are being removed and need to be paid for. There is also the question of being spied on.
Is there a good alternative we can use, that works also for non-mac users as well as Mac users and is basically free?  I need features like sending files, desktop sharing and video calls.
Any experiences? Suggestions?
Thanks

• How to Record a video message (iChat) in messages?

I use to record iChat's with my grand children, but after upgrading to Mavericks, and their move to MESSAGES...
The option to Record Video Chat does not seem to be available, Is this true?  and if so...
1) is there a work around?
2) or another piece of software that allows recording of a video chat?
OR
if it is still available, how do I get the option to show up on my menu?
Thanks for your help...

Hi,
I got Screeny in Mountain Lion and it works in Mavericks.
I see Joe M has put up the Feedback link which is advisable.
(you have to add your specs to the free text area as the drop downs for the version have never bben up to date or even in sync with the OS drop down).
As to why Apple changed this ?
Unclear.  The boards specifically say speculation is not allowed.
However.
1) the app initially did not request that the Viewee agreed
2) there have been many instances including schools on pupils who have school devices being "spied" on.
3) internet related privacy is tending to be increased.

• My Macbook has been hacked (Not just freaking out like most 'hack' post btw)

I have had a 'friend' send me screen shots of my computers current activity as well as mock things I have said in conversations on facebook. (I believe he/they can even hear the audio I am currently listening to or playing. 'Believe' being the wrong word seeing that i know they can.) I have even had 'friends' describe what I'm wearing... I have looked into this a little bit and know of keylogger softwares and whatnots but I am having trouble identifying this on my computer.
Multiple people are in on this and all are viewing my computer on some sort of site...
I have known for quite sometime I am being spied on but haven't cared much until recently because it is starting to jeopardize my work.
Please help. Again, this is a factual.

Can anyone spot anything out of the ordinary in my Activity Monitor screen shots? I am definitely a Mac 'tech' newbie.. Any help would be appreciated.

gumsie, how would they get ahold of your iSight without giving permission.
We don't know what he or his friends might have installed - and there are programs that will do it. If they know what he's wearing and they can't see in, they either have X-Ray vision, ESP or a camera somewhere. I've discounted the first two.
You don't have to erase everything if that's the case.  You're suggesting overkill.
Backing up data followed by a reinstall is pretty painless I think. Takes an hour but easy enough.
And iPad 6?????????
Sarcasm, I don't remember seing any hardware details.
Personally, I think that kind of intrusion, although funny to whomever is doing it needs to be dealt with very decisively. In that situation I would just start over, changing user names and passwords.
Overkill? Maybe to you. If you've ever been in that kind of situation you might not think so.

• Why Firefox doesn't store cookies enough?

I am using some websites that I used to visit before with old version of Firefox and I had to delete those website cookies but it takes to long to cookies stored that much and need to be delete. but in new version I have to delete the cookies after a few times visiting those websites. What is the problem. It really freaks me out.

Cor-el,
Deleting the cookies.sqlite file didn't help. I also tried disabling my extensions (I only had one enabled), and addons, both were unsuccessful. Earlier you said firewalls and anti-virus programs might cause a problem. What should I do about that? Is it possible that I'm being spyed on by someone? Thanks so much for all your help.
