Am I connected to my Airport Express or Airport Extreme?

I just set up my Airport Express to extend my AEBS and am not sure which device I am connecting to on my iPad. Is there a way to find this out?
I am only getting one bar on the iPad, even though I am sitting ten feet from the Express. The light is a solid green on the Express.
I set it up as a WDS network because the Express can't handle 802.11n.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Open AirPort Utility and click on your AEBS. In the window to the right, you'll see the AirPort ID of the AEBS. Do the same for the AirPort Express.
Now, position your laptop near the AirPort Express and hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the BSSID. That should match the AirPort ID of the AirPort Express.
If you do the same thing near the AEBS, then you should see the AirPort ID of the AEBS.

External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware on Extreme as well as both of my Airport Expresses. Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

  • Saving files to a hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme

I just upgraded to Leopard. I am unable to use Backup v 3.1.2 to save files to a hard drive i have connected to my Airport Extreme. Previously, using Tiger i was able to perform this task.
I use Finder and see my airport express network and my external hard drive. However, when i run my backup jobs using Backup the program can not located the external hard drives.

The discussion was helpful. My hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme is now recognized and i can backup files to a folder called 'Backups'. However, i am only capable of saving to this one folder. When i try to create subfolders and select one of them as my location in the Backup program i get an error message; "the selected location is not a valid destination". Any idea how to get around this problem?
Many thanks for the quick response to my previous mail.

  • Which External Drives are compatible with Time Machine.  I plan to utilize it for backups and to connect to an Airport Extreme.

MBP Retina, 15 inch, Late 2013. Intel Core i7.  OSX 10.9.4
Which External Hard Drives are compatible with Time Machine.
I plan to use one drive for automatic backups connected to an Airport Extreme.
The connection can be USB or Ethernet and should be expandable.
    OR
should I just buy the Time capsule and avoid the compatibility, connection and interference issues.
    Thanks

    Hi Kappy,
I just saw that on the Apple Support site that "Time Machine is not supported with USB hard drives that are connected to an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme device", just as you have suggested.
Why is the newest model of the Airport Extreme, which is the model I have, an exception to the Time Machine compatibility?
The following information is from Apple website:
    Time Machine works with:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard drive (any model)
External USB hard drive connected to AirPort Time Capsule (any model)
An external hard drive connected to your Mac
Use the Time Machine pane of System Preferences to choose your backup disk(s).
    Additional Information
Time Machine is not supported with USB hard drives that are connected to an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme device.

  • Setup and connections for 3 airport extremes and 2 switches?

I'm finally getting ethernet wiring in my house rather having to rely on just wireless, but due to the lath and plaster walls I'll still end up having a separate Airport Extreme 802.11ac unit on each floor, otherwise the signal drops off dramatically with dead spots. I'm assuming that I should no longer do an extended network between the airport extremes, but I'm not sure of the proper wiring between the ethernet switches I'll have, the airport extremes, etc. either. Here's the gear...
    2nd floor
    cable modem
    8 port ethernet switch
main airport extreme, should provide DHCP and NAT
cable modem plugs into the main switch
airport extreme plugs into the main switch
    1st floor
    airport extreme
there will be an ethernet cable from the basement ethernet switch to the 1st floor unit, which is the only feasible hardwire connection that I can make unless I pull a second long run of ethernet from the second floor, go to the basement and then back over to the first floor connection spot.
    Basement
    airport extreme
    second 8 port ethernet switch
there will be an ethernet cable running from the 2nd floor ethernet switch to the basement switch
There are also additional airport express boxes attached to audio equipment and an AppleTV attached to an AV receiver for TV. Various printers, game consoles, etc. will plug into the ethernet switches.
As described above, all connections are going to the switches, not coming out of the main airport extreme and going to another airport extreme.
First of all, is the wiring described make sense or should it be handled differently?
Secondly, rather than an extended network, since I'll have hardwire ethernet connections between switches to all of the airports, what is the proper network topology to use in the airport utility? Does each of the three airports end up being their own wireless network, but just sharing the same name for 802.11 b/g, n, and ac? Any links to help me figure this out or do I need to make an Apple genius appointment?

    2nd floor
    cable modem
    8 port ethernet switch
main airport extreme, should provide DHCP and NAT
cable modem plugs into the main switch
airport extreme plugs into the main switch
What is the make and model number of the modem?
If it is a simple modem....(not a modem/router or gateway device)....you cannot have an Ethernet switch between the simple modem and the AirPort Extreme.
Instead, the modem must connect to the AirPort Extreme, and the Ethernet switch then connects to the AirPort Extreme.
However, if your "modem" is a modem/router or gateway device.....you could connect the Ethernet switch to the modem/router......but you would not configure the AirPort Extreme to provide DHCP and NAT.....since the modem/router or gateway would already be providing those services.
Let's get this clarified before we go any further, since the entire network will depend on this.

I have my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive which is connected to my airport extreme, I wish to share my iTunes library over my network, I can do this with my laptop, but not with my iPad, can anyone tell me if it is possible

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

  • I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extrem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptops hard drive??

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port).  I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive?  I don't have enough space to do that.

How did you move the music to the external drive?  What exactly is on the drive?  The entire iTunes folder or only music?  If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier.  If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

  • Is it possible to have two hard drives connected to my airport extreme and use one to store my itunes library/iphoto and the other to backup via time machine?  Will the second (larger) drive back-up both my mac HD and my other external airport drive?

For the past year I've been using an external hard drive (HD1) connected to my airport extreme as the back-up location for time machine.  This has worked fine without any issues.  What I would like to do now is to move my itunes and iphoto libraries off of my laptop (space constraints) and store them on a second external hard drive (HD2) connected to the airport extreme.  I have successfully connected the second hard drive using a Belkin powered USB hub.  What I am wondering is if I direct my time machine back-ups to HD1 will it back-up both my mac HD as well as HD2?  I apologize if this has already been answered but i've read conflicting responses on various message boards and a number of responses were dated so I wanted to make sure I received the latest information.
    thank you

That may be true, but you need to know that backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.  Do not be surprised if those backups suddenly turn up corrupted.
What I am wondering is if I direct my time machine back-ups to HD1 will it back-up both my mac HD as well as HD2?
No.  Time Machine cannot back up from any network location.  The 3rd-party utilities CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.

  • Can i have two internet connections connected to two airport extremes separately without disturbing the home sharing option.

can i have two internet connections connected to two airport extremes separately without disturbing the home sharing option. i want to have both the airport extremes to use a single imac for streaming music or video to my apple tv's at different places where one apple tv is in the range of one airport extreme.it's not a problem if both airport extremes have different wifi id's with separate internet. The imac which i use for streaming the music and videos is only in the range of only one airport extreme.is it possible if i can stream music or videos to my apple tv which is not in the range of same airport extreme which i use for imac but in the range of other airport extreme.
Finally what i need is i want to use two internet networks as my highest possible internet bandwidth is about 1mbps.and i know that i cant mix both the networks and make it as 2mbps.

Yes, that is possible. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details on how.

  • Can a time machine usb drive backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme*

can a time machine usb drive conected to my mac book backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme ?

Hi Adam, if you think yoiur HD may be failing you could do a TM restore onto the new disk. I would rather see you do a clone either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.Of your internal drive. That way you have a bootable backup in case it does fail.
btw - what are the symptoms of your failing drive?

  • HT201250 Can I use Time Machine to backup a LaCie Hard Drive connected to an Airport Extreme onto a My Book that is connected directly to a Mac Mini?

I have a LaCie 2TB hard drive connected to a Airport Extreme Base Station.  I also have a 1TB MyBook connected to a Mac Mini.  My question is can you backup selected files (photos) from the LaCie drive to the MyBook drive using Time Machine, or any other software?  If it will cost a fortune, I guess I can always just copy the newer files over.

Thank you for such a lightning-fast response Niel :-)  Can I just double check with you the following ...?
The external drive where my iPhoto library is located has three partitions - Time Machine Backup, Pictures (where the iPhoto library is located) and SuperDuper Bootable Clone.
When you say 'Remove the external drive from the list of items set to be excluded from the backup, and then add everything else on it' - am I correct in thinking that I should remove Pictures partition from the items to be excluded but leave the Time Machine Backup and SuperDuper Bootable Clone as excluded items?
On my 2TB external drive (the one I'm backing up to) there are 5 partitions - Time Machine Backup, SuperDuper Clone, Pictures, Photo Archive and Document Archive.  The Time Machine Backup is 700GB of which I still have 473GB available - when I include the Pictures folder that contains the iPhoto library that will use up another 148GB but I think there's still plenty of room to use it.
When you say if the partition contain the iPhoto library isn't dedicated to it it may be easier to create one which is, the only item I have on the Pictures volume is the iPhoto library so I think that it's dedicated to it.  I was going to add images from the Pictures folder on my MacBook Pro but haven't done so at this stage so I won't do so.  It wouldn't matter though, would it, if I copied the images from the Pictures folder on my MBP to the 'Photo Archive' partition of the EHD?
Thank you once more for your reply.

  • I already have a hard drive connected to my airport extreme, and ws wondering if i could use it as a network storage device

I already have a hard drive connected to my airport extreme, and ws wondering if i could use it as a network storage device. If so would I have to format it with two partitions , one for time machine and the other for network storage. Aprreciate any advice

If you have the hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme....it is a network storage device.
One issue that you may want to think about is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a hard drive at the USB port at the AirPort Extreme.
In spite of this, some users who try this are able to make it work. Others have some limited success and some have no success.
It's not supported....so there will be no help from Apple in the event of problems.
If you decide to proceed with this, make sure that the partition for Time Machine backups is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as other formats will not work with Time Machine.
Having a secondary backup plan would also be something that you might want to consider.

  • HT201250 Time machine back up using a external hard drive connected to the Airport extreme

How can I setup a time machine back up using a external hard drive connected to the Airport extreme? Even better for time managment purposes I want to use the Eithernet Thunderbolt connection for the first back up and then through the wifi there after for daily routine Time Machine back ups.

You can attach a hard drive, but Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port at the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple, so it's not possible to say what your actual results might be.
If you decide to try this, it would be wise to have a secondary backup plan in place as well.

I have a 3rd party hard drive with movies on it ,it is connected to my airport extreme. The AE is connected to my tv via ethernet cable. Can I stream my movies to the Tv ?

    Not without a player..
The AE is a dumb file server.. the hard disk you plug in is an even dumber hard disk.
There are no smarts in this setup.. not even DLNA. So the TV would have to be an extremely smart one to read raw files on a network drive.. none do that I know of.
A solution is WD live TV.. it can read files from just about any file source on network and play them to the TV.
Nothing apple makes will do that.. ATV is a streamer not a media player. Everything in the Apple world is tied up with itunes. So you must have a computer running itunes to use it.
You can download a more generic player for ipad, and put that as part of the network.. but you still need ATV to display the video.
