Am i duplicating my pictures?

Hi-
I downloaded a bunch of pictures from my dropbox (about 2gb) and dropped them into a folder in "documents."
Then, I dragged those folders from "documents" to the "events" folder in iphoto.
Am I duplicating the pictures on my hard drive?
I really just want one copy in iphoto, but I am a new Mac user, and I don't understand how files are stored yet. Does iphoto have it's own storage folders? Or is it just an application to view the photos that you have in other folders on your hard drive?
Thanks!

Yes, by default, iPhoto copies the files to its Library.
Or is it just an application to view the photos that you have in other folders on your hard drive?
No, it's a database specially designed for organising your Photos.
You can set iPhoto to work with photos in their current location but I strongly caution against it, especially for a new Mac user and a new iPhoto user.
*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

  • I duplicated a picture and now iPhoto (11) is cloning that picture replacing all the other photos and only when I click directly on them I can see the real picture! How can I solve the problem without losing any saved picture? Shall I re-install? Thanx

I duplicated a picture selecting CMD and D but, suddenly, iPhoto (latest version '11) started cloning that picture and replacing all the other photos with it.
Only when I click directly on one photo I can open it and see the real picture it is.
But the preview is always the duplicated one...
I tryed to duplicate another picture just to see if it turned out ok but the only changement was the duplicated picture!
I started repeating the second duplicated one instead of the previous one but my issue remained the same.
So, how can you help me to solve this problem without losing any saved picture?
    Shall I re-install iPhoto completely?
Thank you very very much in advance!!

As Larry says, restoring the back up is the fastest and best solution. Otherwise:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Duplicated 9000 pictures how get rid of them

duplicated 9000 pictures in iphoto.how take the copys away again??

You can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: i photo has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only diplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have diffferent file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • IPhoto's duplicating my pictures

Hello, I have two issues here, please be kind and bare with me:
    Issue 1
I was downloading some new photos from my camera today. I use a 256 mb compact flash card but it still holds many of my old photographs. Today I just wanted to download the new ones so I plugged it in and waited for the 'duplicate warning' message I had been getting before, but I got no message at all. It just kept downloading ALL of the pictures including the ones I already had in my hard drive. What happened? On previous ocassions I had selected the "don't import' option when iPhoto found duplicated pictures. Now I have two of each! It is very annoying to delete the duplicates by hand, but I guess I'll do it unless someone has a suggestion here.
    Issue 2
Can I upgrade my 5.0.4 version of iPhoto to version 6? I ask because I downloaded the upgrade, but when I try to install it, I keep getting a message that says that my hard drive does NOT have an iPhoto application file. But it does! What's with that?
Has this happened to anyone else?
    I'm using version 5.0.4
    Thanks for any help!

    freshy:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Others have had that problem with the duplicate warning not getting activated for downloads, both in V5 and V6. In the future you might have to use Image Capture, in the Applications folder, to manually select those files on the memory card to import.
You need to buy iLife 06 in order to get iPhoto 6. The various V6 updaters only work on an earlier version of iPhoto 6.

  • Span picture across multiple pages

Besides using "careful cropping," does anyone know of a way to take a given picture and span its parts across multiple pages when printing? The lagest format I can print is 8.5x11", but I am trying to print an exploded view of a picture that would ideally be four by four 8.5x11" pages or four pages across and six deep. Regardless, I was only able to get it to work by carefully duplicating a picture four times and then cropping it into four equal and lined up 4x6 sections and then printing each 4x6 on an 8.5x11" sheet.

    Leo,
I'm not sure I would have done this with columns. Because of your desire to link from one piece of text to another, in all three columns, I would use linking text boxes. Each of the three boxes on a page will be independent of each other, but can be linked to the boxes on the following pages. Does that seem like what you're looking for?

  • IPhone Pictures mixed up

Has anyone noticed that after 1000 photos on the iPhone, whether deleted or not, that the PC will start duplicating the pictures as it reads them from the iPhone? It seems we have a bug in the 1000 digit column of numbering files.
Is there a fix for this? Please help!

This happens when accessing through explorer not necessarily camaera wizard.

  • Is there a way to use iPhoto and *not* have it import photos?

    Hi there,
I'm transitioning from a PC to a Mac and everything is going fairly well -- overall a better user experience. One question I have is, is there a way to use iPhoto without having it import photos? My main issue is that currently iPhoto imports all the photos that I want to view/edit in iPhoto and copies them to it's own folder structure. I like to manage my pictures in a folder structure that I define, so I already back up my photos to another location and now I'm finding that iPhoto is just duplicating the pictures that I already have where I want them, sucking up precious space on my SSD.
So is there a way for me to just point iPhoto to a folder, make my edits on those photos, and have iPhoto automatically save those changes to the original folder I pointed it to, instead of duplicating the photos in it's own folder structure?
It occasional things like this that makes me miss some Windows features. In this case, I miss Windows Photo Gallery.

Hm, ok so if I edit my photos (adjust brightness etc) in iPhoto and then export it, does it export with the brightness changed, or does it just export the original?
It exports whichever you choose - the edited version or the original.
However, am I the only one with trust issues with importing all my photos into iPhoto? I'm scared the library will get corrupted, etc.
NO you're not the only one. The protection against any data corruption is a good back up, and you need that for any data on any computer running any OS. But in the case of iPhoto, remember too that the original files are stored exactly as they are imported, in folders, in the filing system.
that when I go to export the photos, there's a LOT of duplicate file names that the export chokes on, which makes it very tedious, no, painful, for me to export a large number of photos.
Explore the options under File Name when you export from iPhoto using the File -> Export command

  • Photo library on Time Capsule and want iPhoto to recognise it rather than import to Mac Mini small Hard drive

As heading states, I have 100Gb of photos and want to have them "sorted" and viewable through iPhoto. at the moment when i add photos it is importing them from the TC to my mini's hard drive duplicating the pictures and using up valuable space. Is there a way of pointing iPhoto to the photo folder on TC as you would music and videos for iTunes library?

Yes there is but you shouldn't.
    Here's why:
    1. Is this a wireless connection? If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
    Problems with a Referenced Library
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Split or separate photo pages?

I'm trying to do something that I would think should be fairly simple and not too unreasonable. I made a photo page, and would like to have it split into sections so I can have a heading above each one, e.g.,
    cool pics
    pic1a pic2a pic3a
    pic4a
    not so cool pics
    pic1b pic2b pic3b
    pic4b pic5b
    etc.
Is this even possible? I can insert text, but it's kind of smushed - I'd like it spread out more. I tried duplicating the 'picture box' thing and got no where with that. The other templates don't seem to be able to do something like this either.

No, you can't do that straight out of iWeb.
You can have more than one photo groups in one Photos page, but iWeb only builds the last group into the photo array.
I have slideshow converter scripts to fix all that if you publish to a folder (non .Mac), you can see demo of the results here - there are two groups in these pages: http://hac.i4host.net/Arts.html and here: http://hac.i4host.net/dotMac/Arts.html
You can get the slideshow converter here: http://hac.i4host.net/iWeb.html
And if you want to do something really weird, see this page - there are four photo groups in it:

  • IPhoto slideshow duplicate undo

I prepared a great iphoto slideshow and wanted to make a copy from which I could delete some photos and change around the order a bit.
So I went to Photo "duplicate", and it duplicated the photos within the slideshow itself. No second slideshow folder appears anywhere.
The message at the bottom now says "1 of 1402 photos" instead of "1 of 701 photos". (I know, that's a lot of photos!)
I tried to "undo" but that's not highlighted. I tried to sort, but that's not highlighted.
The duplicated photos do not actually show in the slideshow, but they are now slightly out of order, and for some reason a few are missing.
What happened, and how do I fix it please.

    LadyBookLover ,
the problem with duplicating your photos is you have duplicated every pictures in your entire library. Hence doubling the size from 701 to 1402. This was not necessary to do. You will have to delete these duplicate, because not needed.
Are you sure you are with iPhoto 4? iP 5 and 6 do have a feature that create separate sub- folders (like albums) and those are separate slide show independent of the iPlibrary.
Anyway, The way to create a different slide show, with iPhoto 4 (which I suspect that you may not be with) is to create another album, (command + N) [or file>new album] and name that new album, and put all photos in there that you want to create your slide show. Only in the albums you are able to move /re-position photos. It is not possible within the Photolibrary.
The differentce with these photos, is that they are not "duplicated" but a mere alias or pointer to the original in the library. If you should try to delete/remove any photo from an album, it will not remove it/them from the library, but just from the album.
If you wanted to delete a picture from the iPlibrary, you would have to select the later (iPlibrary) , and delete the pic. It would end up in the iPhoto trash, and not untill you empty that trash, it would remain in the iPlibrary. Delete the pic from iplibrary (file>empty trash) and the pics in the trash will be gone forever!
    So to recap
1-create an album and put your desired pic in there
2-you cannot delete a photo from the library if you delete from an album. You only remove a pointer/alias.
3-to remove pic for good, select and press delete. the will be trasfered to the ip trash. Then delete the trash and they are gone to infinity and beyond!
    hope this helps!

  • Black and White Photos

My husband recently tried his hand at setting his Canon OES (?) to the black and white picture selection for photos. The photos are okay but kind of flat...not a whole lot of "pop". Is there anything I can do within PSE3 to "fix" this? I've played with the levels and contrast and brightness as well as duplicating the picture and setting the color mode to "multiply". Nothing really grabs my attention. All suggestions greatly appreciated!
    Debbie

This won't help you save the current crop of B&W pictures, but for future reference, the best way to get a B&W out of a digital camera is to shoot in color and then modify it in PSE. In the "Adjust Color" window you can adjust the hue and saturation of individual colors then change back to the Master setting and decrease the saturation to zero. By doing this, you can, for example, goose the greens in a landscape to make them pop a little more before desaturating, and the effect is like using a green filter on a film camera shooting B&W film.

  • When Adobe Muse will add multilingual sites tools?

    Hi everyone!
I´m bulding a website with Adobe Muse and I need it to be multilingual (english, spanish and czech, at least). I know there are some ways to make such a thing using other tools (Business Catalyst, copying the content in the server folder, etc...) but I think it would be more efficient in terms of time and web architecture to have a tool that would let me translate the site without duplicating the pictures and videos, which is redundant and increases the time for the page to load.
    Thank you.
    Fonseca

    Hi Gaurav,
Yes, thank you. However I was more specifically referring to this:
"Sites that use responsive web design, i.e. sites that serve all devices on the same set of URLs, with each URL serving the same HTML to all devices and using just CSS to change how the page is rendered on the device. This is Google’s recommended configuration."
You can find that on this Official Google Webmaster Central Blog.
I would think that Adobe might want to open their ears to Google's recommended configuration. No? Isn't it about time that Adobe starts listening to their customer base (and Google)? We've been tirelessly asking for responsive design for years.
Regarding:  "Adobe Muse works perfectly when it comes to Separate URLs". True ONLY if you can get it to (re)direct correctly. Since they introduced multi device layouts I (and others) have never been able to get the correct version to display on any of my tablets (Archos & Samung Tab 2, 3, 4). The phone site would always show up on the tablet even though the hierarchy for the tablet is: Tablet/Desktop/Phone. Adobe has acknowledged this issue exists and has done nothing to solve it. How again does that help me?

    Message was edited by: Machado

I have seen a few posts on duplicate photos, but have a slightly different situation from the topics that i could find. when i origionally got my computer i transfered all of my photos that i had organized with my own folders into the 'pictures' folder of my account. when i opened iphoto for the first time, it went through some setup hooplah, and then a majority of these photos ended up in my library... no problem. i have continued to add photos on my own, directly into foldes, without using iphoto, over the course of about a year. i did this indirectly, usually putting them in a folder on another computer, and adding the folder with a flash drive (i.e. no wizard for importing). therefore, at this point, i had more photos in my pictures folder than in my iphoto. Not a big deal. Now, a few months ago, i discovered how i can import photos directly into my iphoto library with my camera, without this intermediate method, and i have had no problems with it. and i also have no 'duplicate photos' within iphoto. HOWEVER it is only recently that i noticed a folder (pictures/iphoto library/modified and pictures/iphoto library/origionals) that has the files on my computer again, seperate from my already organized folders. So i have most of my pictures from previous years on my computer twice, because of the option "copy files to iphoto library folder when adding to library" which now, after the damage has been done, is unchecked . Now, the main gist of my question is this... how can i delete the duplicated iphoto pictures in the iphoto library folder (because the origionals are already organized in my pictures) and not delete the photos that i recently imported directly with iphoto. (i realize i can do this picture by picture, but its 3k+ photos, and i dont have that kind of time ). i read about iphotodiet and duplicate annhialator, but these both seem to be dealing with duplicates within iphoto, or deleting the origional and putting the file into the iphoto library: whereas i would like to delete the copies in the iphoto library folder, replace them with links to the origionals, and keep my origionals!!! lengthy, and hopefully solvable perdicament :/
i am open to any help of any kind!
