Am I going to fry my computer?

I am in the process of burning a 1.05 GB file (approximately one-hour program) to DVD. I have ten of these to do and am on number four. The quality is good although the process is very slow. . . .taking about three+ hours.
What concerns me is that the computer is getting so hot. I don't want to fry the poor thing. I am using an iMac 1.8 GHz Power PC G5, OSX 10.4.11
BTW, these programs are perfectly legal to be burning.
Is this a bad thing to be doing to the computer? I'm burning two a day.
Thank you in advance for any help/thoughts about this.

hard to tell from remote..
DVD encoding is a process of high computation.. your Mac is really busy, calculating all the frames..
but, usually, using any app doesn't 'overwhelm' your iMac.. never heard of a 'fried' Mac, just due to using it..
for sure, there's a very small chance of somekind of hardware-failure... your iMac has a fan inside, which should take care of 'venting' the CPU .. some people do notice the low hummmmm from that and at somekind of grid, you should notice some warm air coming out of your Mac.. does your Mac 'breath'? the fan should run while being 'busy' .. or, e.g. people using the the big 'towers' from Apple usually place them on the carpets of the floor.. within months, the inside of the poor Mac looks like a Hoover , which for sure, doesn't allow a good cooling anymore.. or, I've seen someone placing her iMac into the bright sunlight (in front of her window), complaining, the fan is running without running any apps.. for sure, the Mac's case was hot as an oven..
but, if your iMac would get too hot, there're 'mechanisms' inside the machine, which will shut-down the computer, before getting damaged..

  • 2011 Macbook Pro suddenly says no space available on start-up disk (plenty available) and USB drawing too much power (only charging phone). What's going on with my computer? No longer able to charge my iPhone 5.

    Hi, all.
Two days ago I was using my computer, a 2011 Macbook Pro, and suddenly got the error message reading "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using. Closing windows and removing files from your startup disk will also help."
I was only using Google Chrome, nothing was running in the background, and I have 443 of 449.25 GB available (this is after clean-up I conducted after receiving the error message, but probably cleaned up less than 25 GB), so there should be no shortage of space. However, the message kept popping up and I deleted a few files and eventually it went away and hasn't reappeared.
However, last night and then again this morning I have been getting the error message that my USB drive is pulling too much power and has been disable. All that was plugged in was my iPhone 5 on the charger and my computer is also on its charger, so I don't know why this would be an issue, either. I have always charged my phone this way and never had a problem until today.
I haven't been able to charge my phone since. What's going on with my computer?

  • Google said something wierd is going on on my computer...

Today, when I woke up I had Google notice on my gmail account that something wierd is going on on my computer. I had to enter my telephone number, then Google sent me SMS with code so that I could enter my account. Then I had to change my password. In my mailbox I found that someone was sending mails from my e-mail acccount. How is that possible? Did someone break in my iMac? Do I need additional software for Firewall and Antivirus?
Thank you in advance for your answers.
    Kind regards,
    Klemen

    Hello k:
I do not use Gmail.  However, the problem is, I think, on the Google end.  The mail resides on a Google server, not anything to do with Apple.
I seriously doubt if the penetration was to your Mac.
I would definitely not buy A/V software.  There are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - NONE.
You should, if you have not done so, be sure that the built-in OS X firewall is on.
FWIW, I had a similar problem with one of my AOL mail accounts.  The problem was definitely on the AOL side.

I have a 27" iMac mid 2011 2.7 GHz intel core i5 with OS 10.10.1.  For about the last month when I shut down I get a window that says "Continue the installation Choose abort if you wish to cancel the installation  ABORT   YES".   If I don't press anything or if I choose ABORT or Yes the message goes away and the computer shuts down.  But the next time I use the computer and then shut down the message is back.  I have looked to see if there are any downloads pending or if there are any updates trying to download.  I am very puzzled.

My emails are going through on my computer but not on my iPhone 5. Please HELP!

Go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars; select the account in question and check your settings. There are two separate settings for mail, incoming mail server for receiving mail, and SMTP for sending mail.
It could be that the mail process is stuck. Before doing as I said above, double-tap the home button to open the multi-tasking list. Locate the mail app and swipe upwards on the app thumbnail to force closed. Then do a reset on the phone, holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. After the phone reboots, then open the mail app and see if you receive your mail. If you receive an error message, make note of it and come back.

  • I don't know what is going on with my computer

I have no words to explain what is going on with my computer. Its very hard to explain so here is a screenshot of the problem

To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse button. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

  • Outgoing ssh goes to my own computer

I tried out a program called AlmostVPN and it didn't work out for me. I uninstalled it and now whenever I try to make an ssh connection to a remote computer I log in to my own computer. I think the output of ifconfig should show if out going port 22 is being forwarded back to the incoming port 22, but I'm afraid I'm just not geek enough to understand it's output (or how to fix it!):

    Sean,
the output of ifconfig will not tell you if ssh is forwarded back to your own machine.
First thing to do is to disable your firewall (from system preferences). Then check if everything works. It may be a "wrong" rule in your firewall setup.

  • What is going on with my computer?

Earlier in the year, my power adapter melts, severs the wires inside the cord, and I have to buy a new one because I needed info on my computer for school the next day.
Last week, my battery just stops working. The dreaded black X appears and the battery isn't recognized.
So I call Apple, get a new battery, which in turn, starts showing the same symptoms as earlier in the year. The computer is hotter than ****, it only charges erratically and I can already tell that the cord is going to burn up like before.
I haven't even sent the old battery back yet and this battery is also looking like it's trouble. Do I just keep sending batteries back and forth with Apple until I get one that isn't a gigantic piece of crap?
I like Apple, but this is starting to get ridiculous.

I would call Apple and ask if they can't send you a new laptop. Or fix yours.

  • Generating poster images goes so far and computer restarts

I am downloading video from my camcorder; worked for a bit and restarts (i guess it's just too much to download at one time) ... but it was fine; annoying, but fine.
Now it recognizes the camera and gets about half way through the generating poster images (goes really fast up to then) and then just sits there; and usually ends up in the computer restarting. Sometimes it will go away; I am not sure if I have a bad sector on my camera's harddrive or what exactly is going on and why it won't finish with the poster images. Worked fine last night to generate them all.

I posted this question again which was answered on a different thread ... so I am providing the answer here as well ... this worked.
    Hi John (snap),
Just a quick thought that may help. Firstly, I'm assuming that you are importing AVCHD clips. If not, please ignore this advice as it applies only to AVCHD clips.
After connecting the camera to iMovie, rather than importing the clips, click Archive All at the bottom of the Import window that opens. In the Save As field, type a name for the archive. Choose where you want to save the archive, and then click Create.
Tip: Don’t save the archive inside the iMovie Events or iMovie Projects folder. This could make iMovie operate more slowly.
Having archived the clips using iMovie's Archive All feature, try importing them from the archive to an Event in iMovie. To do this, go to iMovie's menu and select File>Import>Camera Archive.
Possibly, iMovie will now import without any hiccups. The problem may be with the camera, rather than iMovie. Copying the camera contents (to an archive), rather than going through the full import process, may help smooth the way.
Another thought: The import problem may also be caused by a corrupt clip on the camera. On the camera, go through all the clips and check for any black (or blank) clips, possibly of short duration. Delete these from the camera. I'm assuming of course that you are not using a tape based camera, such as miniDV tapes. Now try importing to iMovie.

  • T500 goes to a White computer Picture and a Lock After the Lenovo Screen

My T500 got bumped and now when it boots it gets to the Lenovo screen and then goes to a blank screen with a picture of a little computer and a picture of a lock beside it. They are both small and in the upper right corner of the screen. It seems to want a password to get beyond this screen but it doesn't accept the password for the computer or any other option I try. After 3 tries a crude diagram of a white hand comes up and it is locked up. What is this telling me? Is there a word I need to enter to get the machine going again?

They're not expensive nowadays. You should be careful what model to buy though. Can you post here the 7 digit code that specifies your machine type? You can find it on the bottom of the laptop.
(Please post only the 7 digit number, no serial numbers)

  • I am going to share a computer with someone; how do we each set up our own iTunes account on it

please explain how we can each use our own itunes account on the same computer.  Thx

The most practical option is usually to give each user his or her own user account in Mac OS X. Then the iTunes libraries will be completely separate.
