Am I missing something? - Image orientation? - May go back to lightroom :(

Hello - I recently switched from Lightroom over to Aperture - There are things I love about it - and things I don't like ( No Fill Light feature - in aperture I have to adjust several settings to get the same effect ) and the thing that seems to be my biggest gripe is the apparent lack of auto orientation.
The cameras I shoot with ( Nikon D3 and D3s ) used to import into lightroom in the proper orientation - either portrait or landscape. Does Aperture not do this with NEF's ( the raw files produced by Nikon cameras ) - I wouldn't mind manually doing it but I shoot several thousand pictures per session and it's too labor intensive for my staff and I to have to go through and sort something that used to be solved automatically for us.
Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone have a fix?

Haha - if your not carful - very true - I am available light only photographer - in many demanding situations at ISO 6400 - 12800 the D3s is pretty good at getting pretty clean images... but subtle use of fill light and some additional post processing in PS has allowed us to shoot regularly in pretty demanding low light situations without using flash. Even when used properly flash kills it for me - I hate losing ambiance and clamping out all those the great blooms of light and bokeh etc that you lose when you start going strobist. If you get bored and want to see how clean the results we get at ISO 6400-12800 using this method are you can check out our work at ktbweddings[.]com
We use the exposure / shadows /highlights / recovery / radius method right now - but it's 2 more adjustments than the way we were used to in LR. I'm going to stick with aperture because there are so many features that I think make it a better fit than lightroom - it's just little things like that really eat away at your time when you have to do it 400 times on a single project.

  • Problems with image names when exporting - images that have come back into lightroom from photoshop

Can anyone help ? When I need to take an image from lightroom into photoshop then back into lightroom and then I export that image, the original file number disappears and is replaced by dashes. Does anyone know how to solve this ?
    Thanks !

The appearance of dashes usually suggests some kind of pre-set e.g.

The only suggestion I can make is that you check to ensure you are using the correct parameters in the templates manager.

Not only that but the area I painted also becomes over exposed. Do you think I should try to find a cheap mobo to OC my current CPU?  How about trying to find one (mobo) used?  I fear that my only realistic choice will be to scrap the CPU and eventually buy a new mobo and CPU, but as the CPU was only released just under two years ago I would value being over to overclock it with a cheap enough mobo to last me another year or so.
Who knows what additional problems may be run into by switching mainboards & such. The OS would have to be reinstalled fresh, etc. Money wise, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to invest more into a system that is rather outdated. The small performance gain making the switch to another board using the CPU you have, just doesn't really make much sense, especially if what you have now is completing the tasks asked of it. Save up some money, set it aside for a future build. There are plenty of new platforms in the works.

  • Why does CS6 no longer export images out at their boundary/artboard size? Am I missing something?

I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS6, and suddenly clients have been remarking that the file sizes are wrong or there's "a ton of white space around the logo." I checked it out, and sure enough, it appears that whenever I export a file, it does not crop it to the image boundary like it used to, even if I had manually adjusted the artboard to fit closely around it. After a bit of trial and error, I discovered that I have to click "Use Artboards" on the Export dialog each time. The super annoying part is that it doesn't STAY checked, AND it adds a number to the end of the file name. So I often forget to check it (not used to the extra step in workflow), and if I make a modification to the file, I can't just export over the previous version. It requires me to export it, go find it in finder, and manually delete the extra number off the file name. Ugh! The extra steps are adding way too much time when I'm saving out many files. I'm about ready to go back to my previous version just from this alone.
Help! Am I totally missing something? Is there an easier way to do this? It seems like the addition of this feature would only cause extra problems...

I did a quick test of this, and my CS6 Ai does indeed export to the exact size of the artboard, even if there are elements outside this boundary. Imo, this is an improvement over earlier versions: if you had some art hanging over the artboard edge in CS5, the export size would be larger than the artboard, to include even hidden paths. But CS6 is an improvement in this regard. Yes, it would be nice if your choice of "use artboard" was remembered or a choice in the prefs, but this is a small inconvenience, imo. Regarding the addition of -01, etc. to each successive export, why not just send the latest export to your client? You can delete the earlier versions later.
Another plus: if you run in 64-bit, CS5 is slow on opening each file, which is thankfully not so with CS6.

  • Image Orientation/Rotation Problem in Lightroom 3.2 Final

This is a continuation of my previous post regarding this same problem in 3.2RC. It's still happening in the Final version of Lightroom 3.2.
    THE PROBLEM
Image orientation is not working properly in Lightroom 3.2. This affects newly imported images and images that were already in my Lightroom database -  and which have been in the database since Version 1.
Here's a screen capture showing the strange displays I'm seeing in  Lightroom's grid mode:
Notice the odd angle of the image. When I use the Rotate Photo Left tool, the display looks like this sometimes. After a second or so, it will snap to either a vertical or horizontal orientation by itself but rarely gives me the 90-degree rotation this tool should give. The image may flip 90-degrees or 180-degrees, there's no way to tell.
When I view the image in Loupe view or on my second monitor, the orientation shown in Grid view does not match that displayed in Loupe Vew. For this particular image, Grid view currently shows it as correctly orientated as a horizontal while Loupe view shows it rotated 90-degrees to the right. Shouldn't they match?
    BACKGROUND
I never had a problem with image orientation in any preveious version of Lightroom prior to Lightroom 3.2RC and 3.2 Final. So, it seems to be a bug in 3.2. I'm still using the same computer and video card I used with previous versions. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium. Both Windows and Lightroom are 64-bit.
    HELP!
Is anyone else having this problem? How can I solve it?

The size of the catalogue is almost certainly not at play here.
FWIW, I recall seeing something like this once a long time ago on a Mac, possibly with Lr 3 beta, or Lr 2.x.  It went away with a restart. It almost looks like a threading issue, where a thread is suspended or preempted and then is lost or disconnected from the main UI thread.
I recall you can just rotate the image again and it will right itself.
Adobe fist-line support seem to want to use the number of images in the catalogue as some sort of catch-all.  The problem with this is that most of us can demonstrate that there is little correspondence with the number of image IDs in the database and many reported UI artefacts.
I'd keep raising this with them, and suggesting that the size of the catalogue is probably not at play here. As a tactic, you can ask what the maximum size of a catalogue should be, and if it is raw images or the number of changes to the images and virtual copies that is the problem, and if this can be verified by second- or third-line support.

  • I'm disappointed with desktop handling of photos - am I missing something?

    Hi out there,
I'm new to macs -- and I told you so doesn't even come close -- but one thing that's really surprised me is that the desktop and screen saver features seem to be very limited.
The desktop doesn't seem to be able to handle vertical photos at all, and none of the available options for sizing -- centre, tile, size to fit, or stretch to fit are appropriate for a lot of the photos I have in my archive, which are a big range of sizes (both in terms of pixels and orientations).
Am I missing something, or is there another piece of software I need to make this work.
I'm really disappointed that the one thing that should be cool and easy is not working for me, unlike everything else on the computer!
    Thanks for any help.

Nope, you aren't missing anything…you are absolutely correct. This is something that bugs me, too.
Desktop preferences should work like Screen Saver preferences, but it doesn't. If you select a folder of images in Screen Saver, it digs into nested folders. Doing the same thing in Desktop prefs doesn't work because it only looks in the folder itself, not subfolders. Bummer.
And it's also a bummer that there's no "Fit screen" option in Desktop that will properly stretch images (be they portrait or landscape), maintaining the aspect ratio, and not cropping or distorting the photo as it does so.
I haven't found any fix for these shortcomings, and hope that Apple will address them soon.

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

You might copy down the error then try posting again.  Your likely missing a DLL or sorts.  Once people see the error then maybe you can get lucky for the fix.
You might also read thru the posts to see if you WANT anything that 11 may offer.

The other time I have seen it is to open an Indesign CC document with Indesign 2014 which does not have Mindsuite - a plugin I use. Mindsuite, as yet, has not upgrade the plugin for Indesign 2014 therefore it recognises that a the document was created withe a plugin that the 2014 version does not have installed.
I believe your problem will be something like that.

  • I feel like I really missed something somewhere...

So I was watching Family Guy last night using Xine (I like menus), and I noticed that the quality was really bad, so I cranked up the deinterlacing, and once my CPU topped 100%, the quality was "acceptable".
But then I was cooking, so the menus annoyed me (it doesn't have a play all button), so I used mplayer with this command: "for i in `seq 2 9`; do mplayer dvd://${i} -dvd-device /dev/hdc -vo xv; done", and the picture quality was perfect (note the lack of any deinterlace filters).
So I wondered why Xine was giving me such crap quality, and I noticed that "Video Device" was set to "Auto" (which I always thought meant it picked xv over all of the others), but I changed it to "xv", and now I get the same quality as mplayer without any deinterlacing.
Now, I swear a few years ago when I was fiddling with that kinda thing, I had to use deinterlacers with "xv" to get the same quality as I get now (using just xv alone).  So, does xv now use my graphics cards onboard MPEG-2 decoding, or does xv have it's own deinterlacer, or does something else happen?  I really feel like I missed something somewhere...

  • Simple web server setup - missing something

I am trying to use 10.9 OS X Server to set up a simple test web server.  Simple PHP sites to be tested on this standalone server.  Here is what I have done:
    1) Set up the OS X Server DNS services to resolve a test domain name (name.test) to 10.0.1.255
    2) Set up OS X Server Website Services adding the domain name, sending it to a directory on the Mac (listening on any IP address port 80).  Checked enable php but I can not get far enough to worry about that now.
    3) In Network Setting given the Mac a static IP address 10.0.1.225
    4) In Network Settings set the DNS server to 10.0.1.225
Based on my limited knowledge I would think that is it.
But then on that same server when I enter the domain name into safari it just goes out and does a google search on the name.  Clearly the linkage is not being made.
Safari works for surfing, so it appears the basic network settings work.
When I go to 10.0.1.255 I get the Welcome to OS X Server page.
Any help would be appreciated.  Am I missing something simple, or is my basic reasoning flawed about how this should work?

Safari searches the name on google because .test is not an ICANN domain name. To have it not search you have to add http:// (http://name.test).
Don't add .local to hosts, as bonjour handles all .local domain names.
The following should work for you.
    1. Start DNS service and add only one entry pointing to your server, Name it whatever you like but .com, .org, .net , etc... Are more appropriate as they are ICANN domain names. (If your servers ip is 10.0.1.255, it should point to 10.0.1.255)
    2. Enable DNS forwarding to a public DNS server (8.8.8.8 for google's)
    3. In network settings make DNS 127.0.0.1.
    4. Server may add an alert saying the hostname has changed, make sure you update all services. Using scutil to update the hostname is a good idea too
    5. Enable the web service, you should be able to connect to it by typing in your domain name. If it is not a ICANN name you have to have http"// before the domain name. You have to type in the name exactly, do not at www. unless you put www. in the DNS server configuration.
I hope that all makes sense

  • Missing something on stacks? The current pick isn't on top when closed

I'm a learner Aperture user and having fun learning it. Missing something at the moment though. I am working with stacks and promoting one image to the top of the stack, so it shows first in the group of shots. However, when I close the stack, the previous #1 keeps going to the top.
I've tried rating the pick higher than the others, clicking 'Primary Only' and various other things, but the same thing keeps happening: I can't get my new pick to sit on top of the stack when closed.
What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something obvious or have I struck a bug?

Sounds like the image that keeps going back to the top is an Album Pick. You can have different picks for different albums- which can be quite handy at time.
Select your pick then go to the stacks menu and choose "Set Album Pick". See if that works.

  • Setting up rman backups - am I missing something?

I have inherited an oracle 10g database on Windows and I need to set up RMAN backups. I am going through the steps and I think I am still missing something.
I am trying to put the database in archivelog mode and it gives me this error:
ORA-01126: database must be mounted in this instance and not open in any instance
So I try to mount the database (alter database mount;) and it says:
    ORA-01100: database already mounted
So I figure someone else has it open so I shut it down (shutdown immediate), which works fine, but when I try to restart it (startup mount;) it tells me:
    ORA-24324: service handle not initialized
ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
So I try to log into a new session and it tells me:
ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
The only way I can find to restart it is to restart the service OracleServiceDATABASENAME. When it is restarted, it lets me log in, but then I get the same errors as above when I try to mount the database or put it in archivelog mode.
Please let me know what I am missing.
    Thanks!

Over Windows, database service has a vital role in the management of the database. Without it being started, you can't do anything with oracle db. Fro your error,
    >
    ORA-24324:
    service handle not initialized
Cause:     An attempt was made to use an improper service context handle.
Action:     Verify that the service context handle has all the parameters initialized prior to this call.>
It may be possible that you have used an inappropriate service name to start teh database. The other error comes up when the datbase is either just started or is unaware about teh name being requested by teh client to get connected, due to wrong name being chosen or an unknown name being chosen.
All this basically means that you may have either done typos or tried to start some service which was never there. The best way is to set Oracle sid using
set oracle_sid=<your sid>And then do what ever you want to.

  • MX change - missing something obvious

    Good day,
In need of some advice... I'm probably missing something that's staring me right in the face.
6 weeks ago, I changed our MX records. Old MX records (call them ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com) pointed to our soon-to-be-gone sendmail relay. New MX record (call it mx1.example.com) points to a load balancer in front of our 2 brand new (and really awesome !) Ironports C-series.
Now, for all legitimate traffic, and most of our spam, everything is working a-ok.
However, SOME of our mail traffic is still coming in through the old sendmail boxes.
The old MX records' TTL was 1 week. Our current TTL is 1 hour. When possible, I spot-checked the DNS for some of the offending senders, and they return the new MX record for our domains.
Does anyone have ANY insight as to why some domains seem to be ignoring our TTL or using now 6-week-old records ?
    Tearing my hair out,
    Jad

It is not uncommon for spammer to cache or even maintain their own list of SMTP servers. Basically if they find any server that will accept email even without an MX record point to it they will send it spam. I know this may be hard to believe but I have put a mail server on the Internet without and MX record and a month later I get significant spam volumes. We (at IronPort) have heard many customers who continue to get large spam volumes to legacy mail servers even though there is no MX record pointing to them. We have run into this as a common problem "I'm still getting spam, even after I put my IronPorts in place." An investigation show the email did not go through the IronPort, but instead through a legacy system which does not even have an MX record.
As a rule, we ask that Internet facing port 25 access be blocked to all non-IronPort legacy email host.
