Am I OK to turn off my Time Capsule?

I bought my TC principally as a wireless external hard drive but have connected my old wireless router into it and am using the airport feature as well which is fine.
I only use my mac for 30 mins some days and other days not at all, am I ok to turn the TC off when the mac isn't on, it seems like a waste of electricity to leave it on all the time.
Like many others on here it doesn't mount on my desktop now when the mac is turned on but thats another story that I'm trying to fix with the tips on other threads.
Thanks.
Iain.

TC does not automount. You have to mount TC if you wish to access it as a drive, as distinct from using it for Time Machine when it is is mounted by Time Machine and ejected when the back-up is finished. The fact that you mount TC yourself has given rise to some of the problems mentioned in these posts. When TC is mounted on your desktop it seems to give the impression to TC that it is awaiting a back-up. This causes the drive to run and also the fan of which some posters are complaining (Heat and noise). This can only be solved by unmounting the drive.

  • Turn off failing time capsule hard drive

I am using my old time capsule with failing hard drive to extend my new time capsule wifi network.  Can i turn off the failing hard drive in order to stop the error message? There seems to be an ignore option but it is grayed out.

It may not be worth the effort and trouble to open up the Time Capsule to pull the plug that connects to the hard drive, but that will make the error message go away. Some tips here if you decide to do this:

  • Do I have to turn off the time capsule?

I just bough a time capsule, but I don´t know if I have to turn it off when I´m not at home, I mean while I´m not using it. I would like to know if it is a better idea to buy a battery backup.
    I appreciate your help.
    Thanks

The TC can run 24/7 no problems.. but if you are away from home for long periods then there is no issues in turning it off.
    Battery backup ??
Just a 2.5" laptop drive in a holder.. sometimes they can be powered directly from USB if the Mac can provide sufficient current. That is better than other methods when you are on the road.

  • Is LAN access turned OFF for Time Capsule guest network by default?

    Hello!
I just crated a guest network on Time Capsule with OS X 10.9.4 AirPort Utility.
Could someone tell me if LAN network is unaccessible from Guest network?  My shared folders, TC disk and so on. I use DHCP and NAT for Internet connection sharing.
In PC AirPort utility there was a separate box for this - i could easily check that.

The "guest network" operates only on wireless. Clients on the "guest" network only have access to the Internet and other devices.....like a wireless printer....that are also on the "guest" network.
It is not possible to access the "guest" network using the LAN Ethernet ports or any other type of connector.

    Hello KCC4ME,
You may try booting your Mac in Safe Boot, as it can resolve many issues that may prevent a successful login.

If a Safe Boot allows you to successfully log in, you may have issues with one or more login itmes (while the following article is labelled as a Mavericks article, it is viable for earlier versions of the Mac OS, as well).

Can there be any external hard disks - if so How is/are it/they formatted ? Must be Mac OS Extended (hfs) if used for Video.
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most but not for VIDEO.
What this means in Your situation is above me.
    • free space on internal boot hard disk? How much ?
    Video codec
    • streamingDV, AIC etc. (not .avi, .mp4, .m4v, .wmv etc as they are containers not codecs)
    Pictures
    • in what format ? .jpg, .bmp, .tif, else ?
    Audio
    • from where/what format ? iTunes, .avi, .mp3, .aiff, else ?
    The "com.apple.iMovie.plist" file
Many users has not observed that there are TWO libraries.
    • Library - at root level
    • Library - in user/account folder - THIS IS THE ONE to look into

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

You need more free space on your hard drive.

After phone support from apple I ended up creating a new project and adding all 117 clips back in individually till I found out what clips flagged and would not allow me to export. I had 3 I deleted and replaced and everything works now 1hr after tedious work....
Where do Your material come from
    • Camera
    • External hard disk
    • USB-memory
And all are connected so that iMovie can find it ?

  • How to turn off Flex Time

Hi I am just wondering how to turn off flex time as it gets in the way.

There's a little button on the left by the word "Audio Region"
If the EVIL FLEX TIME is on, that little icon next to "Audio Region" will be twisted like a bow-tie indicating that the EVIL FLEX TIME has been activated.
To move audio you have to select the top bar of the clip in this lower audio region (you can see the name of the track or the time code of the track). You can drag-highlight-delete audio from under the "0" line, but not move it. You can also clumsily-and-not-at-all-precisely move audio in the upper tracks (as opposed to the Audio Region window) by dragging them. That won't engage EVIL FLEX TIME at all.
    Hope that helps.
    :S
I know... it all stinks and now it looks like the latest Garageband update messes it all up even more!

I seem to have an issue with setting the allow active content to run files on my computer in internet explorer. Each time I turn it on reboot the computer the setting is turned off.
This computer is on a domain, but there are no domain policies for internet explorer.
Any idea's why this is turning off each time I reboot?
    Thanks

    Hi John,
Based on your description, we can try to set the following registry key to see if it helps:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN
    Value Name:
    iexplore.exe
    Value Type:
    REG_DWORD
    Value Data:
    0

  • Switching off the Time Capsule: risk of damage?

Hello everyone. If I switch off my time capsule (1TB, recently bought) when not in use, for example at night (I think to connect it to a power strip), could I damage it? Or maybe only if the TC hard drive is running?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussions!
This topic has been pretty much beat to death on the forums as there has been and will remain different schools of thought on this.
One school maintains that there is a very good reason that Apple chose not to even put a power switch on the device, and that is that it was designed to run 24/7. Powering off the TC causes it to lose its connection with the local network and internet. When the device is powered back up, these connections must be re-established. Also, when any electronic device is powered up from an off state, the components within the device are subjected to a sudden rush of current. The school thinking on this is that the device will last longer if the unit is left on and subjected to less stress.
The other school says power it down when not in use to save a bit of electricity. They don't buy the theory that a sudden rush of current has any long term effect on the device and claim that the device may actually last longer because the electronic components are subjected to less heat this way over time.
Choose your school, or maybe a middle ground that would have the TC powered off for long weekends, vacations or other extended periods when the device is not needed for backups.

You have to restore whole libraries.. but if you want your whole itunes library you can do that.

Pondini has pages for each application and how to restore its files.. mainly emails, iphoto and itunes of course.

  • How to turn off Quick time plugin in Firefox.

Be peace and happiness upon you!
Under Windows XP Home SP2, I recently updated to Firefox 2.0.0.4 and QuickTime 7 seems to crash Firefox 2.0.0.4 every time a flash is loaded into a page.
So I was wondering if there was a way to turn QuickTime off in Firefox 2.0.0.4.
I have observed that without flash installed, all goes well. But I do need Flash.
I will be using Safari and QuickTime together but for Firefox 2.0.0.4 I don't want QuickTime plugin installed.
In about:config there is a preference known as plugin.scan.Quicktime with value of five. Should I change the value and what to?
    Thanks,
    Fahad.

I'd like to do this too.  That is, I'd like to see the "bars" but not the time since the time is messed up.
But I don't find "System Preferences -> Wi-Fi".  However, I find "System Preferences -> Network" and in that I see a "Show Wi-Fi status in menu bar" that I can click on and off.
However, when I click it off, both the time connected and the "bars" are gone.  I don't see any option to show one and not the other, it seems to be both or neither.
I also found that clicking on the time sometimes (and sometimes not) gives me a menu that seems to let me turn on and off the "time connected" part, but turning it off seems to have no affect.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks.
