Am I over-compressing with DVD Pro??

Hello,
I have a large project I've exported from final cut using compressor with two pass encoding. I drop the project into DVD Pro, create my menu, drop in a blank disc and simply hit the burn icon.
The final product shows artifacts that are not visible in the DVD Pro timeline. A friend suggested that I may be "over-compressing" the file (which may explain the new artifacts) by using compressor and then DVD Pro's "burn" option, which compresses the file again.
Is my friend correct?
If so, is there a setting in DVD Pro that allows me to burn the file that Compressor created without addition compression?
Thanks very much!
Scott

Hi Scott,
DVDSP will encode a video file only if it is not DVD compliant (meaning MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.264). You can set the encoding prefs in the Preferences window.
If you encoded your video with compressor as, I assume, an MPEG-2 file, then it won't re-encode it.
DVDSP's "burn" option simply Builds and Formats your DVD. It has nothing to do with encoding unless you drop a non-compliant file in there, like a Quicktime .mov.
What type of encoding are you doing with Compressor? That will determine how your file looks.
I suspect that the file created from FCP and compressor is not DVD compliant and DVDSP is re-encoding it. This would explain why it looks better in the Simulator. It's using your original file, which hasn't been re-encoded.
Hope this works, Misho

  • FCP Audio is Quiet when exported to iphone or used with DVD Pro

I recorded a voice over with an external mic through a pre-amp into STP, boosted the db level of the recording in STP with the master gain on a channel EQ effect and exported it out as an AIFF file. I imported the AIFF into FCP, put it under video and adjusted the audio levels so the peak db is between -12 and -6 - everything sounds great from the canvas. I then exported the entire video to m4v to be played on an iphone and .mov (through QT not Compressor) to be burned with DVD Pro.
The audio on the DVD works fine in my mac computer and even works fine via blue tooth to my car stereo (using my iphone), but the audio is either quiet or slightly distorted (sometimes sounds like it's underwater) when played in a regular console DVD player or played on my iphone's speakers.
Here is what I have done so far - the STP audio is 48 hz 24 bit and I originally had my FCP sequence settings at 16 bit. I switched this to 24 bit midstream in FCP - is this an issue? Otherwise - I have tried a bunch of stuff, e.g. power line hum is negative in STP and there is very little underlying noise in the original recording based on analyzing with the Noise Reduction in STP.
Has anyone dealt with this issue or aware of a db/audio compatibility problem between STP and FCP or an export problem with FCP in this situation? Please let me know if anyone has any information or solutions. Thank you.

My export out of STP is 6 tracks - including a submix and a master - but I don't even use those (I'm not a seasoned user on STP - I basically exported them by mistake). I end up deleting 4 tracks (the submix and blank master) and keeping the stereo channel that I directly recorded.
However, by way of background, I had this same issue using a Garageband AIF file. It was too quiet and garbled upon export from FCP as well. That is why I switched to STP to use its better EQ/gain boosters. Please advise with any thoughts. Thanks.

  • Third Party DVD Burners with DVD Pro Studio?!

Currently upgraded to 2 ProMacs .. lovely! However have 3 older G4's that are still able to do a good amount of work with videos, are upgraded with RAM, video cards etc...
However I need to change the internal drives as they are now getting on to be 6 years old and are struggling to read disks... let alone create them. Apple are quoting £200 (inc vat) + installation for them (which is silly as its one of the most simple jobs to do!).
I can get Sony's for £50 inclusive, but have been informed that they will not work with Apple, unless all items to be burned are through Toast. This is no good as I use Final Cut Studio.. and I cannot find a way of checking compatibilty of the drive.
Someone has suggested an external, however I dont know how to change the target drive in DVD Pro Studio... and I cant find a compatible list of drives for DVD pro studio...
    Any help appreciated!!
    TP

I use Pioneers (103, 104, 109s) in externals Firewire cases, easier to move bwteeen machines if needed.
Such as these (although U.S. Store)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
You target the external burner in the Build and Format Dialog Boxes.
Also you can build the DVD in Final Cut Pro and burn to disc using Toast (if you want the Sony drive). Toast will often provide better/more reliable results than burning through DVD SP. Alot of people use Toast or burn from a disc image.

  • Starting up with DVD PRO STUDIO, HELP for beginner

Can anybody describe a fast and easy way to create better DVD for DVD player from a FCP projet ? I don't like the poor quality produce from iDVD and I have NEVER use DVD PRO STUDIO. When I burn DVD-R disc in iDVD, most of the time they freeze and don't play properly in friends DVD players. Is there a step by step for begginer ? From FCP to COMPRESSOR, if I have to go thru it, to DVD PRO and to my home DVD player. Nothing fancy, just fast and easy.
    Merci,
    Jean
ps: keep in mind, I have never open COMPRESSOR OR DVD PRO STUDIO.

Best way is to start reading the posts in this forum
Then crack the manual and do the tutorial.
    Then come here with questions.

  • Webcast Archive and Test Questions with DVD Pro Studio

Is there a way to put a web archive of a Mediasite (by Sonic Foundry) webcast into a DVD that can be played on a TV through a traditional DVD player? I know you can link a site to pull up in a web browser when you use the DVD in a computer, but I was wondering if you could embed the archive file they give us on a CD into the DVD menu.
Additionally is there a way that you can make a series of questions for a training test into the DVD menu, so the student can select answers and then see which ones they scored right and which they scored wrong?
    Thank you,
    RAY PEARSON

Ray - the only way you can get this stuff showing on your DVD is to re-create it using video tools like FCP, or convert the footage that you have got to be MPEG2 and then sue it in DVDSP.
The answers you already have here are pointing you this way - you can do lots of things, but some stuff just isn't possible.
For the playback of the CD content, you might consider using a tool like Snapz Pro to record your computer screen (or rather, and area of it) whilst you use the CD and navigate the contents. The output from Snapz can be saved as DV footage with audio, and of course this can then be converted to go onto a DVD.
I think there are ways ahead for you, but it isn't straightforward!

  • Black Magic vs. DVD Pro

At my place of work we have the Black Magic 10 Bit Capture cards. But somtimes when I use the blackmagic compressed mov files with DVD Studio Pro I come across interlacing problems after the DVD is burned and I view it back on an ordinary NTSC monitor. This happens almost every single time. The movie files are jumpy and glitchy during playback. Any thoughts on why this is? Is it because I'm importing the mov file straight into DVD Pro without using Compressor? Or could it be a DVD Pro or buring glitch?
What's the best kind of capture card/ compression that is best used with DVD Pro??
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)   DVD Pro 4

It could be a field order problem. Try switching the field order setting opposite from what its currently set to in Compressor. If Upper first, then try Lower, vice-versa. then encode your clip.

  • 50% grey mask over menu in DVD Studio Pro

    Hi everyone,
I have created a new menu onto an existing DVD project. The new menu has a 50% haze over it, something like a mask. I can temporarily get rid if it if I go to VIEW / DISPLAY STATUS / BACKGROUND but after the next operation it goes back to the mask. I've compared its settings to other menus on the same project and they are the same. I've also taken the project to another computer with DVD Studio Pro and the same issues occurs.
If some could suggest a solution I'd be very grateful.

Drew, if you send them back when they guess wrong without letting them select 4 times they'll be able to figure out the code through process of elimination pretty quick...
A typical method for this is to add one to a register on the correct button press. After the 4th if the register equals 4 goto the secret stuff and if not go to the begining (clear registers) and start again or to another asset saying failed or whatever...
    Not too complex.
    Code: 1, 3, 5, 0
Menu1: All buttons link to Menu2 except button 1 which jumps to a script, adds 1 to a GPRM and then jumps to menu2.
Menu2: All buttons link to Menu3 except button 3 which jumps to a script, adds 1 to a GPRM and then jumps to menu3.
Menu3: All buttons link to Menu4 except button 5 which jumps to a script, adds 1 to a GPRM and then jumps to menu4.
Menu4: All buttons link to a check register value script except button 0 which jumps to a script, adds 1 to a GPRM and then jumps to the check register script,
The check register script just needs to check the register value, send users where they are allowed to go and make sure you clear the register somewhere,

  • Are Compressor files compatible with DVD Studio Pro?

I am buying Final Cut Pro X and Compressor, but I am working on a school project that needs to be finished in DVD Studio Pro. Would the compressed files be compatible with DVD Studio Pro even though FCP7 and FCPX are not compatible?

Yes.  Compressor 4 (or any version) will create the DVD-compliant files that are used in DVDSP.

  • Can I export Quicktime movies with the same quality/compression as DVD

I would like to export iMovie HD 6 projects as quicktime movies of about the same size, compresson level and quality as I get with iDVD. I would like to watch them on my macbook, but don't want the dvd interface. My attempts have tended to produce something close to full quality that requires too much disk space (10 to 12 G per hour) or tiny, overly compressed videos that only an ipod could love. Does anyone know how to set the custom settings to get this?

if your projects are Standard (=not HiDef), the iPhone preset in the export options work good for my standards..
    or..
Export with Quicktime/Options... h264, original res of your project.. ='small' and good looking..

  • Burning a Final cut Pro X Project with DVD Studio Pro

    Hi,
A project edited in Final Cut Pro X and Compressed with Compressor 4, can you then burn to disc with DVD Studio Pro?
I have DVD Studio Pro on my system but when I burn the project to disc using DVD Studio Pro it crashes all the time.
I'm wondering if DVD Studio Pro is not compatable with a 64 bit system?

Thanks Tony that did it, I was using Burn but when I went to Build/Format the disc burned as it should, thanks

  • DVD PRO burning a dvd without a menu after compressing from fcp7

I editing my project using FCP7 then compressed it using best quality DVD 90 min in Compressor and now I am try to burn dvd's using DVD PRO. I am trying to make a dvd with no menu-I just want to be able to hit play and have the dvd play without any graphics on a menu in the beginning. I am trying to import using DVD PRO does not work. I have also tried to export using Compressor-does not work. I keep getting a warning box popping up that says there is trouble in the files or not a compatible file from compressor. I do not understand how that could be since I compressed it using compressor-do not get it. Thanks.

DVDs use an MPEG-2 codec, so regardless of which codec FCP uses to compress the Quicktime file, it will end up as MPEG-2 when you burn to DVD. So as long as the video preview plays in iDVD, you should be fine just using the "Best Quality" setting.
If you are really concerned about the quality, you can also try exporting the video using Compressor and authoring the DVD in DVD Studio Pro. It's a bit more complicated, but the results are worth learning the software.
    Hope this helps.

  • Do you have to use Compressor with DVD Studio Pro?

    Hello,
I'm trying to find a way to streamline bringing QuickTime Movies made in FCP6 into DVDSP.
When I try to import QT Movies or movies compressed with H.264 into DVD Studio Pro, I get the error message: "Incompatible Format".
Is there anyway to get QT Movies into DVDSP successfully without using Compressor?
The least applications I have my students using for this, the better.
It's odd to me because you can go directly from QT Movie into iDVD with no such problems.
    Thanks,

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for the quick response. The rationale of our workflow is to avoid using Compressor to simplify the process for our students making DVDs. But if we are going to have to use Compressor to change the frame rate, as you suggested, then we're just going to have to live with using the application.
We'd consider burning High Def DVDs, but with the format war between BluRay and HDDVD, and a general lack of High Def players and Monitors on the general marketplace, we are going to have to stick with SD DVDs for the time being.
Resultantly, we're going to be stuck with using Compressor in our DVD burning workflow.
    Thanks Everyone For Your Help!

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!

Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS).
