Am I totally hosed?

Yesterday I was running carbon copy cloner to back up my hard drive to my firewire. I keep the firewire drive bootable in case the worst happens.
Apparently it did. The system totally locked up (normal back-up takes less than an hour and after four hours it was still struggling and making no progress) and had to do a hard reboot. When the sytem came back up OS X wouldn't start. Just a black screen and occasion disk I/O error messages.
Restarted again holding down the option key. Booted off the firewire drive and the back-up had finished for my son's account but not my account. I ran the TechTools program that came with AppleCare and updated it to the most current version. Then I checked the internal drive TT showed errors and wanted to repair. I held off repairing and manually moved over the handful of iTunes purchases that hadn't backed-up to the firewire drive. Then logged out and restarted using the OS X install disk to run the hardware diagnostic. It confirmed errors on the internal drive.
I booted again off the firewire drive, pulled some missing photos off the internal drive but iPhoto said four of them were unreadable, moved over my mail mailboxes that hadn't been updated and ran TT again and again it found errors and wanted to do some pretty nasty repairs that would reduce the size of the drive. I went ahead and ran it figuring that if that worked I could try reformatting the internal drive and if it passed verification I could just clone the external drive over and keep on going.
So I gave it permission and nothing seemed to happen. So I went on the net to check for similar problems and suddenly the screen grayed out and in the gray out a dark but transparent box appeared and said I had to power down immediately by using the power button. So I complied.
Now when I try to boot off the external drive it takes a loooong time to get the blue bar to go all the way across to start OS X once it gets there the box doesn't close but the log-in box pops up and does not have any users. I enter my username and password and the lollipop spins then the box shakes. I've tried logging in as other users and still same story.
So I booted off the OS X install disk again and ran disk utility. Shows the external drive is fine but needs to repair permissions. I let it repair a bundle of them. Start again and same long attempt to start OS X, same lack of user information, same failure to recognize users and passwords.
After running the repair with techtools, the system no longer believes the internal drive exists.
Boot again off the install disk and try to reset passwords and it shows no users at all on the external drive.
Obviously the internal drive is hosed. Don't have the error code in front of me but had looked it up and basically the answer was it is dead.
Have I lost my back-up as well? Any ideas why all this going on?

Finally resolved the problem.
The internal drive crashed during the cloning process. Apparently that corrupted the user information files.
I did an archive and install without saving user information to get running again and boot off the external drive.
I'm still dragging stuff up out of the "Previous System" folders but I'm running and will hopefully go get my new internal drive installed this weekend.

  • Have I totally hosed my macbook

    Hey guys,
So I understand the kinds of things that I was doing were risky, and I take complete responsibility for this macbook being hosed.
However, I can't imagine why I should not be able to get this guy working again.
    Here is the story:
    1. 10.4.6 running fine on macbook (intel)
    2. I decide windows might be nice too..
    3. Use bootcamp, install windows, no problem.
    4. Reformat entire system, not it's just osx again
    5. I decide I want to have two OSX partitions, in order to make experiments on one side and just hang out on the other.
    6. While using bootcamp to create another partition, bad things happen. (no detail needs, just keep reading)
    7. Now my goal is to get just one version of OSX to work on the macbook.
    8. I can not get the OSX disc to boot from the cd drive.
    9. Windows installer disc, and Ubuntu installer disc work just fine.
    10. Now I have Ubuntu installed on the macbook. No matter what I do I can not get the OSX disc I have to boot from the Macbook.
    I've tried:
    1. Holding down c at startup
    2. Holding down c at startup
    3. deleting the PRAM by key combo and having the mac chime 4 times
4a. Booting the Mac into external firewire mode (holding down "T" button)
4b. Reformating the entire macbook drive (using all the difrent patition schemes)
    5. Having a really long hard stare at it
    6. Holding down the c at startup
    7. Holding down the c at startup really hard!
    8. I think that's it.
So, I've got a awesome macbook that runs ubuntu really well. But I love osx.
    Help?

does your HD read disk 1 when inserted in your internal drive? Does it spin up then spin down but not read. If this happens try using an external usb drive. Boot up and hold down option key and boot from external drive. My disk 1 cannot be read from my internal drive but boots fine from external usb drive. My internal reads disk 2 fine. Go figure.

  • FF 29 totally hosed the display of Care2, now just one long line, none of the normal UI appears, but does in all other browsers. Why?

The site now appears as one huge list, instead of the graphical interface that still works in all other browsers. I've had to revert to FF 28 where everything works fine. If there's a way to let me know when this is fixed, that would be nice. Else I'm staying with FF28 - even though it is so Chrome-like now, and I really don't like Chrome. I did miss the addon bar on the bottom with my Forecast Fox and other things handy.

  • Totally hosed an upgrade, can I recover?

So... starting with an Arch system that had not been updated in quite a while, I did a pacman -Syu (hey, why not?)  and took a long list of upgrades.  After dealing with the surprisingly minimal conf file skew, I tried to reboot.  But... it seems that I had a h0rk3d HOOKS list in mkinitrd.conf during the upgrade, so the kernel upgrade didn't go so well. In fact, there are no bootable images in my /boot partition.
I can boot off a CD and mount the old partitions, no problem.  I'm thinking there is probably some way to boot off of CD, mount the old / and /boot partitions, and chroot over there to patch things up.... presumably by running mkinitrd again or maybe just forcing pacman to run the kernel upgrade again.  Of course, I need to make sure mkinitrd gets pointed at the kernel on the hard disk and not the CD.  Is this reasonable? And if so, can somebody point me at some instructions?  Otherwise, I'm looking at a full re-install -- luckily I won't lose anything but it sure will be tedious.
    TIA
    -dave

    Recovered!
For those who in the future may attempt a kernel upgrade with a bad /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
    Booted LiveCD.
    Followed http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_Root
setting all the appropriate mounts (I have a bunch of disks on this machine...)
    setting up a chroot'ed environment.
    Repaired /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
    Re-ran the /sbin/mkinitcpio commands copied from /var/log/pacman.log
which happily replaced my /boot/*.img files with sensible things instead of the bit-scribbles left by the upgrade.

  • 1.1.1 update hosed my iPhone

I did the upgrade on Thursday and it totally hosed my iPhone. It looked as though it was updating...but the phone never stopped trying to update after being connected for hours...literally...then i had to disconnect from my computer and got a big, fat warning that i needed to connect to iTunes and do a restore...and no matter how many times i did that, nothing worked. I had to have my IT guy help me today...he needed to do a manual restore...and, of course, i lost everything i had on the phone. Anyone have similar issues? Makes me weary of taking the updates when they pop up. I've only had the iPhone for a month so there wasn't much on there to lose...but nervous about next time.

  • Sharepoint Foundation 2013 User field issue

Guys, I have an issue with Sharepoint Foundation 2013 site that we have created some custom workflows for. We have a couple required fields that we type in a users name and it automatically pulls up a user based on Active directory. once we choose that name
and then save the form. the field immediately becomes blank when i open the workflow item back up. I'm kind of at a loss. I've already totally hosed the server once and was forced to restore.  This seams to have started when we installed share point server
patch KB2881077 but i cannot uninstall or roll back the patch as there is no option to.
    Thoughts?

If you're using SharePoint 2013 April 2013 CU or higher, this is a known issue where the People data is missing in Edit view. There is a separate issue that is resolved in the September 2014 CU:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2995905
    Consider the following scenario:
You create a SharePoint 2013 list that contains a Person or Group (people picker) column.
You create or edit an item, and then you select a person whose name contains a comma in the Person or Group field.
In this scenario, the value of the Person or Group field is lost when you save the item.

  • Please Help! Ready to throw my iPhone out the window!

First time posting on the forums but it's gotten to the point where my phone isn't even usable and I either need some answers or a good excuse to smash it.
    So here's the story:
I got my iPhone 3G (black, 16GB) in September (I think), last year. The phone operated fine with only minor annoyances as software updates came down to fix issues, no big deal. About 10 months in, the phone starts acting up:
If you want clarification on some problem, ask. I don’t want to type out 8 paragraphs if I don’t have to, should be pretty self-explanatory.
    Before OS 3:
1.) Can’t slide to answer calls. After ringing stops phone behaves normally.
2.) Doesn’t charge from wall or computer (happened randomly). Plug phone in, it says it’s charging but never charges.
3.) Can’t end calls / call doesn’t end when other line is hung up (thanks for wasting my minutes).
(these problems persist even with hard resets and full restores, including setting the phone up as a new phone rather than restoring from a backup)
After OS 3 AND full restore:
1.) Can’t slide to answer calls. After ringing stops phone behaves normally.
2.) Can’t end calls / call doesn’t end when other line is hung up (thanks for wasting my minutes).
(same as above, problems persist with hard resets and the like)
At any rate, I was home one weekend and figured I’d take the phone to the Genius bar at the Mayfair Mall Apple Store. Sounded like a good plan until I get to the mall and find the store is being renovated (seriously Apple, you can’t just put that on your site that a store is closed for some reason? Give me a break). Home is 3 hours away for me and the closest Apple store is 2.5 hours away. Awesome.
I deal with the problems for another month or so until my girlfriend and I take a trip to visit her friend in Minnesota. While there we go to the Mall of America so I decide to go to the Apple Store there (which is flappin’ giant, by the way). I explain my problems to the ‘Genius’ as well as informing him of the numerous restores/resets I’ve done both before and after the 3.0 update. He checks the phone for water damage and concludes that the headphone/dock ports are dusty which is causing the charging problem. I proceed to tell him I’ve cleaned them with compressed air before and the problems continued but he’s the ‘Genius’ so I let him do his thing and clean them again. Afterwards, he concludes (via the iPhone diagnostic software they have) that since I haven’t done a restore in about a month that I should do another one as that will likely remedy the problem. Right. Was he even listening when I explained that the problems happened before and after the 3.0 update or that I had on numerous occasions attempted to remedy the problem with hard resets and restores? Nope. My girlfriend over hears this (she is aware of the problems I was having and is a Apple-certified hardware technician at our local Mac store) and comes over to reiterate (albeit slightly more forcefully than I had initially) that the problems occur regardless of restore state or software version. The ‘Genius’ finally decides he can replace the phone after explaining to him that we are not anywhere near an Apple store and that there’s little time left in the warranty. I get my new phone set up and ready to go. Whew.
Everything is great. Phone works, no issues. Until ~2 months ago, new issues start cropping up.
OS 3.1+ (happen on all versions):
1.) Can’t sync, get “unable to complete. Phone was disconnected.” Error. (I checked around the forums and tried a few things but was unable to resolve the issue, including trying to remove the files that it kept ‘disconnecting’ on when it got to, no effect)
2.) Installing an application (be it via App Store on the phone or via sync with my desktop) results in the phone being unable to boot if turned off. When attempting to turn it back on, Apple logo shows then phone goes off after a few seconds. Only way to resolve this is by booting the phone directly to restore mode and doing a full restore.
3.) Earlier this week, my phone wouldn’t boot after having no apps (0, zero, zip, nada) on it after restoring it a few weeks back. Apple logo showed up then the spinning loading animation overlaid on the logo only to freeze. Attempted booting again and it came on (whew).
4.) Today, my phone wouldn’t boot at all, again, no apps are on or have been on the phone since I last restored it. Tried turning it off/on a few times, no good. I ended up restoring the phone again.
At first, my girlfriend was convinced that it was because I was synching with my desktop PC (obviously, blame it on the PC first), which I’ve been using since I got the phone and everything was fine until both phones randomly decided to crap out. I ended up restoring it on my MacBook Pro as a new phone just to see but the same thing happens with the apps causing it to not boot. After that we thought that it might be a single (or a few) apps that were just taking the phone down for some reason. I restored the phone with no apps and it seemed to be ok so I put 3 apps that I’ve had pretty much since they were available (and used to work without issue) back on to see. The plan was to add a few apps until the phone stopped working properly to narrow down the offending app. Just kidding! Just having those 3 apps (Beejive IM, Facebook, iDracula) causes the phone to not boot. I restore and try just Facebook. Same thing, phone doesn’t boot. Restore, try just Beejive. Same thing, phone won’t boot. By the way, the phone doesn’t boot even without me having LAUNCHED THE APPS AT ALL. Just by being on my phone it’s totally hosed.
At this point I have no idea what to do. I want to like my iPhone again but it’s terribly worthless when I have to restore it every other day and can’t use my ~$90 worth of apps (PS: even Apple’s own ‘Remote’ app brings the phone down). I really, really hate to say it but my old HTC Hermes (Windows Mobile 5/6) PDA phone was better than this (and WinMo is god-awful).
Does anyone have any suggestions? My phone is out of warranty now and I don’t have money to buy another phone even if I wanted to.
Also, I treat my phone like a baby. It hasn't been dropped a single time, been near water, or operated outside of the safe operating temp guidlines.
I'm willing to elaborate on any of the information I provided above, just let me know.

After the restore did the phone work properly for a while? Say, a day or so?
If so it is possible you have an app that doesn't let go of memory properly. I reboot my iPhone ( hold sleep/wake and hole till you see the apple logo) every few days. This resets the memory. The iPhone OS has doesn't seem to mange memory very well yet. So a reboot will help with that. I have had my phone almost slow to a stop before I started rebooting. Always reboot after installing a new app. Also do you close all pages in Safari when you are done? This is a good practice. Safari will run in the background and use processor time and drain your battery quicker. Create a new blank page then close all others when you are done browsing for a while. I have also found that certain web site that have animated images like weather maps will turn the phone into molasses. As soon as i close that page it gets faster.
If all of the above have no effect then as Tamara said it is time for a trip to the Genius bar.
    Good luck

  • .Mac Address Book/Contacts Design

Perhaps I am just not finding what I am looking for a would be happy if some one might clarify my frustration with Apple's design of the .Mac contacts features for the Address Book. As a writer/journalist, I am a person with a fairly sizable Address Book and use it while I travel on my Powerbook and even on computers in coffee shops and desktop computers in places I visit. Thus, I have contacts with email, phone, web site and NOTES. The notes I keep about my contacts are vital. When did I last speak to them, what is their latest project or endeavour, who are the spouse and children, driving instructions on how to get to where I am going to meet them. Even appointment times. Why can't Apple seem to integrate these functions with iCal and even Google maps or Mapquest to make is .Mac contract fully functional?
And where are my NOTES in .Mac? It is weird because when I am syncing (another function Apple has not implemented well and has changed the place for and it has totally hosed the sync with my Motorola cell phone as well as my wives) the NOTES appear during the review when merging data BUT I can't view my notes in any location on the .Mac?
The notes also fail to find their way to the iPod. Additionally, I have photos of many of the people in my contacts, I see the holders for them in the iPod contacts, on the .Mac but they don't get updated and transferred and on a number of occassions when I sync, they get whiped out on the host computer. The loss of data is a big issue with the syncing and one that Apple seriously needs to solve.
Why doesn't Apple make exporting the content of the Address Book with note to a tab delimited file easier? Why doesn't Apple give us the ability to use contact information in Pages or other Apple applications for mail merge or letters, into a database, or Excel spreadsheet? A persone ends up inveesting a lot of time and effort into Address Book because it is connected to mail and then you get your data stuck and Apple gives few effective ways out. Is it possible these things can be fixed?

  • IOS 8 RAW Support - Photos Resized

Can anyone else confirm this possible bug?
Importing JPG+RAW files using the Camera Connector on iOS 8 resizes the RAW files to the exact same file size as the JPG.
This ends up being about a 50% reduction in RAW file size.
At this point I have no idea how the photos are affected - they look similar in the Photos App, however when transferred to a network drive they are clearly reduced in size.
    Anyone else seeing this?

Can't seem to delete or edit my previous response, so just disregard it. After further investigation, the following is more accurate.
I am experiencing exactly the same thing, which leads me to suspect you are also exporting files to Dropbox using PhotosInfoPro. iOS 8 has broken this app, and several others, where RAW+jpg bundles are concerned. When exported, the RAW+jpg bundle winds up the same size as the jpg alone because IT IS the jpg alone (albeit with a different file extension). The RAW sensor data just ain't there. So all those "RAW" files you have been backing up to Dropbox since the advent of iOS 8 aren't RAW files at all. They're just jpegs in disguise. I just figured this out today (via experiments too lengthy to detail here) and I'm ready to throttle someone. Many of my RAW images, which I deleted from the camera cards and from my iPad because I thought they were safely stored in Dropbox, are now simply gone.
The good news - if there is any good news at all in this mess - is that the RAW data is actually still there in the RAW+jpg files you still have in the Photo app on your iPad. iOS broke both PhotosInfoPro and Photogene, but PhotoRaw is still able to read and decode the RAW data. So it's definitely there. But trying to transfer it to cloud backup buggers it. I've tried several methods with both Dropbox and Google Drive. Export a RAW+jpg pair to the cloud and import it back to the iPad, and PhotoRaw can't deal with it. It doesn't even recognize it as either a RAW file or a jpg.
Bottom line? It's totally hosed up. Just another thing that was working fine that iOS 8 has now broken.

  • How do I find and install a previous version of iTunes?  I had a terrible experience with installing Yosemite, which I de-installed by reverting to a Time Machine backup prior to installation.  iTunes did not revert.

After totally hosing up my mid-2011 MacBook Pro with a Yosemite installation, I retrieved Mavericks from Time Machine.  It worked fine, except iTunes stayed the current (Yosemite) version.  I ran the 8.1.2 update on my iPhone 5c this morning, and it refused to restore at the end of the process.  Fortunately I own a Not Updated Mac Air and an iPhone 4s, so (with a very helpful ATT tech support person) was able to get the 5c back.  Any ideas?

Sometimes this works - try putting the new iTunes if a folder and see if you can install it. You might have to re-index Spotlight.

I have recently installed Mavericks on my desk top and since then I have been unable to switch off my computer without crashing it. I work with two screen and now I seem to have the menu bar on the second screen as well which I did not have before.  Can you please help me?

Dr Bettina, I had similar problems with Mavericks. I installed it on a Mini and a 13" MacBook Pro. I can't speak to your disdplay issues, but I can confirm the inability to logout, shut down, or restarft without a forced, power button shut down. I can also report frequent System Prefs freezes and finder issues, like folder contents taking half a minuite or more to render, or not appearing at all. And while a few Adobe CC apps actually ran faster, InDesign ran like molasses uphill in Decemner.
I tried uninstalling or disabling numerous 3rd party apps and pref panes. I unplugged everything but the keyboard, ran DiskWarrier, repaired permissions, did fsck -f, trashed various preference files, reinstalled the OS... You name it, and I tried it — short of a potion using eye of newt.
After two days of totally hosed productivity, I restored OS 10.8.5 on the Mini so I could actually get some work done. However, I've decided to leave Mavericks on the MBP as a sort of crash dummy, and will install and thoroughly test all updates until stability has been achieved. Then — and only then — will I upgrade the Mini to Mavericks, even if it means waiting 'til a .2 or even .3 update.
    Good luck to you...

  • How can I downgrade to a previous version?

How can I downgrade to a previous version. I upgraded to 2.3 and now my site is totally hosed because the fonts on the master page are changing size arbitrarily without me touching them. I've had to eliminate my site map on the bottom of my master page because I've spent over 20 hours trying to correct the issue and can't seem to get anywhere. Even completely recreating the page doesn't correct the problem.
I was going to simply change a few photos from an older backup copy of the html files, but when I opened them with the 2.3 version, it changed all of the font sized on those files too.
I need my site working properly, so, how can I downgrade to the previous version and get my site working again until the bug is fixed?

  • Warning: Don't install Windows 7 64-bit on Older MacBook Pros

I totally hosed my machine by installing Windows 7 64 bit on a MacBook Pro that Apple has not deemed to be okay with running Snow Leopard in 64-bit. I have a Core 2 Due, which is fully 64-bit. Windows 7 64-bit runs perfectly on a MacBook Pro, but Apple's Snow Leopard can only handle 32-bits. Crazy.
I'm guessing Windows 7 updated the MacBook Pro's EFI to 64 bit, which since my Firmware hasn't been updated, can't recognize or load. Some I'm stuck.
Does anyone know how to return a 64 bit efi back to its original 32 bit version? I've been forced to reinstall Snow Leopard, hopefully the Disk Image I created will be able to bring back my data, otherwise I'm screwed and really ******.

I don't think Windows 7 would normally modify your Guid Partition Table, but Boot Camp
(particularly the later versions) is rapidly gaining a nasty reputation for hosing partition maps.
    Test Disk might could help:
    http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
You will need to boot it in firewire mode (if supported) or from an external clone.
I hope your disk image is good. Rule of thumb for OS Disk Images:
    Make them sparseimage or sparsebundle, do not compress, and last but not least;
Make 2 of them. Just some friendly advice.
I have yet to see anyone repair a defective, compressed, UDIF disk image. I have
successfully repaired sparse UDSP/UDSB images using either disk utility and/or Disk Warrior
and/or iPartition or some combination of the three.
I'm not against disk images, to the contrary, I use them almost exclusively for backup lately.
I mount them, then place a clone or data on them using Carbon Copy Cloner or Chronosync.
Of course I only use UDSP/UDSB uncompressed images.

  • Macbook Pro won't start up - Mountain Lion won't install

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro from august 2012, today it just crashed. I tried to fix it with disk utility, but it told me that I need to reinstall Mountain Lion, because disk can't be fixed. I then tried to reinstall Mountain Lion but at first it didn't let me select the Macinosh HD, (I also have windows on it, that partition couldn't be selected either), then I restarted and when I tried reinstallation again, it didn't even showed me The Machitosh HD partition anymore. I tried NVRAM and safe boot too, without success. Can anyone help? Thanks,

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
You installed Leopard on battery power? That's a real big no no. A very risky gamble at best.
If your battery died during install, you may well have totally hosed the system.
After recharging i turned on mac and wont boot up past the apple with dots hovering it. Don't know much about macs so if you could help it would be appreciated.
See if you can boot into the Leopard DVD (hold down "C" on boot) and after the language screen, on the top left will be a menu. Select Utilities, run Disk Utility and repair your HD and permissions.
See if that gets you somewhere.
