Am i using my laptop right?

I've never had a laptop and don't really know how to use it properly, this is my main computer i use for everything web based/word processing, itunes movies/tv shows etc. almost everything apart from live tv i use my Macbook Pro for.
Recently i've been noticing that the battery life isn't lasting as long as the prescribed 8 hours by Apple and i've been thinking maybe my battery is screwed or something but the condition is "normal" in the options menu so i think it's just maybe me under/over charging it....what i always tend to do considering i use it 100% of the time at my desk is charge it fully up and then use it until the battery is running on red 10% or so and charge it up again...and basically i do this over and over rinse and repeat....is this what i should be doing?
For example, at the moment i started using my laptop at 10:30PM (GMT) and it's now 12:37 (GMT) and the battery life is at 28%, surely that can't be right?
Lastly, even though i've had my laptop less than a year (i got it in August 2009) it's showing a charge cycle count of 82, is this normal aswell?
I understand these may seem like remedial questions to ask, but i don't want to hurt the longevity of my laptop as i plan to have it many years, so i would really appreciate any help and assistance from those of you that have more technical knowledge on this kind of subject than myself.
Thanks again,
B.

THere are various reasons why you may not be getting long charge life out of your battery, Blakey. A "bad" battery is just one of them. In your particular model a more likely cause after this period of time and level of usage is that you are doing things with the computer which involve a heavy load on the CPU, or are using bus powered peripherals that draw a lot of power, but a bad battery is always possible.
but the condition is "normal" in the options menu so i think it's just maybe me under/over charging it....what i always tend to do considering i use it 100% of the time at my desk is charge it fully up and then use it until the battery is running on red 10% or so and charge it up again...and basically i do this over and over rinse and repeat....is this what i should be doing?
No. That was a good approach back in the days of NiCad batteries, but it is NOT a good approach with Lithium based batteries like the one in your MBP. These batteries last longest if you use them gently, but regularly - ideally running a bit on battery every day or two, but avoiding regular deep discharges. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1764220 and http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html for good advice on this. You also need to "re-calibrate" them every month or two. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490 for instructions on how to do this).
For example, at the moment i started using my laptop at 10:30PM (GMT) and it's now 12:37 (GMT) and the battery life is at 28%, surely that can't be right?
It depends on what you have been using your computer for. The "up to 8 hour" figure is based on tasks that involve "light" usage, and that doesn't put a lot of stress on the CPU or involve other "power hungry" processes. If you are doing things that make extensive use of the computer's processing power, have "bus powered" peripherals attached, have the screen brightness turned right up or are running things like the built in iSight camera, Blue Tooth or the DVD drive, then the charge life can be much less.
One common cause of short battery charge life these days is precipitated by the very widespread use of "Flash" in websites. The 'Flash" plug-in that runs things like most "YouTube" videos, and most of the animated adverts that appear on web sites, is a very heavy power consumer, and also pushes up the power consumption of web browser themselves, too. Interestingly YouTube have recognised the problem with respect to their own content, and are now running a "beat" program which in many cases replaces "Flash" versions of the videos on their site with "H.264" ones. You can read about this HERE and join it </a<a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.youtube.com/html5>HERE
Another thing you can do to deal with this problem is install the excellent free (donationware) Safari plug-in "ClickToFlash" - see http://clicktoflash.com/ This gives you the choice of opening any particular "Flash" items on a web page that you visit. It can dramatically improve battery charge life if you are a heavy web user. Helps you to avoid being bombarded with all of those animated Flash based adverts that seem to creep into just about every web page, too!
Unless you use 'ClickToFlash" you should avoid having many tabs or windows open in your web browser at any one time when running on battery, as they generally continue to use power even when in the background if they have any "Flash" components
Sometimes, though, you may not even be aware that processes are running in the background that are using a lot of processing power. On occasion this is due to faulty coding of a program, or things like system related database corruption resulting in a "Runaway" process.
A good way to check for such things is to follow the steps at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473
Of course, leaving a lot of applications running at the same time, can also result in substantial reduction in charge life, as power will be being used to maintain their content in RAM memory, even if they are in the "background" and not being actively used.
Things like "bus powered" hard drives, USB TV tuners, and the like can also consume a lot of power. Anything which doesn't have its own power supply that you have attached to your computers own USB or Firewire ports will be drawing power.
Always turn off Bluetooth when you aren't actually using it, too. My own experience with bluetooth when using battery power is that it can knock up to an hour off the charge life off of my MBP13".
Lastly, even though i've had my laptop less than a year (i got it in August 2009) it's showing a charge cycle count of 82, is this normal aswell?
Yes, that is a perfectly normal figure, Blakey. A complete cycle or two or even three every week is just about ideal with these batteries, in fact, though this should preferably be occurring as a result of regular light use on battery, rather than the "Full charge and then run it right down" approach you say you have been using.
If you want to get a better idea of your battery's actual condition use system profiler (head to the Apple menu, hold down the "option / alt" key and select "System profiler" at the top of the menu).
Under the "Hardware" section, select "Power", and under the "Charge Information" section take a look at "Full charge capacity (mAh)". The original "Full charge capacity" of your battery on your 15" model will have been about 6665 mAh. The further it has fallen below this figure the more your battery has deteriorated. With the batteries in the "mid 2009" unibody MBPs with your cycle count you would still expect the current 'full charge capacity" to be above 95% of the original capacity. (to give you some form of comparison, my own MBP13", also purchased in August last year has 147 cycles chalked up, and is currently still at a little over 98% of its original "full charge capacity". This is typical of a healthy battery in one of the uni-body models with non-removeable battery.
If you want more advice about this copy the figures for "Charge Information" and 'Health Information" from System Profiler and post them here so we can check them out.
Cheers
Rod
(PS, even though my cycle count is more than double that of "ScorchinScooter"'s, over much the same period of time, you will find, if you do the sums, that my battery is, in fact, just a little "healthier" than his when it comes to % of original "full charge capacity" (though the difference is tiny) . I agree with him when he says that it is a good idea to use the computer on battery for an hour or so each day, but be wary of leaving it on the charger all the time. Keeping down the cycle count is important up to a point, but take don't this too far. Anywhere in the 1 to 3 cycle count each week is about right, depending on how much you use your computer, etc. It is HOW the cycles are achieved, rather than their absolute number, that really matters more with these batteries.)

  • I tried to sync some new songs bought from iTunes into my ipod using my laptop, (for the first time).  It would not add the new songs to the ipod.  I tried several times, with same result.  I never had this problem using my desk top computer.

I also am having a problem with the songs I purchased using the laptop not showing on the desk top itunes, even though it is authorized to do so.  The new songs did show up on the iPad iTunes, however.  Have no idea why.  I thought this happened automatically.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.

  • Wireless internet not working at my house when I use my laptop (using a linksys wrt54g2 router)

I am using a laptop for wireless internet (Dell D610). I have no problem using wireless internet at my school and in other places, but at my house, I can’t browse the internet. The router at my house has a strong signal (4 or 5 bars) and when I try to connect to it, it says that I am connected, but when I open up the internet browser, I can’t get online. The router is in a room right next to mine and it is on the same floor. It is a Linksys WRT54G2 router.
When I go to the network connections folder, for the wireless network connection icon, it says “not connected, firewalled.” I can still browse the internet, though (at places other than my house).
Another thing that I want to mention- I can't connect to other routers in the neighborhood either (the ones that aren't secured). It just doesn't connect (but for the router in my house, it connects). But my roommate told me that a bunch of people have connected to this one guy's router.
What is the problem here? What can I do to make the internet work? Why would I be able to access the school's wireless internet and not the one in my house?

Whats the Wireless Settings you have set on your Router, I there might be the possibility that you have set the security mode on your Router too high thats the reason you are not getting connected to your Wireless Network. Follow the setps to change the Wireless settings on your Router and i think this might help in getting you connected to your wireless network.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Click on the Sub tab, Wireless MAC Filter..
Make sure the Wireless MAC Filter on your Router is Turned Off.
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

While you're in itunes, with the leftside window open, click on Apps. Then, look across the top middle of your itunes screen. You will see several choices: All, Iphone/iPad Touch, Ipad, Ipod Games, List, and Updates.
Clicking on each of these gives you a different view.
When you select ALL you will see all of your apps. When you select Updates you sill see only the apps that need to be updated. When you are in Updates you will see the Update button in the lower right corner.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ipod classic 160 using 30GB laptop

Is there a way to import my extensive cd collection (at least 160GB worth) to my ipod classic 160 using a laptop that has only 30GB? Can I somehow use my 1TB external drive to help get all the music onto my ipod? So far everything I import to itunes goes directly on my laptop which has been quickly overloaded. Can anyone give me an idea of what to do here. This was so easy using non apple mp3. There must be a way!

First, there is no need to convert mp3 files to AAC, iTunes and iPod support mp3 just fine. So, you can rip your CDs in iTunes in the mp3 or AAC format, or any of the formats supported by iTunes.
Second, it sounds like you’re interested in moving your library off of your laptop and onto your external drive, no problem! That makes it easier to help if that is your ultimate goal. But just to make it clear, there are a few considerations you need to be aware of:
a- iTunes has a “Consolidate Library” utility that lets you port all your music files to a new location. Doing this leaves the original music files in place and creates copies in the new location. So, you need to decide if you want to keep the originals or delete them once they are all copied to the external drive. You can make that choice later.
b- When you consolidate your library to your external drive, iTunes will have to manage the organization of the files and folders. So, if you’re using your own way of filing your mp3 files and not letting iTunes manage it, then consolidating your library will copy all your files into the iTunes organization on the external drive (but your original files will remain where they were).
c- Having an iTunes library on an external drive works just fine but there can be a few quirks. If you have a PC, sometimes Windows decides to change the drive letter of your external drive for no apparent reason. Also, if you start iTunes and it can’t find the external drive (disconnected, power off, new drive letter, etc.) then iTunes will open with a default library, which it expects to be on the C:\...\My Music\iTunes location. If you don’t have a library file in that location, then iTunes will create one and open up with a blank library. However, both of these risks can be handled easily and are recoverable.
d- You can have multiple iTunes libraries, such as the one on your external drive and perhaps the original library on your laptop. However, all libraries are independent so when you change one there is no change to the others. If you manage multiple libraries, you need to decide up front which will be your primary library. Since you have a capacity limitation on your laptop, your primary would be the external drive. The reason to decide this is so that (1) if you auto-sync your iPod, you want it to reflect what’s in the primary library, which may be different from the one on your laptop, and (2) when you add new music, make tag changes, make new playlists, etc., you make sure you’re doing that to your primary library so that the changes get put onto your iPod. So, if you decide to keep the original library on your laptop as an auxiliary library, then you should not auto-sync your iPod with that library open since over time it will differ from your primary library on your external drive. Also, when adding new music, do that with your primary library open, not the one kept on your laptop. With some experience, you can learn how to add new music to your external drive, then also add it to your laptop, but I won’t get into that now.
So, if you’re ready to go through with this, follow these steps:
1- Make a backup copy of your "iTunes Library.itl" file. By default, this is located in your C:\...\My Music\iTunes. Keep a copy of this file in a safe place just in case something goes wrong with the consolidation (see step 9 for recovery). You should make a habit of backing this file up anyway since it contains all your playlists, song ratings, and play history.
2- Create a folder on your external drive where you’re going to put your music files. If you have some music already on the external, I don’t recommend putting your new library there, create a separate folder (e.g. E:\iTunes Music). If you already have some music on the external drive that you want in iTunes, you will add those at the end of this process.
3- Start iTunes and go to your iTunes preferences (Edit/Preferences, then click on the Advanced tab). Next to the “iTunes Music folder location” window, click on the “Change” button and navigate to the folder you created in step 2. iTunes will put up a message indicating something like “updating library” but that doesn’t actually move your library.
4- While still looking at your iTunes preferences, make sure these two options are selected: "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library". Close the preferences dialog.
5- Select the iTunes command Advanced/Consolidate Library. iTunes will warn you that this is a big change, so let it rip if you're ready. iTunes will copy all your laptop’s library to the new location on your external drive. This may take awhile if you have a large library.
6- When the consolidation is complete, right-click on any song and select Get Info. Check to see that iTunes has the native file stored in the new location on the external drive.
7- This step is optional, but I recommend doing it to help prevent problems with drive letter changes, and it makes your iTunes library completely portable to other Windows PCs running the same version of iTunes as your laptop. Close iTunes and go to the C:\...\My Music\iTunes folder. Move (don’t copy) the "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" files to your external drive. You can put them anywhere but I recommend a folder that is easy to see and understand (e.g. E:\iTunes Library Files). Now, hold the Shift key while you start iTunes – keep holding the Shift key until you are prompted to “Choose Library” or “Create Library”. Select “Choose Library” and navigate to you put the "iTunes Library.itl" file on the external drive. iTunes will start up as usual. Note that holding the Shift key while you start iTunes is how you toggle between libraries, and how you can create a new (blank) library. Also, iTunes remembers the location of the last library it opened, so you don’t need to use the Shift key to re-open the library you last used.
8- If you had music on the external drive that you want to add to iTunes (now that you have extra capacity on the external drive), then simply drag and drop these files directly into your iTunes library. iTunes will make copies of these songs and organize them in the new folder structure you’ve set up – you can delete the original copies of these songs once you confirm that they’re new location in iTunes is set.
9- If any of the above steps got messed up, or you’re not happy with the results, then simply restore the copy of the "iTunes Library.itl" file you backed up in step 1 (put it back in the same location), then hold the Shift key while you start iTunes and navigate to the original "iTunes Library.itl" file location on your C: drive.
10- If all is well and you don’t want the original files on your laptop, then delete away. If you decide to keep the original files as an alternate library, then do the same as in step 9 to restore the original library. You can then toggle between libraries by holding the Shift key while starting iTunes and selecting the appropriate "iTunes Library.itl" file. Note that to change from one library to another, you need to close iTunes and restart it with the Shift key being held – you cannot change from one library to another with iTunes open. Also, sometimes it helps to put something in each library so that you can easily tell which one you have open. Maybe create a folder in the iTunes source column called "Primary" or "Secondary" so you can tell when you open one library vs. the other.
11- If you launch iTunes expecting it to open the library on your external drive and it comes up with an empty library, or the original library, that may mean that your external drive is not being recognized by your laptop. Check to make sure it is active, then re-start iTunes with the Shift key and select the "iTunes Library.itl" file on the external drive to return to your primary library.
12- If you have other PCs with the same version of iTunes, you can connect your external drive to them and use the Shift key as you launch iTunes to select your library. This makes your library portable to other computers – cool huh?

I set up my iphone with my laptop but now its broken is there anyway of adding new song using anpther laptop/desktop computer without erasing everything currently on my phone? I have no access to my old computer and the songs on it are from cds not itunes purchases
    Please help!!

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.

I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)

  • I cannot get my iMac to connect to my macbook via Thunderbolt to use my laptop as an extended desktop

I am trying to connect my iMac 21.5" desktop to my macbook pro via Thunderbolt cable so that I can use my laptop as an extended desktop. I have tried using detect displays to get it to show up and nothing happens. I've tried doing command + F2 to make it a targeted display, but the only thing I can get to happen is my iMac will mirror my Macbook and that's not what I want. No matter what I have tried it hasn't worked. I have tried turning both computers off and I have a brand new thunderbolt cable. I've updated all the software. Is there anything else I'm missing??
    I'm running OSX Yosemite 10.10.1
    Thank you !

We've already done all of that. And we used the same thunderbolt cable to connect two iMac's and that worked totally fine doing the Command+ F2. I don't understand why we can't get the macbook to do the same.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!

I have a new iPod Touch and one apple ID. I want to use My laptop aswell as my desktop computer for the one ipod, using the same apple ID. I have music on both computers and want to merge the two without losing any music or apps. How do I do this?
My iPod has music and apps from my apple ID that I downloaded to my iPod via iCloud and some apps that I got free from the store, straight onto my iPod, but my laptop has some music on it aswell, separate from my other library. I want to put the music from my laptop into my iTunes library which I want to use on both computers. Is it possible to do this?
    Thanks.

    - You can only sync an iPod to one iTunes library/computer. You can however, manually manage music and videos among different libraries.
Go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device>Set up Syncing>Sync your device manually and follow the instructions.
    - If y wnat to switch syncing libraries/computer see:
go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device>Set up Syncing>Sync your device manually and follow the instructions.
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
If all the synced media like music is in the iTunes library of the second computer it is very easy.

  • Can i use pc laptop monitor for mac mini?

I am going to be out of the country for a year - maybe in Africa, most likely in area not well served by technology.  I have to use PC for work so have a think pad.  I also have an ipad and a mac mini.  I really want to take my mac mini (mm) - it bridges a gap between these two.  It's small enough and I can use my bluetooth keyboard for both ipad and mm.  I can only take a suitcase plus backpack...so I am really not gonna haul a monitor.  Is there a way to use PC laptop as display for mm?  Weird, I know but I can only take so much...
thanks for any help you can give.  cheers

do you think one of these new USB powered mobile monitors (LED/LCD) might work - toshiba and lenovo both have them.  they say they are compatible with any windows computer - but why not mac?
