Am totally confused by networking - please help

One area that I feel I really lack anything but the most basic knowledge of is networking. Any help is greatfully received. I've done reading around it but i'm still stumped on some basic points.
Okay in system preferences>sharing it says "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: Macintosh.local" - fine. It also says "Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at afp://Macintosh.lan/ or "Myname Surname’s Computer". What is the difference between these three?? Presumably I would be able to use IP to connect to make this 4 - are these different protocol or do they allow different levels of access?
Secondly, and possibly relatedly, i connect to my laptop (g4 i book 10.3.9) using apple K in the finder by typing laptop.local & following from there. no probs. However if click the laptop icon in the sidebar of the finder and click on the icon I get a "connecting before it times out. I've noticed the sidebar also being less stable on other networks- is this annecdotal or usual?

Yes they are different protocols.
Your Mac and other Macs will try to find other Macs on the LAN using Bonjour.
This tends to be the MyName Surname Computer's name way.
If you turn On Windows File Sharing in System Preferences > Sharing you will also see Windows machines by there Computer name in the side panel of the Finder.
IF you go to the Finder Menu bar Go menu and Go to Server you can Browse or use various Protocols to contact other computers on your LAN.
AFP (Apple File Protocol) is Off be default it most newer Macs but is a way to start the line.
Starting the line smb:// will get you the Shared Folder on Windows Machines and other Macs with Windows File Sharing turned On.
Doing it with the Users Name bit will tend to get the Shared Folder and access to any Web pages you have in your Sites Folder.
Using the computer's Hard Drive name will tend to be able to access Web sites held in that part (Hard Drive/Library/Webpages)
I would tend to agree that Bonjour discovery did seem simpler and smoother in 10.3.x than later OSes.
I am sure someone will give you a more detailed response soon but this should get you going.

Airport Extreme setup problems on existing WDS network - Please help!

I just bought a Time Capsule and have setup a WDS network for the house. The Airport Express joins the network just fine as a remote WDS device. I cannot get the Airport Extreme (v5.7) to join the same network. It just continues to make a *separate network with the same name* despite the Channel being the same, the WDS being set to remote, and the main ID of the Time Capsule has been put in correctly. In other words, since I setup the airport Express correctly, I cannot figure out for the life of me why the Airport Extreme is not joining correctly.
PLEASE HELP. I've been trying this for 6 hours now and countless total restarts by hard resets of all the equipment.

Let's double-check your WDS setup ...
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS.)
o Perform a "hard" reset on the Time Capsule (TC) and a "hard" reset on the 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
Main Base Station Setup - TC
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the TC.
o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the TC, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base
Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the AX.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AEBS
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AX.
o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the AX, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.

Very Odd Problem connecting to network please help

Ok so I have had my Macbook Pro for a while and I have both an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express in my room. So until recently I could turn on my computer and my Airport would automatically connect to the internet. Now recently I turn on or open my computer and I can still see my network but I cannot connect to it. I have restarted all the devices and my computer, but the only thing that eventually logs me on (after anywhere between 5 minutes - an hour) is waiting. But the second I close my laptop I will get booted off the Internet and I cannot connect again.
However I can still see the network I just cannot connect to it.
Also another problem I have noticed is that when in Network Setup Assistant it asks me for the password for the network, and I have entered this password many times in my life for my iPhone and for my other devices. And yet recently when I input the correct password (ive tried over 100 times) I get a message saying that the password is incorrect, when I know for a fact that I am putting the right password in.
If anyone could please help me I would be very grateful.

The Airport Extreme base station has 2 passwords, one for logging into the router, the other for your network access (assuming you have security switched on). Just make sure you are trying to enter the correct password (I know this sounds obvious and no offense is meant).
If you added the Extreme to your other router, make sure in Airport utility the Extreme is set to Bridge Mode, this will remove any incompatibility issues with 2 devices trying to obtain IP addresses from your ISP. Only one router should connect to your ISP, using password, username and relevant settings, the other is a bridge for your internal network allowing faster transfers between devices connected to say for example your extreme.
I have a Netgear DG834PN modem/router which is assigned control to connect to my ISP (as it is a modem, the Extreme Base Station isn't a modem). The Apple Extreme is connected through ethernet to the Netgear. I have all my 802.11g/b/a devices connected through the Netgear wireless network (2.4Ghz) and all my 802.11n devices connected through the Apple Extreme Base Station wireless network ('n' only @5Ghz). I also have my Mac Pro and my AppleTV connected through gigabit ethernet (through the Extreme ethernet). Everything works well. AppleTV and Mac Pro sync very quickly, my MacBook Pro connects to other computers or devices (AppleTV for streaming content) within the Apple Extreme network, wired or wireless, and allows fast transfer speeds, especially with no g/b/a devices slowing things up.
I also have a USB hub connected to the Extreme with USB printer attached and additional external storage connected, both available throughout the Extreme network to either wired or wireless devices.
It sounds a bit complicated but it is really easy to do.

BlackBerry z10 can't get access to mobile network, please help!

Hi, i got my unlocked z10 a few days ago and still i can't get access to mobile network. Only wifi have worked for me till now.. i used the same sim card as my old phone (where i i got access fine). I've tried rebooting and switched every setting on and off etc. Could any one please help me with this..

Since you are using the same sim I suggest you contact your service provider to check your provisioning.

Can't connect my Ipod Touch 2nd gen to home wireless network - please help

I have just received a 2G ipod touch today and it will not connect to my home network. I have a SKY Netgear router with numerous devices wirelessly connected with WPA security. I have input the shared network key when my Ipod asks for a password but it will not connect (even if I am stood next to my router). I just get "Unable to join the network .........". I have tried connecting via the 'other' network route but still the same result. Please help.

Here's a few things you can do to get to the bottom of the problem:
- Have you ever connected to a public hotspot? The only reason I ask is this will rule out hardware problems. If you are not close to anything, download and install the free app WiFinder from the app store. Once you have the app installed, you see what networks are around you. If nothing is working, contact Apple and either visit the Genius Bar or return it Apple.
- If you have disabled encryption in your router and you are still be prompted for a password, you need to tap on that network name and tap Forget Network. And to really make sure everything is cleaned out, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network settings.
- After your iPod restarts, use WiFinder to find your network. WiFinder will tell you whether or not you have encryption on or off and the type of encryption used. If it is still off, just tap the Connect button. If you have turned it back on, go to Settings > WiFi > Other network and enter your network name. You will be prompted for your encryption scheme and your password. WPA and WPA2 should have a password entered. WEP should have the hex key entered.
- If you still can't connect, I would check and reenter my password. Passwords are case sensitive.
- Assuming you have connected, tap the blue arrow (>) next to your network name. You should see your IP address, subnet mask, router IP address, and DNS router addresses, you are good to go.
- If you have an IP address of 169.x.x.x, your router is not supplying an IP address. Recommend router settings are:
SSID - on
DHCP - on
MAC filtering - off
Encryption - on and set to WPA or WPA2
DNS - automatic from ISP

I am new to the java forum, and I think its a fantastic idea. I am extremely stuck with my java, I have been workin on the same piece of code for at least 20 hours in total, 8 of which I spent in the last day, and to much of my frustration, the buggery code just wont compile. Im assuming many of you are probably laughing at me by now, lol, its ok, After my inital stress and hair pulling, all I could do was laugh. Essentially wot Im tryin to do, is create a cd collection program, whereby details of the cd are entered (price, quantity, title and artist) and I would like to return statistical data on the cd collection, such as total number of cds, most expensive and cheapest cds etc. As you can I see I have tried to use arrays to find out the most expensive cd, but it still wont work! Please help, anyone, as Ive exhausted myself on this piece of code, Ive been through books, and I still cant bloody do it. :( lol

First you never call your method findHighest.
Second you do not have an array of your CD's. You only have two instances of it.
Try this:

Cannot import files from ANY CD, confused and upset, please help!

This has been ruining my whole week. I got a video iPod for Christmas, and installed iTunes on my father's computer to try it out. Everything worked great. I installed iTunes on my work computer(the only computer I have with a working hard drive), and while it recognizes both the iPod and the CDs I've tried to import to my Library, every time I click the "Import" button, I get an error message that says "Error occurred while converting the file "song title." The required file could not be found." What's more, iTunes deleted all the songs I'd loaded in at my dad's house.
I installed the iTunes updates from this website. I used my computer's utilities to double-check that my DVD-ROM drive was up to date. I don't know what else to do! Please help.

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Internet Not Working on 3rd Party Network (Please help!!!)

Cool forum. Hopefully cool enough to solve this weird problem.
I own a BlackBerry Tour and live in Sweden part of the year. Since I put the 3rd party SIM in my phone and activated the account, I cannot get internet to work. I can use BIS services etc., but browsing the internet does not work....when I try it says "Could not connect tog the internet, please try again".
The weird thing is that sometimes I can browse google etc. through the BlackBerry Help! app...but other apps don't work. I'm thinking maybe it has to do with APN settings?
PLEASE HELP!!!!

I think you didn't select the Flash with SFCommand in the HTML tab inside the Template dropdown menu, that's the reason your Actions Scripts doesn't work in the html view.
To access hold down CTRL+SHIFT+F12--->HTML tab--->The first dropdown menu at the top

PCs suddenly no longer see Airport Express wireless network - please help!

I am new to this forum and I need help. Two days ago - without me making any changes to settings etc. my Airport Express wireless network at home was no longer visible to any of my devices except to the Powerbook (G4 OS 10.3.9) which controls it. From one second to the next two Vista laptops and my cell phone (Nokia, Symbian OS).
My Powerbook has no problem connecting through AE to the internet. The two laptops are both able to connect to other wireless networks so they don't seem to be the problem. I just don't understand what caused this sudden drop-off/invisibility.
I have already tried the following: resetting the base station, changing the channel on the base station (from automatic) removing the network security altogether (from WPA2). But none of the devices except the powerbook can now see or detect my network.
Please - if anyone knows what the cause of this problem could be or how to fix I would be very grateful!!

delete it and do as advised.
This isn't harmful, because it is only a preference list, so it will be created brandnew as soon as you re-setup the Airport stuff.
Mac OS X ( especially Jaguar ) has a tendency to corrupt some plists out of the blue, it is more or less harmless and can be fixed with recreating them plus permissions-repair.
Hint : repair permissions more than one time, it ALWAYS finds something to fix in Jaguar.
You cannot destroy something with these actions, because it is Unix maintance so usual routines.
A tool like cocktail or Onyx ( google them, onyx is freeware ) can help you run such ( and more ) routines on a scheduled base.
Always remember that OS X is no longer "the Mac OS", it is Unix with a nice Desktop, the critical things run hidden in the background, so it has to be treated like any Unix/Linux sort of OS, even if from the outside everything looks nice and kosher..

Sorry that I have to ask this, but your problem seems very Windows specific and I doubt it can be done in Java without the help of native code. What kind of application are you developing?

so basically i have my Cable Modem connected to my Airport Extreme(5th Gen) also my DirecTV is conncted to my airport router. I have all three things going on at the same time, my whole house has wireless from this Extreme.
whenever i reboot my internet i unplug the power cord on both the Cable Modem and Airport Extreme 5th Gen. and DirecTV plus iPad Air and a HP cpu. after reboot everything i just named all have fast wireless interenet for Two years, then last week i accidently hit forget this network(my network), after that i can't seem to get my 5th gen extreme to work, so right now i have a straight connection to my modem to my macbook pro..
help me please to troubleshoot my extreme, it still has that stupid AMBER LIGHT, i cannot install this like a new airport, so i don't know if i need a software to recover from me hitting "Forget This Network" from the Airport Utility app from my ipad air. since last week i can't fix this

Confused by C , please help

Hi guys , I have to learn C since I started studying computer engineering... The thing is that I have a slight C ++ background and I am a bit confused...
I got a simple question:
how to read the user input in C ?
in c++ the only thing I had to do was cin >> variable_name;
now I have read like 10000 ways to read user input...
how can I asign user input into an integreer with C ?
I read about this and it works... but its not very conventional.

This works... but I think there must be some easier and conventional way... help please!

I think you need to buy a good C book.
"The C Programming Language" (http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/cbook/) and "C: A Reference Manual" (http://www.careferencemanual.com/) are very good books.
Also, forget what you know about C++.
