Am very concerned about creative produ

While the creative Zen Vision is a great device, i feel there are other things creative could produce.. for exampe where is Creatives equivilent of Slimdevices (squeezebox) Creative is a Audio Hardware company you would thing that some sort of streaming device that connects to your HiFi exist in there product range.
and also why is the open source Codec like Flac missing from there devices.
Am I missing something here?

I would take the Mac to an Apple Store. Unibody Macs batteries are designed to have 80% of their capacity after 1000 cycles, and you have about 80% of the capacity after 176 cycles, so it's clear that your battery is damaged. However, as your Mac is out of warranty, you will have to pay for the battery replacement ($129 for 11, 13 and 15-inch MacBooks)

  • Long-term concerns about Creative Cloud and my current license

Say I subscribe to Creative Cloud, and it doesn't do so well. In three years, it's removed from Adobe's product offerings. The last CS I'd own is 5.5, but 9 is out, and Adobe cuts off the upgrade discount at 6. After investing $600 per year into Creative Cloud—much more in only a single year than the $400 I'm considering spending to upgrade to Design+Web Premium 6—how would Adobe treat my upgrade options? Would a concession be made to allow me to upgrade from a CS 8.5 license being that I've been an active user the whole time? Or would I have to purchase an entirely new license from scratch?
This is a very large concern for me, considering that Adobe was going to cancel the three-versions-back upgrade and implement a one-version-back upgrade policy for CS6.

I don't have an answer for you I'm afraid.
I'm not sure anyone including Adobe knows yet what will happen if the Cloud fails and they're forced to revert to perpetual licenses and retrospectively discount upgrades from CS5.5 to whatever version is current.
No doubt they're closely monitoring their Cloud adoption stats daily.
However - pure speculation follows - I suspect that the more likely scenario is the reverse: the Cloud becomes Adobe's sole method for selling software and they dispense with perpetual licenses (both boxed and downloads) altogether.
They're already on record as saying the Cloud is their preferred sales medium. They've just got to find the sweet spot between revenue/profit and value (what they include in the Cloud bundle). It's compelling enough now from where I sit but it's not for everyone yet.
However, as a CS5 perpetual user and CS6 Cloud user, I'm treating my 2012 Cloud membership as a Trial - so I can still upgrade to CS6 perpetual before CS7 ships if I feel the need to.
The possibility of Adobe going Cloud only is briefly discussed at cs5.org
    http://cs5.org/?p=2172
Possible perspective that Adobe will entirely move to the Cloud, leaving customers without any choice. Change of upgrade policy may be the first step to this.
I won’t be surprised to see CS7 be cloud only except for rare education/government/enterprise customers and then it’s game over. Larger agencies will move to that model because it’s more economical, smaller shops and freelancers will be forced to upgrade as incompatible file formats between CS7 and earlier versions migrate from .FLA to .PSD and .AI files.
    Watch this space.

  • Very concerned about Security

Today I pulled up my RealPlayer Downloader, a component of RealPlayer that allows me to download flash videos from websites, and had a very unpleasant surprise. At some point between last night and now someone used my computer to go to the MLB website for the Brewers, ESPN.com and YouTube where they watched videos of that Olympic sport where they throw that metal ball on the end of a chain.
The troubling part is, I live alone, the MacBook has been in my possession the whole time, I'm a Giants fan, I haven't been to ESPN in months and I don't even know the name of the Olympic sport. I use my University's wireless internet, which is unsecured.
There is no record of any of the site visits in Safari or Firefox histories, and a spotlight search didn't turn up anything. I'm a student at the University of Wisconsin, so someone else going to the Brewers site would not be unusual. I am/was already running Symantec Antivirus and I have/had the firewall set to stealth mode and essential services only.
How did someone do this? How can I find out if they did anything else? How can I stop them form doing it, or something worse, again?

{quote}Is there any way to tighten my MacBook's security? Because apparently I need to do so.
    {quote}
You have not provided any evidence that your macbook was hacked at all. I don't think a stand alone mac has been hacked. There was a contest not too long ago where someone hacked in through luring someone to a site using Safari, but not a stand alone machine. Now, you have this amazing hacker, that has done something that so far has not yet been done, and all he has done was visit a couple of sporting sites.... I'm not buying what you're selling buddy.
Security on the mac and PC are pretty good now so hackers have started targeting the users. It's far easier to entice a user to click on something or have them execute some code than it is to hack directly into these modern OS's. You already have the firewall turned on, so also make sure the file, screen, and any other sharing service is turned off in the sharing preference pane. That's pretty much the best the mac is going to do. The rest is up to you.

  • I have some concerns about places my teen is visiting on the internet.  The history is always cleaned and i am wondering if there is a way to see what websites have been visit throught the airport router? thanks

Hi pretty self expalanotory as in the title.  I just want to know if there is a way to access website history that is maybe stored right on the router.  Any assistance woudl be appreciated.  I am not just a nosy Dad but I am very concerned about unsafe activity that my son may be researching. Thank you.

.there is no way to access historical website history on the router
    Correct
but if I installed OpenDNS then I could track sites visited?
Correct, but you may need to install some software on each computer that you want to be able to monitor in the household. OpenDNS will walk you through the setup.
If you want to go back in time, there are also professional applications (read very expensive) that will reveal the browsing history of a given computer.....even if the browsing history has been erased by the user.
You will have to have physical access to the computer to use these applications. Post back if you need a few names.

  • Concerned about new ML....should I wait?

I want to buy 15" MBP or Air but am concerned about the new ML op. system. Overall, are people pleased with ML on a brand new machine (not an upgrade)? Would it be wise to wait for problems (as seen on Support Discussions) to get worked out?
I'm a creative director and do writing and some design work, which means I'll be running Creative Suite on my next laptop. The light weight and curved wrist rest of the Air appeals to me but I'm wondering about the speed of the MBP over the Air. I'd love to hear opinions on which new MacBook to buy.
What is difference between flash storage vs  hard drive vs solid state drive? What is a Super Drive? Duo vs Quad core? Headphone port vs Audio In/Out?
Also concerned about ML eating up time available when on battery only. Is this true on new MacBooks or just upgrades to ML on older machines?
    Thanks!

A hard drive has spinning platters and, opposed to an SSD, is very slow. SSDs and flash storage are pretty much the same - an SSD is simply flash storage enclosed in a case that will fit in a standard hard drive slot. Apple's prices on SSDs are outrageous. If you get a 15" you can buy a similar SSD that Apple sells for much less.
A SuperDrive is simply a drive that allows you to read and write optical disks (CDs and DVDs). I consider mine a must but some people rarely use them and opt for an external optical drive - from Apple or a third-party. I use mine primarily for archival storage but also ripping the occasional CD to iTunes or watching a movie. Some can do without a built-in SuperDrive and just use an external, some, like myself, prefer to have it built-in.
A quad core processor simply has four 'mini-processors' built into a single processor. A duo has only two. The quad core is much faster than a dual core.
The Air (and 13") have a single audio-out headphone jack. The 15" has both audio in and audio out jacks. I prefer the latter.
Also concerned about ML eating up time available when on battery only. Is this true on new MacBooks or just upgrades to ML on older machines?
The problem with low battery life first crept up with Lion and then got worse - for some users - after the Mountain Lion update. I haven't had any problems but a number of users have and there seems to rhyme nor reason - it's not specific to any one model of machine nor software application. Apple knows of the problem and is, presumably, working o a fix. You probably have something like a 1 in 100,000 chance (if that) of having problems with your battery life.
I also run CS6 on my late 2011 15" MacBook Pro - the CS6 Design and Web Premium suite. It's quite speedy on my machine (but then I have 16Gb of RAM and a 512GB SSD).
Hope I was able to answer a few questions...

  • DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON CREATIVE PRODU

i am writing this to let everyone know that creative is taking your money on ALL of there soundcard models with the connector for the front panel audio. they claim ac'97 compliant front audio panels are not supported. there are very limited number of cases on the market today with a hi def front audio panel. i wonder how come my inputs do not work when they should. more to the point, why is it that the onboard sound from all of the mobo's i have ever had work with both ac 97 and hi def, but this sound card will not. where is it shown on the box that this is not compliant with ac97? well i think that this is baad on the part of creative to sell something without making thiws clear on the box, instead they wish to send you an article saying it was incompatible? i am the customer i bought this product to replace my onboard, well if my onboard wroks better and i get my front audio panels then why waste my money on a POS that does not even work as it should? i got an instruction manual in the box like one that comes with an inteld945gtplr motherboard with one exception (intel instruction manual had english instructions, and had more pictured details)? not even in this fold out "instruction manual" did it state that this sound card was incompatible with ac97 connectors. i am going back to onboard and saving myself 00.00?in the process,? and i WILL NOT be buying another creative product because they are obviously not concerned about their customers,?i have seen numerous cases designed for gamers and only like 2 have a high def front panel, and all of the stuff i have found on front audio panels show that you CAN use ac97 compliant on intel hi def according to creative this is not the case at all. well my evga 680i is an intel hi def compatible header and my ac97 works on it. save yourselves some money and do not buy a creative product. don't even waste your money on a more expensi've model with the front dri've bay (why would you want to use 970 and 80's /4 inch heaphone jack which is not the standard)? creative dropped the ball on this one. if you have an extreme gamer sound card and have your front panel audio working by all means share (via e-mail so creative does not get away with knowing how to get it to work right) creative should pay a fee for this information as we spent money on this product and it does not work with most our cases and it is not made clear from the start.

the point is creti've states that the extreme gamer card will NOT work with an ac'97 case. creative needs to do some research on this, if you hook them up correctly it boils down to how to set it up in audio manager and they do not have a clue. i got this working on my own with no tech support. i would like to see evga get into the sound card market, i have their mobo (nvidia 680i reference board) and their video card 640 Mb 8800GTS (hopefully will have a second one soon in sli config). and i have had no issues but at least evga has taken time to help by researching to give the best tech support. creative does not even know that the front panel hi-def plug will in fact work with ac'97 compliant audio header dongles, even intel has a schematic on how to connect ac'97 dongles to hi-def panel connectors.
to creative:? do some research on this issue and learn what your own product is capable of. since according to you ac'97 compliant connectors do not work with this sound card i have no choice but to recommend to my customers not to buy these products and seeing as how all of the x-fi's i have seen with the bay mount panel use a /4" jack i will not recommend them as this is not standard, there is no one here that sells headphones with a /4" jack (except goodwill stores) and most of my customers do not like the use of adapters on their headphones to make it compatible.
i also no longer recommend asus products to my customers for the exact same reason, no tech support, did not know their own products, except asus just wanted to blame another manufacturer. if you at creative do not realise that the extreme gamer is ac'97 compliant (my case is ac'97 and it now my front panel works off of the card) you need to do some more reaserch on your product. build a system with an ac'97 front header dongle, and figure out the correct audio manager setting and let you customers know. there are more users with ac'97 compliant cases than hi def, to date i know of no custom cases except for 2 which are high def front panels, and most of these cases are manufactured 05 to current.

  • Should I have concerns about the integrity of Best Buy's Mac sales?

I bought my iMac OS X, Early 2008 Model from a Best Buy store. I was a naive & pensive 1st time [ever] PC buyer. The sales [kid] led me to an iMac that had been returned, and referred to it as an "open box sale." I was re-assured the Mac had been completely "wiped clean of all..." After setting it up at home, I found out different; and the previous owner had it for 4 months! Earlier at B.Buy the sales kid told me after asking "why was it returned?" His reply, "Because the screen was too big." His answer certainly didn't make sense to me then, or when I discovered [at home] that it took the 1st owner [him] so long to decide it wasn't what he wanted. So I packed up my Mac & returned to the B.Buy store to have everything cleared.
I knew I had a lot of trial & error lessons on my hands, not being a computer literate person, but evidently I like a good challenge; and that it has been! No complaints; at first I was concerned about 'doing something wrong'. I was re-assured by the Geek Squad, "You can't harm it; just explore your Mac to get to know it." Well, needless to say, not being able to follow instructions in Owner's Manuals, I'm more of a "slowly SHOW me HOW TO, and what's what" type of learner. I had to Google everything pertaining to PC terminology, steps on how to download & install, files, folders, using delete/trash, keeping all in place/order and NOT duplicating [and which one to keep if I did!] Please don't think I'm stupid; my Mac has been properly stored for 6 years, minus 8 months. I was not in the position in my life to have it set up in a secure environment. Since Jan 2014, my Mac & I have spent many hours, equalling weeks & months face-to-[screen] face!
I've had many problems since installing OS X Mavericks 10.9.4; and was very apprehensive updating due to the many unfavorable Reviews I had been researching. But I couldn't keep ignoring Apple's repeated recommendations of keeping every item updated. So I eventually found my way to all info, ON ONE PAGE! Yipee! I could not believe what I was reading! Even though I was aware my APPLE apps, plug-ins, utilities, etc. were not auto updating [set to do so]. I FINALLY found my Mac's PROBLEM. My main software, Snow Leopard (10.6.8) is GROSSLY OUTDATED! I totally spaced that due to my Mac being packed away for so long. So I'm working on that. I'M SHARING all MY INFO hoping to help other's who are at my technical level. SO all YOU COMPUTER WHIZZES can SCOFF, GIGGLE all YOU WANT . I take no offense, I'm kidding ☀️.
BUT!! Since learning how & where to navigate through the system's files & such, and seeing documents, folders and files that strike me as odd, I have a NAGGING ITCH something is there from the ORIGINAL OWNER. He CREATED SOMETHING, a way into my system, CURRENTLY. I've had to Google 'plist names', and with the help of a very longtime good Facebook friend in New York State, I am learning more from his knowledge & advice. ALL my APPLE security settings are set-up, deny's & allows, and I'm not downloading Videos from MeTube , or anywhere else for that matter. I only download SAFE game apps, and I'm the ONLY user. ANY IDEAS or SUGGESTIONS COMP WHIZZES? Besides updating my software; I'm just trying to find out [on that subject] if I have to buy, download/install all Software Programs of past to be able to run the current OS X Mavericks? Which I read already has a 10.9.5 version. I wanted to become a part of the "Preview Program" for Yosemite; but nope, I cannot!
REASONS for MY PREVIOUS OWNER Concerns: My system got so bad, while attempting to Chat on fb w/one friend; every letter I typed, the rainbow ball would spin forever, highlight & delete partial words, and would totally crash. I downloaded an anti Virus app for Mac; scanned my system [took forever]; ending w/a report of 55 VIRUSES!! Many files could not be scanned too. My Mac HD Encrypted Logical Partition Drive un-mounted at least two times, and there's one too many files than there should be. But the file name was not shown, only that the count is off. HELP?

While I am no fan of Best Buy and would not buy a lightbulb from them I doubt you issues have anything to do with your iMac and more to do with your lack of experience and simply getting bad advice. Judging by you post I suspect you have loaded your computer down with a lot of crapware and that  has caused it's problems. For example running antivirus apps on a Mac not only is a waste of time, it's a waste of money, system resources and will eventually create more problems that it solves. Please begin educating yourself on the subject by reading Thomas Reeds articles on the subject, Thomas is a frequent and knowledgeable contributor to these forums. You can find his webpage at http://www.reedcorner.net/tech-guides/
The good news is here are absolutely no, zero, zippo viruses for OS X. There are other types of malware available (for example trojans) however they differ greatly from viruses in that the use has to download and install them, whereas viruses do not work that way. OS X is not like MS Windows and is extremely secure.
My suggestion at this point would be to clean your computer of the crapware (including antivirus apps) however before doing so please download and install EtreCheck and post its report. Then we can see how your computer has been configured and begin to give you some advice on the next steps.

  • Concerned about possible....well...virus?

I've been digging through these forums so perhaps virus isn't right. But I'm concerned. And could use some help, guidance.
I'll start by saying that today I had someone hack into my paypal account and make an unauthorized transaction. I received an e-mail about the transaction and I did click the link in the e-mail and got to a login screen that required my credit card # or my bank account #. I didn't give either and closed the window. I went directly to paypal, com and found a phone # and called them. Indeed there was an unauthorized transaction that I've since gotten rid of.
During this time I sent an e-mail to my husband with a high level comment about the paypal issue. This e-mail was sent via entourage. That was at 3pm, however, in my sent folder it looks like I sent it to myself. At 3:04 I received a reply back that appeared to come from me. Inside the note said for me to ignore the problem that paypal sometimes has these things happen. This was of course alarming. I've now turned off my MAC.
Any ideas what may be going on? Could someone have gotten into my MAC somehow? or is there another explanation?
    Very concerned....thanks.

The Paypal hacker has probably gotten your password and email address, and may have logged into your email (which explains the strange message). Turning your Mac off won't stop that; you've got to change your Paypal and email passwords, as soon as possible. If you use the same password for anything else significant (i.e., online banking, etc.) change that too.
I would add to this that anyone using any form of online money transactions/purchases etc. these days must invent in an identity protection program. There are several, but only one or two actually work. Nobody can use any of my cards without my permission and any charges outside my usual habits are temporarily blocked and I get a phone call for approval.
I had a bad experience with PayPal years ago. Ever since then I have been wary or both PayPal and their sister eBay. There is a lot of "sharing" going on with credit card numbers.
I only make online transactions with what I consider fully reputable companies such as Amazon.
I use PayPal only in an emergency or when it is the only option. PayPal has a credit card number that I never use for anything else and I check it regularly.
Online shopping is not safe as it once was. And even then it was never really safe.
Of course buying via a cellphone is not secure either.

I've read that Promise Pegasus2 R6 thunderbolt 2 series does not sell replacement parts (no replacement parts for any of the Pegasus line). I'm buying the new MacPro but am concerned about spending $2K for storage (12tb version) that may break and cannot be fixed (am told that one must purchase a new unit if a part breaks). What are others buying for storage for the new MacPro? Thanks so much for your help.
Discussion about this issue at MacWorld.com:  http://www.macworld.com/article/2082783/first-look-promises-pegasus2-r6-thunderb olt-2-raid-array.html

I've used the original Pegasus R6 units for a couple of years now and have been very pleased with them.  On the two occasions I've had to call on their technical sujpport, I've found them readily available, knowledgeable, and very helpful.  In one case it involved the reset of a unit after a power failure at an inopportune time; in the other case it was a question about upgrading disk drives to higher capacities (1 Gb gto 4 Gb).  I was pleased to learn that their tech support people were in California and as good if not better than upper-tier AppleCare reps. The hardware itself has functioned flawlessly so far.

D.p.middleton the Adobe Application Manager has been available for quite some time.  It not only allows Creative Cloud users to install their applications but also downloads and applies applicable updates.  In addition it is also responsible for the licensing and managing your agreement to the terms and conditions of the EULA.
    2. this could be due to you selecting a trial subscription to the Creative Cloud?  If you go to one of the Adobe Creative products and select Help>Updates it will launch the update portion of the Adobe Application Manager which I believe is the portion you are looking for?
#3 I believe this was already mostly covered in the answer to #2.
#4 the Adobe Application Manager also receives periodic updates which affects both perpetual and Creative Cloud subscription users.
I hope this provides you many of the answers you are looking for?  If not please feel free to respond back with any additional inquiries which you have.  Also if you are experiencing any difficulties with the update process please post this as well.  It may not be necessary to have a full understanding of the inner workings of the Adobe Application Manager to help you resolve your difficulties.
