Amarok 1.4.1
Hello!
Just a simple question, i'm not asking for it.
What about amarok? version 1.4.1 is out since 2 of July, and it isn't in testing at least.
And the simple answer is that it's already flagged out-of-date, so it should be along soon, or some other time.
If you're in a hurry, get the PKGBUILD, change the version number, and build it yourself.

[solved] Problem with Amarok and flac-files
When I installed Arch for the first time a couple of months ago, I was happy to find that some flac-files that didn't play in Amarok on my Debian installation was now played back perfectly. However, upon trying to play these files today, Amarok refuses to play them. I get an error stating that there is no suitable demux plugin for the files. Other flacs play back fine though, and the problem files play back perfectly in mplayer.
Another thing I would be very happy to resolve is that I have a few files that use japanese in their tags. IIRC these displayed correctly in Amarok on my Debian install, but in Arch all I see is squares where there should be japanese, despite me installing both arphic-ukai and arphic-uming packages. What am I missing?
All help appreciated!
Last edited by Emphrygian (2007-04-20 22:36:45)Your tip worked like a charm and the files now play perfectly in Amarok once again.
I solved my second problem by installing the ttf-sazanami package from AUR and adding both sazanami gothic and sazanami mincho as substitute fonts for Sans Serif (my default font) in qtconfig (not sure that I really needed both though, but hey, it works now ).

Hi guys, I'm having problem with Amarok 2. When I start it the notification says "The audio playback device HDA Intel (CONEXANT Analog) does not work. Falling back to HDA NVidia, HDMI 0 (HDMI Audio Output) ". Amarok starts normally but can't open any song. The same thing happens when I try to open a video with Dragon player(but I don't use so this doesn't matter).
VLC, MPlayer and Youtube have no problem playing videos or sounds, so I could play music with VLC but you'd agree it's not really a music player.
(I tried installing Clementine, but it has it's own problems, saying "Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in." (but I don't like Clementine anyway))
Another thing that bothers me is that the hardware sound buttons don't affect these programs.
Could someone help me with this?there are these errors (several times):
amarok: [CollectionDB] [ERROR!] [virtual QStringList SqliteConnection::query(const QString&)] sqlite3_compile error:
amarok: [CollectionDB] [ERROR!] no such table: directories
amarok: [CollectionDB] [ERROR!] on query: SELECT dir, changedate FROM directories;

amarok: [CollectionDB] [ERROR!] on insert: INSERT INTO directories SELECT * FROM directories_temp;
QDom: saving invalid character , the document will not be well-formed
and when I try to create a playlist it looks normal:
amarok: [PlaylistBrowser] Creating playlist
amarok: [PlaylistBrowser] Saving Playlist to: /home/matej/.kde/share/apps/amarok/playlists/Untitled.m3u
amarok: Loading playlist
amarok: [ThreadWeaver] Job completed: PlaylistReader. Jobs pending: 0
and also load one:

There are also some errors of GUI (QT, KDE), but these are I think a little bit off-topic. -
Getting Creative Zen player to connect through amarok [SOLVED]
Edited 12-27 to include new info
I'm trying to get myCreative Zen player to connect through amarok but am having some problems. After some looking around I figured out the libmtp in the extra repository doesn't support this player, but the newest versions do. I made a new package for libmtp-0.2.4 and installed it since there's been some tweaks that affect this player since 0.2.2 which is in testing. I also had to recompile amarok since one of libs changed a name with the new libmtp. The instructions from libmtp mentioned udev rules needed to be defined, which was done by copying a file from the source code into /etc/udev/rules.d. That file (minus the parts relating to other players, which is pretty much the same as here):
# UDEV-style hotplug map for libmtp
# Put this file in /etc/udev/rules.d
ACTION!="add", GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
ATTR{dev}!="?*", GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", GOTO="libmtp_usb_rules"
# The following thing will be deprecated when older kernels are phased out.
SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", GOTO="libmtp_usb_device_rules"
GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
LABEL="libmtp_usb_rules"
# Creative ZEN 8GB
ATTR{idVendor}=="041e", ATTR{idProduct}=="4157", SYMLINK+="libmtp-%k", MODE="666"
GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
LABEL="libmtp_usb_device_rules"
# Creative ZEN 8GB
ATTRS{idVendor}=="041e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="4157", SYMLINK+="libmtp-%k", MODE="666"
GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
LABEL="libmtp_rules_end"
When I plug the player to my usb port dmesg gives
usb 5-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
As my normal user amarok doesn't seem to recognize anything, and mtp-detect gives:
libmtp version: 0.2.4
Attempting to connect device(s)
usb_claim_interface(): Operation not permitted
LIBMTP PANIC: Unable to initialize device 1
LIBMTP PANIC: configure_usb_devices() error code: 7 on line 1561
Detect: There has been an error connecting. Exiting
As root mtp-detect gives me a bunch of output that seems like it's doing what it should, also while it's spitting this out the screen on the player changes to say it's docked, which wasn't happening as the normal user. This makes me think it's some permissions issue. I did find things from google telling me that sometimes the user needs to be added to a certain group to use libmtp, though it seemed somewhat distro dependent. My main user is in the following groups: dbus hal network audio optical storage scanner camera users thinkpad
However I don't think my problems are solely permission related, since even as root amarok won't recognize the player. I can use gnomad2 as root, which mostly works, though it crashes when I try and close gnomad after adding music and the player thinks it's still docked even after unplugging it. I had to use a pin to reset it just to turn it off. When I ran it from a console I got the following output at the end after the crash
PTP: Closing session
ERROR: Could not close session!
inep: usb_get_endpoint_status(): Protocol error
outep: usb_get_endpoint_status(): No such device
usb_clear_halt() on IN endpoint: No such device
usb_clear_halt() on OUT endpoint: No such device
usb_clear_halt() on INTERRUPT endpoint: No such device
The application 'gnomad2' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the application.
Any suggestions for where to go from here?

I've been meaning to post an update about my issues. I've figured out that when I connect the player it creates device nodes with the root group. Some have permissions set to 666, which seems to fit with the udev rules I posted. But some of them are only rw for owner and group, others only have read permissions. As a test I tried changing the permissions by hand to 666, and I can use gnomad as my regular user, though it's buggy and seems to crash randomly (not just when I transfer files like I originally thought). I haven't been able to test what amarok does, since for some reason it stopped working this weekend and I haven't had a chance to figure out what happened. It seems there some problem with the udev rules, but I don't know much about how that works to figure out what's going wrong. -
Creative Zen (and other MTP players) and Amarok: A quick guide
Hi. Odds are if you're looking at this you've been directed here by a search engine because you've typed in something to the effect of Creative Zen+Amarok or MTP+Amarok. This is meant to be a quick and dirty little rundown of what you need to do to get your Zen or possibly other MTP player working. This isn't a scientific paper and thus there will be many many variables that may or may not have anything to do with getting it to work, and may not work with every other MTP player out there. Now, down to business.
The first thing you probably want to have is libmtp, Amarok, and libusb. In my case I did it with libmtp 0.2.6.1-1, Amarok 1.4.10-2, and libusb 0.1.12-3. Others have apparently gotten this working with older versions so if there is some reason you can't upgrade or you happen to be a time traveler who printed this out before disrupting the natural chronological order this might work even with older versions. If you do however happen to have an older version of Amarok you might have to compile in libmtp support, but this is beyond the scope of this little guide. Google it. Also my user belongs to audio, optical, video, storage, network, Hal, Dbus, and wheel. The only groups I believe are necessary are storage, audio, Hal and Dbus. But I haven't tested under those conditions
For some reason when libmtp is installed it doesn't install a set of udev rules, so the first thing you need to do is is create a file called:
/etc/udev/rules.d/65-libmtp.rules

This is the basic set of identifiers for Media Devices on Amarok. Amarok does indeed keep a page which may or may not be updated http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Media_Device:MTP.
As it says on that page we want to make sure that the device is recognized. If your device is listed on the list above then you can skip straight to the part about libmtp but if it isn't then you need to start with libusb to construct your devices I.D.
lsusb-v
You should see a fairly sizeable output, but what we're interested in is at the very top (assuming you only have your media device plugged in).
In my case it's:
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 041e:4157 Creative Technology, Ltd
and even in that all we really care about is the ID:041e:4157. The first number is the idVendor and the second is the idProduct. All you have to do is copy one of the other examples and subsistute your numbers in mind and name.
# Creative Zen
SYSFS{idVendor}=="041e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="4157", SYMLINK+="libmtp-%k", MODE="666", GROUP="audio"
You probably noticed that GROUP="audio" on the end. I don't know whether or not it is significant but others have mentioned that they could not get it to work until they had that. So I would add that to any device I want to use if it doesn't work and you've done everything else
Next you want to see if libmtp detects your device. Go back to the console and type:
mtp-detect
You should get a pretty long output something like this:
Attempting to connect device(s)
PTP: Opening session
PTP_ERROR_IO: Trying again after re-initializing USB interface

WMPInfo.xml Does not exist on this device
PTP: Closing session
OK.
To someone who know what they're doing, all of that code might mean something, but to me the only thing that counts is the OK at the end and that it obviously sees the device. If this doesn't happen it may be that your permissions for the 65-libmtp.rules file is wrong, So just chmod 666 for it and that should solve your problem.
Now the only thing left to do is Amarok. Fire up Amarok, go to settings. Click on media devices and add device. Very important. For the longest time I was beating my head against nearby inanimate objects because I had tried to add it manually before and accomplished nothing and made the foolish assumption that I had to auto detect it as all the people who solved their problems stated that they plugged it in and it simply worked. Anyways, add device, name it whatever your little heart desires (I simply named mine Creative_Zen) and select MTP device for the plugin and click ok. You should then be able to connect from the media device window. You may not be able to transfer any files without restarting Amarok like I did, but it's working now! Huzzah!
I apologize to the Forum Mods, I felt I needed to make this after all the time I spent trying to get it working and have no blog or personal website to post it on (le gasp! One could understand not having a website, but no blog in this day and age!? Scandalous!) and don't have any method to truly host it for long periods (perhaps indefinite) of time. This could go in the wiki, but since it's not focused so much on Arch I'm not sure if it belongs there.
I take no credit for finding this stuff, others online did all the hard work and this is just my condensed version of what I did. Good luck!I was given an old 1GB Memorex MMP8568-SPT. When connected, Amarok detects it as an MTP device. What an unreliable pile of ****!
Anyway, I found the manual online and by holding the "play/pause" key down for more than three seconds, lo and behold, it switches to a simple USB flash drive mode which device managers pick up, drag and drop in dolphin etc etc. Phew! -
[Solved] Amarok v2.8 doesn't start
Hi,
With the last Amarok update (v2.8), i am getting a notification at startup :
Amarok could not find any collection plugins. It is possible that Amarok is installed under the wrong prefix, please fix your installation using:
$ cd /path/to/amarok/source-code/
$ su -c "make uninstall"
$ cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` && su -c "make install"
$ kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental
$ amarok

Yeah, removing ~/.kde solves most of the problems but you lose the customization you have done, so it's the last choice.
For most of us, removing config folders/files is the first thing which comes to mind. But i only removed "~/.kde4/share/apps/amarok" first, then i realized that there is some more folders related to Amarok at "~/.kde4/share/config/".
A quick search at home dir is useful on removing config files.

Oh no. Can't uninstall or reinstall Akregator or Amarok. Not in DB.
Well, this is probably a typical newbie screw-up here. When I first installed Arch, I decided to try kdemod. Even though it's way cooler than standard kde, I'm kind of getting tired of that look. So...I followed the guidelines for uninstall from the kdemod faq that basically calls for grepping 'kdemod' and uninstalling everything individually via -Rd in pacman including qt-enhanced.
Ok, I didn't think this through very well at the time. I really LOVE akregator and amarok...so I neglected to uninstall those pkgs with everything else. Dumb. Really dumb. Now, I have the icons in my menu but OF COURSE they're broken. Now the problem is that I can't 'pacman -Rd akregator' because I get:
error: failed to add target 'akregator' (could not find or read package)
I also cannot 'pacman -Sy akregator' because I get:
error: 'akregator': not found in sync db
I don't know what to do now. I would like to go ahead and install those things again and use them b/c I don't care for rhythmbox or exaile (I can live with exaile tho) and I don't know of a good alternative to akregator yet.
Can anyone suggest anything? I'm in a pickle. :-(
Many tks,
Carrie
(5x5)Very well, I'll go into excruciating detail.
"Bon Echo" was (is?) the codename for firefox 2.0 when it was in alpha form. That's why you see that name associated with Firefox on those pages you've found. We're aware of this.
Mozilla has very strict rules regarding their trademark of the "Firefox" name - any modifications to the code they provide may (afaik) no longer be called "Firefox" as they are no longer strictly the product called "Firefox". We had a lengthy discussion about this issue as developers and decided that, since we apply a few patches to get our firefox package in proper working order, that we wouldn't go through the hassle we might get if we continue to brand the application firefox.
So, in our build scripts, we disabled branding, which is something that (again afaik) mozilla added to the build process to make it easier for distros like ours to remove their trademarked "Firefox" name from the application. By default, this removes "Firefox" and the well-known firefox logo from the application in all places, and replaces "Firefox" with "Bon Echo" - the codename they used through the alpha process - and the firefox logo with a generic globe-like icon.
We currently package firefox version 2.0.0.11:
$ pacman -Qi firefox
Name : firefox
Version : 2.0.0.11-1
which is distinctly NOT the alpha versions. The name remains 'firefox' simply because we don't want to over-confuse users - we try to keep things as simple as possible, and telling people to install the "bonecho" package when they're looking for firefox isn't exactly simple.
To my knowledge, this is something that other distros do as well, and something that has been discussed in this forum when we first made the switch from "Firefox" to "Bon Echo" as other users were curious. We often recommend people search the forums before asking questions - a search for "Bon Echo" in the forum's search engine would have turned up at least a couple helpful results, in particular:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38629
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=34136
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=33622
Hopefully that clears up any confusion you may have.
You can trust me. I try not to talk about things I don't know. -

OP should first go through the wiki page of ALSA to ensure that his ALSA setup is working correctly. There aren't many sound setups that do not work under ALSA. If OP is relying on another sound setup then he should follow the appropriate wiki and tell us so.
@otto88: It would also help if you would try to explain what your intentions were. I'm assuming you merely want to have sound working and not configure some fancy setup. In that case you should just stick to a basic setup and follow the wiki step by step (don't skip any line and if you don't understand something, you figure that out or you ask people, don't just ignore it).
For instance I don't even have those /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf even though I have 2 sound devices, while you seem to only have 1 sound device
otto88 wrote:cat /proc/asound/modules

So your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf in that case is totally unnecessary, let alone that you don't even have the snd_mia module loaded so why do you even configure alsa to load it at index 1. You aren't supposed to simply copy and paste the configurations from the wiki. Those configurations are merely there to give you an idea on how to make your own configuration.
When you have ensured that your sound is been set up correctly then you can start with the most basic mplayer configuration. You keep the /etc/mplayer/example.cong configuration file totally commented out (like you have atm) and your ~/.mplayer/config should only contain
ao=alsa
ok i just followed the wiki and your advices and doesn't work, yet

Last edited by kapz (2009-05-09 19:37:58)You must edit /usr/include/QtCore/qtconcurrentreducekernel.h and add
#include <QtCore/qthreadpool.h>
along with the other "#include" lines at the beginning of the file.
You will also need patches for the current libgpod version. Grab the updated PKGBUILD and sources here : http://jm.ambrosino.free.fr/archlinux/_ … s/amarok2/
Or the i686 binary : http://jm.ambrosino.free.fr/archlinux/i … pkg.tar.gz -
[SOLVED] Amarok 2 make fails
Hi,
I'm trying to install Amarok 2 via yaourt with this package: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19633
However, it fails with several errors. I've done some searching, but I can't find any solution that's helpful to me/one I understand (still being new to Arch).
Here is the output:

Does anyone know how I can fix this? I suppose waiting for Amarok 2 to arrive in the main repos is the best solution, but I don't know when that will happen.

EDIT: Curse you, slammer. Beat me to it
The "mtpcollection" in the error line and this earlier note in the program:
" Found MTP but version requirements not met "
Give me the impression that it may be because of an outdated libmtp. Try pacman -Rd libmtp and install libmtp-devel from AUR, perhaps?
I didn't see that bit, actually. If I had maybe I would have thought of the solution myself.
But thanks guys, it worked. ^_^
Any idea as to when we'll get a package in the repos? -
[solved] Volume control in amarok doesn't work anymore
Hi,
since today in amarok (2.4.1) the volume control doesn't work anymore. I can change the level on the switch on the top right but it doesn't change the actual volume.
The volume control in my KDE tray works as usual.

[Solved]Amarok don't play files with non latin1 characters in filename
I know that this problem is not in amarok, i patched phonon from aur http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=27465
/src/import/gstreamer/mediaobject.cpp
at line 365 in bool MediaObject::createPipefromURL(const QUrl &url)
QByteArray encoded_cstr_url = url.toEncoded();
m_datasource = gst_element_make_from_uri(GST_URI_SRC, encoded_cstr_url.constData(), (const char*)NULL);
//for utf8 locale replace toLocal8Bit to toAscii
//toLocalFile fails for files with "?" in filenames. toLocalFile("a?c.s") => "a"
+ if ( url.toString().indexOf("file://") == 0 )
+ g_object_set(m_datasource, "location", url.toString().replace(0,7,"").toLocal8Bit().constData(), NULL);
if (!m_datasource)
return false;
and now amarok plays ALL files

Music not playing in Amarok, Exaile, Rythmbox and Totem
After a major upgrade a while ago, I'm no longer able to listen to music on Amarok. I tried to switch between Xine and GStreamer backends, with no results. I tried to listen to my music using Exaile, Rythmbox and Totem and they all failed. The only player that can play my music is mplayer.
I looked at the audio settings on mplayer and found out it was using Alsa. I changed that of Vlc and was able to listen to my mp3 songs using VLC as well. I have a non problematic sound on Skype, Flash, and my movies.
I was wondering if anyone knows how I can get back the audio for Amarok back without interfering it with Skype and Flash. I've had major troubles with sound conflicts between Flash and other apps and the Mic of my web cam. All I want now is the Amarok being able to play my music again.
Thanks in advance.Exaile, Rythmbox and Totem needs gstreamer0.10-plugins

[Solved] KDE 4 and Amarok 1.4 Media Keys
I've been using KDE 4.2 since it was released. I had installed Amarok 2.0.1 via AUR and was having issues with that version not being compatible with the newest libgpod. I upgraded to 2.0.2 and now Amarok's not able to build my collection database. Add to that the fact that Amarok 2.0.2 still lacks many of the features I liked about 1.4, I've downgraded to Amarok 1.4 in the repositories.
That being said, with Amarok 2 I had multimedia keys working perfectly (skip/next, play/pause, stop) from the KDE global shortcuts settings menu. However, I can't seem to get it to work with 1.4. According to this post (which is for Debian, but it should still work I would imagine), it does seem possible to get Amarok 1.4 to work with the KDE 4 shortcut interface, but I can't figure it out. I tried searching the forums here for people running into this issue, but didn't find anything. Anybody have any insight, or perhaps a thread I've missed?
Last edited by lumpy211 (2009-04-10 14:05:20)Thanks very much for the reply, samwise.
I feel a bit silly, though. After playing around a bit in Amarok 1.4, there's an option of setting shortcuts, including global ones. Setting the global shortcuts for play/pause, stop, skip, etc worked great It's not what I was originally looking for (integration into the KDE 4 global shortcut menu), but at least it works.
As for Amarok 2, I agree it's got some big issues. It's a shame that such a good player has gone so wrong. As much as I like the Shoutcast plugin in 2, there are just too many things I don't like, such as the widget area (I wish I could turn it off as I don't use it), the lack of an equalizer, how it handles idv3 tagging, and general bugginess (my original issue with not building my music database). -
Amarok: Could not find any collection plugins
Hello,
after some recent updates, my amarok refuses to start giving the message that no collection plugins where found due to an incompatible KDE library version. Searching the internet revealed no cure... All other KDE apps are working fine, the system is up to date and I tried running both kbuildsycoca4 and ldconfig.
Any idea?
Thanks!

[root@localhost custompkg]# pacman -R amarok-base
error: could not find amarok-base in database
[root@localhost custompkg]#
I can`t remove Amarok, but it`s playing now. :-o
Besides Amarok works unstable, sometimes 1min, 30min, 10h and dissapear. His database is SQLite.
I think that some screwed (interrupted) pacman update (-Syu) did all this things.
Caused that my Amarok is more unstable than ever. Earlier he had only 1 disappearance/day (always working 24/24/7). Now even 1st song can shut him down. It`s random, without console errors 1 sec before his disappearance.
What do you think about it?
^^
P.S.
I`ve noticed that now he`s playing 40min already (lol), but it`s deceptive. :-/
