Amateur/Family HD Editing

Hello, We would like to edit Video tapes to a 1Tb HD and compile a number of HD quality videos as simply as possible. We would show some on the Apple TV and some would be burnt onto Blueray (eventually!) and sent to distant family etc.
As I am a strict beginner but have played with PC based systems before and the new iMovie system, I would like to have any advise anyone cares to share before I go down any tortuous path of discovery as I did with the pictures. For us the image quality is important but it does not need to be a professional editing result.
1) What system upgrades should I consider (have MAC pro 2gb 1tb for HDV storage
2) Blueray burner?
3) Final Cut Pro (easy like Aperture?) or iMovie (want full HD end result) - combination?
4) What high level workflow steps should I roughly follow?
5) Anything else?
Very grateful for any input on any or all of these. Thanks in advance, Floor

For ease of use and speed in turning your backlog of tapes into movies, I would recommend iMovie 08 (also known as iMovie version 7).
You can import in up to full 1080i. The footage will be maintained at that resolution in the iMovie event.
At the time you render your project, it will be exported at 960x540 (if you use the large pre-set). This is the largest size that the Apple TV can handle, and it upscales easily on a good TV back to 1080i. I am getting good results with it.
You can also export to quicktime using iMovie 08, and render in full 1080i. Currently, there are limited ways to play a full 1080i file. 1) on your PC, 2) on a PlayStation 3, or 3) (very new) BluRay.
The 1080i file will be quite large, and will not be suitable for streaming over the internet or for an Apple TV. (Note: iMovie 08 does not have the capability to output to tape.)
For the BluRay option, the technology is very new, and I am waiting for some pioneers to report back before I jump in. If you are an early adopter, you might try Toast 9 as an authoring tool. Roxio is advertising the Toast 9 will author BluRay. Previous versions of Toast would do Data dvds only for BluRay. You will need an external BluRay burner, and I have no insight on which is best.
The Apple tools (iDVD, Final Cut Studio DVD Studio Pro) do not support BluRay yet.
Final Cut Pro is an entirely different tool. A skilled professional could probably use it to create a home video almost as fast as with iMovie, but you would also have the full capabilities to produce broadcast quality movies, commercials, animations, graphics, etc. There would be a steep learning curve, but if you see yourself moving toward the need for this, it may be worth it.

  • FCE, Sony HD Camera, Family Video Editing, & Burning (HD?)DVD

Ok. Here goes ... I am a new iMac enthusiast who has "seen the light". That being said, I will be purchasing my first iMac in 30 days and I am hopefull that my expectation(s) do not fall flat because they are unrealistic. The only expectation in which there appears to be some doubt is this ... I am planning to convert all of my family videos (present formats of VHS, VHS-C, & AVCHD) to a HD format on a DVD, or at least to another electronic hardware such as a hard drive or a library of SD cards. Well, how many holes do I have in my plan? Before you answer, allow me to tell you my understanding of the barriers. First of all the actual conversion of VHS format to a digital format. I do have a Plextor Digital Video Converter with which I have, in the past, successfully converted the analog VHS format to a digital format and saved on a Windows PC, so I do have some experience with that effort. I do understand the labor intensive exercise this could prove to be. Second, I anticipate the VHS-C conversion to be about the same process. However, what about the video that I presently have on my Sony HDR-SR11? I have already done some importing and editing of said digital video via my daughter's MacPro & iMovie, but what about burning it to DVD? Of course, when I burned the video to DVD it converted to standard format. I want it to be in a HD format. From what I have seen in forums and various discussions on the net, this is almost impossible without some relatively complicated manipulation via Toast 10, BluRay drive, etc. type effort. What is the deal? Why the black hole of interface when it comes to burning digital video to a HD format, even when the original source is HD? It seems to me that there is a huge opportunity for Apple to capture a tremendous segment of business by providng an "Apple-like" seemless process of conveting (AVC)HD video and enabling the burning (archiving) of such video to a digital disk in either iMovie or FCE or whatever, be it a DVD or SD card.
Ok ... back to my question. Is the gap as large as I understand it to be? Is there no other way to accomplish this task? Is FCE a viable option and/or tool in this effort or not? Am I better off using Toast 10 or is that not even the answer? Help!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I think your expectations are on the whole very realistic, and FCE would certainly help in what you seem to be wanting to do. For converting old VHS tapes, an analog to DV converter will do the trick. You simply plug in the converter to your camera, and it should convert the analog to a DV format that you can capture directly into FCE with the DV Converter preset to make things easier for you.
As for using AVCHD, FCE does not edit it natively but will convert it upon ingest to Apple Intermediate Codec for editing natively. Not much quality is lost in this conversion, and the Log and Transfer interface within FCE that you use to ingest AVCHD from your camcorder is top notch.
The thing you have to understand about HD-DVDs is that they are very costly to produce and view, with a rather small viewer base. It is possible as you said to burn HD DVDs using Toast or the DVD Studio Pro that comes with Final Cut Studio. Even then you would need a separate Blue-ray disc burner to hook up to your computer, the expensive HD discs themselves, and an HD DVD reader to hook up to your HD TV. I guess the reason why iDVD does not offer HD DVD burning is that there are a relatively small amount of people who require it or have the funds to make it work smoothly. Very few people have HD DVD readers in their homes anyway, so you can be assured that most DVDs you would burn would be played solely on your machine.
Do not give up hope! SD DVDs still preserve pretty good quality, are easy to use with the software installed on the Mac, and are assured to play on the majority of TVs owned by people today. If you are bent on getting the HD to work for your TV, Ian's helpful post on [viewing HD videos|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10506824&#10506824] with an inexpensive media player might make more sense for you.
So all in all, FCE is a viable tool for most things you would like to do with video. However, if you are sure you want to burn to HD DVDs you will need other software and equipment than what comes with your Mac.

  • Family sharing edit child age

Is there any way to correct a child's birthdate with regard to an Apple ID and Family Sharing?
It should be an understandable request, since an input mistake was made with setting her birthdate.
I did not know that setting the birthdate would be an irrevocable setting, since there was no warning about this during the process.
In addition, I cannot remove the account with the mistaken age to start over, due to the message: "Children under 13 cannot be removed from Family Sharing..."
If there is no way to correct a mistaken birthdate, then this feature should be updated to allow it somehow; possibly by allowing a parent to sign in and update it or to request the parent account password to confirm a change of child's birthdate within the Manage Apple ID interface.

You can set restrictions by age rating by going to Settings>General>Restrictions>Apps on his device.  (Caution: don't forget the restrictions password or you will have to restore it as a new device, without using a backup, in order to remove the restrictions.)
Or, you can hide the apps you don't want other to be able to download using iTunes on your computer, as explained here: iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases.  Just be aware that this will hide them from everyone.

  • What new setup would you get for editing video in iMovie?

Hey gang. I'm upgrading all the electronics in my home and would love some buying and configuring advice. This question could go in the desktop discussion group as well, but the main thing that will tax the next system is family video editing and (temporary) storage. What desktop would you get? iMac or maybe Mac Mini? What camcorder? Canon Vixia ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/838768-REG/Canon_M50_HF_M50.html )? I want movies to load quickly and easily, so was thinking of one with SD card media.  Time Capsule? (One advisor said to go with another router). And if you were going to get a new TV, what would you get? Flat panel or projector? Yeah, I know: my credit card is gonna be lovin' me.  Been saving up, though, and just built all new furniture for my home office, so I can't wait to load it up with nice new gear. Thanks for any advice!

Sorry to correct that Karsten - you are always right normally
    From the Apple Store ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD033LL/A/time-capsule-3tb?fnode=4d )
    Easy wireless networking.
Connect your DSL or cable modem to Time Capsule, then quickly set it up with the easy-to-use AirPort Utility, which is available as download for both Mac OS X and Windows. In minutes, you and up to 50 others can use your Mac computers or PCs to surf the web, stream video, share photos and more — without wires.3
I think that earlier versions fit your description, but the latest does have wireless networking. It works like the Airport Extreme base station.

  • Why downsizing the edited picture while saving?

After saving edited pictures with the app for Android, it seems like the pictures are saved with lower resolution.  Is there a possibility to save full resolution?  How and where to change this setting?
I did not know this until I came back from holiday. Because I liked my edited pictures better, I deleted the original once.  When showing them to friends and family the edited pictures where much smaller as the deleted original once.  Is it possible to change this in the future?
    Thanks for information,
    Ans

I did some testing and got the following result:  the orginal picture is 2592 x 1944.  After only cropping a little piece from the original and then pressing the save icon the picture is saved 889 X 740.  The same original picture edited by changing the exposure and pressing the save icon is saved 1024 x 768. I tested with a second picture, with the same result.  It happens as well if you select first the pic and then edit, or first edit and then selecting the pic.
It would be great if you could find a solution.  The free app has a lot of feature.  Hopefully we can use them in the future and keep the orginal seize of our picture.

  • I am working on a book and want to send it to someone to help edit, how can I do this

I am working on a photo book in iPhoto and would like to send it to another member of the family for editing before I publish.  How can I do this?

    Not really possible in general
a book is simply entries in the iPhoto database and to transfer it you must transfer the entire iPhoto database
You could preview it and send the resulting PDF but typically that is VERY large
Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.

  • FCE HD 3.5 Family Pack?

Please answer a simple question: Was there a family pack edition of Final Cut Express HD 3.5? Thank You.

Ian, really, how many pints of Guinness have you had tonight? <grin> Hanging hardly compares to a software vendor protecting its intellectual property rights through license terms. The license is what it is. Apple didn't go back and change the old licenses. Whether or not they a) would have any way of knowing or b) would pursue you if they knew if you had installed 3.0 on a second machine in your own home is another matter. They probably wouldn't. But that doesn't make the behavior right, or legal. And I don't think our posts should in any way encourage that kind of behavior. You agreed to the terms when you opened the package. No one put your head in a noose and made you open the package.

  • Importing and editing footage with two different cameras

I am editing a film that has footage caught and imported from two different cameras. Some of the footage is from a handheld HD camera that I have worked with before and use an "Easy Setup of Apple Intermediate Codec, 29.97 fps, HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60." I want to add some video footage that I shot with my Canon Rebel t2i. I searched a number of threads and concluded that when working with a project shot with the t2i, I should have the the Easy Setup be "HD, 29.97fps, DVCPRO HD 1080p30" (side question: is this correct?). My question is when starting a project where I will be using footage from both cameras, what Easy Setup should I use and is there anything else I should keep in mind?

Shane-- Thanks for the willingness to help. I am in Helena, but travel all over the state for work--I am a fly fishing and bird hunting guide who likes to do some amateur filming and editing on the side. Love Missoula, Bozeman, Flathead area, etc! And since you are willing to be so helpful, I guess I should start with a go Cats!
I am brand new to FCP, having previously worked a fair amount with FCE4. I actually do have FCP 7 and work with it on my Macbook Pro. My handheld camera is a JVC Everio that captures in AVCHD (1920x1080). I had my Easy Setup in FCE4 as Apple Intermediate Codec. If I use footage from this camera in FCP7, should I continue to do this?
So not only am I new to FCP7, but I just bought the T2i and really am not totally sure what I am doing yet. I just got the Canon EOS Movie Plug-in and modified it according to some threads I read so that it works for the T2i. I also found directions on the Canon website on the proper way to Log and Transfer for T2i footage (side question: can I dump the files off my T2i onto an external HD and then Log and Transfer them into FCP7 from the external, and is there anything I need to know about when doing this?)
So now that you know that I am very knew to FCP7 and the T2i, maybe I should start from scratch. When I log and transfer, what format should I use when I transcode? ProRes 442? And then, however you suggest I should transcode, what should my Easy Setup look like for footage from the T2i?
Wow, if you are still reading at this point, and I haven't exhausted you with all of my questions and naivety, my final question is...once I have become comfortable with importing and editing footage from the T2i, what should I do if I want to log and transfer and then edit footage from both cameras? Do I need to change the Easy Setup? Do I need to make other changes?
Thanks again in advance for all of your help and patience!!!

  • New camcorder- final check before buying

An earlier thread helped me to decide which model to choose. I have settled on a Sony DCR-HC94E. ("E" is for "European".) It is said that FCE is picky about what cameras it will recognise. Therefore, the following are those parts of its spec. which I have detected from this forum as being important to satisfy FCE, and a few other features which suit my requirements. If anyone notices anything inadvisable, please shout. Thanks. Please note that I am not a professional and have not gone for a three-chip machine nor HD, on cost grounds.
    Required by FSE:
Firewire. Actually, Sony’s iLink which is said to be Firewire although it has only 4 pins whereas Apple’s implementation has 6, the added two being for power. Sony tell me that when capturing, their camera must be connected to the mains and the four Firewire pins handle the data without trouble.
However, another point concerns page 15 of FCE’s “Getting Started”, which refers to “Apple Firewire” (the default) and “Apple Firewire Basic”, which “is a simplified device control protocol for camcorders and decks that aren’t compatible with the full Apple Firewire set. Using this protocol doesn’t affect the quality of the captured video or audio.” I am assuming that this is the same point above concerning 4/6 pins and that FCE will be happy if it turns out that the Sony iLink uses “Apple Firewire Basic”. Correct?
And that I will have Device Control?
In Easy Setup, should I select "Firewire Basic"?
The camcorder comes with a driver for the Mac, which provides for capture (presumably Device Control via FCE’s “Capture now” button).
    DV, not MPEG.. whatsit.
miniDV tape cassette, not DVD, Hard Drive nor Solid state.
DV out. No DV in because, as I understand it, DV in is used for archiving video on to miniDV tape and I don’t think I would want that – I plan to archive videos on DVD as QT movies.
Sony say that the DCR-HC94E stripes a digital timecode on to the tape. I believe that FCE needs this.
    Other Features (extract):
The chip is physically 16:9 and all its pixels are used in forming a 16:9 frame. If used in 4:3 mode, the pixels to the left and right are not used. I think that this is True Widescreen and not one of the compromise ways of achieving it by, eg., compression and subsequent expansion.
    3.3 Megapixels “Advanced HAD CCD”.
10 times zoom (I would have liked more, but that’s life).
Manual focus, and full-range auto focus, White Balance (“Auto, Outdoor, Indoor, One-push”).
“Super SteadyShot”. (That is, anti-wobble control.) Electronic.
2.7 inch viewfinder LCD panel, 123,200 pixels
Low light performance - “Min. Illumination = 5 lux”.
    Battery runtime = 2 hours.
    No external mike (pity).
It is remarkably small. “What Digital Camcorder”, issue 77, has a praising review of the next model up (DCR-HC96E), the only difference being that the 96E has DV in.
Thanks for any observations before I plunge into my wallet and let the moths out.

Tom, Martin and Ian:Re. DV in etc. Thanks.
Being an amateur, (and beginner in video editing) my videos will, I think, be family movies; editing a 50-year old 8 mm cine film converted by a video lab to a PAL DVD, which I have nearly finished; and probably making videos of the country district where I live for depositing at the county library for future use, perhaps 100 years from now (if human civilisation survives that long which I doubt); and possibly some simple training videos. I am not planning on making artistic movies.
What I have been doing (so far only with the converted cine) is to edit it, export it as a QT file and use Toast (Roxio) to burn to DVD as the distribution version. (Toast also allows "burning" to a Disc Image, for checking before wasting DVD-Rs). I then check the DVD on a stand-alone DVD player and a domestic TV. I am assuming that all my efforts will likely follow that route.
    Tom (and others) said:
"You want DV in. It lets you record your finished movie back to tape."
But why would I want to do that? Archiving? But is minDV tape so long-lasting? DVDs may not last more than 20 years and will need refreshing (re-recording on current media) which decendants won't do but that's another story. To view and check the finished video? But wouldn't my method (QT, DVD player, TV, described above) do that for me? To dub from a TV broadcast or to transfer to VCR tape via A/V? I have a combo VCR/DVD set-top video recorder which can do both of those (in the second case by dubbing from the above-mantioned distribution DVD).And VCR tape is on the way out, at least in the UK (Dixons no longer sell tape or tape-based VCRs) but of course peoples' tape VCRs will remain working for, say, 10 years.
On the lack of an external mike, its a budget thing. Sony Centre said that the only detectable camera noise would be if the ambient sound was very low and as a result the gain was increased. But hopefully I could add a suitable ambient audio track as a sound bed (Tom's book, page 132) to drown it - music, general ambient, sheep.
I'm probably wrong, but not too proud to be corrected.
Meteorites, hmmm... As a pessiminst, they worry me, but hopefully I will be dead before one strikes!

  • Address Book Sharing

Is it at all possible to share parts of my address book but not the hole darn thing? Not sure if this really needs to be in feedback or if I am missing something.
My address book covers everything from family, several groups of friends, financial companies, software companies, health related companies, work venders, co-workers, past job references and several different mail lists participants. As you can see I have many aspects of my life that should not be viewed by all other aspects of my life.
Simply, how can I share the "Family" group of my address book with my family to edit and put their current or updated information?

Unfortunately the Address Book sharing feature for both Tiger and Leopard only works on an all-or-nothing basis.

  • New hard drive in a Mac Pro - my experience.

After taking delivery of my MacPro I was keen to add an extra hard drive to use in conjunction with amateur level video editing and photo imaging software.
At first I bought a 3.0 Gb/s, 320 GB Seagate 7200.10. and it worked Ok but did not seem any faster than the OEM drive (250 GB Western Digital SE) . XBench confirmed that it was in fact 20% slower overall.
I then consulted this forum and read the many posts re the Seagate firmware problem and other suggestions for suitable hard drives. To be honest it was all great stuff but, for me, a little overwhelming. So today, back went the Seagate in exchange for a 3.0 Gb/s, 250 GB, Maxtor Diamond Max 10 which was all I could afford. I installed the drive, what a dream the MacPro is, partioned it and ran XBench. The Maxtor is 2.5 to 3 times faster than the Seagate and is a quiet drive.
So if you, like me, want a single, affordable fast and quiet drive, the Maxtor does the job. I am sure other drives are just as good if not better but if you find the research confusing, the Maxtor seems to be a safe choice.
Also, congratulations for reading this forum before making a purchase - it saves you the 20% restocking fee for returns!

I want to install another hard drive in my Mac Pro. Just looking for something in the 250GB or smaller range - Western Dig. Maxtor, etc.
I see plenty of SATA 3Gbs drives - what do I look for in terms of specs. The dimensions are listed in the Mac Pro booklet, however, what type of connector is needed or not needed - seems no cables are needed... how many pins, etc.????
    Appreciate any help.

  • Problem with leopard DVD loading in PowerPC G4

Hi having problems installing Leopard DVD on Mac G4 desk top - 1GHz PowerPC G4 (3,6), 1MB L3 Cache, 768 MB Ram.
    A few of the details:
    1) I have installed Leopard on my Laptop and it is running fine and it is a family pack edition DVD.
    2) I wiped the G4 I am trying to install clean and re-loaded the original system software, then loaded to Tiger to see if that was the issue...When I put in the Leopard DVD it doesn't even show as being in the computer. It doesn't come up on the desk top...it doesn't show in the HD...it doesn't make a sound at all when put in the DVD slot...basically, the computer is not recognizing the DVD. I have tried other cd's and DVD's in the drive....everything is working except the Leopard DVD.
    Any ideas?

    Hi TK333;
Where did you get the Leopard DVD? Did you buy it or did it come with another Mac?

Hi Allan. He said it was a Family Pack DVD.

What happens if the user isn't reading the message in a HTML enabled mail client?
Besides, even if you don't want to send an equivelant message in plain text, at least say something like 'Please open the message in an HTML enabled mail client'.
It is a required field, so requires some value (not null).
    From the docs:
Plain text and HTML email content. Passing a value to p_body, but not p_body_html results in a plain text message. Passing a value to p_body and p_body_html yields a multi-part message that includes both plain text and HTML content. The settings and capabilities of the recipient's email client determine what displays. Although most modern email clients can read an HTML formatted email, remember that some users disable this functionality to address security issues.
