Amateur question on color

I'm printing to a Canon iP6700D (very nice for a very cheap printer). Canon gives ICC profiles cryptic names, but I'm sure the "Canon iP6700D SP2" profile is the most appropriate one for the various Premium/Premium Plus glossy photo papers I use.
The difference between Onscreen Proofing on and off is clear, and the same difference is visible in the print dialog's large preview, when I switch between System Managed and the Canon profile. So far so logical.
The trouble is, I don't like it: too light and washed out. Choosing System Managed in the print dialog gives a result more like what the image on-screen (with Proofing off) makes me expect, and more like what I want.
My question is this: Aside from the obvious answer (print whichever way looks better), what am I missing when I don't use the profile (or some profile) in Proofing and in printing?

Thanks. I understand I need to manage color either in Aperture or in the printer but not both. In the Canon print-driver dialog there are two tabs with relevant settings. In the "ColorSync" tab there's only one option, "Standard" ("In Printer" is grayed out). In the "Color Correction" tab, I choose "None" rather than "ColorSync" or "Driver Matching." As far as I can tell, I'm making the right choices whether I'm using "System Managed" in Aperture or choosing an ICC Profile in Aperture's print dialog. Is that right, or should I be using a different "Color Correction" setting?
But in any case, my main problem isn't coordinating the application and the printer. If I print with the appropriate (I think!) ICC Profile, the print does pretty well match what Onscreen Proofing shows me -- but both the onscreen image and the print are too light, washed out. I get better results if I switch to System Managed when I print, better both on paper and onscreen (with Onscreen Proofing is unchecked).
In other words, I don't like the ICC Profile's results, anywhere. I've tried all the Canon profiles I have. Eight of the nine give the same washed-out result. The one that seems most generic, "Canon IJ Color Printer Profile 2005" (all the others contain my printer's exact model number), looks much better -- but it looks exactly the same as if I weren't using any profile. If I choose it for Proofing Profile, checking and unchecking Onscreen Proofing makes no visible difference at all.
So should I just give up on profiles and use System Managed?

  • Question About Color's and Gradients

    Hi all,
    I have a question about color swatches and gradients.
    I am curious to know, if I have 2 color swatches that I make into a gradient color, is it posible to change the tint of each indivdual color in that gradient and have that applied to the gradient without having to adjust the gradients opacity.
    The reason that I'm asking this is because in creating a project I found that the colors that I chose for to make my gradient from my swatches were to dark, and while I can adjust each one's tint to my liking (if the object they were applied to was going to be a solid color) but that doesn't seem to apply to the overall gradient.
    I hope that makes sense, I know that this was something that was able to be accomplished in quark and was wondering if I can do something similar.

    If you double click your gradient swatch (after adding it to the swatches)
    Then click a colour stop in the gradient, and then change the drop down menu to CMYK (or rgb)
    And you can alter the percentages there. It's not much use for spot colours but it's a start.
    But making tint swatches would be a good start anyway.
    At least then when you double click the gradient (in the swatches) to edit it you can choose from CMYK, RGB, LAB, or Swatches and adjust each colour stop to your liking.

  • Randomized Colors are Too Dark. Questions on Color Boxes

    Hey all,
    I am attempting to change the color of the plots on a mixed signal
    graph remotely using the "color box" control which works fine; however, I
    am also setting the color boxes to a random color when the program
    first starts up which is where my problem lies.
    What I currently am doing is that I have a random number generator
    pumping out a number after which I multiply the number by 10000000, just
    to give me some colors brighter than black, and then I have that wired up to
    the color box control I am setting the random color on. The problem with
    this is that although it does produce some decent colors some of the
    colors produced are quite dark and pretty hard to see on the mixed
    signal graph.
    I could make the graph background a different color if I have to in
    order to see a majority of the colors that come out, but I would much
    rather just have the colors come out more on the bright and colorful
    side.
    So I have two questions for you guys and gals:
    1) How do the colors of the colorbox get determined using the unsigned 32 int?
    One such example of why I am confused is that the number that I have
    going in is 5726420 from the random number generator (+ being
    multiplied), but on the colorbox control the RGB value is R:87 G:96
    B:212. Why is that?
    2) Is there any kind of algorithm out there that someone has done
    that can produce values randomly that will give kind of neony colors? or
    anything semi-bright for that matter?
    Any help is very much appreciated!

  • Questions on colors

    I have a few questions:
    1) Can you create a gradient color fill for text? If so, how?
    2) How do you save a color for later use?
    3) Trying to make my text "glow" by keyframing the color from a gold to a near white back to a gold, etc. When I have the text selected and change color - it is accurate. But when I have a keyframe inserted and then change the color, it is not. It looks as if the color is a blend of my new color and the original one. What can I do to create that effect?
    thanks!

    1. Yes, but it's not as easy as you might think. Look up mattes in the Livetype docos, too complex to explain here.
    2. Add it to the Macintosh color picker system palette.
    3. You need to adjust the color slide in the Attributes panel. Umm, sorry, I'm not at my LT machine right now to tell you where it is precisely located.
    Have you forced yourself to slog through the LT tutorials? There are also several articles on LT at kenstone.net.

  • Question re: colors mismatching in two different documents

    Hey all,
    I use Photoshop (CS2) primarily for coloring illustrations and comics, and although I'm not quite a technophobe, I still always get tripped up on the technicalities of the program. Here's my problem in a nutshell: I have two different documents, both with the same color profile (Adobe RGB 1998), both open at the same time. I use the eyedropper to select a color. I switch from one document to the other, and the color as it's displayed changes rather dramatically (even though the color picker says it's still the same - 190R, 120G, 120B). The shift in how the color is displayed is consistent even if I change it using the picker or eyedropper - which is to say that the display error is consistently wonky from one document to the other.
    What in the world is causing this? The saturation and brightness are quite different from one document to the other, to the point where it's immediately noticeable to the naked eye. This only happens with certain docs - in most cases, the color remains consistent from one doc to the other if I have multiple docs open, but it just goes wonky when I move over to certain docs. I've had this problem before, with colors displaying differently as jpegs, for example, than as tiffs in Photoshop, but that's obviously a correctable issue involving color profiles. I find it really frustrating that this is something that's happening from one tiff to another in the Photoshop work environment. Can anybody help me with this?

    There's just no way this can happen if the two document profiles are really and truly the same. If, on the other hand, the profiles are not the same, this is normal and expected. The numbers will be different for the same color (and inverse).
    Check again. Click the little arrow at the bottom of the document frame:
    Also make sure that you have Color Management Policies set to "Preserve Embedded Profiles" (which is also the default setting). Any other setting is an unholy mess waiting to happen, unless you really know what you're doing.

  • CS3/4, JS Amateur question: how remove all empty text frames?

    I'm an amateur, and thought it would be a straightforward matter to write a script that simply deletes all empty text frames in all of a document's stories. Here's my second attempt:
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
    var myStories = myDocument.stories;
    for (i = 0; i < myStories.length; i++){
      var myStory = myStories[i];
      var myTextFrames = myStory.textContainers;
        for (j = myTextFrames.length - 1; j >=0; j--) {
        if (myTextFrames[j].contents == "") myTextFrames[j].remove();
    The trouble is, sometimes it works as intended, but sometimes, with multiple stories, it needs to be run more than once. Can anyone explain why that is?

    AHA! -- This is a great help. It was driving me up the wall, and I don't know why it didn't work for me last night. Maybe it's because I was counting through stories in the wrong direction. Anyhow, I see how it works now, and I'm very grateful for the help.
    By the way Harbs, I used all three of your suggestions because I had spent far too much time tapping away at that nut with my little toy hammer. I vented my frustration by using all three of your sledgehammers. In particular, I made sure it left a single empty text frame where it was, as such a frame might be used as a graphic. (Although in the past, I've found an empty story can be a sneaky place for a rogue font to hide. The insertion point just in front of the "end of story" character can have a paragraph style applied, with its associated font, but "Find" won't find any characters with that paragraph style or font applied!)

  • Amateur question reagarding quality of video formats

    Since iMovie '08 came out, I switched to FCE, to get into the program, before support for iMovie 06 HD disappears completely,
    Now with the discussion of the future of FW on Apple's non pro machine, I do have the following question, which is not immenent to me right now, but would regard possible future investment in a new Videocamera and / or computer:
    Presently I am using a DV based camera, occastionally having used HDV. Should Apple pursue the path of dropping firewire on some of their machines, I may have to consider getting a USB based camera for replacement (my current camera is close to four years old, so that perspective isn't too far).
    Now, from what I learned, DV and HDV are not availalbe for USB, so in how do the codecs used with USB cameras compare to the DV and HDV formats. By this, I mean a comparison on the basis of picture and sound quality, only. And please, I do not intend this question for a discussion of pro/con firewire /usb or pro/con harddrive vs. tape. Just plainly a question and some advice of the quality of the footage I get on my computer.
    Thx for any advice!
    Dirk

    DV and HDV use the MPEG2 compression standard to store video.
    USB cameras use the newer AVCHD model which uses MPEG-4 Part 10 (also known as AVC also known as h.264)
    h.264 was intended to get more data packed into the same bitrate thus giving higher quality. The idea being the 24 Mbps h.264 would be superior to 24 Mbps MPEG2. While in general this is held to be true, how much better is greatly debated.
    My limited experience says that image quality depends far more on the equipment itself rather than the codec. If your camera has good optics and focuses well, your image quality will be better, regardless of which codec you use. I opted for an AVCHD camera when I purchased mine more because of size (it stores to flash cards) more than anything else.

  • Question on Color Correction / gamma

    I'm correcting footage shot with a "flat" camera style. When I correct the footage using SA Color Finesse in AE, I feel like I'm pretty clear on using the HSL controls - except for gamma. My goal is to set Pedestal to crush the blacks a bit around 0 and Gain to bring the brightest white point toward 100. But Gamma is throwing me and making my footage look inconsistent I think. Is there a proper way to work with these controls? What if you have footage where there's no real black or white? Thanks!

    [Sorry for the slow response. The flu hit Synthetic Aperture Global HQ hard.]
    I wouldn't use the automatic color match tool to try to correct a problem in the extreme highlights (white). Because white (or near white) is so far to one extreme, automated color matching tends to make changes which aren't right for the rests of the image.
    If the problem is one of overall incorrect color balance, try the Auto Color tool instead. In the full UI it's located in the Levels tab, in the lower-right corner. The Auto Color button is also available in the simplified interface within AE. (Like all auto color tools, it can sometimes be fooled and be spectacularly wrong.)
    If the problem is one of contaminated whites while the rest of the image has a proper color balance, my approach would be to sample the white with the eyedropper. Note the readings on the individual color channels. For a neutral white all of the color channels whould have equal values. You'll need to adjust the RGB channels to accomplish that. Select the RGB tab, then the Highlights tab. Now use the Red, Green, and Blue Gain controls to balance the color channels to be equal.

  • Possible Noob Question: Correcting Colors From Cheap Digital Camera

    I'm somewhat embarrassed to ask this here, but ya gotta start some place.
    I'm a web dev so forgive my ignorance. I work with photos a lot, but they've always come to me from people who know what they're doing. I don't really understand digital -photography- that well---which is quite different I realise than film.
    Anyhoo, I'm trying to get better colors from a  pocket digital camera (Canon Elf 310) which (supposedly) has 12MP. The pictures I want to take for the job I have in mind involve clouds and landscapes and I gotta take a pocket came because we're camping/fishing.
    Anyway, they -could- be very cool but the tests I've done show that the colors are going to be just -wrong-. And by 'wrong' I mean everything either seems -under- saturated or hyper-statured. For example... the subtle pinks in clouds are rendered as washed out or will be overly contrasty (hyper) yellow to orange.
    The detail is quite sharp, however so does that mean there's something 'there' there which can be properly corrected? And if so, how?
    If it's too wordy, perhaps maybe someone can just recommend a good text on the subject?
    TIA,
    ---JC

    I completely agree with Mylenium.
    Beyond working with the various Tools in PS, for "Color Correction," I would start with a properly calibrated monitor, so that you know that what you are "correcting," is the Image, and not the monitor.
    Next, familiarization with those Tools, such as Hue/Saturation, will be very useful. The Help file can get you started, by defining what each Tool can do, and a short-course on how it does it.
    I would always work with non-destructive techniques, so that one can always go back and re-edit things. For that Hue/Saturation, mentioned above, I would use a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. Same for Color Balance, and the rest.
    Last, you eye should be your guide, on that calibrated monitor. Adjust, until you get what YOU like (or what your client likes). Remember that by default, most of those "corrections" will be "global" for the Image, BUT with Layer Masks, you can restrict/constrain the corrections to just certain areas of that Image. At that point, knowing about the various Masking techniques will be very helpful. Besides the Help file, there are many useful tutorials on various Masking techniques, and many will apply to Layer Masks.
    Also be aware that different camera sensors might bias differently, and also with lower-resolution Images, you will likely not have a great deal of Dynamic Range to work with. Start with the best possible, from your camera. If possible, shoot in Camera RAW, and use the "processing" power of ACR (Adobe Camera RAW), to get started. You should be able to create a Preset for your camera (maybe shoot a McBeth Color Checker card, and calibrate that), to get that processing started.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Simple Question Alternate color for Interactive form

    I can easily change the alternate color in rows for tabular but not interactive,
    can someone show me how.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    At the moment, I don't think that's possible - see: Interactive report template
    You can get the alternating colours when the page is first loaded (the above link has an example of doing that), but when you use the pagination functionality, the colours are lost.

  • Question: sRGB color space profile icm

    I am trying to convert a file to color space sRGB color space profile.icm. The profile is located in my library on my hard drive under recommended profiles but it does not appear in the drop down menu under edit/convert to profile. Any ideas about why? I have performed this task on my MAC  at my college but can't seem to do it on my MAC in my studio...

    LR converts them to the colorspace specified on the Export panel.  There are several choices, including sRGB.  You may need to expand various sections to see the option.

  • Beginner question: retaining color on a portion of a photo

    I know this is a reletively easy function in Photoshop, but I wondered if it is possible in Lightroom to reduce color saturation to zero in only selected portions of a photo.  For example, to have a black and white portrait with blue eyes.
    Is this possible?  Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • Spry Menu question #2: colors

    Hi again...

    Have you read the comments within the css file - if you go
