AMAVIS blocking outgoing SMTP despite main.cf settings

My mail server, which has been running without issues for years, suddenly started silently dropping outgoing emails sent from my personal account. After some digging I have found that my outgoing mail is being tagged as spam and being silently dropped without being sent. The emails are being tagged as spam because my home dynamic IP is listed in SORBS DUL.
Here is an example line from my amavis.log file:
Oct 19 09:29:13 Server.local /usr/bin/amavisd[1181]: (01181-05) SPAM, <[email protected]> -> <[email protected]>, Yes, hits=6.722 tag=-999 tag2=5 kill=5 tests=ALL_TRUSTED, AWL, BAYES_50, DNSFROM_RFCWHOIS, RCVDIN_SORBSDUL, quarantine spam-3a4766c00e2107263ba8c8adadbba3c3-20071019-092909-01181-05 (spam-quarantine)
This has never been a problem for me before, and I assumed I was safe from this issue because I have the following lines in my main.cf file:
smtpdclientrestrictions = permitsaslauthenticated permit_mynetworks permitsaslauthenticated permit
smtpdrecipientrestrictions = permitsasl_authenticated,permit_mynetworks,reject_unauthdestination,permit
My server is set to reject any outgoing mail unless you log in with a valid username and password, and I have double checked that I am authenticating for outgoing SMTP in Entourage.
Can anyone help me understand why spam checks are taking place when these settings are place as well as how to resolve this issue?
Thanks!

Your main.cf settings only tell Postfix to avoid any further checks on authenticated users and accept mail into the queue. The content filter (amavisd) on OS X Server is configured to be a "post-queue" service. As such amavisd will examine any mail being passed on from the postfix queue.
There are many ways to prevent this. The simplest being the use of an additional submission port for authenticated users which makes no use of content filtering at all.

  • Mac Mail Outgoing SMTP Settings for Exchange account

I can't seem to get my Mac Mail client outgoing smtp settings correct. I am receiving fine but cannot send. My companies IT person does not have any Mac experience and has asked that I use webmail. Please help.

Thank you sooo much for getting back to me. I am back to trying to figure this out.
I have tried to set it up with the mentioned settings without success.
I think the problem is with the Outgoing Mail Server address that was given to me by the IT person - "webmail.outdoordimensions.com".
Typically, when setting accounts up, I have used an address respective to the web access provider - i.e. "smtp.att.yahoo.com". However, this "Exchange" account is something very new to me.
Thanks again for your help. Also what is "TLS-wrapped"? I didn't find a setting option for this.

  • Mail refuses to acknowledge the real outgoing SMTP settings - no work mail

I am having trouble sending mail from my work email.
When I press "send" I get the message that I cannot send the message due to "SMTP authentication turned on in your email client".
My mail preferences clearly state that I have NOT turned on outgoing smtp authentication.
When I then open the message in the Outbox I cannot send it until I've manually pressed "Get mail" and then try to send it again.
    - Do you know how to make it work again, or why Mail behaves this way?
Other notes: I can use the same address without problems on a PC and cell phone.
I recently changed from checking for new mail every 5 minutes to checking manually.

It looks like this outgoing server uses a form of authentication known as “POP before SMTP” or “SMTP after POP”:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POPbeforeSMTP
The way to set up that outgoing server in Mail would be setting Authentication to None in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, and either telling Mail to regularly check for new mail in Preferences > General (e.g. every 5 or 15 minutes), or manually checking for new mail before sending.
If that outgoing server works that way and you’ve stopped checking for mail regularly then, well, it should be no surprise that you have to check for new mail manually in order to be able to send...

  • Setting up a mail client and the outgoing SMTP set...

If you switch to BT and you already have email accounts set up in a mail client such as Mac Mail, you will not find any help from BT to set up correct outgoing SMTP mail server settings. Most other ISP's are usually very helpful with this but BT have a policy that is designed to make things very difficult to use anything but a BT email account. They claim that it is "To protect our email server from abuse by spammers". However, the solution to this has potentially quite the opposite effect as you will not be able to enable SSL for it to work!!
OK so the first thing to do is create a new 'MY BT' account and then go to 'email' and create a new BT email account. Keep a note of address and password as you will need this later.
Go back to the main BT home page and click on mail. You should land on a page that has the new 'BT Mail Account' in the left column and above a purple tool bar with 'Settings at the end. Click on 'Settings'.
In the left column, underneath 'Mail' click on 'Accounts'
Click 'Add' and fill in the details of your 3rd party (Non BT) account. They encourage IMAP only but I used 'POP" with no problems as I have no intention of using the BT mail client.
In 'Mail settings' fill out the mail server details from your email provider or where your site is actually hosted. For example if you are using 000webhost.com then they will advise 'mx.000webhost.com' or may be 'mail.yourwebsitename'
The correct port to enter is the port listed in your web client. For me with Mac Mail then this is listed in preferences and if you check this then also double check that use SSL is NOT checked
Enter the email user name and password of your 3rd party account
Make sure in 'Security' that 'Requires SSL' is NOT checked
    Then save the account
Click on the 'Email' link in the purple tool bar and there now under the 'BT Mail Account' should be your 3rd party account. Click on it and it should now load your email. If it doesn't then you will have to try again the steps above as there is no point in going any further if the BT client cannot access your account.
OK if it is working then go to your email client (Mac Mail in my case) and in preference set up your 3rd party account as follows.
Incoming mail server is as the info from your host ( like as in 'mx.000webhost.com' above). Enter user name and password for the 3rd party account.
Now set up an Outgoing mail server (SMPT). I just called it BT with the server name 'mail.btinternet.com'. In the advance section click use default ports. It actually uses 465 if you do not have a default option.
    Do NOT enable SSL
    Set Authentication to 'Password'
Then in user name enter the details of the NEW BT account you opened for user name and password.
And that's it. Well it works for me! I got no assistance whatsoever from BT in trying to solve this. I asked to cancel my new BT infinity service after only 5 days when it proved so difficult to get an email client like mac mail to work. I had 4 calls from them and even the 'Tech Experts' had no idea what I was talking to them about!

    Melski wrote:
Ah yes Thank you Oliver that is a better solution. However all the settings in the BT client have to remain as no SSL. If you change to use SSL there you will not be able access the 3rd party email account.
Your email client cannot handle SSL for SMTP (BT) and non-SSL for POP3 (000webhost)?
    Oliver.

  • How do you delete outgoing (SMTP) servers???

Due to the fact many SMTP servers require you to be on their network to login, I have at varioius times set up 3 different SMTP servers in the mail app setup. The mail app never forgets them once you set them up. It even remembers multiple copies of the same SMTP server where I just tried different settings/passwords. The mail app adds all these SMTP accounts (I now have 7 including "other SMTP servers") when I only set up one after deleting the account and starting over. Worse yet, these 7 represent only 3 unique servers and when it's trying to test the outgoing (SMTP) server at setup, it takes forever while it tests all 7 apparently.
Deleting mail account doesn't get rid of these SMPT servers. Resetting iPhone doesn't work because it restores them from from backup in iTunes. There should be some way to get mail app to forget every server/name/password combination you have ever entered when trying to get connected to an outgoing server.
Lest anyone think this is unecessary, keep in mind you can't send from home via cmwx server if you get bad cell coverage. You can't send away from home if you are off your home network, and you can't send from a hotel room with wi-fi access if you have no cell coverage. I fianlly set up a mail account that can be connected to from anywhere, but now I can't get rid of all the rest!

Seems that the only way to clear them out would be to perform a Restore in iTunes and set up as a new phone (not from backup). Note that this is also the only way to clear out the email address autofill list (and that one affects a lot more people than the SMTP server list, I'm sure).
You can submit feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html.

  • Cannot edit outgoing SMTP server list in mail.app

Did a fresh install of Snow Leopard on a new 13" Macbook Pro unibody and was trying to add an IMAP email account. After failing to connect, I was trying to specify the outgoing port and realized that I could not edit the outgoing SMTP server list.
    Steps to reproduce error:
    1. Open mail.app
    2. Go to Mail > Preferences
    3. Select "Accounts" tab and select any mail account
    4. Select "Account Information" tab and click Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) drop down menu
    5. Select "Edit SMTP Server List..."
After that point the instead of opening the list of servers with their settings, it simply returns to the "Account Information" screen. I'm a bit confused because I've never had this happen before in any other version of mail app. I cannot edit or delete any outgoing mail server accounts because of this. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.

This should not happen. Had you migrated back to the fresh install the Mail folder in User-Library? Or is this a clean setup? I would go to User-Library-Preferences, and drag the com.apple.mail.plist to the trash, then open Mail and try again.

  • Outgoing smtp problem in Mail

My outgoing smtp server in Mail Account Information is shown as "offline" and I can't send emails.  Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem and what the smtp should read or be inserted as?  Thanks.

    EDIT SMTP SETTINGS
In Accounts window, select to Edit SMTP Server list...
Select account in the list.(It's not uncommon to find extra SMTP servers listed. When you remove account, Mail does not delete the smtp info. You might need to do some clean up in the list to remove the extras.)
Click on Advanced tab. Enter full email address and password
    Name. [email protected]
Add password if it is blank.
Apple defaults to the default ports (25,465, 587) but some servers prefer a custom port. Check to see what port they recommend. Gmail for example likes 465, Outlook.com 587. Verify if they require SSL.
Open Connection Doctor under Window in the Menu bar.
Do you see green light now for your account?

  • Outgoing SMTP Unresponsive

I am having problems with configuring my wife's email account on her eMac. She is running Tiger. This is the full story:
I created 3 email addresses on her web hosting account:
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
I set up [email protected] on my eMac in Mail and it works perfectly. both ingoing and outgoing.
The problem I had today was when I was at Paula's office and tried to set up [email protected] on her office computer. It is also an eMac running OS 10.4.3 it accepted the info for incoming server but outgoing just brings up an error message 'outgoing smtp server not responding' I am not familiar with Tiger and this is the first time Mail has been used. It brings up a set up box. It does not allow me to enter or check that it is using port 25
I presume there is a preference somewhere that needs changing.
Any suggestions. Assume a minimum of computer savvy and zero knowledge of Tiger.
    Thanks

  • Outgoing SMTP Authentication Method Problem (functional option, require signin, not available)

    Hello all,
I'm trying to set up an account on my Thunderbird and I'm having a weird problem. I can receive emails on it fine but I cannot send any emails. Whenever I try to send any emails I get the error message "Syntactically invalid EHLO argument(s)".
This email address that I'm trying to add as an account on Thunderbird works perfectly fine in my Gmail Android app on my phone. The difference in the Outgoing SMTP settings are that on my (working) gmail app the Security Type = NONE and the "Require signin" box is CHECKED, whereas in Thunderbird I can set my Outgoing SMTP Security Type setting to = NONE but I do not have the option to "Require signin". All of the options that are available do not work.
    Is there any solution?
    Thank you!
    Best, Nick

Hi Toad-Hall, thanks for offering to help. Here's the text below. Please let me know if you think this could be a Thunderbird issue, or more likely with my host...

  • TS3276 Outgoing smtp server 'offline'

My outgoing smtp server is correctly configured yet shows as 'offline'. How can I put it online?
    Thank u.

Assume you've solved the problem yourself or it corrected itself but if not try going into your mail preferences and the account settings.  For each account you can edit the outgoing SMTP server list.  Go into the advanced settings for the account showing offline.  Even if there is a password stored, retype the account password and click OK.  The account should go back online.

  • How do I set outgoing smtp port for mail program ?

How do I set a port for the outgoing mail server (smtp)? If you go to
    SETTINGS \ <email account> \ ADVANCED
you can only associate a port with the INCOMING SETTINGS. I need to associate a port with the Outgoing Server. How do I do this?

Tap on the outgoing smtp server under Settings>Mail,Contacts, Calendars and your email account. You will then see the advanced settings for the outgoing smtp server.

  • Is there a generic outgoing smtp setting for mail?

I use four mail accounts, one @Mac.com and three for websites I manage. I use my laptop in a variety of locations, most of which I know the outgoing SMTP settings. But, in some locations, like the one I'm at right now, I don't know and therefore can't reply to my incoming mail from my Mail application.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
One of the advantages to a .Mac account, is its Authenticated SMTP, which can be used at most (but not all) remote locations. The same is true of a Gmail account and its SMTP. When the SMTP provided by your ISP to your home venue is separately authenticated, rather than by some reliance on the IP address of the modem, or by some reference method to the Incoming server, then that Authenticated SMTP can normally be used.
With the smtp.mac.com you can only send from the .mac address. With the Gmail SMTP you can normally send with any address as the From address. Depending on the ISP, their Authenticated SMPT (if one is provided) there might be some restriction as to From address, but this would likely be the same as when at home.
However, the provider of internet service at any location can always choose to restrict the use of any third party SMTP, to limit their exposure to those who would use their connection to SPAM. Thus, every location can be different, and this is where webmail access may be critical.
    More info, please.

  • STARTTLS outgoing SMTP

    Hi,
I'm just setting up Leopard Server as a trial for a client. I'm trying to setup outgoing SMTP mail however i'm using SKY broadband and all their IP addresses are blacklisted. I want to use SKY's SMTP relays which are offered by googlemail.
When connecting though they require TLS and I can't for the life of me figure out how to enable STARTTLS to be sent when connecting. I've tried a lot of different settings and none of them have worked.
    Any ideas?
    Rgds

    Hello,
I experienced the exact same problem when I switched to Google apps using a gmail vanity domain.  I did everything in my power to try and resolve this issue, but I could not fix it by myself.  I eventually had to call Nokia customer support and they were able to correct the issue in the system.  Give them a call and they should be able to fix it for you.
