Ambient light no longer works

Hello, first the background: I have a late 2006 Core 2 Duo iMac. It's been operating beautifully since its purchase, and everything is in perfect working order. Except one thing.
My ambient light sensor no longer seems to work properly. The white LED that goes on either when the display is off or the computer is in Sleep mode is at full brightness all the time.
When the computer is in Sleep mode, normally it's supposed to sense how much light is in the surrounding area and adjust accordingly, but now it pulsates at full brightness no matter how dark my room is. And when the display turns off, the light is at full brightness no matter what the darkness.
It has been this way since I installed the Developer Tools from the retail Mac OS X Tiger disk instead of the disks that came with my iMac. When I removed the Developer Tools I noticed that the sleep light wasn't functioning properly.
I did a Apple Hardware test, which came back error-free. I have no hacks on my machine at all. So the only thing I can think of that did it was my blunder with the Developer Tools.
Any ideas as to how to correct this? Thank you.

Unless you have a lot of 3rd party hacks and stuff in Mac OS X on your iMac, there isn't much to an Archive & Install, except the time for the Installer to do its job. Then you drag the Previous System to the Trash and flush and you are on your way. I would remove the Developer Tools first.
The issue with the Retail disk for Tiger is that it isn't Universal binary, it's all PowerPC. The Mac OS X Installer on my Retail disk won't even run on my iMac Intel. I was surprised to see that it does let you install the Developer Tools!

My text notification light no longer works now since the Lollipop upgrade.  How do I get it back since i use my phone in silent mode most of the time?

We want you to love your software update pitbullmommy71! When did you update your phone? Have you tried going into phone settings and set up your notifications as you would like them? It can take a few days for your phone to normalize after the update, but this may be a bit much. Some apps may no longer be compatible with the new software so you can try running phone in Safe Mode or do a Hard Reset to see if this improves your phone. I've seen where some have completed a Hard Reset after the update and downloaded all same apps, and phone works flawlessly now. However, if you'd like to try Safe Mode first, (which is where all 3rd party apps are disabled), you can certainly try this for 24 hours to see if improves.

  • Toshiba - A665-S5170: ambient light sensor not working after recovery

    Hi all,
Two weeks ago I bought Toshiba - Satellite Laptop Model: A665-S5170 | SKU: 1859059
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Satellite+Laptop+/skuId=1859059
I tried to resize the C: partition using the recovery option. It works fine ending with C: partition (100 GB) and D: partition (480GB)
All the divers and applications restored fine except the ambient light sensor.
I used system recovery to out-of-box state, but still have the same problem "ambient light sensor not working".
Would you please help me find a solution?
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem. I tried resetting SMC but that didn't do the trick. Then I tried “Repair disc permissions“ and that fixed the problem.

  • Ambient Light Sensor Not Working Macbook Pro 13 inch early 2011 version

Hi. I just need some clarification on how the ambient light sensor works. it seems mine is not working. Correct me if I'm wrong:
    1. Screen light must increase brightness if you are in a dark / dim room
    2. Screen light must decrease brightness if there is natural light
What must be the level of light in F2? Should it just be in the middle to activate ALS?
    Am I correct or not?

    1. Screen light must increase brightness if you are in a dark / dim room
    2. Screen light must decrease brightness if there is natural light
Actually, you are wrong. The opposite of each statement is true.
If the screen adjusted itself to maximum brightness in a very dark room, it would be blinding. In a dark room, you only need a very dim backlight to be able to see the screen well.
And in bright light, the screen is quite hard to read unless it is very bright.
What must be the level of light in F2? Should it just be in the middle to activate ALS?
I'm sorry, but I don't understand these questions.
The ALS is always active. You can determine (in System Preferences) whether or not it will automatically adjust your keyboard and display backlights as ambient light levels change.

  • Apple iPod Touch  2G Ambient Light Sensor not working!

Now I have a iPod Touch 2nd Generation which I was given for Cristmas 2009 and was really pleased with it and it has only been now that I have
Noticed that the ambient light sensor soposedly built in does not seem to work!  It is on in the settings and other people have said that it only senses when it is woken but it does not even do it then!
P.S. I do have a transparent screen protector on it although this should not affect it!

  • IPod Touch ambient light sensor not working?

Ok, I have an iPod Touch and everything works fine except for auto brightness. Whenever I cover up the light sensor nothing happens, the screen doesn't get lighter or darker...it just stays the same for some reason. The only way I can get auto brightness to work is if I put the iPod Touch into sleep mode and cut it back on again, then it seems to work. Does anyone else have this problem? Also, try covering up the sensor and see if the brightness changes at all, if you can. I have a feeling that my iPod may be defected.

  • M640 ambient light sensor not working

The ambient light sensor on my M640-BT2N23 laptop is apparently not functioning, if it exists at all (the laptop's specs say it's there.) Whether I'm looking at the screen in a dark room or a brightly-lit room, the display intensity does not seem to change at all to compensate.
When I check Windows 7's Location and Other Sensors control panel, it says that no sensors are installed.
    1) Does my computer include the ambient light sensor?
    2) If so, is there a way to activate it?
    3) If so, is it worth the effort?
    Michael

In the iPad, open the Settings app and drag the brightness slider to 50%.  While 'Brightness and Wallpaper' still open, go to a bright source of light (window, lamp, etc.) and see if it changes; now go to a dark room and see if the button starts to slide to the left (very slowly; really, now it's very slow).  Put the iPad to sleep (Still on brightness and wallpaper) and then wake it up again and see if the position of the slidebar changes.  Remember that now the ALS behavior has changed and now it works like in OS X.
If you don't see any changes, then it would be time to consider a restore of the iOS via iTunes:

  • Caps lock light no longer works since upgrade

Mavericks appears to work just fine but... the caps lock light no longer functions on my mid 2012 MBP sine I installed Mavericks. Any had the same issue?

The caps lock light is entirely hardware-controlled, so you probably have a minor hardware issue with the keyboard. Any correlation with instaling Mavericks is purely coincidental.

  • Equium L40-17M: WLan connection working but light no longer works

I have recently transferred my laptop Equium L40 17M... from Vista to Windows 7 64 Bit and since then my WiFi Light has not worked --- any ideas????
    HELP!

    Hi
I assume you are not able to enable the WLan and therefore the WLan does not work in Win 7.
First of all you should ensure that WLan card driver was installed properly and that WLan card was recognized in device manager.
No yellow exclamation marks should be visible in Network adapters.
Here a page with WLan drivers:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/wlan/?page=downloads
I think your notebook support REALTEK 802.11(B/G) RTL8187B WLan card so you have to choose Realtek WLan driver.
    Furthermore you have to ensure that WLan was enabled;
You have to put the WLan switch to ON position in order to enable WLan LED light
Additionally you have to use FN + F8 buttons to choose WLan card.
If Fn buttons would not work, then you have to install the VAP (value added package) and Flash Card Support Utility. You can choose the tools released for Satellite L500...
I did this and this worked

  • X200 keyboard light no longer works in Win7

I just updated the BIOS to the newest one (released Sept 2010). I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. My keyboard light was working in Vista a week ago, but after installing windows 7, the light stopped working. Anybody know a fix?

boot into bios menu (press F1 during laptop startup), now press the Fn + PgUp to see whether the light works. If it doesn't then you have a hardware or bios firmware fault.
You could try reflashing the bios to an older version and see whether that fixes the issue.

  • Sleep light no longer works

The sleep light on my iMac used to work, but not now. Is this possibly a software issue, or is it definitely a hardware problem for which a repair is needed to fix it.?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
What are you referring to as a sleep light? The previous white acrylic models of iMac, the PPC G5 and the Intel Core Duo and Core 2 Duo models had a power light that pulsated when the Mac was sleeping. However, since the introduction of the Aluminum models beginning in Mid 2007, iMacs have not had a power light.

  • Display's back lighting no longer works.

Have a MacBook air that is completely functional except for the fact that the display's back lighting is dead. Can see the desktop fine if you point a nice flashlight at the screen.
Is there a part I can order and replace to get a functional back light on my display again? Or am I stuck having to pay $700+ on an entire new display assembly? Perhaps just the LCD component of the assembly would be required or even better a simple back light panel/cable?

Not knowing which model MBA you have can mean the difference between an answer and none.
For the current models, it is probably more practical to replace the display panel as a whole than to disassemble it for just the backlighting components, if even doable. A replacement panel is around $500, from the likes of ifixit, plus the labor to install it for a current model MBA.
But if it is just a cable, as you speculate, only disassaembly is going to determine the feasability of a simpler repair.

  • Ambient light sensor not working..does anyone knows how it works or how can i get it to work

i have it on where it should adjust when im in a dark room or not and it just wont work is it something i should get fix or whats the proper way to fix it

If it's broken, there isn't much you can do except contact Apple.  However, it doesn't adjust much and the adjustment is almost impossible to detect!  Before you contact Apple, try one thing:
A System Reset cures many ills.  It's easy, quick and harmless.  Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.
A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.

  • The Illuminated lights on my keyboard no longer work

I just noticed last night that my Mac Book Pro's Illuminated keyboard lights no longer work. They used to work without any problems but now they don't. I don't use this feature often, so I don't know how long the problem has been occuring. I only just noticed it last night.
I tried resetting the PRAM and the power management, to no avail. The "Illuminate keyboard in low-light settings" button is checked in system preferences.
The strange thing is, I can press the keyboard light controllers on the keyboard and the indicator of the light level appears on the screen, but the lights don't actually come on.
The ambient light settings for the display are working fine. I don't understand what's going on with the keyboard lights. It's very irritant.
My Macbook Pro is one of June 2007's models, the Santa Rosa 15", 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. It came with Tiger and I upgraded to Leopard in December. Last week I upgraded to 10.5.3. Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes, as I said in my first post, that box is toggled. It still doesn't work. I've tried turning it off and back on and it still doesn't work.
I haven't even had this computer for a year yet already it's breaking down. 3 months after I bought I had to have the LED replaced because it was defective, and now this.
Why is this professional laptop that costs as much as it does breaking down after barely a year? I never had these problems with my IBM ThinkPad laptop. I only needed to take it in for support after 4 years of solid performance.
I don't expect to see these problems in a supposedly professional computer that is barely a year old.
    Oh well.
