Ambient MBP fan sound.

Background: Have an old iBook G4 12”, the first G4 iBook. Had 4 (count them) MBP 15” machines, ended up getting a refund on the 4th instead of a return. Looking to try my MBP luck again after reading about the new motherboard in week 25+ machines. Typing on a POS Dell at the moment.
What I am interested in is the idol fan noise. On my iBook, I can't hear a thing. When the machine is on you just can't hear anything, it’s excellent. Under intense load you hear the fan turn on, and once it's done it's thing the fan turns itself off.
Each of my MBP's had the whine and other problems, so they were returned for those reasons. But every one had the fan on all the time; I could hear the fan constantly. It came on louder under load, but dropped back to its still ‘audible-not-iBook-silent’ state. Comparing the MBP no load fan sound to this Dell fan is laughable, I can’t complain. The MBP sound isn’t terribly loud… but it is there.
Is this how it's meant to be? If it is I can live with it, it doesn’t drive me insane like the whine and it's a much faster machine... but I just thought I’d check up
Cheers.
iBook G4 12 800Mhz... looking at my 5th MBP :/   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have one of the first MBP. Originally the fan was essentially silent most of the time. After one of the patches, I notice the left fan just a little, a very quite sound that I have to listen for to hear. On a few occasions I purposely taxed the machine and noticed that the fans are variable speed, slowing ramping up as the heat grew. They quieted right back down when appropriate. Compared to other brands that I have owned, the Apple is the quietest notebook I've had. I have no whine, either. There is mild case warping. My first battery died after 2 months. Other than that, the machine is fine. Apple support has been awesome.

  • MBP fans & tilting

So tonight I wanted to see how much it takes to get the MBP fans running, as I've never, ever noticed them before. I wrote a Python script that uses 100% CPU, and ran it twice (once for each core). I started at 51C, and it quickly jumped up to 75C within 60 seconds of running the scripts. It got to 79C, and then I felt (but not heard) the fans come on. The only indication I had that they were running was the vibration they made. The temperature hovered around 73C.
But this is the interesting part. I lifted my MBP up so I could bring it closer to my ears. and all of a sudden I couldn't feel the fans anymore, and the temperature immediately spiked back up to 79C. When I leveled it out, the fans came back, and the temperature went down. If they turned off because the back vent was suddenly more open, why did the temperature spike? I can't think of anything.
Can anyone else confirm this, or am I just losing my mind?

They're treating you as such because to Apple it IS
well within specs. Some guy complained about his
computer going all the way 90 (almost boiling) and
apple said same crap and ur complaining w/ 79, thats
    all.
Yeah, heat is bad and Apple's paste-happy techs could
be partly to blame but, it is still "within specs".
I wonder how wide those specs are...
I was ready to buy a new Macbook Pro but after reading about all these heat issues and an undeclocked GPU and whining sounds I've been having second thoughts. I did find this spec sheet http://www.intel.com/design/intarch/coreduo/coreduo_spec.htm on the Intel website which does state that the core duo will run from 0-100c.
That being said I still think that temperatures approaching 90c is still too close to the wrong end of the specification. Surely the hotter it runs it must affect performance/lifespan. Does anyone know if the new Macbook Pros (released with the Macbooks) have addressed these heat issues and if they are still underclocking the GPU? (and 0-100c, I'd like to see one running at 0c, maybe in a blizzard whilst trekking the arctic circle)

  • Z800 fans sound is very loud

i have HP Z800 machine and its great for my graphic desgin , but i have a problem about noise the fans sound is very loud

Have you tried selecting fan speeds in CMOS setup?  (reboot and press F10)
Have you inspected ambient temperature sensor via HWMonitor?

  • Is MBP Fans always on?

well, I have notice while the room is empty and quit that the MBP Fans working so I got curious
I closed every application and Fans still working...
I restarted the OS and no application is running, still Fans working at 1999-2000 rpm
is that normal the Fans always working in no matter what condition the MBP is in?

The fans are on continuously to cool the Intel microprocessor and other components. If they weren't always "on", your machine would burn up by the heat created from the Intel chip. There are thermal detectors in your machine monitoring the components and controlling the speed of the fans. Therefore, on a hot day you'll probably notice the fan noise more; and on a cool day, less so.

The answer is, either you are not telling us the whole story, or something else has changed.  Perhaps your iPad is jealous of your iPod and is secretly forcing your iPod to reset it self.  And if you believe that, I have this bridge for sale....

Since you don't say how old your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

I'm completely confused. The iMac is hot? It's cool? I don't think we know yet it's a G5.
Anyway, if it's an iMac G5, for the fans try an SMU reset.

If it's not an iMac G5, Google "SMU Reset" for your model.

Hi, I bought my laptop about one week ago. Sometimes it has weird and loud sound. It looks like fan sound. Is that normal? What should I do?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • The fan sound of macbook air

Is it normal to hear the fan sound of macbook air. not all the time

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Sometimes, when you are doing heavy tasks with your computer, temperature increases. Your Mac turns on fans automatically when temperature increases a lot, so it will keep your computer safe. It's normal and you shouldn't be worried if this doesn't happen all the time

  • Scary fan sounds!!

Today, my 2006 MacBook started making some really bad fan sounds. It sounds almost like a weed whacker meets an old beat up car.
Here is an audio clip of the fan:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JSIDNHFE
Is this a known problem? Will it correct itself or am I going to have to choke up $150 at the Genius Bar?

I have an iBook whose fan makes the same sort of horrifying sounds. Luckily, the machine doesn't have to endure processor-intensive tasks (my MacBook takes care of those), so I'm able to get by with an external cooling pad. The iBooks are also a beast to tear down, and I don't want to inflict that task on the Apple folks in town.
    Good luck to you

  • PB-Fan sounds different suddenly, like "rit-rit-rit-rit"

i have my new PB 15" since xmas 2005. it is very quiet, it used to be, extremely quiet. i never heard the fan at all.
suddenly from one day to another the fan sounds like someone putting a piece of thin paper close to the fan and the fan touches it...weird

Mine does the same thing. Same type of noise when the fan comes on during processor intensive task. Mainly running VPC 7, or using Photoshop making huge changes or running a batch job converting hundreds of images to different sizes. The secon fan will kick it, its very noisy as if a thin piece of paper is running againts the blade. Exactly how you describe it. Very annoying and tell your what kind of quality Apple products are nowadays. My Dell D600 never made such noises even when the fan is at full throttle. This PB POS is so noisy, I'd be embarassed to used it during meetings.

  • Anyone encounter loud fan sound upon power up?

    Hi,
When I power up my iMac, I encountered a very loud fan sound in the background that I had never encountered before.
This happens despite turning off and powering up again.
Any idea what's happening?  And how to remedy the situation?
    Regards.

I would recommend downloading and running the popular, useful and FREE "iStat Pro" to see what the actual temperatures of your computer's inner components are. Then post the data here for us to see and comment.  You'll find it here:

  • Te 2012 iMac power on fan sound?

I get a quick power on 'click' when I first power my computer on.. It's comming from the center area.. I'm sure it's the fan powering up..
Thing is I don't think I've ever heard this before.. Or maybe I haven't noticed?
Can you hear a quick 'click' power on fan sound when you first power up the late 2012 iMac? It goes away immediately.. It's only on power up.
I have no HD, I'm using the SSD by the way. SO nothing else can be causing the sound..
    -Frank

It's doing that in order to clear out residual heat and dust. Unless it doesn't return to normal, don't worry about it.
