Ambiguity in JSP

Hi !!,
I have a query on jsps.
In my project we have an enhancement where we are trying to do the following :
1) We are having some existing users who can change their password through http://localhost/eportal/ChangePassword.jsp
2) [ENHANCEMENT] The new users, will login into loginhandler.jsp and then will change the password in ChangePassword.jsp.
We are maintaining the same ChangePassword.jsp in both the cases. However, we are encountering an issue here :
- The existing and new users are differentiated based on an error code.
For new users, we are capturing the errorcode in loginhandler.jsp using
String resul=loginRes+" ";
          session.setAttribute("errorcode",resul);
Then in ChangePassword.jsp we are doing the following :
String ercode=(String)session.getAttribute("errorcode");
String errcode=ercode.trim();
int erCode = Integer.valueOf(errcode).intValue();
//1111 is the errorcode of new user
if(erCode==1111){
------ execute below--------
For new users, this code is working perfectly fine. However, it is failing in case of existing users.
Here, when we are accesssing ChangePassword.jsp direclty incase of existing users, the getAttribute() doesnt know what it has to get and hence throws a Nullpointer exception.
We want to add such a condition that will skip the getAttribute() code in ChangePassword.jsp whenever we are accessing it for Existing Users and behave normally in case of new users.
Can you help me on this. If you need any inputs, then please let me know.

Add a check for null/non-null. How it looks depends on your functionality. Do you have an error code "1111" which signals special treatment, and after the special treatment new users and existing users behave the same? Then this may work:
String errcode = (String)session.getAttribute("errcode");
if ("1111 ".equals(errcode)) {
  //do new user work
//do all user workDo you have a situation where the new user gets one functionality and all other users get different?
String errcode = (String)session.getAttribute("errcode");
if("1111 ".equals(errcode)) {
  //do new user work
} else {
  //do all other user work
}Or maybe you have multiple error codes which should be treated differently:
String errcode = (String)session.getAttribute("errcode");
if ("1111 ".equals(errcode)) {
  //do new user work
} else if ("[other known error codes]".equals(errcode)) {
  //do other error handling work here
} else { /* or } else if (errcode == null) {  But be aware of what you want to
             happen in the default case when all if/else if are false... */
  //do existing user work here
}And none of this should be in a JSP. The JSP should be for display only. Put this sort of work inside a Servlet or a JavaBean.

    Hi Rahul,
    Someone had a similar question in another java newsgroup and there
    someone explained that "java.beans.*" is added to the imports in the
    generated Java file by the jsp container. Thus it seems to be an
    implicit import so as you already figured out you need to write the full
    path name to make it unambigous.
    Regards,
    /Helena

  • Running JSPs through Apache Jserv in OC4J

    hello there -
    I'm hoping someone can help me.
    I want index.jsp, our first page, to ACT like a JSP, rather than the current HTML. It seems that httpd.conf wont access OC4J, so i've attempted to access Jserv. Still, things wont work.
    If someone could please take a look at what i have so far in httpd.conf, more specifically, near the bottom where i've opened up Jserv, and let me know what i'm doing wrong, i'd greatly appreciate it!
    ## httpd.conf -- Apache HTTP server configuration file
    # Based upon the NCSA server configuration files originally by Rob McCool.
    # This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
    # See <URL:http://www.apache.org/docs/> for detailed information about
    # the directives.
    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
    # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    # After this file is processed, the server will look for and process
    # /devl/ics3/devl/apache/srm.conf and then /devl/ics3/devl/apache/access.conf
    # unless you have overridden these with ResourceConfig and/or
    # AccessConfig directives here.
    # The configuration directives are grouped into three basic sections:
    # 1. Directives that control the operation of the Apache server process as a
    # whole (the 'global environment').
    # 2. Directives that define the parameters of the 'main' or 'default' server,
    # which responds to requests that aren't handled by a virtual host.
    # These directives also provide default values for the settings
    # of all virtual hosts.
    # 3. Settings for virtual hosts, which allow Web requests to be sent to
    # different IP addresses or hostnames and have them handled by the
    # same Apache server process.
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do not begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "/usr/local/apache/logs/foo.log".
    ### Section 1: Global Environment
    # The directives in this section affect the overall operation of Apache,
    # such as the number of concurrent requests it can handle or where it
    # can find its configuration files.
    # ServerType is either inetd, or standalone. Inetd mode is only supported on
    # Unix platforms.
    ServerType standalone
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.
    # NOTE! If you intend to place this on an NFS (or otherwise network)
    # mounted filesystem then please read the LockFile documentation
    # (available at <URL:http://www.apache.org/docs/mod/core.html#lockfile>);
    # you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
    # Do NOT add a slash at the end of the directory path.
    ServerRoot "/oraapp/9iAS10220/home/Apache/Apache"
    # The LockFile directive sets the path to the lockfile used when Apache
    # is compiled with either USE_FCNTL_SERIALIZED_ACCEPT or
    # USE_FLOCK_SERIALIZED_ACCEPT. This directive should normally be left at
    # its default value. The main reason for changing it is if the logs
    # directory is NFS mounted, since the lockfile MUST BE STORED ON A LOCAL
    # DISK. The PID of the main server process is automatically appended to
    # the filename.
    #LockFile /devl/ics3/devl/apache/logs/httpd.lock
    # PidFile: The file in which the server should record its process
    # identification number when it starts.
    PidFile /devl/ics3/devl/apache/logs/httpd.pid
    # ScoreBoardFile: File used to store internal server process information.
    # Not all architectures require this. But if yours does (you'll know because
    # this file will be created when you run Apache) then you must ensure that
    # no two invocations of Apache share the same scoreboard file.
    ScoreBoardFile /devl/ics3/devl/apache/logs/httpd.scoreboard
    # In the standard configuration, the server will process httpd.conf (this
    # file, specified by the -f command line option), srm.conf, and access.conf
    # in that order. The latter two files are now distributed empty, as it is
    # recommended that all directives be kept in a single file for simplicity.
    # The commented-out values below are the built-in defaults. You can have the
    # server ignore these files altogether by using "/dev/null" (for Unix) or
    # "nul" (for Win32) for the arguments to the directives.

    # handle the current load, plus a few spare servers to handle transient
    # load spikes (e.g., multiple simultaneous requests from a single
    # Netscape browser).
    # It does this by periodically checking how many servers are waiting
    # for a request. If there are fewer than MinSpareServers, it creates

    # spares die off. The default values are probably OK for most sites.

    ### Section 3: Virtual Hosts
    # VirtualHost: If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your
    # machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations
    # use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about
    # IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.
    # Please see the documentation at <URL:http://www.apache.org/docs/vhosts/>
    # for further details before you try to setup virtual hosts.
    # You may use the command line option '-S' to verify your virtual host
    # configuration.
    # If you want to use name-based virtual hosts you need to define at
    # least one IP address (and port number) for them.
    # Use name-based virtual hosting.
    #NameVirtualHost 12.34.56.78:80
    #NameVirtualHost 12.34.56.78

    # o ExportCertData:
    # This exports two additional environment variables: SSL_CLIENT_CERT and
    # SSL_SERVER_CERT. These contain the PEM-encoded certificates of the
    # server (always existing) and the client (only existing when client
    # authentication is used). This can be used to import the certificates
    # into CGI scripts.
    # o StdEnvVars:
    # This exports the standard SSL/TLS related `SSL_*' environment variables.
    # Per default this exportation is switched off for performance reasons,
    # because the extraction step is an expensive operation and is usually
    # useless for serving static content. So one usually enables the
    # exportation for CGI and SSI requests only.
    # o CompatEnvVars:
    # This exports obsolete environment variables for backward compatibility
    # to Apache-SSL 1.x, mod_ssl 2.0.x, Sioux 1.0 and Stronghold 2.x. Use this
    # to provide compatibility to existing CGI scripts.

    # This denies access when "SSLRequireSSL" or "SSLRequire" applied even
    # under a "Satisfy any" situation, i.e. when it applies access is denied
    # and no other module can change it.

    # o ssl-unclean-shutdown:
    # This forces an unclean shutdown when the connection is closed, i.e. no
    # SSL close notify alert is send or allowed to received. This violates
    # the SSL/TLS standard but is needed for some brain-dead browsers. Use
    # this when you receive I/O errors because of the standard approach where
    # mod_ssl sends the close notify alert.
    # o ssl-accurate-shutdown:
    # This forces an accurate shutdown when the connection is closed, i.e. a
    # SSL close notify alert is send and mod_ssl waits for the close notify
    # alert of the client. This is 100% SSL/TLS standard compliant, but in
    # practice often causes hanging connections with brain-dead browsers. Use
    # this only for browsers where you know that their SSL implementation
    # works correctly.
    # Notice: Most problems of broken clients are also related to the HTTP
    # keep-alive facility, so you usually additionally want to disable
    # keep-alive for those clients, too. Use variable "nokeepalive" for this.

    Weird ... that works.
    So, I created the dummy account which was also failing as follows:
    create user newuser identified by oracle;
    grant developer_role to newuser;This fails, but only from a Form running under OC4J, until I run:
    ALTER SYSTEM SET sec_case_sensitive_logon = FALSE scope = MEMORY;While I've made this change in our development database, I don't really want to do the same eventually in PROD. I'd rather figure out what's changed about how OC4J connects, find a rememdy there, and set this back to TRUE.
    Since I didn't create the username or password as a string literal (to ensure lowercasing), I'm confused as to what's happening. When the init parm is set to TRUE, when the dialog box pops up for the form after the invalid username/password error, I tried entering the password in all lowercase, and then in all uppercase, to no effect. Both fail.

  • Compiling / Running a Java file in JSP

    Hi,
    ok, I have a jsp page, which we will call page 1. Once I go to that page, I all I want it to do is compile a certain file.java, and then run the file.java. The user doesn't actually know that this is going on in the background. Page 1 automatically redirects the user to page 2 (also a jsp page).
    The java program that I created (that was previously compiled and ran) creates a special javascript file. After running the file.java in page #1, the java file creates a javascript file that will be used in page 2 to display a tree node (group of information).
    so, right now, I'm trying to figure out how to write the jsp code that will tell how to compile and run a java file. I was thinking about using javabeans before, but I think you HAVE to actually display the contents of the java file into the jsp (I think). Anyhow, thanks for the help!

    sorry about being ambiguous before. What I mean by
    running a java file was that I already created a java
    file. I don't want to hava my java statements inside
    the jsp file. I just want the jsp file have a command
    in it that would call a java file, tell the java file
    to compile and run. All the jsp file would do
    (hopefully) is just give commands for a seperate java
    file to compile and run. Thanks again for any help!Ok, so this other java file has some entry-point method, like main(), right? So call it...
    <%
    YourJavaClass.main(appropriateArgumentsGoHere);
    %>
    or better yet, it's an object you can use:
    <%
    YourJavaClass x = new YourJavaClass();
    x.callSomeMethodHere(withAppropriateArgumentsHere);
    x.callAnotherMethodMaybe();
    %>
    You don't need the jsp file to "compile" this java file, you'd already have compiled it beforehand, and it's class bytecode needs to be in your classpath (on the server side) of course.

  • Connecting to a database in JSP

    If I had an Access database called "testDB" which has no username or password, how would I go about connecting to it in JSP? I have a book but it's a little ambiguous. My code for my Bean to connect to a database is below, I just need to know how I can access it from a JSP page...
    import java.sql.*;
    public class DataSourceBean{
         private static String url;
         private static String username;
         private static String password;
         public void setDriver(String driver) throws ClassNotFoundException {
              Class.forName(driver);
         public void setUrl(String aUrl){
              url=aUrl;
         public void setUsername(String aUsername){
              username=aUsername;
         public void setPassword(String aPassword){
              password=aPassword;
         public static Connection getConnection() throws SQLException{
              return DriverManager.getConnection(url, username, password);
    }Thanks for any help.

    Hi, This is Aykut Yararbas;
    You already have what you need in your hand.
    1. import the package that conations your DataSourceBean
    <%@page import="com.package.DataSourceBean"%>
    2. Import java.sql.* package as in (1)
    3. Instantiate your class
    <%DataSourceBean dsb = new DataSourceBean();
    // Set the usr , pass, url
    dsb.setUrl("jdbc:db2:testDb");
    dsb.setUsername("username");
    dsb.setPasssword("password");
    //Ready to receive connection
    Connection con = dsb.getConnection();
    %>
    This solves your question
    But I do not advice implementing the data access at JSP level.

    Your class defines 4 variables as type "Statement". It looks as if you import java.beans.Statement and java.sql.Statement (or java.beans.* and java.sql.*). The compiler is unable to determine which class you want.
    Either change the import statement or specify the fully qualified class name. e.g.
    java.sql.Statement stmt = null;

    Hi Ravindra,
    by default when a JSP is converted into a Servlet it imports the java.beans.* package.
    All you need to do is in your linke of code:
    Statement stat = conn.createStatement();
    Change it to:
    java.sql.Statement stat = conn.createStatement();
    I think this will fix your problem.
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • Is JSP better than PSP base on application

    Hi,
    everybody JSP is better then PSP.
    Is there any application that can take advantage of PSP technology.
    thanks
    Sreeram

    What i am wondering is why the large companies choose to use a complex setup of application servers when they could just set up a CMS in PHP which they could just buy from some place, install easily and then they could just start writing articles for example.Not all "large" websites are mere CMSs. Of the CMS solutions, the best ones do not run under PHP, thus not all CMS based websites choose PHP.
    Why does large companies use this complex solution of application servers instead of PHP which would be a much simpler setup... is it because PHP doesnt scale as well as java or what is it ?The advantages of PHP are that it is free, easy to understand for beginners, and simple for small applications. It's a natural choice for inexperienced developers.
    The advantages of Java/J2EE are that it is well supported, very structured, and has a massive library of standard and external libraries to support it.
    What's PHP's answer to messaging solutions? To linear programming? To integration with legacy systems? It may well be that PHP doesn't scale, but that's the least of its problems in the enterprise world.
    Your questions sounds suspiciously like "I like PHP, why is Java so complicated?" and the answer is "The complexity exists because sometimes we need it."
    (Edited ambiguity in opening para).

  • JSPServler: Jsp to Java conversion crashes...

    Hi there,
              I am using home made beans in my jsp pages, and one of my bean contains a
              File class.
              And this myBean.File class clashes with the java.io.File class in the
              generated java pages.
              Compilation fail and I get the following error message:
              Ambiguous class: java.io.File and myPackage.mybean.File
              I located the error cause in the generated java file:
              * This code was automatically generated at 10:55:38 on 22 mai 00
              * by weblogic.servlet.jsp.Jsp2Java -- do not edit.

              java.io.File f = null; long lastModWhenBuilt = 0L, lastMod = 0L;
              f = new File("D:\\InetPub\\MySite\\jsp\\sample1.jsp");
              the error comes from "new File" that should be "new java.io.File"
              But as this file is generated by the JSPServlet engine I have no control on
              it...
              Is there any way to force the JSPservlet engine to prefix all class names in
              the generated java file ?

  • JSPs not loading properly

              Hi,
              When I load a jsp, the parameter values are not loaded properly.
              For example the following line:
              <frame name="workpane" id="workpane" frameborder="1" scrolling="No" marginwidth="0"
              marginheight="0" src="/jsp/library/generic/loading.jsp?refresh=/jsp/library/generic/workspace.jsp?rows1=66$rows2=34$activepane=/list$apn1=scope$apv1=5000$apn2=type$apv2=3$previewpane=/default_previewpane.html">
              IS LOADED AS
              Loading: strRefreshURL= with parameters Param=refresh=/jsp/library/generic/workspace.jsp?rows1=66$rows2=34$activepane=/list$apn1=scope$apv1=5000$apn2=type$apv2=
              3$previewpane
              values=/default_previewpane.html
              Why does it do it this way?
              Is the $ sign making it do it this way?
              Thanks

    Hi again,
              Actually, you could simplify your dilemma if you use
              java.net.URLEncoder to encode your URL's. You should first apply it to the nested URL you have here, then apply it to the outer URL. I.e.
              <% String nestedURL=java.net.URLEncoder.encode("\"action=loadtree&scope=" +
              Scope.getSystemScope() +
              "&type=" +
              ControllerFactory.getDocumentTypeForName("folder") +
              "&disurl=/jsp/system/admintree.jsp\">"); %>
              <frame name="treepane" id="treepane" frameborder="1" scrolling="No" marginwidth="0"
              marginheight="0" src="<%= nestedURL %>" >
              Keeping your code simple will save you a lot of headaches :)

              Also - it's ambiguous. Even I can't figure out which of these query parameters are intended to be part of the value for 'refresh' or are extra query parameters of 'loading.jsp'.
              This is why you need to URLEncode the parameters that you don't intend to be interpreted by 'loading.jsp'. The URLEncoded representation for ? is %3f and & is %26, so, this would mean your refresh value should be (assuming all of the query parameters are part of the "refresh" sub-query-parameter)...

    According to the release notes, for the JRCHelperSample to compile, you must set the target runtime for the project.
    To do this, either create a project from scratch that uses the Tomcat 5.5 target runtime, or go to the properties menu and ensure that the target runtime is set to the application server you will be using.

  • .How can I add data from one list to other in Jsp Page

    Hi..I have three multiple selection ListBox..I want to add the selected item from 2 list boxes to 3rd list box how can i do that..do i need to write javascript? If possible then suggest me some link where i can get help?
    Thanks
    Regards
    Chintan

    Yep, Javascript.
    Unless you want to post the data to the server and then rewrite the page (ie. jsp/servlets) then you are going to need to use a client side script to modify the page.
    Javascript. You need to get the onClick() event of one list box and get the item that was clicked. then you can rewrite the 3rd list box.
    If possible, try doing a search on google. Or do you want someone to hold your hand.
