AMC export avi with no compression takes AGES! across network

Heres one for the pro's
     Im having some really anoying slow behavior with premiere and media encoder.
     OS=windwos vista business x64
     RAM = 12gigs
     CPU= 2 X quads
     Video card = bad *** nvidia card
SAN = Isilon cluster 3 X nodes, gigabit dual teamed NIC connection
bla bla bla
          Ok. So i have about an 8 minute project, nothing too fancy, trying to export an uncompressed avi to the network at 720p resolution to the cluster storage array, and adobe media encoder gets pretty slow near the end of the export, and is generally just a slow hog. Its not using but 10% of my CPU power, and its also not using any where close to my max NIC card throughput.
     Anyone out there really good at FINE Tuning CS4 to the max??

Network output has never been a problem for me, even without teamed NIC's. OK, it is slower than local disks, but it has never taken AGES.
First, do you experience the same problem when outputting to a local disk? If yes, then something with the export seems amiss. Then we need further details on your export settings to start with. If no, your network connection may be the troublesome part. What server OS are you using, what overhead/security can be degrading throughput on the NIC's? Are you using virtualization, if so what software? With other tasks on the network, do you experience the same lagging response?

10.5.6 verifying with DiskUtility can take ages

I recently upgraded a Powerbook G4 to 10.5.6 with a MacBoxSet. Although 10.5 is a bit bigger than 10.4, DiskUtility can often take ages to check permissions. Just the first step, reading the permissions database can easily take over 15 minutes. And I check on a regular basis. Another machine (G5 DP) I also upgraded is usualy a lot faster. How come? And is there something I can do about it?

no. this is normal. permissions repair in leopard takes longer.
Two things.
1. verifying permissions is a waste of time. it does nothing. repair permissions directly.
2. repairing permissions is not something you need to do often that would also be waste of time. once before system updates is more than enough.

Exporting MP4 from an MP4 takes ages

Hi,
I am confused about the xporting feat. of iMovie 08. I Bought an ipod Touch 4g to shoot HD Video. Result is fine. I import the MP4 using iPhote and have them ready in iMovie 08 to arrange with titles, etc. Now I want to export to MP4 again I thought hey format is the same no compression/rendering needed. But exporting on my iMac 20" 2.2Ghz takes more than 300 mins. for a 30 Min clip.
What is going on here. Is there a better way to get my iPod movies to a DVD or MP4 clip?!?!!? I heard iMovie 11 is even worse but iMovie 06 should be king?

Unable to play .avi with Cinepak compression with Quicktime

I have multiple short .avi files that were created with a Cinepak compression. Before upgrading to Leopard, I had no problem playing these clips. After upgrading to Leopard, when I tried to view the clips through Quicktime, I receive the error "The movie could not be opened . Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -1.)". I was able to view the clips with iMovie '08, but when I tried to compile the movie and send the clips to either a .mov or .avi format from iMovie, I just got a blank screen. I assume that I am missing an important codec. Any suggestions?

Exporting .avi with PNG24 graphics

I'm trying to use flash to create an intro for a movie. I am
importing graphics into flash as png24 files. They are logos that I
can't recreate. I'm exporting an .avi file (I don't have QT pro, so
the .mov option won't work for me). When I import the movie into
premiere (elements), the png has a black background where it should
be transparent. How can I fix this?

Using 3rd party encoders has been the solution for a long time, but it always seemed so unnecessary since Premiere currently can export mp3 just fine.
As for why, there are a few reasons and I would hate to throw my user-case out here and then have everyone tell me (thats not what premiere was designed for) or something, but I will give my situation in short. Ive posted about this in other places but I export to techsmith avi for screencasts and yes I end up converting it to h264 anyway but I also keep the original export for archival purposes and I always use the avi to transcode. Right now I use something like virtual dub to change the audio without having to re-export the video and it works but its still a bit time consuming. The reason I want mp3 instead of PCM is simply due to fiesize. I can get away with 128kbps mp3 file just fine and end up saving tons of archival disc space.
Having said all that, Im sure there could be plenty of other use cases and hopefully an engineer will read this and say, "That would be very easy to implement and expand peoples options".

Apple Logo With Spinning Wheel Takes Ages

Hi all,
A peculiar issue with my awesome MacBook Pro.
I installed Windows 7 via Boot Camp, then deleted the partition using disk utility and resizing Macintosh HD. After removing the partition, my Mac boots slow. It will show the Apple logo quite soon after power-on, but then it stays at the Logo with the spinning wheel for 40 seconds or so before I see the login window!! I have tried to reset PRAM but to no avail.... So I decided to re-install Windows 7 via Boot Camp and do another PRAM reset and now it only takes 25 seconds (at the Apple logo) But on my pal's MacBook it takes like 10 seconds?? Do i need to Defragment my hard drive? Any tips in doing so?

Setting up my Line6 UX1 with Audtion 3.0 on Win7 - settings dialog takes ages to respond

I downloaded the trial of Adobe Audition 3.0 (I've been using 1.5 on WinXP for a few years now and it's always been fine to use!)
I am trying to set up my Line6 POD Studio UX1 with Audtion 3.0 on Windows 7 Pro (64 Bit - 32GB RAM Quad Core Intel i7 3770 Processor)
I am noticing that the Settings dialog takes ages to respond and update with the changes I make - when I eventually managed to get playback - the playback only came out on the left monitor.
I should mention that I am doing this on a previous Audition 1.5 session - Audition 3.0 saved the session as a new session so I think that should be fine.
What I'm looking for here is the correct settings I need to use in Audition 3.0 to use my UX1.
I don't want to pay for Audition 3.0 if it's not going to work for me!

You won't be able to pay for Audition 3 since it was discontinued several years ago. However you may be able to upgrade to AA3 for free as a previous Audition user.

Install ClamXav and run a scan with that. It should pick up any trojans.

Thank you very much for your reply gdgmacguy :) I did all you suggested apart from restore as new device . Didn't know I could do that . After restore I did restore from back up only, as I didn't want to end up without contacts details on my phone. If I restore as new device how do I get my all contacts? Still will have to use back up? Sorry if it sounds like I don't know what i am doing, i just have no one to ask who would know. Thank you

CS4: Exporting "lightweight" AVI with chapter marks?

Prior to CS4, I recall being able to export a "lightweight" AVI file using black video filler and the "Expand Stills" option that would contain chapter marks. You could import this AVI into Encore, where the chapter marks would be recognized, and then use the "Replace Asset" option to replace the AVI with an M2V encoded in a different encoder. This worked great--but I can't seem to get it to work any more. I'm guessing that whatever enabled this feature was forcibly extracted when the Media Encoder went solo, but if not--how the heck do I do this?

Don't see anything like that in CS3. Closest thing to it is this: Export / movie / settings / compile settings ....

In the previous version Premiere Pro CS3 i can export the video into avi with the same quality using Windows Media Video 9 Codec but in Premiere Pro CS5 i don't know how to do it...!!

After you have downloaded and installed Lagarith and UT, reboot and just choose to Export to MS AVI, and then in the Compressor drop-down, choose the one that you want.

I am agree with you Bill but how can we import these codecs into adobe premiere pro.Because it expects only .epr extension for importing presets.Is there any other way then let me know.Thanks in advance

.MOV exported to .AVI with QTpro fails to play in Windows Media Player

I have a .MOV file that I converted with 7.1.6 of QTpro to a .AVI ( DV/DVCPRO - NTSC / Best / 4:3 ) ( uncompressed 48kHz / 16bit / 2 channel ). The converted .AVI file will not play in Windows Media Player or load in Premiere. The converted .AVI will play in QT. I have previously converted .DV files to .AVI without any problems. If I load the converted .AVI with VirtualDub it says there is a missing "index" and precedes to read the entire .AVI file to "re-create" the "index".
Can anybody offer any clues as to what is going wrong?

Are you referring to a Lynda.com Compressor tutorial or one of their many PPT tutorials.
I agree that 10 Mbs is a nice general quality level – depending on your footage, of course – the content, the lighting, etc. WMV is probably the safest – although MP4 should be good as well,
Hard to be more specific except to say, Test. A preset that works well for one movie may look not-so-great applied to another.
Take a short, representative section and encode. Project the output file and see what you think.

Best settings to export with least compression

I am adding Denoiser to some clips in my project. Best workflow is to add to raw footage, render out and bring back into project (to edit and render to final export). I am working with AVCHD footage - 1920 x 1080 30 fps.
What is the best setting to choose to export to with the understanding that I will bring the footage back into PPRO CS5 to edit and render for a second time?

Hi my iMac hangs when browsing and letters typed from my key board take ages to show and the ability to scroll in safari is difficult almost non existent. However when I log in as a Guest my computer acts fine. I have cleaned caches verified disk etc to no avail.
