AMD 3000 on K7N2G-ILSR won't boot

I just upgraded my CPU and RAM from an AMD 1600+ to a AMD 3000+ and from (2) 256MB Crucial DDR to (2) 512MB Kingston 333mhz DDR. I also installed a new fan that is recommended from AMD's website for the Athlon XP 3000+. The Thermaltake A1671 Volcano 10. After I installed the new RAM, CPU and FAN, the computer won't boot. The initial beep didn't even sound. I have the D-Bracket hooked up and it hangs at: "System Power ON - The D-LED will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly" The chip is OEM from a well known computer website Monarch Computer I also cleared the CMOS. Right now I have the new RAM (Kingston) running fine with my old CPU and the new fan is on the old CPU. Either the chip is dead or I am doing something wrong. Any help would be most appreciated.
thanks in advance,
jon

Hi,
I agree with previous posters as to your possible power issues. However, did you try setting your FSB jumper to SAFE when clearing CMOS - if not do so!
It's not included on Assaf's CMOS clearing guide on the forum but it's a good idea to do so! It is mentioned in a later post in that thread tho' - see here:

Read Assaf's guide then "Santa Claw's" too!

  • MSI K7N2G-ILSR will not boot from CD!!!

    Specs:
    MSI K7N2G-ILSR
40 GB Maxtor HD (IDE1 Master)
    HP 9100i CDRW (IDE2 Master)
    AMD XP 1800+
    512 Megs PC2100 DDR
I cannot get this thing to boot from a CD for the life of me.  I have tried using 4 different CD drives.  I have tried both IDE channels.  I have ran both drives jumperless.
Bios recognises the drive.  I have Floppy, CDROM, HDD1 as the boot sequence.  I have tried switching the boot sequence around.
I am completely stumped and extremely frustrated.  Somebody, please help me.  ANY advice would be appreciated, let's get this problem solved!

    thanks for pointing that out!
the jumpers were in the wrong place.  i should have read the manual more in depth instead of being in a hurry.  i feel like such an idiot!
everything seems to be running fine.  time will tell i guess.

  • K7N2G-ILSR: How to boot from SATA when a raid card is installed

    The situation:
    1. I have a separate raid controller (Silicon chip) with 2 drives on raid 0.
    2. I have another drive (my boot drive) that I want to place on the onboard Promise SATA raid controller.
    The problem:
The bios doesn't include an option to specifically boot from SATA, only SCSI. So when I place my boot drive to the onboard Promise SATA raid controller, the system won't boot because it's looking for system files on the raid 0 drive.
Is there a workaround for this?

Well, all my drives are IDE. I did try the SATA RAID using lumberjacker's bios but it isn't stable.
Aside from 3 IDE drives, I also have 2 atapi drives (cdr-w, dvd).
    Here's my current setup:
ide 0 - boot drive (master), DVD (slave)
    ide 1 - cdr-w (master)
onboard ide (sata controller) - (vacant)
    SATA 1 - (vacant)
    SATA 2 - (vacant)
promise raid card (2 ide ports)- 2 hard drives on raid 0 (both as master)
What I really want to do is place my boot drive on the SATA port (using a pata to sata converter), or on the onboard promise parallel port. So that it can have it's own port.

  • K7N2 Delta ILSR won't boot from FDD or HD

I have a serious problem with my new K7N2 delta ILSR based computer.
    My machine is
    K7N2 delta ILSR 400W
    3.3/25 5/32 12/15 V/A PSU
    512+256 MB A-data 3200 ram
    Athlon XP2500+
    BTC 48x24x48 Combo
    100 mb Zip int. -disabled
    120 GB Seagate barracuda SATA-disabled
    120 GB Seagate Barracuda parallel
    Triplex parasouls ATI 9600PRO 128MB
The machine POST's normally with all 4 lights doing what they should.
The Promise BIOS can detect the SATA drive correctly but when an attempt is made to write the array an error- 'error modifying array- system is going to reboot- press any key to reboot>" is given.
The M/B BIOS detects the FDD and Seagate Parallel drives correctly but when a correctly formatted XP boot disc (or Mandrake Linux or Caldera DR-DOS) is placed in the floppy drive a "no system disk" error is given.
When you F6 to install RAID drivers in the Windows XP install and the screen comes up where you are prompted to insert the floppy there is no mass storage device detected.
I purchased a new FDD and it gives precisely the same error as the original.
I installed the parallel Seagate in another system and installed and activated windows XP on it. After re-installing it in the K7N2 system I was disappointed to discover that it will not boot off the hard drive. When you boot from the XP CD the machine locks up. (Disconnecting the HD it will boot normally)
This is a real puzzle as it is possible to format the hard drive using Max Blast3- the maxtor disk utility which is based ( as is the Seagate Seatools utility) on Caldera DR-DOS). And I can't see why it should boot from a CD-ROM and not from any other correctly formatted boot disk.
I suspect a problem in either the (South?) bridge that controls the peripherals or the BIOS. I am at a loss how to re-flash the BIOS with out the use of the floppy drive- unless this can be done from a CD-ROM.
The PSU is not being strained and nForce list both RAM sticks as OK.

The Fd light behaves normally. i.e. lights up when the drive is being accessed.
has anybody else noted that the FDD is B by default- That the cables have a few wires twisted like the wires between the first and second plugs on the old cables?
The IDE 80 wire(counted!) is long end in the board- my plugs are all 3 black. You can't put them in the wrong way becaue of the centre key.
All the stands are plastic except for two brass ones that are in the centre of the board that go to circular mount pads. That is how the case came and I thought it was a design feature.
The thing I find most puzzleing is that i can boot a caldera based system that finds everything including the floppy- and read it- (provided you call it drive B!) yet naything DOS based won't go- I have this feeling that it has a screwed up DOS call that is not looking in the right disk sector for NTldr or whatever to boot. I think this is a bios problem- but I am not sure how to find out when you can't boot from the FDD.
My brother has talked to some tech friends and there word is that this is a weird one- probably a dud board RTS.

  • [Athlon64] msi k8mm-ilsr won't boot

    hey guys,
My girls computer isn't booting. I can't even boot off a CD. I get the same thing everytime.
The last attempt to restart the system failed from its previous location failed. Attempt to restart again?
Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
    Continue with system restart
It appears that the system freezes at that point. Anyone have a clue?
The computer has been working fine for over a year.

    ???????
    You didn't press the Any-key????
Or you have a stupid USB-keyboard? If so then use a PS/2 one....
Ps. dude...you need to set the USB support to keyboard support etc, or it won't react.....that's why I still use PS/2 stuff, none of such trouble.

  • K7N2G-ILSR won\\\\\\\'t run memtest at 133MHz fsb

I've already sent an inquiry to MSI technical support but I'm posting here too.
I've owned a DFI AD70 for 1 year running a 1.4GHz Thunderbird, but it has not worked right from the start with 1 DIMM slot being dead the whole time.  I bought the MSI board as my stability hasn't been perfect and the one game my wife likes to play with me, Age of Kings, crashes constantly during it. :(
Here' the system I installed the ILSR board in:
    TigerPro 300 Watt Power Supply,
    Tekram DC390F SCSI controller
    Maxtor 40GB 7200 Hard Drive
    IBM 4.5GB SCSI Hard Drive
    SCSI ZIP Drive
    Plextor 40X12X20 IDE CD-RW
    NEC 32X SCSI CD-ROM
    BestData 56k (Rockwell) Modem
    2- 256MB Samsung PC2100 DIMMS
I was using a soundblaster live, and Asus 6800 Geforce
    card in my DFI system.
Everything worked well in install, but game Age of Kings was still not stable with MSI board.  Instead of crashing or rebooting it would just freeze.  After trying Windows 2000 service packs, and every patch I could find, I resorted to pulling out all my expansion cards and disconnecting all the drives but my Maxtor IDE and Floppy.  I also disabled everything but onboard video.  The game still froze.  Finally I tried underclocking the processor.  This worked well.  I could run the game as long as I was at 130MHz fsb or less.  At 133 it would always fail.
Finally after scouring this message board I downloaded memtest-86 v 3.0.  I removed my maxtor hard drive so now I had only the bare motherboard and floppy installed.  I ran it at default settings and memtest froze 2 minutes into the test.  Then I gradually lowered fsb by 1 MHz until I could get it to run for hours at 128MHz (stability in Win 2000 was excellent at this setting too).  At 129 it would freeze.  The only other settings that worked were lowering clock multiplier to 8.0 and using 133 MHz bus.  It also runs fine at 133 MHz memory clock and 100MHz FSB.  I tried using my Asus video card without onboard video and same freezing problem.
I also reinstalled my old DFI board, with just my video card and floppy and it ran memtest fine at 133MHz fsb, and the memory modules passed fine.
I was hoping to just buy new RAM, but it works fines for me. There were never any errors reported during any memetest run ?(  Also of note I haven't flashed my BIOS if that matters.  Any ideas?

    3.3V 14A, 5V 30A, 12V 15A
    160W combined 3.3V, 5V
The MSI utility says power output is 3.3V, 5V, and 11.70V when I'm running Windows.  Although I thought this was low, it runs fine on the old board.
Temps run 52C CPU, system 32C after it has been running for several hours.
I placed a large 21 inch oscillating fan facing straight into the side of my case on high speed, with the case open, and memtest actually failed quicker, but it dropped CPU temp to 51C, and system to 28C.
At 133 MHz, the BIOS is stable and so is Windows 2000, but most games will freeze eventually and Age of Kings right away.

  • 3000 N100 0768 A52 won't boot

    1. I have set the BIOS to  (un)quiet so I can see what is going on. Power on, POST goes through to Mouse Initialized then stops and does nothing.
    2. following directions gathered... If I hit F1 while the POST is running, I get the BIOS set up. It shows I am on 1.08 although I have repeatedly flahed 3.12.
    3. continuing with directions gathered I move to "discard changes and exit", selecting that, and the Boot continues with my newly installed Windows 7. I guess this option skips the rest of the POST. Windows loads just fine and everything works. Windows in on my C: drive which is listed second in order; first is my DVD/CD drive.
    4. my memory has tested fine, and I took it out and put it back in.
    5. I can't figure out (and I tried) how to get to the CMOS backup batter to clear it by using jumbers or disconnecting the battery, so don't ask me to do that again unless you know an easy way...
    6. used Mac341.exe to try to re-set CMOS, maybe it worked, but it didn't change anything.
    7. I can live with hitting f1 everytime I power on, but there must be something wrong that can be fixed.
I can't think of anything else, but let me know what I should do or provide for an answer.
    Thanks
    David.

I can now boot.  I reverted the BIOS to the earliest available at Lenovo support. Maybe there will be other problems because of this, but I am up and running.

  • XP won't boot, mising dll, asking for install cd

I have a friends Lenovo 3000 C200, and it won't boot.  I do not have a Lenovo Install disk, but do have a XP Pro install disk.  When using it, at the start of the recovery, I get prompted for the admin password, which I nor he knows.
With the hard drive in an external SATA cradle, I can view it on my windows 7 box, but there are no files in his profile's My Documents folder, just 200 empty folders.  There should be numerous pictures from his camera in the folders with dates that the pics were taken.
I found a sma.txt file on C:\ that has a list of files from his documents folder, and it relates to the time a backup was evidently done prior to the OS crash.  Backup is in the C:\RRbackups folder.   I have made a backup of this folder (29.5Gb) on my external hard drive, in case I screw up something.
How do I procede?  I discovered pon visiting this forum I can boot into the previously unknown recovery partitioin on his hard drive, and do some sort of recovery, but that sounds like it would wipe out the back up files I mentioned above.
    What is my next move?

    hi BretShooter,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Just to verify, when you're scanning for document / picture files to backup on the XP drive, do you have "Show hidden files and folders" unchecked on the Folder Options?
    - Link to picture
If "Show hidden files" is unchecked then the data must have gotten deleted along with the missing .dll files. If the files are very important I would ran first an undelete utility to recover the files (e.g. via Active Undelete or similar utility).
From here, you can proceed if you'll install a clean Windows XP Pro, install it in parallel, or perform a repair on the current Windows XP installerion.

  • AMD 3000+ cannot set the fsb in order to boot

    Hi,
My system below worked fine with an AMD 2100 chip. I recently bought a 3000+ chip and slotted in to my PC - all booted up fine.  I then changed the FSB within bios to 166 - and then rebooted - the machine didn't boot and I had to clear the CMOS.
I worked out that I cannot set the fsb to anything above 139 fsb else the machine won't boot and I have to reclear the CMOS...I have no idea what to do
    Anyone got any ideas pleaaaaseee?????
btw I took the cpu down to the dealer and it worked fine there.

but before I give you my system spec - I stuck in a 550W power supply and all is fine.
However when I clock it up to 166 system crashes - better ram needed I guess.
But FSb at 160 is fine....
Considering its warm weather at the mo - my machie hits around 50 -55 degrees when playing something like fs2004.

  • KT3 Ultra2 AMD 2800+ won't boot at 166 fsb

    Hello guys / girls,
I've searched the database multiple times for this, but couldn't find anyone with the same problem:
My computer won't boot into windows or linux at fsb 166, it crashes during starting of the OS. When I reduce the fsb to 160, everything runs fine. First I thought it was the processor which would get too hot, but it's not getting too hot, only 27 C idle!!! The proc is designed to run at 333 / 2 = 166 mhz fsb so I don't see what's going wrong...
    My specs:
    KT3 Ultra2 mainboard
    AMD 2800+ proc
    noname psu: +3.3 28 A, +5 30 A, +12 15 A
Thermaltake volcano 7+ fan at low speed, gives proc temp of 27 deg. C idle
    Kingston DDR-SDRAM PC3200 - 512 MBytes
    CPU-Z info: http://bootje.servebeer.com/transfer/cpuz.htm

But why is it working at an fsb of 160 mhz?? I am using that configuration now, and no problem. The problems start when I increase the fsb to 162 or higher...
Also, according to the guy who sold me the memory, the memory should also work at 333 mhz.
Before I had an XP2800+ proc, I had a XP1700+ proc, which ran at a default fsb of 133 (tweaked to 140 (of course)), with the same configuration as I have now, and no problems at all... So the memory then ran at 266 mhz, thats even lower than 333... But i'll give it a go with different memory, but I can only do that after the weekend (roommate with other memory is gone for the weekend...)
Anyone other suggestions what the problem could be??

  • Blank Screen On boot up K7N2G-ILSR

Hi, i have finally resolved the issue about the Floppy disk controller. However, the screen remains blank, but everything works, windows even loads, but i cannot see anyting, i have cleared the cmos, tried the default setting (100mhz) but nothing worked! Any ideas?
    thnx
    p.s
    my system is a:
    MSI K7N2G-ILSR
    2 sticks 256mg pc2700 ddr sdram
    80gb seagate barracuda
    dvd drive
    cd-rw drive
    300w psu
    modem

    I had a similar problem.
I flashed the bios to 1.3, then rebooted. It was fine.
Loaded High Perf. defaults in the bios. rebooted, and the screen showed nothing, but the system booted.
Tried to reboot a few more times, but nothing.
Sometimes the boot process would hang on initialising the floppy drive (determined by diagnostic leds).
I turned off the pc. Used the 'Clear Cmos' jumper, then unplugged my Radeon from the M/B, and put the monitor cable onto the onboard card. Rebooted, and got a screen image.
I then loaded default bios settings, powered off, reseated the Radeon card, and everything was working fine again.

When I removed the all the IDE connectors from the motherboard, I was able to finally get into the bios, which suggested to me that the problem may be my IDE drives.  At this point, I remembered an issue my girlfriend had on her computer over a year ago with her hard drive (same model as mine) where her drive wouldn't allow her ABIT KT7 MB to boot.  We both have the WD600AB model.  My previous MB was an Asus K7M, which did not exhibit this issue.
The 'solution' that I found on the Western Digital Forums was modify the IDE cable by cutting PIN 1 (on a 40-Pin Ribbon Cable) or PINS 1 & 2 (on an 80-Pin Ribbon Cable).  PIN 1 is normally the wire with the red stripe.  If your WD is on the end plug, make the cut between the two IDE device plugs so that it doesn't affect the second device.  Also, to make sure the cut is complete, cut it twice and remove the gap.
From what I understand, this doesn't affect the integrity of the data nor does it have any performance penalties.  If you'd rather not cut the cable yourself, WD may ship you a modified cable free of charge.  You'd need to visit their forums/website for more information.
If you've got a spare cable to test with, give it a shot.  Once I snipped pins 1&2, my K7N2G-ILSR has been running beautifully!

I have a feeling I'm stuck with this, but maybe there's a eureka-moment I've missed? Having looked through the forum I've seen similar problems but I'm not sure this is the same.

    No AGP or PCI cards.
CPU idles at 30C, sustained load at 40C.
    =====================================================
I've tried all the CMOS reset, battery in/out etc suggestions with no change in symptoms.
Disconnecting HDs, DVD and front fan make no difference. BIOS v1.2, 3, 4, 5, 6 make no difference.
This is the 2nd motherboard... the first one (rest of system unchanged) worked great as far as booting went but had the INCREDIBLY ANNOYING HIGH-PITCHED NOISE from near the CPU socket. This was after running with the auxillary 12V (4 pin) cable plugged in. According to posts elsewhere in the forum, once that 12V cable has been used you can't get rid of the noise... so this time I have carefully *not* used it. Please don't tell me that the lack of it is why the current system is having problems! La-lah-LA-la-LAH I don't want to know :o)
To get the system to boot I do this (from OFF):
Turn on with front power button.
If memory error (beep and LED pattern):
turn off with front power button
count to ten and start again
If only half RAM on POST screen:
turn off with front power button
count to ten and start again
Otherwise dual channel msg comes up and we have lift-off!
I've tried other rituals (power cable, PSU switch, CMOS reset...) but the result's always the same.
When the system boots properly (1 time in 5) it's great... Win2k is happy and CPU/memory intensive apps are solid. But a Windows restart (or aven Ctrl-Alt-Del after a floppy boot) puts us right back to the problem: 1 time in 5 it'll restart happily, otherwise it's the damned beep-beep-beep!
RAM: yes, it's a brand I'd never heard of but they do seem to be a batch pair. As noted above, both DIMMs were OK in the first K7N2G-ILSR. They're also fine in a Shuttle SN41G2. So I'm a bit sceptical about the veracity of the RAM-error beeps!
So peeps, if you've read this far, any ideas what's causing me (re)boot hell? I think I'd just live with it but for one thing... I really need for this system to be remotely bootable (VNC and a Windows restart req)... hardly likely to work is it?!

wonkanoby: tried the pencil rubber thing but, sadly, no joy.
buggfix: I hear what you say and it is very tempting to plug the aux 12V in. I've got another K7N2G-ILSR in an Antec Plus 1080AMG case (Antec True430 PSU) with the 12V plugged in and no noise (yet). (But it does have a Win2k-srv memory-leak problem and that's why I'm desperate to get the system described at the top of this thread working - essentially a duplicate to let me test installation order.) The noisy board was older (going by s/n) so maybe it was a batch problem and I'd be safe enough now?
    0303234967 - noise
    0304036761 - OK in Antec 1080
    0304082234 - this thread's subject
Now wishing I hadn't tried to make such a low component-count server; shoud've stuck with basic board + NIC + SND + VID cards.
twistedbrowntucker: Possibly there was some follow-on damage, but it doesn't "feel" right. Still, now I'm reduced to the "known good" dance. If I can get the time tomorrow I'm going to break up a Shuttle (SN41G2, XP2600+, 2*512MB, 200GB Maxtor, LG DVDwriter, card reader) and see if I can pinpoint anything... swapping the RAM is number 1 obviously! Then the CPU and then maybe rip apart another PC or two for PSUs... I feel tired already!
My gig is normally software so, although I'm quite happy with hardware, I resent getting bogged down. Usually paying a bit extra for known-brands keeps me out of that - hey, I want to *use* the stuff!
    Thanks for your replies peeps.
ASIDE: Question about  the HD LED - I'm getting zero activity... should the S-ATA drives be showing up? Or the DVD activity?

  • K7N2G ILSR not booting, unlike any other in forums! (I think!)

    I have a:
    K7N2G ILSR
    XP 2400+ cpu
    2 x 512mb (Onyx) PC2700
    old 10gig HDD
When I boot it flashes past the award bios screen so fast I can hardly see it, then reports an error (to do with active flash or something?) and that there is no bios installed. This warning has something to do with "promise" at the top of the screen. This screen is only up for a second or less, so sorry about the vague info!
After this, it changes to a screen where it lists the IRQs for everything, then comes up with a disk I/O error...
    Am I being a dumbass?
    Thanks in advance
    P

thanks v much for the quick reply!!
HDD is a Fujitsu I think (am at work right now!) about 4 or 5 years old, on IDE 1 (using 80 conductor cable that came with m/b), set as master with no slaves. Jumpered on back to be master.
DVDrom is on IDE2 as master.
no jumpers have been changed, so its set as 133 fsb, and sound is not redirected to front panels.
    cheers
