AMD Athlon XP 2800 (Barton Core) will not post at FSB 166 MHz.

Per top of the board “stickys” I have read a great number of the post on this board and done my homework to provide as much technical info to help you help me. This should explain some of it’s lengthy nature.
Aside from Memory, HDD and Video card every thing else has been unplugged from board and power or stripped out of slots to isolate the problem.
Presently running BIOS: A6712 V. 1B

I even installed and ran other AMD utillitys while MemTest was running to “stress” the system memory with zero errors. During this period I checked Windows Task Manager > Performance, CPU usage at 100%, PF usage 1.35gb. No Probs.

BIOS I have tried: The original; Ver:10A, ran fine on Athlon XP 1600 (1400 MP) 3 years.
•   Then with MSI Live Update 3: Installed v. 1c which couldn’t run FSB 166MHz (MSI:” Fixes system reports incorrect message for AMD 3200+ CPU.
- Supports Sempron L2 512K 3000+ CPU.)
However, v. 1.c did not work and would not post at all with the newly installed Barton AMD-XP 2800. [frankly this attempt was months ago and I do not remember whether it would post at the slower 100 and 133 FSB speeds, and also to muddle my memory further I was upgrading an A7N8X-D with a Barton XP 3000 and having similar problems on the ASUS,,, which is now running fine at full potential. ; - p
•   Then I selected and flashed A6712 V 1.7 122602, boots and runs Win.XP-sp2 at FSB 100MHz & 133MHZ.  (MSI:” Supports AMD Barton XP2800+ (FSB333) CPU
-Fixes system sometimes will have IDE CRC error   -Fixes D-bracket2+USB keyboard, cannot use keyboard on DOS mode.)”    which couldn’t run FSB 166MHz.
I checked with the Tech. at the local shop where I purchased the KT4V MoBo. He suggested I try a different BIOS but he didn’t specify which one. He is a personal friend and admits to some bad luck and dead boards due to flashing bios so reluctant to mess with it.
•   Now running:  A6712vms.1B0 – MSI hid this BIOS V. found here:
•   http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=362&kind=1
•    On a different page than the 2 versions mentioned above. http://www.msicomputer.com/support/bios_result.asp
•    No wonder people are frustrated and confused about different MoBo versions there ID #’s and the BIOS versions them selves as seen on this news board. MSI’s fault, no fault of anyone here trying to help.
A6712vms.1B0
Runs fine at FSB 100 (shows as XP 1250+) and FSB 133 (shows as XP 2200+) Booting to Win. XP-sp2 on CMOS, default setup other than minor tweaks to accommodate MSI Ti 4200 AGP 8X 125mb graphics card or Gilmond PCI card. But which couldn’t run FSB 166MHz .
No post at FSB 166 mhz (once, it did flash a post screen stating AMD Athlon XP 2800 for about 2 sec. before going blank) Manual power down. Just now I rebooted with FSB 166, and again saw the AMD Athlon XP 2800 at top of the post screen as I hit pause break,,,, then the machine power crashed to Off. Once it even loaded Win.XP-sp2 but crashed to power off with in 2 min.
I must have booted this beast a dozen times or more after Clear CMOS jumper each time it went to blank screen with mach. still running. Start over; set Default settings and work up with FSB 100, 133, each time to read what POST says and see if it will boot to O/S.
Btw: I have looked for clear evidence through the not so specific descriptions MSI uses to separate these board model #s and may be part of my current problem with correct board ID = correct BIOS ID.

   • KT4 Ultra-B (Bluetooth ready)
   • KT4 Ultra-BSR (Bluetooth ready + Serial ATA RAID)
   • KT4 Ultra-FISR (Bluetooth ready, Serial ATA RAID, Gigabit LAN, IEEE 1394)
- KT4V (MS-6712), 6-channel software audio codec
   • KT4V-L, with onboard 10/100 LAN
- KT4M (MS-6596) micro-ATX board
   • KT4M-L, with onboard 10/100 LAN
- KT4A Ultra, (MS-6590) NEW!! based on KT400A chipset
   • KT4A Ultra (Standard Version)
   • KT4A Ultra-SR (Serial ATA RAID)
   • KT4A Ultra-FISR (Serial ATA RAID, Gigabit LAN, IEEE 1394)
And a very similar version of this on Official MSI site. Both seem to try and make a difference between modles with on board Lan, and Blue Tooth ready.
Take a look at my original box sticker:
*As seen on face of MoBo: KT4V MS-6712   Ver:10A
*The Original Box bar code label: KT4V-L (601-6712-050)
K7, KT400. 5.1 chnl. S/W Audio, LAN, D-Bracket 2.
Yup, it says all this on the sticker and the in the manual and verified on the MoBo. So I can only guess at all parts of the puzzle as they gave them to me which lead me to the afore mention BIOS versions I ran, or am running. The sticker points to nearly half of the boards above except for the MS-6712 and the Ver:10a which is what I based my BIOS choices on. If someone knows differently and can lead me to official Nfo with a better answer I’m all ears.
Just saw this: Latest Official BIOS : KT4 MS-6590 (1.4), KT4V  MS-6712 (1.8 ) , KT4M MS-6596 (1.1)>>Here: [VIA] unofficial FAQ for KT4 series motherboards

Please also keep in mind I’m not trying to scuff anyone’s shoes…I just want to get what’s right for my board so that it and the CPU can live up to their full, "as advertised" potential and run with the other 3 big dogs under my desk.
This seems descriptive enough and rather lengthy. Just doing my homework and reporting my findings so I won’t include actual CMOS settings unless requested. I have notes on all settings I currently use to boot with this problem.
Other Dogs:

ASUS A7M266-D running Athlon XP 2800 (mp), Mem: 3gb Super Talent

Any suggestions or insights are much appreciated.

Welcome, and thank you for a thorough input! Hope I don't miss something you already said!
Quick version: Try setting processor voltage to 1,5 volt.
Long version:
Posting at wrong FSB can be put down to two things:
1 The processor isn't what you thought it is, but I think you eliminated that.
2 The system cannot run the processor at the correct speed. Mainly this has to with overheating, and/or that memory and processor cannot cooperate. This must be it, as you noticed the processor is correctly recognised.
You have little connected right? Then the best thing would be to pull power cable out. Take the motherboard and redo the seating of the processor, this is much better done with motherboard taken out.
At the same time, I suggest you clear CMOS. Should always be done when changing processor, and I've noticed on the Internet there are a few 1,5V XP2800 around.

  • [AMD] Athlon XP 2500+barton core

    Hello friends!
My Barton 2500+(fsb333) is not stabile on overclocking to fsb 400.My MoBo is K7N2 Delta 2LSR and I keep the ratio FSB:DDRAM frequency to 1:1.
I can make everything with this barton on 400fsb, but not gamming or PCMARK.It freezes or it mekes a debug message.
You can see may sistem specs on my signature.
What can i do to make it to FSB400?
    THKS

Most newer systems draw a lot of power down the 12v rail. The XP chips don't use as much as a 939 with SLI+PCI-E & RAID thus can get away with lower 12v rail. 8 XP systems is the most I've built in a week (It what I do buy and sell parts/systems for a live'in). I've used 10a +12v to power XP 2500+ stock, I've run 3000+ (stock 333FSB) off my old citex 10a +12v. Its not about the watts or amps rating solely it how well the PSU handles and sends the power down the rails e.g  QUALITY.
My antec boots my system (see sig) upto 2.6, yet I have a 500W (no name) with 20a +12 which won't boot @ 2.2. Its about QUALITY and clean power down each rail.
Just like others have said you need to find what your system can do. Its a matter of testing bit by bit, to find what the limit with your parts.
Box coolers in most cases don't offer ther best cooling. As with any CPU cooler correct fitting will help with temps, some are better then others.
I realy like pccooler as one of my suppliers use to do them cheap. Some models also supportted several sockets in 1 pack 462 478 754 via different mounts
I don't have the model in the picture but an older 1. With out case fans, and a mess of wires with bad air flow my old CPU (1800XP business PC) would get to 70+ under load on stock cooler running doom 3. I don't normally run it like that but I wanted to check out how high I could get it with only CPU fan.  After installing 2 fans 1 in 1 out and cleaning up wires (for air flow) with a replacement pccooler over the standard H/S/F my temps drop to 39-42 idle 50 under load. I dont over clock the 1800 due to lack of AGP/PCI lock. Good cooling can help your parts live and perform better in most cases. Unless you do as a friend did and let water cooling leak on to X850XT-PE lol he just lucky it did not take out any other parts
Good to see that you have it going @ 190

    using kt4avl mobo w/amd athlon xp 2500+ barton....problems oc'ing

Sorry if I'm posting in the "wrong" section - maybe you could tell me where I should post instead?
With a 333mhz max fsb board like the kt4avl, what should I be able to change to overclock, then?  When I up the cpu freq from the default 166 to even as high as 180, it won't post...let alone 200 like I hear people do.  What you're saying about the bios reading what's hard-coded into the chip during post makes me go 'hmmm', because if I set the freq down to the bios default of 100, the post reads the cpu as a 1900+.
I tried poking around on the internet for specs on successive xp chips, like the 2600+ and the 2800+.  My chip, being the 2500+ which runs at 1.833ghz, has a multiplier of 11 with a freq of 166.  Whereas,I found some doc on the other chips having multipliers of like 12.5 or 13.5, something like that - when I tried manipulating the multiplier higher than the stock 11, it posts, but it didn't change my operating frequency any when I viewed it from within Windows (system properties view in Windows tells you how fast your cpu is operating), but that did increase when I was manipulating the cpu frequency in the bios earlier (it's just that it 'hit the wall' at about 175mhz and wouldn't post with anything above that, even when increasing the cpu voltage to 1.7 or 1.75).
Can someone suggest what they might try, given these symptoms?

  • AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Throughbred running at 1.35ghz ? HELP !?!?!

Hi. I have just bought an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ thoroughbred and popped it into my MSI K7N2 and everything seemed ok until the system info in the control panel says that the CPU is running at 1.35ghz. I am a little confused !?!?! Any help would be most appreciated.  As I am a relative newbie when it comes to CPU's I just expected to plug it in and away I go ......

I have a similar problem, my machine runs, but the system says 1.24GHz. Its a 2.6XP AMD processor.
At present the jumpers are set at:
    J10 - User Mode (default)
    J11 - Closed (133/166MHz) (default)
Ive tried setting the bios manually, but each time I do it locks te machine up, i have to reset the bios in order to get back in. At this time I normally get a series of ligts indicating either a processor problem or once it said a memory problem.
Yet as you can see, Im using the machine OK.
What settings should I alter, atm everything in the bios is on default.

  • HP Pavilion dv7 1070us will not POST

    Model: HP Pavilion dv7 1070us
System will not POST after replacing FAN.
I first replaced the FAN, then after re-assembling the unit resulting in:
    Black screen,
CAPS-LOCK white LED continuous 1 second blink,
    F12-WIFI amber LED solid ON,
    The FAN comes on, then stops for a few seconds then restarts and stays on;
I thought this indicated that the CPU was running.
I did all the normal tricks:
    RAM in-out various combinations,
    CMOS battery removal.
Power adapter and Battery removal combinations.
Hard Reset by holding power button for 15-30 seconds w/o battery or PS attached.
remove un-necessary devices: HD, wi-fi, DVD, etc
    Still does not work.
So I figured the Video portion of the CPU was bad.
I then ordered and replaced the AMD A10 4600m CPU.
Re-assembled the machine and still the same symptoms.
I guess the CPU was not bad.
    I give up.
How could HP release a machine that does not POST when the main pieces are good:
    Motherboard,
    CPU,
    RAM
    Power.
I did not buy a new CMOS battery. Can't imagine that would keep it from POST'ing.
Any help ????  Otherwise went from working to JUNK.
A thought: Laptops are not worth the money you pay if they only last a few years.

  • P67A-GD55 will not post

I am absolutely stuck and about ready to RMA this board as I believe the one I got is DOA, though I'm not 100% so I'm posting here to make sure that it is in fact the motherboard that is faulty and not some other piece. My computer will not post, no beeps, no video; it simply powers on, sort of.
Allow me to describe the problem. When I push the power button, there is a delay of about 5-10 seconds before the computer finally powers on. Once it does power on, it spins up, for maybe 3 seconds, then shuts off, then about a second later, it powers back on again. It will reset itself 5-6 times before finally staying on, then it sits there. No beeps, no post, no video.
Here's what I've done to troubleshoot the issue.
I have removed any attached hardware (video cards, hdds, etc) one at a time to see if one of them was causing the problem, but to no avail. I removed one of the sticks of RAM, that didn't work, then switched the two, also didn't work. I thought it was perhaps the power switch, so I swapped that out, that also didn't work. I tried a different PSU, also a failure.  I got down to just the cpu, the motherboard, the psu, and a power switch, and it did the same thing. I double checked the CPU to make sure it was in properly (just in case), and it was in correctly. I'm not sure what else I can do to trouble shoot this board. I cleared the CMOS every time I changed/removed a piece of hardware and even bought a new battery.
    Here are my specs:

If there are bent pins, what is the best approach to straightening them?
A strong light, a good magnifier, a pair of tweezers, & a steady hand.
It is also recommended for initial startup, that only one RAM stick is used. Placed in the primary dimm slot (blue closest to the CPU). Then load OS, drivers, etc., then add the other stick(s) later.

  • MS-9804 Will not post

I have a MS-9804 "Fuzzy RS690T" that will not post. I have tried different memory and power supply's. The processor is a known good processor. I have checked the jumpers and the are correct. Any suggestions, The motherboard is hardly used, its sits on my shelf 98% of the time in a anti-static bag.

You did connect the 20Pin PSU connector to ATX1 I presume?
BUT, what did you connect in JPWR1? As this is a 12V connector with ONLY yellow and black wires!
It's not the extra 4 pin that completes the 24pin PSU connector.
My guess is that you made the mistake there.

  • Dka790gx platinum will not post

    Hi
Just started a new build and the above board will not post.
    I have radeon 4850, 1 x hdd, 1 x dvd, 1 x 2 gig ram 1066, phenom II 940, antec earthwatt 850.
I went through the following process of elimination.
taken board out of chasis, only used 1 stick of ram, used onboard vga and dvi, cleared cmos, removed battery, tried another psu but this is a 550 watt hiper.
the green sticker on the bios reads 160 so i guess it has the correct bios.
Stumped now..Dont know whether its the board or the cpu thats the problem.
    Any ideas thanks

    Update.
The vendor tested the board and it posted for them ok. I spoke to their technical dept and they tried it with an older processor. I sent my processor and ram and they tested these and the board posted.
I received the board, ram and cpu back today. Set it up with a minimum of hardware and it still wont post.
I havent been able to speak to the technician but the only thing I can think of is the psu.
I have an antec eathwatt 650 (not 850 as previously posted..typo). This psu works as it has been use in my current setup with an intel core 2 duo 6400.
What psu's are people using with this board and processor. Phenom II x4 940.
    thanks

I have k7n2 delta L --6570--amdxp-2500-512 mb pc3200 ram. powmax 400w power .ati 9600 all in wonder. I swapped all parts to a better case to fit a certain location and the system will not post at all. the diagnostic d-bracket has number 1 and 4 in red while 2 and 3 are green. the book only tells me that the processor is initializing with a note saying this will show information regarding the processor (like brand name, system bus. etc. but nothing will show on the monitor. everything was working fine before the swap. i have checked everything i can think of. i would appreciate some advise. sorry if i haven't posted all the proper requrements and spec's. thanks. paul k.

i reset the memory and cpu and video card. i think i disconnected everything in the case a couple of times to make sure it wasn't a simple blunder. nothing! i have a friend that wants to try look at it i may do that. also tomorrow i will try to post all my info like the rest of you guys have done. i'll give it a try anyway. also i done the other things you mentioned, i forgot what the questions were. you can't see the post info that i am replying to keep checking so i can answer properly and i forget things.
    thanks

  • K8T Master2-Far Will not POST unless CMOS is freshly cleared!

Hey all, thanks for helping out.
I came back to my computer one day to find it in a coma. The system was on, but the screen was getting no signal and would not come on by moving the mouse/keyboard like usual. I thought that maybe it had turned off the monitor for power save and then frooze some how. After restarting the computer I found that it was still doing the same thing. I shut down the system and unpluged. After waiting about 5 min i plugged back in and flipped the switch on the powersupply. This started the computer right up (even though i had not pushed th power button) and left it in the same condition as before. It simply would not post. After closer inspection I found that it was not posting because it wasn't getting far enough in the process before it was being restarted. I checked the restart button and even went as far as removing it from the motherboard. This did not help. I knew it was restarting because i could see it checking the optical drives then waiting for about 4 seconds, then a weird noise from the speakers (like a soft cruching so to speak) would happen, then it would do this all over again, non stop. That noise was familliar though, it was the normal noise that I hear when I push the restart button (I'm guessing a release of electricity etc..) so I knew what was going on.
After switching the memory out and in all orders, I stripped the system down to the bare min. This however did not change anything. I put the system back together and flashed the cmos. This made the system restart once, then "BEEP" it posted. It said CMOS Checksome Error - Defaults Loaded. I first pushed DEL to get into the bios. I changed everything back to how its suppost to be (time, apature, etc...) then saved and exited. This made the system go back into its restarting state. I then flashed the cmos again and pushed F1 to continue. The system booted up just fine. In safemode of course. Then i restarted. It then went back into its restarting state. I flashed the bios again. And after pushing F1 to continue selected it to go into windows normally. Everytime it does this it gets different results. One time it got past the windows xp loading screen and sat at the black screen before you get your curser and welcome screen (sigh... restart... flash..). It also once got in just fine, and after about 5 min got a blue screen about "bad pool caller". It most the time however gets a random blue screen right after you see the welcome screen. These blue screens consist of "bad pool caller", "IRQ Equal or Lesser Value", or No notes, just generic blue screen.
If i change anything in my bios it will not post. If i dont flash the cmos, it will not post. If i dont change anything in bios and continue, then restart, it will not post. The only way for it to post and for me to see anything on the screen is to flash the cmos. I thought it might be the power supply, but the only extra i have does not have the extra plug to power the 2nd cpu. After thinking about it though. I dont know if it could be a power supply issue, if it was then would it even load up into safe mode? Or why would it not load up into safe mode again after restarting. I have tried an extra stick of memory that i know works in a separate computer, but nothing changed. I have tried a different videocard... nothing changed. I have removed everthing accept the basics (motherboard, cpu's,videocard, memory, psu) and nothing changed.
I have worked on this for about 1 week now and can not figure it out. I have my useless MCSE/CSE/A+ certifications (I say useless because I dont have a job that uses them) but this one is beyond me. If anyone could help I would appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Brandon
P.S. I dont know if this is related, but I did have to change from useing the DVI connection to RGB plug to even see anything once I heard it post. I was useing DVI before, and once i figured out that it would post after flashing cmos, I had to change to RGB to get any visual. The DVI will not work now at all. I have even tried changing cords. The DVI wont work in safemode either. Thanks

I reckon these mobos have a fault that really needs to be sorted.  You say that your PC was working fine using PC 3200 memory with 240's. I have a similliar problem, I am using 246's with Kingston' PC3200 KVR333X72RC25/512D 2.5 ECC REG.  The PC worked fine for about two weeks and then one day went on a blink, every time I power it up all I get is beeps.  I was forced to order new BIOS, which didn't work everything else has been tested and works fine.
So I ordered micron memory 2X512 PC 2100 266 ECC REG which I was told by the supplier that it was compartible, that didn't work either.  I then went on to check the battery, to my surprise the battery was low so I thought I had nailed it, went out bought a new battery but the problem still exits.  I must say though after installing the micron memory it did boot up but when I went into BIOS to change settings to boot fro CDROM  the damn thing would not restart I had to switch it off using the power button to restart it and when it restarted all i got was beeps.  After that to  get it to bootup I have to reset CMOS using the jumper and when it boots up it gives a checksum error message.  I have a choice of two at this stage
    (1) To Press F1
    (2) To Press delete o go into BIOS setup
The F1 option takes me as far as the windows log on screen and that's it cuts off as if it is gonna boot itself backup but just hangs there.
The Delete option takes into BIOS which when exited the PC does nothing until powered down and powered up again, from here I have to reset CMOS to get it to bootup.
I have been told that the  kingston memory is not compatible but my question is how did it work the first two weeks?
Good ol' Bas have helped out on this one quite often but here I am three months on still in a struggle.  I thought of RMAing the board but it would cost me about 160 pounds and with that kind of money I could pick up another boad from kompllete.com and remain with some change for a couple of buds.
"To bass You said in the last post that the poblem could be the power supply changed it but that has not solved my problem"

  • In need of some help :( p55 big bang fuzion will not post

For some reason my system will not post. i switch my system on and  everything on the board lights up all the drives spin up, gpu spins up, but it will still not post iv checked the gpu and it dose work fine, iv checked the ram to find out that one of my ram sticks has gone. iv tired booting with the stick that works with no luck neither.
would really like some advice please
    My Current System is : i7  875k [email protected] GHz,on OC Genie- - P55 Big Bang-Fuzion (MS-7582)- -BIOS v1.5 --CORSAIR CMT4GX3M2A2133C9 4GB 2133MHz, 9-10-9-27, 1.65V, with Intel XMP -- NSI R5850 Twin Frozr II-- Real Power M520, with two WD Caviar Black 500 GB SATA Hard Drives ( WD5001AALS) in Raid 0

like Xmad said get a good 600W PSU from a trusted manufacturer of a single +12V kind. split rails are only good when there very high ampage ones (over 30A per rail) and the single rail ones are a better pick all-round!
and like Xmad also pointed out id also recomend a Corsair or seatronic unit of 600W or more!
it doesn't matter how the power went out as any thing that pulls over the load a PSU can supply will fead back and cause damage to the PSU itself!
alot of PSU makers cannot be trusted much as they put lables on the psu that are no where neer the real units performance level as they use a bench version that have uprated VRM's and bigger heatsinks and high end refrigerated coolers to stop them overloading thats totally un-realistic!

  • Hd webcam c525 will not post on a video blog

my new videos from logitech camera "HD Webcam C525" will not post on a video blog website.
-I've tried every which way: google, ie & firefox, no luck getting my video from hd webcam c525 to show on www.slvlogs.com -a video blog.
So i did a lot on firefox, remove flashplayer (or shockplayer) and vlc then reinstall them ---- download lots of things and etc. - now i'm able to record my video!!!!! But then i hit a "publish" button it's gone - didn't post at all (for replying or add video comment). :(
However, youtube works fine: i film myself and upload it on youtube then post it on www.slvlogs.com -just fine for new posts only. Sad part is that i can't reply or leave (add) a video comment.
    Please help?

So I am hearing two issues, that the publish button disappeared and that you cannot add new comments to an embedded video.
It looks like on the site you must be logged in to make a comment: "Log in to Reply"

  • 3 ea MSI K8N Diamond Plus will not POST

I have 3 K8N Diamond Plus motherboards that recently started having intermittent problems POSTing to BIOS. I initially found it possible to boot by clearing CMOS and reentering my settings; however, over time these boards have gotten to where they will not POST at all. Power comes up, but the four-LED diagnostic display stays continuously red, indicating no BIOS activity. Ideally, I'd like to get my hands on a service manual for this board, but if anyone can throw out common issues with this board as a starting point, that would be great.  All of these boards have been in service for more than 3 years in 3 different machines. The failure appears to have identical symptoms. I would bet the component that has failed is common to all 3 boards. It seems other people are having the very same problem with these boards over several years of service. I have tried all of the usual troubleshooting tactics with no success. Thanks!
