Memory.... I personally would not bother with more than 2 256mb of ram sticks, as 512 mb is more than adequate. However you could consider getting a 512MB ram stick (Avalible) instead of two more 256's as you then have one slot remaining.
However i think that 512mb is more than enough.

Firefox (v. 18.0.1) will not run my school programs any more since the Java scare. It also is choking at running screencast-o-matic.
And this is happening on both my computers not just one.
I have emptied Java cache, emptied the browser caches, downloaded the latest Java, Reinstalled it. Cleared caches again, etc., etc., etc.
Firefox will not run Java and I have to use IE which is the only browser that I have gotten the scripts to function so that I can use my programs.Been there done that. Actually I have even install a fresh Firefox on virgin win8 64-bit laptop (without synchronising to my firefox in general) with the absolutely latest Java - didn't help either. And my test page is not the only one, but as I did this myself I know exactly the contents.
Since then my Firefox is in sync... well more or less as it seems it only sync some ways but that is another matter... but at least most of my stuff is back in place.
What I know is that the egg.html takes forever to load, and that the java part never shows. I think that this goes for most Java places, but I do remember that it was not always the case. Right now even the Oracle test page can't find Java, and I know it could at some point. Reinstalling tells me I already got Java, so it is there, likewise it is active in the plugin window. But some parameter some where must have gone haywire. -

What happened to /etc/securetty?
I want to be able to log on as root over the network - enabling this used to involve renaming or removing /etc/securetty, but this file doesn't exist in my newly installed Solari 10. How is this managed now? And where can I read more about these 'deeper' aspects of the system (such as where the seucrity info is kept etc)?
No, /etc/securetty is found on all UNIXes - even our
Solaris 8 box.Just because that file is currently on your box does not mean it was installed by or is used by Solaris.
While not authoritative, the UNIX rosetta stone page suggests that only a few versions of UNIX use that file (or /etc/securettys) for login permission. <http://bhami.com/rosetta.html>
What does 'grep /etc/securetty /var/sadm/install/contents' show on your Solaris 8 machine with the file?

I am on Acrobat DC trial. On earlier versions have no problem with duplex printing. Now with DC, it's impossible. I have tried downloading latest printer software, etc, etc. Nothing seems to0 work. Any ideas please?
Ralph, Thanks for replying. There where no received SIP messages at all just the INVITE being sent but I have made some more progress. The mini does indeed just work. I can do everything that you are supposed to do to other ichat users on the internet. Very nice.
The imac is still playing up but I have got further. I had peerguardian2 installed which unknown to me doesn't need to be running to prevent you for accessing 'barred' IP addresses. snatmap.mac.com is barred in the lists! I discovered this when I saw one of your other posts showed how to turn on terminal logging for ichat. Now that I have turned off peerguardian2 (using the disable filters option) I can make calls to the testbot and see the adverts. I have even done a video conference with the two testbots. I will just uninstall peerguardian2.
However, I can not get a AV chat working to a real user....

I have tried all the options for quicktime streaming but will try 1.5Mb/s again.
The ichat bandwidth limit is set to "none". I am in New Zealand and I have standard ADSL (not ADSL2+) 7.6M down 512K up. The mini config is also set to none.
Internet sharing is off.
I have had parallels on the machine but the two interfaces that it installed "Parallels Host-Guest" and "Parallels NAT" are configured 'off' and show as not connected. Is this enough? I will uninstall parallels and see if that helps since I don't use it. I also have VMware's thing installed but that doesn't seem to add any interfaces.
I need to capture a full trace of the imac to other ichat user to see what is happening but will update when I have does your suggested changes or have a trace

I know of no way to remove encryption on iTunes backups if you've forgotton the password. If you've used the 4 digit PIN code to lock your iPhone in the past that can sometimes default as your "password" for this encryption in iTunes. Try that PIN or any PIN you've used in the past. If you don't use a lock maybe you played around with that feature once when you first got your phone....try "1,2,3,4" or anything you could have possibly tried.
As far as accessing older unencrypted backups you can try this software. I do not have any experience using it but it seems like it's what you need and is probably the easiest route for both voicemail and texts:

I know with AT&T, voicemails are only stored on their servers for 30 days so any voicemail older than that you would not have been able to access again.

How do I reinstall iWeb 3.0.3? I inadvertently opened an html file of my website and tried to open it with iWeb '09. I get a message saying “Can’t open file” etc., etc. I’ve tried reinstalling the updated version. Iweb will not open.
Delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder. Then launch iWeb and see if it opens.
What happened was trying to open the html file reset the file path that iWeb saves in its preference file to tell it where to go when you launch iWeb. Deleting the pref file and launching iWeb creates a new file and iWeb looks in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder for the Domain.sites2 file it uses to create your site.

I have a problem, my wife has an ipad with photos , emails etc etc, she has recently got herself a new iPad Air, has now been using that for two or more months, more photos (new) more emails and other stuff. What she wants to do is get all she wants from ipad 1 to new ipad without finishing up with 2 of everything which happen on previous occasion. I realise that she needs to tidy up ipad 1 first and get rid of thousands of emails etc. I need help.

Hello, I'm a student who's just being introduced to java technology, and i have downloaded the latest java sdk, but cannot get it to compile or run any of my programs i get. I've read several forums about class paths and such, but i've tried setting classpath and path environment variables but it hasnt done anything at all. Can someone tell me what exactly to type in the environment varioables menu or command prompt for Windows XP so i can compile and run java programs?

i've tried going to my computer/properties/advanced/environment variables and changing or adding PATH and CLASSPATH as C:\Program Files\j2sdk_nb\j2sdk1.4.2\bin , (im very sure these are correct pathnames) and then i try on command prompt

then i type:
javac HelloWorld.java
but it always displays
"javac" is not recognized as a batch file, etc etc
and i have several class files already that when i try
java HelloWorld.class
it displays
"no classdeffounderror helloworld.class etc etc
i've tried reinstalling the java sdk several times also, which didn't change anything.
at first when i installed it, i was able to compile several programs, until it started giving me error messages over and over again, and now i can't compile or run any programs. Any suggestions? thanks -

I have downloaded the trial version of Muse and already bought a theme to try out. I was very excited to try it but now the excitement has now turned into utter frustration. I have been trying to get past this "Please connect to the Internet to continue. Your computer seems to be offline etc.etc..."
I see from other posts that this has been a problem for others. I am using a Mac (10.6.8) and have my firewall turned off. I use a router and turned the firewall for this off in the settings but to no avail. Although it makes me nervous to think of using software that requires this.
Can anyone offer a solution to this infuriating problem? Much appreciated if someone can.I recommend you turn both firewalls back on. Normal firewall settings do not interfere with the type of communication Muse requires to download an update or validate your subscription.

TV listings not loading. (Oops something unexpected happened) etc etc.
I'm trying to find out what's wrong with the tv listings. Theses pages are loading way too slow or not loading at all. When you click on program info, I get the "Oops something unexpected happened etc etc".This has been going on for over a week. I'm using Windows 7 and have all updates. Also I'm using the most recent Google Chrome. I have cookies enabled for Comcast/Xfinity. I use a ad block add on but this condition persist regardless of it's settings. I deleted all cookies, cleared the cache and started over on all that with no luck. There appears to be some spy ware associated with the listings page after I used "PageSpeed Insight" to look at the page. I saw reference to Facebook, some ad stuff, and some errors after the program analyzed the page, but I believe the problem is somewhere else. I would appreciate any help with this. I've seen others post similar problems with this tv schedule, but I have not seen much in a remedy besides, "use another listing service". I depend on this but it appears to be undependable. A technician did call today and he was sure, in a more than non cordial way, that the problems were on our end. He was also sure that Comcast could come out and load the grid on their laptop for 49.95 + tax, which may be true. While this guy was explaining how smart he was, he also explained that Comcast did not fix computers (again, in a more than uncongenial way) You could tell that this tech did not want to be bothered on his day off, and I may try to contact corporate on that. Anyway, I tried 3 of the top browsers...IE, Chrome, and Firefox, all with the same results. I also un-installed Flash Player and Java and re-installed those with no luck. In the end, I may have a technician come out to check my pc. The reason I doubt that the pc is the problem is that I just re-installed the operating system. Sunday night....Suddenly, everything is trying to load correctly. It may be a cookie issue. I just checked the option to allow 3rd party cookies (which I don't care to do) All the followers on this subject may try that. I'm going to try to fine tune the cookie thing for Comcast only. By the way...thanks to the very smart Comcast tech...for nothing.

Trouble changing icon in any application, file, etc etc
I've followed the instructions to change an icon and have done it before with success. But it's not working anymore? Here are the steps i'm doing.... Am I missing something?
1. right click on icon that i want to use as the "new icon"
(i believe this is the problem... preview.app is opening the icon. with in get info, the "icon" at the top is just your generic "jpeg" icon. In the "preview" window towards the bottom shows a picture of the icon)
2. select get info
3. right click on "icon" at top of preview window
4. cmd c to copy (also tried copy from file drop down)
5. repeated step on target app to chang icon
6. cmnd v to paste (also tried to paste from file drop down)
doesn't change the icon on the target app or file etc etc....
signed.... confused?OK, try doing both a SMC and PRAM reset and see if either takes care of the problem.

There are a couple of things you can do before heading off to the Apple store, a SMC and PRAM resets. To do these:
_SMC RESET_
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.
_PRAM RESET_
• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
If it still doesn't work then try restarting in Safe Mode, this will clear out some caches which have become corrupted. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
